Really bad call quality / speakerphone compared to my captivate, help! - HTC Inspire 4G

I recently broke my captivate and got an Inspire 4G. I am noticing a big difference in signal, call, and input speakerphone quality.
I am currently on "H+" and have 1-2 bars at my house. Most times I can't even get a text message to send without hitting "retry." In terms of call quality, I usually have to walk around my house to find a good spot. When I put a call on speakerphone, I can usually hear the other person just fine, but they usually can't hear me at all (its almost as if on my end im not in speakerphone).
I'm really worried because I have some phone interviews coming up, and don't want this phone to negatively affect me. Is it because its in "4G"? Is there a way to set my phone to 3G for better coverage? Help me! At this point I don't care so much about data speeds as much as call quality.
For the record, in all other areas the Inspire is much better than the Captivate IMO.

The speakerphone on the Inspire is on the bottom so thus when you on a call, turn the phone over and the speaker phone will become louder. I had problems with this and tried it once and people could hear me. With the phone facing up and on speaker, no one could hear me. But then after reading on here and on the net, I found out that placing the Inspire facedown will allow the speakerphone to be louder. Hope this helps.

Did u do the swap at an ATT store? I would try replacing the phone... my first had similar issues, along with the proximity sensor being borked..
Then flash the ota update by HTC (in settings WiFi update) you shouldn't have to flash anything for the phone to work out of the box.

Will this help for stock phones too? I don't have a custom ROM or anything, should I still flash?

I got the phone about 3-4 weeks ago at best buy. Could I really see a drastic difference in signal quality if I got a replacement? My phone is completely up to date. I just don't understand how I get such a huge difference in signal quality compared to my captivate.

Personally I would choose Desire.
thanks, i see the only diff.is fm radio and more ram on the desire everything else is exactly the same .but does any one know if tmobile usa is getting it or i have to spend a couple of hundred bucks to get one over seas...or just get nexus.....? what do you think..
The desire: is sexier, has better RAM, is thinner without compromising the screen size, have tactile buttons that makes you certain that you pressed a function key, and have an optical track-pad.
Keep in mind that if you have sticky hands due to sticky food, beverages, work, and etc, than you shouldn't get the Nexus 1. Once those things are in your trackball, you literally can't get them out. And once they are in, than the trackball will stop working, just like every other BlackBerry with those trackballs.
Basically, the Desire is better than the Nexus 1.
If you are buying a Desire in regards to Nexus 1 as a contender, than get the Desire.
If you have a Nexus 1 and a decided to buy a Desire, than you are making a huge mistake because you aren't getting enough improvements through this upgrade.
There you have it! The word upgrade should answer everything.
thanks ,i knew it desire was better, tmobile just told me that if i get desire it wouldn't work here in los angeles ,so guess i have to stick with nexus, and i will save 250 buck too, oh well may be in a couple of month i give this one to my chick and i get a better one lol
I don't think there is a desire available with t-mobile's 3g bands while there is a nexus with them, so you might want to consider that.
I personally like the look of the N1 better, but that is completely subjective. Whether you think sense UI is worth it is completely subjective too. Same with the capacitive buttons.
The only thing that objectively makes the desire better is the FM radio, and a bit more ram (which will be required by sense anyway).
The nexus one has a noise cancelling speaker for when you are on calls, and i don't know if the desire is rootable yet.
According to the site linked, the nexus one is slightly thinner.
Also i used 2 blackberrys over 2 years and only had trackball problems on the older model, which was second hand anyway. The trackball is the primary navigation tool on the BB, it is only secondary, or thirdary on the N1, so i don't believe it to be an issue.

Its a matter or personal preference I'm afraid...the specs bewteen the devices or almost identical. I'm getting the HTC Desire (hopefully within the next week), but again this is just my own personal preference as I think its better
I now have the Desire - and I'm not regretting my choice. SenseUI is good, and the speed of the phone (when compared to an outgoing Hero) is immense. I've also owned an iPhone in the past, and I can honestly say that this phone trumps the Apple effort (except in Apps).
I would recommend the phone to anyone - but once someone sees it, they don't need recommendations.

The Samsung 4G Naked: Side by Side in the Nude with the Vibrant

Good Evening,
After taking the 4G apart several times I decided I would take pictures to highlight the few differences. Some noticeable differences:
1) antenna placement on the board, matching contact placement different on the back housing underside
2) the connector for the headset is different and the ribbon is labeled T959V (model # for the 4G)
3) less memory which can be seen thru the software
4) the GPS still sucks and does not work on this one
5) maybe I received a defective unit but there is an overheating issue. the 4G uses 200ma more than the vibrant but maybe the phone or the charger is defective as it keeps overheating and with time charging seems to be more of an issue/concern. software confirms this with error message.
Enjoy the pics.

