[Q] Language other than English w/keyboard - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Still haven't figured out this whole thread tagging business, so mods are welcome to move/rename this thread properly if I got it wrong.
I'm considering the transformer just for that sweet keyboard dock. But I need to be able to type in Hebrew. Anyone know if this is possible with the hardware keyboard?
As far as I understand how Android works, it's the keyboard that's responsible for determining the language it's typing (instead of sending keycodes for the operating system to decode and translate to the preferred language). So my guess is that the answer is no, but if anyone would know, they'd probably be roaming these forums...

I think it's up to the input method engine (IME) to determine exactly what to send to an application. I believe an IME has the option of intercepting hardware keys and doing different things with it.
So, if there is a Hebrew IME you would like to use, it may work. It probably won't handle all of the hardware keys, but it'd probably be a start.

So does that mean that I need to talk to a software keyboard dev to support Hebrew on hardware keyboards?

Fyi I have the dock and I'm french canadian, and though the dock works great (especially with Polaris, you can actually get work done with this tablet!) I still haven't found a way to type accented chars. I can't believe they didn't think about it, my guess is there is a way to do it but I just don't know how. Probably the same for hebrew. I'll let you know if I find something! On the virtual keyboard, I use thumb keyboard, which is amazing...

There are two new SKUs with Canadian bilingual hardware keboard.

ok, found out how to do accented characters with the keyboard dock. It's really simple in fact, it goes hand-in-hand with the language defined for the Asus Keyboard on the TF. My TF is configured in english, and I use Thumb Keybord in english as my virtual keyboard (which handles accents very well), but when I plug into the dock, I just switch to Asus Keyboard, configured in french. So I now have all I need (ex: éáàùìçêẽ). My guess is it would work the same way for Hebrew. I can't try it since I don't have the Hebrew language pack, but I know Google package different language packs in their OS based on where it's headed.

[Q] Transformer Dock Keyboard- GREEK input

Hello everyone,
I want to buy a TF + dock, but first I need to know some things.
I live in Greece and I need the Greek keyboard. I know that there is not an official honeycomb Greek IME, but Asus has a Greek keyboard.
Can I use the dock with input other than Asus IME?? In Greek there are accents like ή, ά,έ, etc. In windows PC, if you press the button next to L, and then press the letter η, it becomes ή. But when I played with a TF in a shop, the dock keyboard could not input accents.
Also, after a lot of search in my HTC Desire's market, I only found SlideIT keyboard that has a dedicated soft button for accent input, neither GB keyboard nor HTC IME has it (one of the few things that make me jealous of iPhone's greek IME), instead, you have to press η for some time and then swype to ή that pops up.
Is there any solution in this problem?? I really need a hard button to input accents, in order to use it in Document editing and Presentations.
Thank you in advance,
Thanos
Not sure about the greek characters on the keyboard dock being an option, but I've seen keyboard character stickers - you can just place the sticker on the correct key.

Thanx for the help, but it is not the characters that i need on the keyboard, but the actual ability of the keyboard to use accents over the letters.
This is what I mean: in greek, if you press ' before a letter like α,η,ε,ι, and then press the letters, they appear like this: ά,ή,έ,ί. It is greek grammar. I want to know if somehow i can do that with the keayboard dock.
I know that some keyboard apps from market like SlideIT keyboard have a soft button for that, but I havent found it on keyboard dock, hence why I am asking if it is possible,or if I can use the keyboard dock in combination with a keyboard app from market.
Best regards,
Thanos

Ah I see, in that case Android 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 support greek locales. Source: http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-3.0.html , http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-3.1.html ,

So I don't see why the keyboard dock wouldn't default to whatever language you have set in Language & input in settings.
Edit: I just tested this with my keyboard dock, and I can confirm that it works with whatever language you have selected in Language & Input in Settings.
It does work with greek locale, but the problem is with accents..
Anyway, thanx for your help, I already contacted asus greek support over the phone, the guy didnt know the answer and he told me to send an email for them to search it thoroughly and they will reply soon,i hope!

Accented Greek characters appear just fine on my eee pad with android 3.1 by pressing ; key and then the relevant letter. So probably the version you tested in the store had android 3.0 which if I remember correctly didn't even had Greek input support.

Hey mate,
Are you from GR??
The tablet I tested had 3.1, yet there were no accents..The truth is though that there must have been something wrong with the tablet as well, because when I chose between EN-GR on the soft keyboard, sometimes Chinese input appeared. I showed this to the salesman and he told me that they would make a factory reset. Tomorrow I will go by the shop to see if the problem is fixed and check again the keyboard dock accent input.

ICS: Dock Keyboard input language is always English

Hi,
After I have installed ICS, I cannot use any other input language with the hardware keyboard. It is always English. No matter what keyboard I select: Android (Russian), Smart Keyboard or whatever I have english letters appear on key presses. On Honeycomb I had ASUS Keyboard which allowed to switch language using Ctrl-Space combination. Now I don't have the ASUS keyboard anymore. Have anyone been successful in typing non-English on the dock keyboard?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I have already made a quick hack keyboard to produce russian characters on dock keyboard key presses and switch to english using Ctrl-Space. It should be pretty straight forward to add other european languages if some one would like me to. Chinese, Japanese and Korean is tough and I have no plans to support them.
If anyone is interested, here is the hacked by me standard ICS android keyboard, which allows to type both russian and english on Transformer's dock keyboard. Left_Ctrl+Space changes layout. All other features should work correctly - soft keyboard, voice input...

