Hey, just curious what everyone's favorite ROM's are, and what the performance levels are between the ones you have tested. I used to use Darkyy's with Speedmod and Glitterballs, and now I'm on Phoenix 4.5 with Suckerpunch Kernel. There are weird UI glitches in Phoenix and issues with the Kernel as well, but the performance is awesome when it works correctly. I'm also interested in a change of flavor from the green/black of Phoenix, but I'd rather change to a new ROM than a new theme.
So I am just looking for opinions and intelligent discussion on what your favorite ROM & Kernel setup is, and why, with a focus on performance in mind.
Thanks guys.
Joel

Come home to my setup in my signature
Cognition 3.04 with SuckerPunch release 49. It's a dream phone. Overclocked and UVd with great battery life and no sleep death so far.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
I've used Cog 3.04 up until yesterday when I flashed Precision 3.0 along with SuckerPunch #49 kernel. Very smooth and even faster than when I was on Cog, though I did only use the stock kernel with that ROM. I am loving the minimalistic theme as well. I haven't had any problems and the battery life even seems a bit better then what I experienced with Cog.

Can anyone explain to me what kernels are what is their function? I noticed that the update did not change my kernel. Is that a bad thing that they did not include a new one in the update? Also I am voinv to be installing xboarxers stock. Rom first to root the phone and I want know if I should chance the kernal and what effect it will have. I am taking small steps because want to understand what I am doing. Thank for any help you guys can give me.

The kernel is the lowest point in the system. It controls how the software communicates with the hardware: how the CPU behaves, how the buttons behave, how the screen functions, etc.
The main use of custom kernels is to Overclock and Undervolt. OC means pushing your CPU to be faster than it was ever intended to be; you get better performance but if overclocked too long, it will be damaged. Worst case scenario, you will literally melt your motherboard. But this is only a danger if you leave it overclocked 24/7 and constantly push the CPU to its limits (playing 3d games for instance)
Faux's kernel can OC to 1.5 GHz and Morfic's can OC to 1.1.
The next common use is Undervolting, which means giving your CPU less electricity than it would like. This again is extremely dangerous if not done properly, but yields noticeably better battery life. Morfic's is the best for UV IMO, though you cannot change the undervolting, he has it locked into what he has found to be the best. And this isn't necessarily a bad thing, as too much UVing will cause potentially serious stability issues with the device. It's not nearly as dangerous as improper OCing (it won't permanently ruin the hardware) but it is a danger. Faux's lets you UV to your heart's content.
Faux's is better if you want performance, because it has higher OC. Morfic's is better if you want battery life, because it has better UV and the CPU clock speeds themselves are better tuned for lower speeds than higher ones.
I absolutely love my faux kernel. its at 1.4 and amazing battery life. The screen sensitivity is awesome. Honestly its all prefrence.... I won't go away from cm7w/ faux