Yes - confirmed - camera has the same plug connector. I swapped various parts back & forth to test things out (actually using them, took pictures, etc.) and the only things that are not compatible are the headset plug connector; I guess that is why it is the only part inside that has T959V labeled on the ribbon itself, and the back housing - the antenna contacts receptor(?) on the underside, since one of them was moved to the top of the board, which is also labeled T959V instead of i9000 as it is on the Vibrant.

The modem is one of the black chips soldered onto the board. So no I don't think it would be that easy even if you have those robot precise soldering skills. I will upload a picture that shows the chips and identifies them on the Vibrant (same layout as the 4G but obviously the modem is different on the 4G. Then you have to consider that the extra 20% juice this phone consumes (1000ma on the 4G vs 800ma on the Vibrant) is to power the new modem. So even if you did have the soldering skills, then you might have a power problem.

Yes, it is a possibility. The phone keeps overheating as well when charging, it gets extremely hot. I think this may be a defective unit I received.
i got my 4g and so far no problems with battery or GPS... gps was the first thing i tried and it worked great. im guess some of these crappy phones are slipping through Quality Assurance on the assembly line...

You are totally right. You would think after the GPS mess & outrage with the Vibrant that they would be more careful this second time around. Apparently they did not listen or learn. It really makes me consider going for the LG Optimus 2X instead of the S2. I really want to get the S2 but these problems keep worrying me. It is like loving someone but they keep beating you up, do you get out of the relationship or keep hoping it gets better? Hmmm....
my gps works alright, sometimes it's a little wonky but nothing horribly concerning. i haven't gotten the overheating issue once although my battery is kind of sad.. i've rooted it and used setcpu to underclock when idle but still just short battery life.
i have noticed, however, that i have a green tint to my screen. noticed when taking photos that skin tones are off, then i email it to myself and check on other phones/computers and sure enough, it's just my 4g screen that seems to be tinted green a little. anyone else notice this or is it just me?

Hmm that sucks, if you are going to keep it, that is a problem I would not want to have, try get it exchanged. Thanks for letting us know about your problem.
Maybe someone has a solution and can offer some advice for the green tint?
This thread alone just convinced me that there is no way I would upgrade from the vibrant to this. What a let down. I considered getting it at first but thankfully realized they are just the same phone.
Moved to general as not android development
My friend and I both got 4Gs' at the same time. My gps fixed within 2 meters in my home, his running side by side took a long time to aquire. We rebooted his, gps took a long time to aquire but after 2 min, it did, but was within 9 meters of same location.

I wanna know...
I see the GPS is an issues. But I wanna know from yall that have the SGS 4G, is this the phone to buy right now on Tmobile or go a different route?
Im still rockin a Touch Pro 2. Contract about to end soon. I was lookin at the myTouch4G but the SGS 4G has better looking radios. Where the myTouch only has the 14.4 stuff.
What's yalls thought on it?
I have used both and they are both good phones. The decision for me was made by the screen on the GS4G, the Super AMOLED just looks so much better to me. The MT4G is a more solid feeling phone and it is plenty fast (processing wise). The GS4G is noticeably faster on the 4G network and I also get faster speeds while on WiFi, not sure why but I will take it! Coming from the TouchPro 2 you will be happy with either, I just prefer the GS4G.

this stabilized my 4g signal

First off, i bought this because it was a $1 at the time while i was getting some cases and a other stuff on the off chance it would work. I've actually had it for a month and just barely decided to put it on today to check it out.
some stuff on this site can be pretty low quality. but anyways... I put this (making sure the part that says upside with arrow is pointing up) under my battery to the left of the white sticker with the serial numbers for my phone. and i made sure not to touch the sticky back except just on the edge. i used the cardboard that came with to smooth it down onto plastic.
now this seemed to maybe add a bar or less but that isn't what i liked. it definitely helped my phone from dropping from 4g to 2g constantly from low signal in my house. and in my house I almost NEVER can stay on 4g, we have a lot of electronics in our house plus we need another cell tower out here in Salt Lake (West Jordan) in my area or something. but my phone signal has only dropped down below 4g one time and went from 1-2 bars, sometimes 3 bars to 2-3, usually 3 bars consistently all day since i put it on this morning. this can't be a coincidence because i know my house and this is my 5th g2x and also my last vibrant all had a bad signal dropping problem. so try it out if you want, the promo code CELL7 is posted saying 7% off too. also promo code freeship gives free shipping it looks like if you order over $25 worth of stuff.
im interested to see if this works for others. like i said though it more stopped my signal from jumping around than really adding a bunch of bars or anything. but for a buck its cool with me
the ad honestly looks like a bunch of B.S. but if anyone ends up buying it let me know if you have similar results.

