Can somebody help me!
I have a rooted htc desire s which is s-off but am concerned with the level of dev activity.
I have been offered a nexus s and £50 for it as a swap.
I'm seeking any advice regarding whether its a worthwile deal for me, I have to say looking through the forums that there is a lot of roms and speed boosts for the nexus s.
Any advice is appreciated.

Go for it if you're after dev support.

I had the NexuS - and bought the DesireS (also from a providercontract) "to sell". Than at the end I sold the NexuS.
_I_ like the haptic of the DesireS more - it's little bit smaler and somehow "better" - and _I_ like Sense - especially the dialer with t9 search and the integrated GAL for exchange. With stock-android I had to use more market apps (handsentSMS, dialers, GALsearch,..) - the things were not as integrated...
And the customROMs for NexuS where also buggy (WiFi, 2G/3Gswitch,..). For my kind of usage the DesireS is fast enough (in daily use no difference). For me the (rooted) DesireS-ROM is good (only hated route66 which I deactivated)
So only advice I can give: grab a NexuS and play around with it - more than 2 min. It's a very personal choice.
Thanks for the advice friends....
One last point I would like clarification on, the desire s has 768mb ram and the nexus s has 512mb.
Will this make a significant difference in terms of performance once apps are loaded on the phone or is 512mb more than sufficient?
It will most probably not, as the extra memory in Desire S gets eaten up by Sense, which is great IMO, but eats up a lot of memory....far more than "pure google" of Nexus S, compare if you can I'll bet you the memory left will be +- 10% the same...

Hey everyone. I need some help. Maybe you could give me some insight. I'm looking to trade up my iPhone for another android device. I'm between:
HTC desire hd
Nexus s
HTC desire z
Those are the orders in which I'd get them but one thing really bothers me. The battery life of the htc desire hd. I sometimes go 18 hours between charges and I heard many people complaining of it's horrid battery life. A salesman from Vodafone said that the nexus s isn't much better regardless of it's nearly 300 mah more capacity. I'm stuck.
Maybe someone could shed some light or give some advice. The screen real estate is fantastic on the hd while the nexus s is gorgeous as well.
What do you guys think?
Thanks!

No automatic taskkiller please.
It only interferes with Androids internal memory management and might even worsen your battery life.
I ended up getting the Samsung galaxy s2. Fantastic little device. Hehe.

Woops.. Didn't read the last post sorry
Aww... im Jealous... I need it.
you can change it to any of them, you can not go wrong...
How are you likeing the Galaxy?
Everybody needs a sII ... Moreover, HTC has announce there wouldn't have 2.3 on their phones so you shouldn't buy a samsung's phone.
Excuse me for my bad english, I'm french
You should have listed SGSII as one of your options in the first place and everyone would have told you buy it.
FYI Sensation has 2.3
Nexus S for the SAMOLED and latest Android version.

I have the SGSII, since over a week ago, it's fantastic. When I made this thread, it hadn't become general knowledge that it was going to be available here in Spain on my carrier. Only a few weeks ago it was announced to be released a few days later. Then I got it

Nexus S is a nice phone c:
Hello everyone. I'm thinking of buying a new phone. I am between Nexus S and the HTC Desire, but I don't know which to pick. ;-;
Nexus S
4" Screen
Super AMOLED
Google's own-branded device with faster updates
HTC Desire
576MB RAM. 64MB more than the Nexus S
So, opinions people? I want a good Android phone on which I can play games smoothly, because I have nightmares with my Magic.
Posting benchmarks, opinions etc will help me a lot. Thanks! ^_^
This is not a question.
HTC desire is a generation behind (it's equal is the Nexus One)
go with Nexus S and don't bother about Desire.
Actually i have both and:
- Desire is much more well made, feels better
- AMOLED screen in Desire (have Nexus S with SCLCD) looks better, but SCLCD performs better in sunlight
- Nexus S has a lot lot lot... more space for apps, system etc.
From features perspective - Nexus wins and hopefully will get more devs support soon.
Another nexus advantage - its google... gets updates asap
I also have both and both with Amoled.
As someone else posted Desire is one generation behind, we I play with it now it really feels old compared to the Nexus S. I definitely felt like getting a Nexus S was an upgrade from my Desire.
Nexus S +
Always up to date Android
Original Android experience
Bigger, brighter screen (at least amoled version)
Much faster
A lot more space for apps (Desire = 140mb only)
Nexus S -
No sdcard slot (not an issue at all for me).

this pretty much sums it up.
The Desire has some sick Devs porting everthing you want. Flashing things and rerolling back to Stock Sense is extremly easy with the RUU.exe files provided by HTC.
Problem is the internal storage: you have to use A2Ext, Data2Ext or a s-off the phone to gain access to fastboot commands for custom partition layout. This slows down the phone or can lead to Data integrity problems(Data2ext).
On top of this - the HTC Speakers are crap and the CPU/GPU is just too old.

I came from the Desire and the Nexus S is an upgrade for me. The S-AMOLED screen while not quite as sharp as S-LCD is close and it's more readable in daylight.