I'd start here. Or just google info on the linux kernel (since that's what android runs on top of.)
Can you flash faux kernel on top of bionix 2
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
When you flash a kernel, you just need to know what the base of it is to pick the proper one. There are really only 3 bases at the moment:
1. Stock 2.2 That'd be faux's .5, and I know morfic has some older 2.2 based kernels in his thread.
2. Stock 2.3 (Which faux is working on now, there are a couple floating around)
3. CM7 Faux and morfic both have kernels that work here. (2.3.4 and 2.3.5 based roms use this, miui, and of course cm7 )
Bionix is based on 2.2 (Which I haven't actually checked, but I'm sure it's in the first post.)
For most of them, just read the first post, or even the title. It'll say what it's based on, and then you can flash whatever you want. Just always do a nandroid backup before, you never know if you might for whatever reason have to flash back. If you don't, you need to reinstall your rom (or manually change the kernel and modules, of course) to get back to what the rom came with.
Happy flashing.
If i am running stock rooted GB OTA, can I flash faux's latest Kernel 006 with ext4?? Or do you have to have an ext4 rom to be able to flash ext4 kernels?
Thanks.
Thanks a lot that shed some light on. The subject
So it appears that the dev will tell you which mernels arw compatible with their rom in the thread for that particilar rom. If I want to use eglesblood which is 2.3.4 or.5 xan I use tbe stock kernel? Also what is the difference between the .3 .4 and .5 in the gingerbread make is that carrier specific or moel specific like the blackbwrry 8520 is for tmo and 8530 is for sprint?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
2.3.4 and 2.3.5 are based on cm7 code, so you'd use the cm7 based kernel. (LG hasn't given us 2.3.4 or 2.3.5).
As far as ext4, it's a different file system is all. Faux's kernels mount the data and system partitions as ext4, but don't actually convert them. Morfic's do a full convert. Ext3/4 support is in the kernel, not the rom, so as long as the kernel supports it you can do it. (Which every custom kernel I've seen supports ext4)
If you want more information, google is your friend. Here is a pretty simplistic explanation of the ext2,3,and 4.
http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2011/05/ext2-ext3-ext4/
As for the differences, 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 had some major framework changes. 2.3.4 to 2.3.5 seems to be only minor bugfixes. If you want full changelogs, I'd google them.
So if I want to use eglesblood then I have to change the kernel too? Do I have to do it separately or is it included in the rom?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
You never *need* to change kernels. Using the kernel that comes with the roms works just fine. Only time you need to change kernels is if you want to overclock, (never really saw the point in it, and quadrant benchmarks are useless.) want tun or cifs support, undervolting, ext4, etc.
If you don't need any of those things, or don't know what they are, just stick with the kernel that comes with the rom.
Okay that's cool so all I have to do is put EB on my SD card and flash away I am thinking about starting simple first with either xboarders stock or tweeked
.

What ROM/Kernel setup are you guys using that you've found good stability with?
Any suggestions?
Skyrocketeer with flashed Rogers radio. It's very stable, had some slight issues with the sms timestamps but with the help of SMStimeFIX from market it was solved. Also still looking to confirm if i obtain full 50mb/s LTE speed but until i got back to that spot where i always get it, i wont be able to confirm. It's a nice looking rom, snappy, fast, good battery life, nice emprovements
Stock rom. I've tried a few, including sky ics. Good rom but I still found stock more stable. But it depends on the user. I don't like to search as to why apps keep fcing. I just like it when I use my phone that it runs smooth. The rogers stock is good. Isn't any bloaware to slow it down. However I did get rid of the odd app and widget installed
hey i tried some roms soo far. the roms/kernel id recommend is either use sky/tpc/rocketeer. kernel wise id stay away from all kernels i mean no offence given devs work hard on kernel, but unless you rogers folks wanted a heat around camera area for everyday i know i don't use stock rogers kernel its snappy @ 1.5ghz + no lags + my heavy day to day lasts me 1 and 1/2 day with full use of wifi,bt,browser and games. just remove all the bloatware and u'll see.
Stock Rom for me, although I have started to play with Go Launcher to spice things up a little bit. Waiting for ICS my self.
Stock here as well, tried a few roms, and aside from over or under clocking, which I love, there haven't been any roms or kernels as stable so far. If someone comes up with a great way to 'clock let's hear it!
Also, anyone have a comprehensive list of bloatware on the 727R yet? That's a post I'd love to see!

Runnin skyicecream sandwich jugglin between faux and romracer kernel cant get the romracer to deepsleep. Running faux at 1.5gz max with setcpu and its pretty stable no fc or sod. Smooth and fast.
rooted using sky ICS
tried cyanogen for a bit and liked it but sky ics just looks so nice. i get a few fcs but it doesnt bother me cause it reboots the program real fast
really good battery life on it, 15 hours at 70%
I've been on Android for over 3 years now..
Had so many different roms on my devices. This one I've used syrocketeer, was nice, smooth stable, not many issues.
Tried SkyIce Cream Sandwich rom. Was pissed off it was just a theme of ICS on 2.3.6 IMO name is very misleading, but whatever, to each his own. Was a good stable rom if you want a nice overlay of ICS, had a few issues with FC but the dev gives pretty good instructions on how to fix it.
Most of these I was running primarily until Cyanogen team came out with something stable enough to put on my phone. As I've always found CM to be the best thing you can run.
Newest build for me has been very stable - running Da_G kernel. No issues except for the call issue posted in their forums. I think that was supposed to be fixed in the latest update, however I haven't gotten around to updating. Turning GPS on seemed to work to fix the issue tho. I would never change to anything else (unless real ICS rom came out, then would only stay on that till CM9 came out with a stable enough release)
I have confirmed in most parts of Toronto where reception is decent enough I'm getting an average of 30+ mbps. Closer to downtown core upwards of 40mbps and in a few cases up to 58mbps. So LTE works great on that ROM as well.
i use Bouyancy 1.2.1 with 360 launcher doesn't change baseband smooth and snappy
SkyRocket ICS 2.9.2
faux kernal 2.6.35.14......
max clock 1.296
min clock 384
screen off max 384
screen off min 192
runs smooth as hell, great battery life
not one issue with ANYTHING!!!
Sky is very smooth and nice with faux kernel no problems here
TPC V3 with Da_g 0.43 kernel. No issue at all. Very stable.