Wow! I tried stuff like this on other phones. I noticed no difference.
Glad it helped you out.

lol yeah. well im going to say that it doesnt seem to help a much after having it for a bit.. its a little better but i actually have noticed a better improvement by keeping my account 1.0 and wifi calling installed and unfrozen. Signal seems to jump around less. but at the cost of some battery.... not sure which is more significant for me. its bull**** that if i drive down the road a little i get full bars with 4g but in my house/neighborhood i get 1-3 bars
How can an antenna work if it isn't physically connected to the board? These things are just a rip off.
If they actually worked, wouldn't you think these would be a gold mine; or they would implement them into the phone casing or battery cover?

Not necessarily...sometimes I need to tether at work (absolutely no data signal better than a couple bars of 2G). I grab a metal colander from the kitchen, loop my phone over the top, and point it toward the nearest tower...viola...2 to 3 bars of 4G. I know that wasn't really your point...but...
The colander thing works if you don't mind the crazy looks that come with it...I kinda enjoy 'em.
I agree a colander will work because, just like wifi, cellular is radial vs directional.
If you make wifi or cellular directional by ways of a pringles can or a metal colander, that is one thing. But a ball of wires next to your phone won't do anything, which essentially is what that antenna sticker is, just a coil of wire.
They really are a rip off. Mind over matter I guess. If you "feel" it works then it is worth a dollar (which is a ripoff in itself since they can be had for $.25/free)

The HTC Sensation Death Grip - GSMArena

Is this the reason why people seem to be suffering with poor signal? Not good news
HTC Sensation suffers from death grip, iPhone 4 caught snickering
But then again nobody I know carries the phone around flat in the palm of their hand, so probably just another overreaction from the HTC Haters
just saw this at gsmarena too... can anyone do a re-test if this is true? i want to get an htc phone but these things really bother me.. please confirm guys
Just about every phone I've ever had had a death grip issue, including the Vibrant and the MT4G. Since the phones had to be held in a particularly unorthodox manner to experience this, it was a non-issue.

I agree, if you look at the video of the Bluetooth music, when holding the phone in the normal position it works perfectly.
Yep. Just people overreacting and trying to make news.
I'd love to see a video of a phone that can't be made to suffer some signal loss by holding it in a certain way.
The key question is does it suffer significant loss by holding it in a normal manner. More practically do you get wifi, call or GPS drops when using the phone normally. Show me that video and I'll care.
I don't see this as an issue since how often or why do would you need to put a death grip on your phone
Tried to replicate these issues, cannot. The initial signals must be too weak to start with, so disappear completely - or, the whole thing is a fake.....?
Bluetooth is shorter range anyway, isn't that the point, it's meant to be low power.
My Sensation wifi reception isn't the greatest but I have no issue with it, however I hold the phone
Tbh I am surprised at a site like gsmarena posting 'sensational' claims..... without knowing the whole story.
In 2 words: bull ****.
Really, I can't understand why people are searching those issues which are not issues at all O-o
I mean, every phone does suffer from signal drops and all that kind of things, but well.. it really depends in which position.
If you look in the video, the phone works perfectly when holding it normally.. just when you hold it like I dont know what ( who will hold it like this?) the signal drops.
So I think there is nothing to worry about..
I think that this is a valid issue since when you browse the internet and hold the phone horizontally for landscape viewing then this might cause the wifi signal to drop. I have read this issue also on the HTC Desire S. I went to the store to try and its really true that when you hold it horizontally, the wifi signal would drop. So i guess that this is also happening on the HTC Sensation.
Isn't GSM arenas phone missing a contact?
slash gears sensation has an extra contact thus I'm assuming equals better reception.

