[Q] Skype on Desire S - HTC Desire S

Hi
I read that Skype (a new version) would be installed on the desire s?
Is it only on the unbranded version? Have a vodafone device and don't find it.

I just downloaded it from Market no trouble at all...I'm on unbranded DS

and then you had the version with videocall?
I downloaded the marketplace version and can't even log in.

And it works? With video?

new skype update today
enabled video calling for htc desire s, google nexus s, htc saga, sony ericsson xperia neo & pro
yes!

I just came on to post this , a quick test and it seems to work ok .
EDIT -
I just had a couple of video calls to Skype contacts , me using the Desire S and them using their laptops .
Both picture and sound were clear , and the Desire S has the option of using either of it's two cameras .
So far , so good !!

They did it at last! Video calls work great. Now we need to wait till file transfering will be enabled

Yahoo Messanger with video! Download from this thread now!!!

Ok guys, I know I have been pissed that iCrap got this first, well I downloaded the leaked MyTouch rom today for the sole purpose of grabing this...and it WORKS GREAT!!
I haven't got the video from Evo to Mac working yet(im sure i am missing something simple), but the Evo to Evo works great, better than Tango/Qik/Fring. It has video and audio at the same time(cough..Qik...cough) and works well over 3G(lowest confirmed functional 3G is -99db, of course 4G&WiFi work great) , wife and I have been playing calling each other from the next room
So if you wanted it and good 'ol Steve J. pissed you off here it is
Several people have asked about battery life and move to sd support,I can report moving to SD has had zero effect on performance, I personally have not seen an effect on battery,NO 100% AWAKE TIME(cough...Tango...cough) it has not showed up yet on "whats using the battery" in our settings->about phone->battery menu, I have made about 23 video calls now over the 2 days. Remember guys, this is a community and these are just my experiences, lets all share our experiences and help out.
Use a file explorer app, dropbox, or bluetooth folder to install to your handset and I would recommend updating your PC client to the latest version.
Oh, make sure you install both, just the add on for video and voice with the current version of messenger on the market WILL NOT WORK, and before anyone screams warez!! this IS free.
THE PEOPLE YOU ARE CALLING MUST ALSO HAVE A VIDEO OPTION ON THEIR END, you can not call your yahoo account on your phone to your account on the computer(if you are signed in on one you are signed off the other), reported issues with ATT yahoo accounts....
Confirmed Handsets:
Evo 4G
Vibrant
Moto Droid(1)
HD2(Android)
Epic 4G
Galaxy S i9000M
Captivate
Droid Incredible
MyTouch 3G Slide
G1
REPORTED ISSUES WITH SOME GALAXY S MODELS NOT DETECTING FFC
Confirmed video calls to:
iPhone 3Gs
iPhone 4
PC
PC virtual machines on Mac
Vibrant
Epic 4G
Evo 4G
No video calls to Mac OS X Yahoo Messenger yet, sorry!
So does this allow me to video chat with Yahoo from my Evo to someone's PC? That would be epic
That is the main reason I wanted it so bad, let me say first that I am using a MacBook Pro, I have not gotten the feature to work for me, but mac video apps are funny to set up, I am working on it, the reason the released it was to do both(phone to phone AND phone to computer) so it IS possible
Even so, just the better functionality of phone to phone is worth the download IMHO.
Trust me when Skype pulls their heads out of their collective ass's I will use that, but for now video Skype, as we all know, is verizon only :-(
Ok cool. Thanks for the heads up, and quick response. I installed it anyway, now I just wish I knew someone else with an Evo to test it out lol. Will be keeping my eye out for that Evo to PC news
Actually, I don't think Skype even has video on Verizon either. It was just an agreement to make the Skype voice program exclusive on Verizon phones. hxxp://phones.verizonwireless.com/skypemobile/
Awesome. Thanks. I tried it from Evo to PC and it works. I think it may have issues with the Mac. I will try that later to confirm the OP on the Mac.
Ok for the fun of it I tried Evo(yahoo) to PC(MSN messnger) and No Go.
Good deal! I dual boot to xp so I can just use that!

Awesome. Will have to watch battery . Hopefully not like tango
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
No reported battery usage after a few hours of installing and using, I will keep watching
Is anyone else having the issue I am?
When I run the video chat feature it goes to a screen where it says" Flip" or" end call" but then it goes directly back to my buddy list
Nope, that comes up when you touch the screen(instead of tapping the menu or back button), sorry, try calling some different people it has worked great so far I have made about 13 video calls

this app doesnt work on evo 4g....i think its a fake app....
How...was this ..acquired? Is it out officially?
Works great for me evo to pc. Need to have a good signal or WiFi though.

I could not get video chat to work from phone to pc. Messaging worked great though
I can't get Video chat between my EVO and my Mac to work, but it works with my virtual pc running Win 7 I think Yahoo needs to update the Mac program.

