[Q] UMA wifi calling on tmobile no longer working - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok guys. I have a HUGE mystery here. I have a Nexus S...i believe it was running 2.3.3 when I bought it from best buy 2 months ago.
I have no cell coverage at the building at work in so i connected my phone to the wifi network and configured the phone to make calls over wifi via the friendly wifi calling wizard (NOT VOIP CALLING). after this point, all calls, sms, and mms were routed over the wifi connection at my work.
2 weeks ago 2.3.4 was pushed to my phone. now there is no more wifi calling...and there is not a wifi calling app (not voip calling....i am talking about UMA calling).
i have called tmobile who knows nothing about it..i have called samsung and called google...all know nothing about it and keep mentioning voip calling..which is not what im talking about.
i have unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone and installed android 2.3.3 but there is no wifi uma calling.
what gives? anyone else have this crazy issue?

Huh?
Im curious how you got the UMA wifi calling on the nexus s in the first place. It was never a feature and through out the forum people were saying is next to impossible to get wifi calling on the nexus s because of its unique firmware of what not.

This does not come with stock 2.3.3 so I am curious wherebyou got this package to install it. Being someone who is working with it the RIL fails on the auth functions. If you actually found a working package this would be quite interesting to get a hold of.

[Q] Can wifi calling be ported?

I know this had been touched upon in here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=791372) but once the new G2 update is released there should be an app for wifi calling. Do you think this will be capable of porting to use with Verizon?

this would be sweet.
I agree using WiFi and Google voice I would like. In fact should I find something and verify its working on my phone i will post some links.
Sent from my Droid Incredible.
we can use skype on our phones, but thats still an extra fee, and it won't use the numbers we already have, we have to get a skype number.
you would think the cell carriers wouldn't mind wifi calling since it frees up their towers.
In the market there's an app called GV dialer. it works with Google voice (i think). You make a phone call, Google intersepts the call then calls the # dialed and your number to connect you. No minutes used, all internet. Even gives you your own # that you could receive calls on your phone. I've been using it for about 6 months now.
N1 users are interested as well. They have T-Mobile too, though. Hopefully when it gets ported over we can find a way to use it.
Here's the link over to the N1 forum on it. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=806746)
This is something that must be done.

G2x is it possible to restore Wifi calling app (kineto) from stock rom after CM7 ?

I have stock 2.2 on my G2x and want to install CM7, the only app I care about (and reason I switched to T-mobile) is wifi calling (UMA). If I adb pull /system/app/kineto.apk from the phone, install cm7, and push the apk back to the phone will it work ? Do I need to pull any libs from /system/libs/ ? I read on some thread that wifi calling after cm7 does not work, so I want to make sure before I root and mod my phone. I also downloaded the gingerbread leak version of the kineto.apk just in case the stock (2.2) one does not work... But if someone can please confirm that this process works I can root/mod this puppy PDQ.
Thanks a ton for your help.
I'm confused...is the wifi calling app even necessary? Even with the app uninstalled (or frozen), I just connect to wifi and then dial a phone number and my calls connect. So what's the purpose of this app that runs 24 hours a day?
The wifi calling (UMA) app allows you to make calls over T-mobile network by using a WIFI even if you have no signal, this is similar to the ATT femtocell calling. The app needs to be running inorder for you to make wifi only calls using T-mobile network. T-mobile supports UMA calling and no other carrier does.
CM7 comes preloaded with WiFi Calling installed. What is the issue here?
BTW, the app only turns on and activates IF turned on and WHEN wifi is enabled. If WiFi is off, so is WiFi Calling. It has been prebuilt into CM7 for over a month. It made its way into CM7 in one of the earlier builds (#13 I think).
I have the latest CM7#58 and I use WiFi Calling all the time while at work. Make sure you grab some signal before activating as it has to communicate to the cell towers to activate the app.
player911, thanks a ton I did not know that CM7 comes preloaded with wifi calling app... I will be rooting and modding my phone today! Bye Bye stock POS 2.2... Hello CM7

This is correct.
However, the little notification will ALWAYS say "Wi-fi calling uses plan minutes", at least for me. I verified with Tmo that I had free wi-fi calling on my account, and the rep said "it's a known issue, the notification is wrong, don't worry about it".