It's because SlashGear has the US version while GSMArena has the UK one.
Yeah, apparently the 4G model has an extra contact point.
The T-Mobile version needs another contact because of 1700 MHz band (not sure, I'm just guessing)
if the sensation is anything like the HD2, the GSM Antenna is in the lower part. On top are the Wifi+BT (same Antenna) and the GPS. Total of three antennas.
Also, the HD2 had the same arrangment were the back cover (plastic)had all the antennas & they were connected by similar conacts. The difference simply is that with the sensation the cover comes out when removing the battery while the HD2 had the plastic back fixed. So if there is a problem with this design we should have noticed it in the HD2 first.
Another thing, the BT streaming sample done, as per swedish source was done at 6m distance. which kinda long for purpose of bluetooth!!
Does that mean the Sensation's Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, Radios won't work if the back cover is removed? That would be too bad coz my HD2 works fine even if the battery is exposed..
Today I found out that I am also suffering with my sensation.
It is absolutely no bull****.
This is my third HTC, I have next to my Sensation a HD2.
With my HD2 the deathgrip was only a problem when i cover the hole with my top hand, i never normaly do that so it wasn't a problem.
But with my sensation its a much bigger problem.
If i hold him in my right hand, there is no problem.
if i hold him in my left hand and touch with my right finger then you see that he is losing signal.
if i hold him in landscape mode then almost all my wifi signal is gone.
If i hold him in my right hand and tick with my right finger on the top of the sensation, the wifi wignal drops down.
And the biggest problem is that he loses the wifi signal and then he is searching again for wifi.
I have never tested Bluetooth, and i have 3 antenna points in the cover.
maybe i will make a video later.
and sorry for my bad english, google translate Helps me

because of the bad range.
Hard to belive ppl are not thinking this is a problem.
That Position is MUCH more common then the Iphone 4 death grip... Also the issue is much more prominent on the Sensation then on the Iphone 4.
EDIT: I can NOT belive how accepting ppl are of the HTC sensations faults. It REALLY saddens me.
PPl.. there is no need to Defend HTC with your life. They are one Company. We should be choosing best company not being fan boys. Every1 should be able to recognize the problems phone have.

I was a littlebit a fanboy from HTC, I really like HTC's design.
But the Sensation dissapoint me.

wheres the line

i see all these people on here saying theyre going to return or exchange their S6. i have a note 4 and it prbly has half the things theyre returning their S6 for, honestly i never bothered to check. my note 4 does have bad lag, that other ppl suppousedly dnt have, but i missed my return date waiting for a patch/upgrade to fix my lag.
i totally understand paying $600+ on a phone and wanting a good working phone but as a samsung fan whos gotten flawed phone after flawed phone ive accepted the fact that im never going to get a perfect phone. so my question is where do you all draw the limit? or are u wanting that perfect phone.
list of the flawed sammys
S3: found out it couldnt read memory cards after return date (got a refurb s3 that could read memory cards)
s5: antenna problems (started having rly slow internet)
note 4: phone lags badly.
I think people just want a phone that doesn't arrived to their door already scratched, or with a 24 hour led light on, or in my case, a charger that doesn't charge the phone out of the box.
Have a reorder processing as we speak. Software issues are absolutely nuts (auto brightness turning on/off on its own, Samsung keyboard keeps reactivating, MMS not working, etc) and there's something VERY wrong when I can reboot the phone, turn on *only* Google Maps and Pandora, and the phone runs out of memory, closing Pandora down. I mean, what the ****, Samsung?
I doubt the new phone will fix these issues, and I think I'm just going back to my Nexus 5.

It will, those issues are not normal. My phone shows none of those.
However, I have a scratch under the top bezel of my glass and the Always on LED on the flash so I am going to get a replacement.
can somebody upload a pic of the always on led?

actually just saw the thread on it. mine isnt arriving till the 17th so idk if ill even be affected by this.
yeah i understand these things suck, but i feel like every galaxy launch has had a similar incident. when i got the s5 there was the camera incident and the antena incidents.

Yeah, if my replacement device shows up tonight and has ANY defect, this is just going to be a straight return, and I'll wait for another model. I mean, I am a Samsung avoider usually. I tend to not like how they do business, how they advertise, the products they put out... The S6 looked THAT good to me, that I would put my history with them behind. If I get 2 defective phones in a row (and I mean this new one needs to be PERFECT) it's going right back and I'll wait for the '15 Moto X or something. Maybe the G4.

The good news is, there were no defects. The bad news is because there was no phone. It was on the UPS truck to be delivered on the 8th, and returned to the depot around 12AM. It never left the depot on the 9th, even though UPS swore up and down that it was out for delivery. Contacted T-Mobile, they contacted UPS, confirmed it was lost. Now, here's the kicker: T-Mobile left me a voicemail saying *I* had to file a claim with UPS to make things right. Called them right the **** back and told them it wasn't my responsibility. They're shipping another out tomorrow. Who knows when I'll get it?
