Does anybody know for sure if it is safe to use an app like root explorer to delete old nandroid backups?
I've got about a dozen backups listed in cwm that I will never use and about 3 that I use to switch between roms. Is it safe to just delete the ones that I don't need? and is root explorer the right app to use?

Yes, you can delete them. You can use any application or use your computer. Root Explorer will be fine.
There's no reason to keep them unless you want to be able to go back to your setup. I only keep one on my phone, store the ones that I may want to go back to on my computer, and delete the rest.

I flash roms a lot and there is something I need to find a fix for.
Once the flash is done I boot up and start initial phone setup menu. I have to sign into my google account at this stage obviously. So once that's done the first thing I want to do is restore my apps with titanium, so I go to the market for it, but the market straight away starts downloading ALL my apps at once when I only want TB to download. Only way to stop it is to go through the entire app list and cancel all the downloads, which takes a while. I cant let the downloads go ahead as it's far too many megabytes.
So I want a way to install TB without using the market. I've tried creating the update.zip in TB options and the zip does get created, but when I flash it from recovery it doesn't install.
Can I get the apk from somewhere and install it that way (I know you can push from cmd prompt although I've never tried it), and if so is there a way to do it on the phone only, as I often flash roms when I'm away from the computer.
When you enter your google credentials, it'll ask you if you want to back up your data. Uncheck it. Once your past that screen go into settings > privacy and assure automatic restore is unchecked.
The apks are in /data/app/ by the way.

I'm very familiar with these options. I always leave the option to backup to google ticked in case I ever need it (unlikely), but I always have auto' restore unticked, so I'm pretty sure that the automatic downloading of my apps is because the market app recognizes that I own them all when I sign in with my google account, and not because of auto' restore - but correct me if I'm wrong.
So how would I install TB using the apk. Does it have to be done with my computer? Is there another way. Root explorer would be great, but I'd have to install that the same way, which renders it useless in this particular case. What do all you experienced people do to get round this. Or do you just get through it the same way I do???
You can extract your TB using root explorer and save it on your sdcard. Sometimes its stored in /system/app or /data/app.
Usually roms come with a file explorer, so once you have a rom installed go to its file explorer and install your backed up TB. That's how I usually do it. Hope that helps.

you the man Your post helped me figure some stuff out. Your thanks meter just went up by a point.
I use ns_collab most of the time and I did not realise it came with root explorer preinstalled until you mentioned roms coming with a file manager. I did a bit of research and discovered root explorer is preinstalled with ns_collab. I never realised it was part of the rom as I already own root explorer so TB always restores my copy.
I've already made a copy of the TB apk files, so I reckon i've got this sorted for next time I flash a rom.
Just one more thing to check. The apk files I have backed up are:
com.keramidas.titaniumbackup-1.apk
and
com.keramidas.titaniumbackuppro-1.apk
Is this all I need to
I think you only need one of those files. One of em is the pro version. I only have one file and I install it like a regular apk file.

I've got the pro version - so I think this must be right. If you are on the free version and only use one file then I'm cookin

I rooted my phone using SuperoneClick for mac/linux, and it was very simple. It said my phone was rebooting and that my phone was rooted.
Now what do I do? What can I do with rooting? I don't see any difference on the mainscreen. What I did was went to look at my applications and realized I have "SuperUser" now.
When I click that, I have LOG, Apps, and settings, the only thing listed is settings. How can I remove certain bloatware that I don't need?
Get titanium backup so you can uninstall bloatware- if you pay $6 you can freeze the bloatware instead of removing it completely.
A program like Root Explorer can help you get rid of the bloatware as well. Just navigate to System/APP and delete what you don't want. Just be carefull not to delete the wrong software, I think there is a list in one of the threads here of what is safe to get rid of.
Yeah, just get an App manager that uses root access (I use Anttek App Manager). You can either freeze such apps or delete them entirely. You can also change CPU speed, and eventually upgrade to CM7 when it's released, and quite a few other things!
Before doing anything though, I'd recommend backup up your phone with Rom Manager.
Okay, so your steps should be this....
First download ROM manager to back up my system?
Then I download app manager so I can freeze/delete? Freezing might be safer for a newb like me.