using sky ics for a few weeks now with no fc's on either faux or rom racer kernal.
Rooted, stock rom & kernel, ADW launcher.
I was loving Darkyy on my SGS but even though I played with a couple ROMS and kernels on the SII LTE I went back to stock. Solid, fast, and good battery life.
I did freeze and uninstall most of what I could identify as bloatware and the horrid touchwiz slowpoke. I picked up ADW EX when it was on the 10 for 0.10 sale, and like it better (landscape mode and the ability to customize the dock easily is a big bonus).

Using the Stock rom. Haven't had one issue with it and since I'm coming from a Touch pro 2 running WM 6.1 this thing is fast enough as is......For now.
Stock myself, played around with a few ROMs but ended up liking the reliability of the stock. Eagerly awaiting ICS and CM 9.
I have flashed almost all of the ROMs on here and in my opinion the snappiest one was the Quikwiz 1.0.3 and skyrocketeer was pretty quick as well. Right now im running stock though because as almost everybody said it is the most stable build for Rogers rightnow. I am trying to get the stock-ish kernel by romracer on my phone right now. If anybody has flashed that i would like to know how the battery and speed were? Thanks
Stock Rom for me, i tried Da_G's Kernel but got alot of SOD's. There were a few fixes such as deleting modules etc but none of those ever fixed it. Sadly I'm getting poor battery life on my Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE even with JuiceDefender Ultimate installed. Before JuiceDefender I was about to take the phone back, now it's just sub par battery life. As for now I'm done with messing around on flashing the phone , at least until we get our stock ICS ROM. It should be coming out soon, that's my hope.
I've flashed Sky and TPC. Both are fairly stable, but I'm not getting any where close to the battery life some of these AT&T guys are getting.
I'm a fairly heavy user—LTE on all day, but I have wifi on at work and home.
I personally don't feel that flashing a new ROM has done anything for my battery life, however it HAS improved my usability factor (both Sky and TPC have been able to grant me a sizeable performance increase).
Hey guys, I bought myself a Nexus S one month ago and I've flashed about 15 different ICS ROMs. Is it just me or are there almost no stable ICS ROMs? All of them had random reboot issues apart from AOKP and CM9. I had no reboots on AOKP but the clock got stuck every 2nd day, so my phone wouldn't wake me in the morning which is even worse. CM9 I liked a lot, but I couldn't phone in the hands free mode (don't know the propper name of it in english) because the mic wasn't loud enough. Currently I'm on ras cream sandwich and it reboots while i'm listening to music which is really frustrating. Oh and before i forget, I always flashed matr1x kernel and used smartass governor, no OC.
Is there any stable ICS ROM apart from CM9 and AOKP? Or can i fix the other bugs?
Thanks in advance!
Your problem is the kernel, not the rom. My phone also reboots while listening to music in the undervolted matrix kernel. Stay with rascream and flash the _thalamus kernel and see how stable it is. That kernel is really stockish and stable. If you don't want to flash you could try to raise your voltages to stock values in nstools. Some phones like undervolting, some not. ;-)
Verstuurd van mijn Nexus S met Tapatalk
hm I didn't know matrix kernel was undervolted, I thought that's only the case with trinity TEUV kernel by default well I'll try another kernel for the time being and see how that goes.
Yeah. Some of our phones can't handle the voltages mathkids kernel supplies outta the box unfortunately. Either adjust them back to the stock ones or search for another kernel. I prefer either thalamus or Simple Kernel. I just recently flashed the latest version of the former and its great. You can try Air kernel if you want a few more governors and whatnot.