Although it has more memory on paper, in reality Sense takes up that RAM. And the Nexus S has a lot more internal memory for apps, faster UI, better speaker, slightly better earpiece volume with better sound quality (call quality is important to me), nicer keyboard with a better dictionary, and much better battery life. The overall feel is of a much faster phone although the CPU is not really that much faster, but the GPU is a lot faster and that helps the user experience.
I'm very happy with the Nexus S, and my wife is very happy with my Desire.
I have had both phones and i personally think that the nexus s is much faster and if you decide to put custom roms on the phone then you can get well over 4000 on quadrant aswell ,, not that quadrant is a reliable benchmark ... so i say nexus s all the way!!
I had HTC Desire before my actual Nexus S. My conclusion ? I will never buy another non-vanilla Android smartphone.

^ Nexus series for life.
@OP: If your justification for getting the Desire over the NS because of an additional of 64MB in RAM then you should just go for those new dual core phones coming out.
It's a decision of:
A) Getting faster updates with a phone that is up to par but not dual core.
B) Getting the best hardware for like a month until something new comes out and get fragmented Android releases.
Note that the dual core phones coming out are on 2.2 (Froyo) which are not optimized for dual cores yet. And when that Android OS comes out, it'll take a while for them to get the new version.
Choose your pick. I chose (A)
Thanks guys! I really appreciate it. You helped a lot.(characteristics etc.) ^^
GO for Nexus S right away
Same question more or less. I have a galaxy S and think switching to the nexus s. As it is almost the same hardware does it make sense?

It depends. If you're happy with the Captivate, then why would you change it right now ? Maybe if the Nexus had better hardware, then that would've been something to look for. But if you're happy right now and don't quite need the vanilla Android and it's updates/features, then there's not a good reason to change it. But, if you have problems with the Captivate, or you just feel like you need something that the Nexus brings, or maybe even if you just got bored of your phone, then why not ? It's your choice. Your needs. Your answer.
Hello,
i want to buy a new smartphone. Currently i am down to these 4 devices:
HTC Desire
HTC Desire S
Samsung Galaxy S
Samsung Galaxy S Plus
I like to be able to tinker and learn how to develop roms for the phones.
I liked the Desire S, but i hear many complains about the wifi deathgrip. Is there any fix to this problem?
A friend has the Desire and I tried it and i find it a very good phone, also I couldn't find any complains about wifi signal etc...
About the Samsungs, the lack of custom roms concerns me, especially for the SGS Plus. Also are there any reports of poor GPS performance?
What's your opinion about these phones?
either of the SGS/+ have better screen that the other 2
other than that, functionality and feature they are just about the same
there are tons of support for both phones
Thank you for your reply.
Any more opinions?
I am leaning towards SGS, but I have second thoughts about GPS performance... Is there any fix?
sgs plus all the way it's fast & smooth as with gps fix i think you need to find a rom for that as the gps was corrected on the nexus s release.
I have a Desire and love it but the lack of internal memory sucks, just under 150mb, so you will fill it up quickly. I rooted mine and installed LeeDrOiD 3.0.8.2 GB with an extra Gb partition.
If I were you I'd go with the SGSII or one of the newer HTC such as Sensation or Desire HD.

Hey Guys!
I find myself in a rather peculiar quandary. I have both an HTC sensation 4g and a Nexus S, however I can only keep on due to financial constraints. I know the answers might be a bit biased, seeing what forum I am on, but I just wanted all of you smart people's input to help me make a good decision
Specwise, I like the sensation, and I like the screen and higher hardware specs. Im not a huge fan of sense 3.0, however. i like the nexus S getting updates (supposedly) more frequently, and the ease of rooting/flashing on it, also the battery life seems to be better..
Any suggestions?

Keep Sensation dude, it has better specs , its more futireproof. As for the battery get anker and problem solved.
P.s. I'm not biased since my sister has Nexus S. Its not that bad but its defently slower then Sensation even with Sense 3.0.
Sensation, this phone has it's problems but it's development is pretty could and as said above it's more future proofed.
Hi,
I am wondering if it is worth replacing my HTC Desire that I actually love and has loads of support and ROMs available. I'm currently running on the MildWild Oxygen ROM and it's great!
I have a budget of around 200euros which could get me a second hand HTC Sensation, potentially a Samsung Galaxy Nexus? Or for a wild card the HTC HD2 which I seem so see a lot of good things written about.
My question is,it worth it or better hold out another year, have a little more money and make a significant step up? And to what? Nexus 4 if I can get my hands on one...
Sorry, lots of questions there, but I would appreciate people's opinions on this.
Cheers

first off post your question here, its for anyone who is looking for new devices
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846277
And imo, if you budget, is this small and you enjoy your current phone, I recommend not to get a new phone because whatever new phone you gonna get would not be that much better than your current one.
click thanks if helped
Well it really depends on your usage and needs. If your happy with how your hardware is performing than you could definitely save yourself some dollars staying around these devices you've mentioned. I know what you mean I was quite happy with my Desire HD (rooted running 4.1.1) however it cant quite keep up with todays mobile games and apps so when I broke the screen a couple weeks ago I decided it wasnt worth me fixing ( cost would be about $50) and took up my carriers offer to upgrade and got a Note II. But like I said, it truly depends on your usage and needs. Hope this helped your decision..