If you are thinking about getting into some serious tinkering, custom ROMs, Kernels, etc. You will probably want to use the NVFlash method to load in clockwork recovery. This method and a good backup of your system should help bail you out of the most circumstances.

Backups will be found in the clockworkmod/backups folder. Check there to make sure u are doing it right and have a backup.
What can you do with root? As a beginner I would recommend you go slow:
1- Install interesting apps that require root: http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/07/13/8-great-apps-every-rooted-android-user-should-know-about/
2- Learn how to make and restore nandroid backups w/ Clockworkmod Recovery.
3- Freeze bloatware with Titanium Backup Pro.
4- Eventually get to flashing custom ROMs once we get some !
Backup should be on your external sd card in a folder called clockworkmod/backup

I backed it up, went to clockworkmod and my backup, but it doesn't say anything when I click it, neither does it show up in the manage and restore backup

why would you do this to your phone and have no idea what it does or how to take advantage of it?
that's like hotflashing a bios just because it sounds cool.
I'm new to it and want to freeze bloatware? And plus, I can google on how to do stuff and "take advantage" of it =) Thanks
And I just made a back-up and that one is not showing up, gave it a name and everything, would the best thing to do is to uninstall rom manager and install it?

rofl, i still can't get even make a backup, i tried making the back-up twice, and it's showing me the first one, but when I go to manage/restore, it doesn't come up

The phone came with a game named NOVA. I can't seem to delete it. Just like some of the standard apps on the phone. To get this off must I root the phone? And why? I mean why would they put a game on the phone but not allow you to remove it?!
That's the way they do it.Root ur phone,then use root explorer and remove it.

Considering this Guy doesn't know how to get rid of it I wouldn't advise him to use root explorer the most noon friendly thing to do is root your phone and use titanium backup to uninstall it make a backup incase you still wanna put it back later
i have a htc sensation 4g, tmo phone. I am trying to delete this app called DICE and i cant find a way on how to permanently delete it, i dont even use it at all...
CAN SOME ONE PLEASE HELP ME....

Use an explorer like root explorer and go into system\apps. You will find the apps there. Simply delete the apk file and it is gone for good! I am like you. When I flash a rom I delete all the apps I dont need. So far using stock rom 1.50 rooted, I have had it on now for about 36 odd hours and still sitting at 50% battery. Oh the other place you can delete downloaded apps from is \data\apps.

Titanium Backup allows you to delete system apps. I believe you have to enable an option called "Chuck Norris mode" inside it to be able to, though.
Nah you can just click the app in TB and his Delete. Itll ask if you're sure and then it destroys it, regardless of mode.
TB pro lets you freeze apps though, removing them without actually removing them.

Use Titanium Backup It will allow you to uninstall system app.

TB means Titanium Backup you can get it from market.
I thought when I first flashed a custom ROM that it might useful to keep a backup of stock.
But right now this backup bogging down my sd card. Will it still work if I copy the folder with the backup in my computer and use it afterwards? Or should I delete it and use the method described in these threads to bring it back to stock if I need to?
As long as you do not change the name of the backup folder you should be ok copying it over and moving it back if you need it.
Recommend using a cable to copy it instead of wifi. Any slight change or corruption will change the md5 sum and the backup will fall to restore.

Yes you won't have any problems, just store it on your PC.
In fact I leave all my backups just in case something goes wrong.

I agree with the others, you can keep the Backup on the PC.
However, I do not find the need of it even after Reverting back to Stock (with the methods in the threads). Since, on using the RUU , the phone is just like a factory fresh phone ! U need to set everything up again (& since u r Unrooted & S-ON , u can't Restore the stock Backup as well).
{Contacts / Calendar can be synced via Google Contacts / Calendar &
SMS's can be backed up / Restored via the Inbuilt Backup & Restore of many 3rd Party Messaging Apps (e.g. Go SMS Pro) }
Well, I'd like to thank you all for your answers, I will store the backup on my pc because my opinion is that I might need it(you never know)