Like.. that's what STOCK is all about.
The people that made the phone are the most interested in making a stable ROM, no compromises.
Most stable and fast rom
Try APEX ROM 1.1.2 (latest release), that's what i'm using until aokp milestone 6 comes out. there is no lag, no reboots (just if u OC too much),...
Slim rom with no tweaks is smooth. Try it and u will not regret it.
Good luck
Vs Nexus S 4G
MIUI roms are very stable these days.

Well it differs from phone to phone. My phone is good with Matrix kernel. Might be one of the best custom kernels to run for my phone if not the best. Matrix isn't a compromise for my phone.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G
For several days I'm with Slim ICS and Matr1x and I have no problems with random restarts. No OC and no tweaks!
Try CyberGR ROM
I have installed CyberGR ROM and I have not suffered any reboot. I followed one by one all the steps of the development part and I'm quite happy with it.
Good luck.
Well, if you really want stable, get Stock 4.0.4. I'm on 1100+ hours on uptime without a single reboot... The only thing I've done to the stock 4.0.4 is getting root.
I would also like to know. from my own experience, stock 4.0.4 is best, but can CM9 very be made that stable? I'm running it now with ink kernel and no tweaks and it seems slightly laggy :/ should I flash brainmasters tweak pack?

Bugless Beast hasn't given me any issues. I've rebooted to flash other kernels but the only two kernels that have given consistent performance are Simple(stock with bln) and thalamus. Once I get my new battery, I may see how long I can go without rebooting. But if you want rock solid, go with stock ROM. Hell, my cousin has an EVO 4G and has almost 1200 hours up time. Lol.

AOSP+ definitely belongs to this category. Stock with a few useful modifications.
You should try AOKP again
I know you've already used AOKP but you should try/flash it again. I'm sure that the clocking was freezing because of some flashing issue.
Go to this link and download the milestone-5 version (m5) of AOKP. Also, you should use this rom with matr1x v19.5 cfs.
Milestone means that it's stable, so you shouldn't have problems with it. I use this rom and matr1x 19.5 on my daily device and haven't had any problems nor reboots. Great performance and great battery life too. Besides that, the rom is highly customizable.
Apart from stock, Have you tried BuglessBeast? Very stable. No need to flash any custom kernels.
if ur using ra scream use one of the trinity kernels. its super stable, super smooth, and long battery life
im using this black ice rom, in love with it .. shud try