[Q] Asus Keyboard alternative for people with non-US docks

I'm Spanish, and so is my keyboard dock. However, I often type in English with it. Under HC, it wasn't an issue, I used Asus Keyboard in Spanish, and since word suggestion was disabled while using the keyboard, I lost no functionality. This is important because I need to set the Input Method to Asus Keyboard (Spanish) to get the right key layout for my dock keyboard (It mostly changes where some symbols are, such as the @ symbol, and punctuation, on top of adding dead keys for accented letters)
Come ICS, and everything works exactly the same. However, now ICS includes auto-spellcheck independent of the word suggestions, and uses the language of the keyboard to identify the language of what you typed. This means that while I'm typing, and getting the right keyboard layout via the Asus Keyboard (Spanish), every word gets a wiggly red line underneath (and performance suffers a little). When I change to Asus Keyboard (English), I can use auto-spellcheck, BUT it's cumbersome to type (mainly punctuation and symbols).
If there a way to tell the tablet that it should use the Spanish keyboard layout while using another language for spellcheck? Is there any free or paid Input Method app to help me here? I'm not rooted, but feel free to suggest some root only apps and solutions if it's what it takes.

Same problem here. The only custom ROM which works well with my PT dock is Revolver 4

Dock language

Hi!
Quick question. My goal is to have the system language as english and the language on the keyboard dock as norwegian. Currently im only able to get norwegian layout on my keyboard when my system language is set to norwegian and keyboard is the asus standard one. Id like to use swiftkey. I hope someone has a smart tips for me!

If you have root you can try this.
EDIT: LINK https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klswitcherad&feature=more_from_developer#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEwMiwiY29tLmtsc3dpdGNoZXJhZCJd
It worked for me, so I could use Hackers Keyboard and an Swiss-German Keyboard on the Dock Layout.

Try what exactly?
I had the same issue. I want to use English (US) for the system language and Norwegian for the keyboard. I switched to Asus keyboard and set it to Norwegian only, I set the Android keyboard to Norwegian only, and that worked. I'm getting my øæå's while still using US as system language

Thanks for the replys! I did what both of you said and it now works almost perfectly. I have my special keyboards in most cases, ex. like when chatting on gtalk i have them. But when in chrome and replying to this message in the quick reply box I dont have them. I can get them by undocking and using the onscreen keyboard. But not while docked, not on any of the keyboards (stock, asus, swiftkey).
Any tips for this?
Just tried the same scenario in boat browser and it works there, so seems to be a chrome problem. I really prefer chrome, so if anyone could help me out that I'd apprechiate it!

Multiling Keyboard with the Dock

Hello,
I am planning to buy an Asus Transformer Infinity, and as an Armenian language user, I simply do not imagine my life without Multiling Keyboard . But I'm not sure whether this keyboard will work with the dock or not. Will I have the same typing experience with the physical keyboard of the Asus Transformer as I have on-screen (layout etc.)? Has anyone tested it (not exactly the Armenian layout, but just the app with the dock)?
Most importantly, I want to make sure that I will be able to switch between English and a second (Armenian) with the keys combination, as in the case of the default Asus keyboard. Even if this is not a supported feature by default, maybe there are some solutions/fixes for this? I'm ready to root my device or tweak some system files and settings, if it will help.
The question is, there is no other app that supports Armenian input language even half as well as Miltiling Keyboard, that's why I would like to ask the Multiling users here to share your experience with me.
Thank you in advance.
I have been using multiling with the dock without major issue, but with English UK. The only problem I find is that the " ? ! etc characters will not be in the same place. However, you may be able to learn the new positions easily? I'm sorry that I'm not familiar with Armenian to know if there are other critical special characters you will need.
I keep meaning to investigate if it's possible to remap the characters on multiling. I believe it is a better soft keyboard than the Asus one, or the default android 4.1 keyboard which is also installed by default. I'm looking forward to trying the android 4.2 default keyboard.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply, Gudders . Have you tried to switch languages while you use Multiling with the dock, or you use only Engilsh UK? If it is not too difficult, can you please check the Armenian language in the Multiling settings in order to have two selected languages, and try to switch them with the dock (keys combinations, spacebar...), or at last just try to type something Armenian with the dock?
Thanks!
I have been trying to figure out the same but for Spanish. So far I haven't been able to get special characters to work from the dock keyboard. I haven't been able to get things like alt-134 to work for writing a ñ. I waited for 3 months for Asus to release a latin keyboard and they keep saying it is coming soon but it still is not available. I finally just bought an English version but so far haven't been able to figure this stuff out.

I am happy to try for you. I can download and install Armenian. You can switch using shift and spacebar in search, chrome, kingsoft office, gmail and some others. I tried to get a screenshot, but I can't seem to upload it to XDA (browser issue I think). The only problem I had was with the stock browser. I couldn't get it to switch, or type Armenian characters. It may just need a restart. It does type the charactes and switch using the search bar in the stock browser, but on google page or XDA reply box it wouldn't.
Hope that helps.
