When I tether my xoom to my Inspire 4g, the network name has a (*) in front of it. Such as (*) barnacle. What does the * stand for?
ad-hoc network, as opposed to infrastructure mode.
Thanks...the reason I ask is because when I start Barnacle wifi tether I get that and tether works fine. If I start up portable hotspot in CM7 I don't get the * and tethering won't work. It will connect, but no web page will load.

I have a htpc build in in my car. As internet connection, I want to use my phone as internet-gateway but I do not want it to serve dhcp, dns, instead of the pc that hosts the ad-hoc network (reason is battery issues... ). These tasks are all done by my htpc in my car. So I need to connect with my phone on my ad-hoc wifi network while my phone internet connection must be on and open for use by my htpc.

When android is on Wifi, the 3g connection doesn't get used. Tether apps actually achieve this, if I get it right. Could somebody point me in the right direction or aid me with code, so I have internet connectivity while on a ad hoc network? Thanks
i would need this as well... anybody?
Is there a way to tether both GPS and 3G at the same time over wifi?
Most wifi tether apps disable system wifi so the GPS tethering apps can no longer be used.
I haven't found ANY apps that tether GPS data across the phone's WiFi. You? I wound up having to tether my GPS via USB cable and use WiFi for my laptop Internet connection.
See What I did.
I have an Android Honeycomb Tablet (Asus Transformer), which blocks ad-hoc WiFi connections. So, the Wireless Tethering for Root Users app won't help me for a WiFi connection. Barnacle also seems to do ad-hoc WiFi connections, so no help there.
But, I used to be able to do Bluetooth tethering to the tablet using the Wireless Tethering for Root Users app just fine from my MotoDroid. For some reason, I can't with my SamChg. After pairing the tablet with my SamChg and starting a Bluetooth wireless tether on the SamChg, the Tethering profile doesn't appear on the tablet (it did for the MotoDroid)
Is there a way to do Bluetooth Tethering with the SamChg?
Thanks,

Wireless Tether for root users isn't really ad-hoc. It sets your phone up as a wireless hub and supports multiple connections. So, I am not sure why the wifi is not working for you. I use it with my Xoom through wifi all the time and it is also running honeycomb.

Hi, Kornsaq - I just tried using WT4RU to connect to my laptop, and my SamChg showed up as a computer-computer ad-hoc network.
Are you doing anything special to get an infrastructure connection?

Hi guys,
installed wifi tether from google code.
it worked, however, noticed a couple things.
1. After turning off wifi tether, I'm still able to detect the adhoc wireless network. (Concerned about battery drain)
2. When having the wifi tether running, it isn't an access point, but an ad hoc network.
Anyone else having these issues? Known issues?
same here
I'm having the same issue basically. My laptop sees the "Androidtether" but it wont connect. It did the same thing with usb tethering too.
Installed Pdanet and it works off and on. I'm in a 4g city...frustrating that I can't get those sweet speeds over to my computer! haha
I am having same issue..anyone have any ideas? I wish it came up as a reg wireless connection instead of the ad hoc network....the stock wifi hotspot comes up correctly

Technically, the SamChg stock WiFi Hotspot is coming up incorrectly as an Infrastructure connection, and the android-wifi-tether app is coming up correctly as an "Ad-Hoc" connection.
It's just not "convenient" for us that the Google android-wifi-tether app only comes up in ad-hoc mode.
From Wikipedia: A wireless ad hoc network is a decentralized type of wireless network. The network is ad hoc because it does not rely on a preexisting infrastructure, such as routers in wired networks or access points in managed (infrastructure) wireless networks.
Personally, I can't think of anything more "decentralized" than a mobile phone.
As far as I know, the latest version found here (3.0-pre14) works, and it has infrastructure mode. Just use the Samsung Fascinate option when setting (Device-Profile) it up and it should work.
wow thanks..that worked beautifully...appreciate it
I was having trouble finding a reliable guide to setting up wifi tethering from a Sprint EVO 4G.
I installed WiFi Tether version 3.1-beta7. When I start it, the network is broadcast correctly, but when I attempt to connect to it, it fails. I know that the Kindle Fire has to connect to an infrastructure mode server. I enabled this mode and when I start the wifi tether, another tether icon shows up in the status bar (i am on CM7 latest nightly). It shows a checkbox option to start "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot." Whenever I select this, the Evo Reboots. I cannot seem to get a network that anything can connect to successfully.
Any suggestions or links? I haven't used wifi tether before.
1. download zt-180 adjoc switcher on both devices - phone and fire
2. open ad hoc swithcer on phone, switch to ad hoc mode on phone
3. on phone, open wifi tether app, ensure device is checked to match yours
4. set wifi tether on phone to start
5. open ad hoc switcher app on kindle.
6. change kindle fire to ad hoc mod with ad hoc switcher app.
7. connect to tethered phone using wireless settings on fire.