I searched the internet and apparently I'm not the only one with that problem. I tried AOKP twice (i think build 32 or something and m5), always with matr1x kernel. Could this also be a kernel Issue?
I don't know that much about Android, but what I found out in the past days is that my Nexus S can't handle UV. I also get very high Android OS battery usage sometimes but I don't know why. High meaning Android OS once used more battery than display even though i had 2h screen on time. I suspect it's got something to do with titanium backup not restoring apps correctly, but that's just a stab in the dark.
Currently I'm on Apex v1.1.2 with stock kernel. No random reboots so far. I didn't restore apps via titanium backup (which was a pain in the ass). So far Android OS seems to use way less battery than before. But yesterday I had something like SOD when received a call while using TuneIn, so I had to pull the battery and call back. Not what I call stable.
I know that's a lot of text and probably also a bit OT sometimes but I hope some of you will read it , I'm not really a flashoholic and I'm getting sick and tired of switching roms, but I need my phone to be reliable. I'm really tempted to just switch back to stock ROM with stock kernel at the moment...
the things I'd really like to have is bln, notification toggles and stability.
I recently rooted my Mytouch 4G Slide (s-off) and have been trying out several roms, my favorite of which are: Blue6IX's Bulletproof rom, Virtuous Primadonna, and Virtuous Inquisition. I like all of these, since each have their benefits over the other. Bulletproof is more solid and maintains the ability to use all stock features, most importantly the camera. The Virtuous roms are both visually more exciting (Inquisition is an ICS style rom), BUT the camera crashes if you even try certain camera features or some random things fail like trying to send a photo via text. All those pros and cons aside, the main feature keeping me on Virtuous Inquisition is the overclock kernel. It overclocks up to 1.7Ghz, and that's damn cool if you ask me.
Since the Virtuous roms have so many issues, I want to be able to use a rom like Bulletproof and still be able to overclock it. I looked all over this forum for overclock info/kernels and found just 2 threads. One was an older one by Romanbb called Kanged (still available for download), the other was from Blue6IX including several variations of kernels (but none of the download links exist anymore).
Then I did some more research on the kernel used in the Inquisition rom. Everything I read pointed to a developer that, apparently, only has overclock kernels for the HTC Sensation (can't think of his name at the moment). This seemed a little strange that a kernel for a different phone would be compatible with mine.
So this is where I reached a dead end with even more questions than I started with:
Are overclock kernels specific to each device? In other words: if I found one for a Sensation or whatever, would I be able to use it with my MT4GS?
Since Romanbb's "Kanged" OC kernel seems to be the only one still available for the MT4GS, would it still be compatible with newer roms? And for that matter, does is have to be used with a particular version of Android, or Sense vs ICS?
You see, I don't know enough about overclock kernels (or even kernels, themselves) to know all the right questions to ask in this situation. All I know is that Bulletproof has the stability I want, while Inquisition has the speed I need. And before I go cutting & pasting bits and pieces of one rom into another, I'd like to know what I should be doing or if I'm even on the right path. So maybe someone can point me in the right direction and help me to understand compatibility of oc kernels & how they can/can't be implemented. Also, where the hell do I even find oc kernels for this model of phone?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me to understand all of this. And I apologize in advance for any headache my abundance of questions and lack-of-understanding may cause.
All of the ICS/JB roms that use the v3 kernel by TeamDS are overclocked to 1.7ghz as well. Oh and don't flash a Sensation kernel...you wont boot. Also I'm not sure but I think the latest bulletproof (v1.1) has overclock to 1.7
Edit btw this belongs in the general because this is a question

I'll check those out. I've noticed there's a common trend between all ICS roms for the MT4GS: they all have the same camera failures as well as plenty of other random issues, although some have more than others. So I'm hesitant about trying any ICS roms older than a couple months, since it seems that a truly stable ICS rom for this phone with minimal issues doesnt exist yet. But yes, I will check it out.
As for Bulletproof, if it does have overclock then something is wrong because I tried SetCPU (several others as well) and I wasn't able to set a max frequency higher than 1200-ish mhz (or 1100 something?). No matter what I tried the frequency stayed at stock settings. Thats why I'm trying to find out where to find a compatible oc kernel and how to install/flash it on top of a rom that didn't originally have an oc kernel.
With the Virtuous Inquisition rom that I'm currently on, it allows a max of 1728mhz which is great. Although for some reason whenever I set up a new profile within SetCPU or even change the Min/Max settings, the setting doesn't have an effect on the actual frequency longer than a couple seconds before reverting back to default. And I tried disabling Perflock but I get "Error: Misc Exception.. ". Which brings me back to my original thought about the kernel used in this rom; I found the name of the dev and kernel version used in this rom: "SebastianFM -Sensation 3.0.13 kernel". When I looked up that guy's kernels, they all seem to be exclusively for the Sensation, but his kernels are being used in this Inquisition rom that is compatible for the Sensation, Evo3D, and MT4GS. So the fact that this (apparently) is a Sensation kernel might explain why my settings in SetCPU have no effect and I'm unable to disable Perflock.
Still though, it would be nice to get the best of both worlds; stable rom, fast-as-hell kernel.

Thanks. Didn't know that, I figured this was a development-related question so the "Development" section made sense, and I made sure I labeled it with a "( ? )" to avoid any confusion. My mistake, I suppose. And although I've been a long time reader of this forum, I didn't set up an account til last fall and hadn't actually started a thread til now. Now I know. Soo, is there a way to move this thread and I'm just not seeing it?

No, you are not allowed to move threads, even if you created them.
The post was reported, and the thread moved. For future reference, you can do this as well - but also for future reference, no questions should ever be in the Development section. Thanks!