(q) video call

Anybody can help me how to make video call on my infuse?thx
Qik is only program I found that worked properly with infuse. It worked good doing a video call with an iPhone 4.
There is an app called Clearsea in the market that is free for now that works very well. We use it on IPads for video conferencing to our video conference system in the office. But I think it can also do device to device video calls as well. Just has to be a SIP or H323 compliant device for it to function properly.
when we get gingerbread we can use google talk to make video calls. skype was working on a video chat release for android and was waiting verizon to give the ok until microsoft bought it. i think we will now have to wait until skype is fully working on windows phone 7 for a few months before they even consider releasing it.
Try Tango. They just updated to work with the infuse 4g. Me personally I like tango better they use Push Notification unlike other that have a process running synchronizing every X time killing battery. With tango I could completely shut it down and still get notified.

ill have to remove my foot from my mouth as it seems the first thing microsoft did with skpe was release video chat for android. its even been hacked to work with galaxy s and galaxy s2 phones with gingerbread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1148708 prolly would work on our phones too, and is yet another reason we need gingerbread!
**** as if I didn't want gb before. Does skype work device to computer too?

yes. thats part of the point. seeing as everyone i know now has a phone with a front facing camera and a skype account, and iphones's facetime and android's google talk dont run on each others platforms, itd be really nice to have skype up and running now.

Skype mobile

Anybody else get an update for skype mobile this morning, still doesn't work was hoping it would, can't somebody remove the device check from the app like with netflix.

Also wondering if there's a working skype with video that works on cm7 (gb). Haven't found anything in the xda forums, actually there's very little mention of skype at all. Is there another video chat app that works better and has taken its place? (not that i've ever seen a working skype video yet, just thought there was one for the thunderbolt)
It works on froyo, there are others but the only one I am interested in is skype thats why I got tje phone,no idea what microsnot is doing since they got skype but it couldnt be that hard to patch it for gingerbread, dont remember what phone it was but it runs on gb just not the bolt, gotta be the device check

I know what they are doing, focosing on the wp7 version. android is their competititor, longer they make us wait the more likely some one like you who get a phone mainly for skype will actually buy a windows phone
Sounds like the gb ota update is coming soon and will likely have skype video. Otherwise I will probably go back to a froyo Rom.

[Q] Google Talk Video Chat on Slide

Im pretty new to this phone, bought it around a week ago, already got it all rooted and ready for new ROMS. The only thing that bites by butt is since this phone has the front camera, how come google talk doesnt support the video chat on this?? Is it restricted cuz of the crappy QIK Video call? Any way to enable video call on gtalk on this device?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1247430
Kinda wonky to get it going at first, but it works great. I have had calls freeze up after 10 min or so. Not sure what that is about.
The latest update from HTC now supports Google Talk Video chat on the MT4GS. It has taken much longer than it should have but the support is now there. Yeah!

I saw the note this morning that a new update was about to get pushed. I did a manual check for HTC sw update and updated my device today. I have not made a call yet, but I now get the check box for video calls.

Stock Video Call App

On the phone app, tap and hold one of the tabs. You will get to the edit mode, then drag the video Call icon to the tab list

I havent it there
Says no recipient for video call. Strange, as one of my contacts has Endymion installed on his Desire S. I'll try this evening and report.
Check with your operator first. 3G Video Call is a service provided by the operator, you cannot call this way as with skype for ex. If you both don't have the service activated (could cost you money), the call cannot be performed.
There's another topic related to this subject HERE. Maybe it's a good idea that a mod will merge them to have whole discussion in a single place
I think till now HTC doesnt support stock video call..... I sent a mail to HTC regarding this waiting for their reply.....
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
OK. I've started some "research" into this cause it seems alot of you are intereseted in this 3G Video Calling feature. I even reflash Endymion now to check few things.
1. Why some have that small camera (option) in the People tab and some don't? (When arranging tabs in People/Contacts, there's a video camera that can be added to the existing tabs.)
I think is depending on what ROM each has. If you have the stock Desire S ROM (or based on one), you will not have it... The ones that have it, are the ones that have a ported ROM from Sensation (as is Endymion ROM). Sensation has this so, since the ROM is ported from there, we have it also on the Desire S. On US site, you can check on official HTC site HERE that Sensation 4G has "Video calling enabled"
2. What do we need to use this function?
There are two things: the service from the operator AND a compatible phone. The first is easy, for the second though...there are some "problems"
Searching on the forums, I've found some official answers from HTC regarding this subject. I'll quote below one relevant:
Video Call Compatibility
AT present (April 2011) these handsets run the 2.2 (Froyo) or 2.3 (Gingerbread) versions of the Android OS and these does not natively support video calls.
In the future, if the device is updated to 2.4, it is rumoured that this will natively support video calls, but this is not known yet.
In the meantime, until video calls are natively supported, customers will need to use a third party application to utilise video calling. The people they are calling will need to also have this software installed on their handsets.
There are currently two applications which will support video calling, Fring and Tango Video Calls.
Skype have said they will be updating their software in the future to support video calling on the android platform.
This information is subject to change at any time as updates and new software is released.
Said that, it seems that we don't have yet this function even if some Samsung phones have it (Samsung Galaxy S2 for ex, you can check user manual pag. 45 for video call options)
3. What do we have to do?
For now?...sadly, nothing. HTC was not natively included this in our phones and since there are alot of third party applications that offers video call features, there is no developer willing to integrate such functionality. Maybe a port from Galaxy S2 could bring something, I'm not a developer to know if there is such port or if it is even possible.
So we have to wait for an update from HTC that hopefully will activate this on Desire S. Till then we have Tango, Skype, Fring and so on...
I hope this will clear things a little bit. If someone else has a different opinion or know a way to do this, please share it
Thanks for investigating into this! I'm Sure we will be able to get it working soon!