[Q] Any conclusions on WiFi calling? Do we now have better info?

I have posted to this forum information that took my a lot of googling and reading to find, regarding WiFi calling - that WiFi calling will not work on certain SIM cards, and will work on older versions.
Some did went and replaced their SIM, but not sure if they have updated their threads.
Do we now know anything new on this issue? WiFi calling is very important to me because TMobile reception in my house is week, and I loose calls a lot without it.
Currently running MIUI ROM with no WiFI calling pre-installed on this build, but used Weapon for a long time and WiFi calling did NOT work.
I will chose any ROM that has WiFi calling working.
Thanks!
Wifi Calling
I had a problem with wifi calling on my wifes mytouch 4g. I was running Virtuos Unity on it. I called t-mobile and they turned on a Wifi calling helper app on there end. Problem fixed. Calling T-mobile may fix the issue....let me know what happens

WiFi Calling on i727R

You guys may or may not know that Rogers offers a WiFi Calling service, same as T-mobile (they charge though, assholes).
Basically on the i727 ROMs, this isn't an option however if you flash a T989 ROM, you get the option but it doesn't right off the bat obviously. So I found the Rogers wifi calling apk from the Evo 3D, found here.
Now when I get the app into /system/app, it force closes and nothing else, even if I rename it to WiFiCalling.apk, replacing the original t-mo one. With the standard t-mo one, I just get a ER:05 Invalid SIM which I think this is because it is trying to connect to t-mo servers.
Any way to get this working with the i727R with a combination of things from similar devices?
The error is from the sim card tmobile uses a special sim card. There is no way to get wifi calling unless you use voip calls with third party apps. The point of tmobiles wifi calling is solely to make calls in areas with low coverage so they go through tmobiles network through wifi, even if you got it working how would you expect your calls to even work.

Rogers is using UMA now as well (like 2 years now). The SIM error I think it's coming from the fact that the rogers SIM is connecting to a t-mobile server rather than the rogers server.
The technology is the same and keep in mind I'm talking about UMA, this isn't the same as VoIP. I think the calls can work if we match up the libraries from the evo and use the right apk, he evo has the same chipset as us also.

If I remember correctly when I had t-mo the wifi calling still used your minutes. So the call was routed through their servers. There is no way you are going to get it to work without an active t-mo account.

Dude there's more companies in the world offering the same service. Such as rogers. If we get the files for Rogers then I'm very sure that we can get it working.
You are right about wifi calling using your minutes but that's nothing new, other carriers have that as well. Do you know how they route calls through their servers? Wificalling.apk from the ROM using the wifi calling feature in the ROM.

No error is solely from the wrong sim card, new t-mobile sim cards have something built into them to communicate with tmobiles network when uma calls are made. The sgs2 and amaze 4g were tmobiles first devices to have wifi calling changed in the way they route. I dont think ive ever seen a phone have wifi calling ported to it from another carrier. Since uma is tied to the network there is no way that calls would work when trying to use uma on an unsupported network. Calls will always have to go through some type of service such as skype, wifi calling, google voice etc... So you cant just make wifi calls work on a network that doesnt support it as there is no provider to service those calls.

Did you even read the OP? If Rogers didn't support it on their network, why are they selling it? Rogers doesn't support the phone (didn't install the apk and libraries on the phone), they do however support the service.
The SIM error is because the t-mobile wifi calling apk is looking for a SIM card, I'm wondering if someone can port the rogers wifi calling apk from the evo 3d to read the rogers SIM card. The libraries for wifi calling are already on the phone because of t-mobile having wifi calling. I'm not sure if they need to be modified or not but I know there's someone here that would know that. That person just has to run across this thread :/
First of all, T-Mobile doesn't charge for Wi-Fi Calling. Get your facts straight.
Second of all, you will never be able to "modify" another carrier's Wi-Fi calling and expect it to work on AT&T. It doesn't work that way. AT&T must support it.

Most people are assuming you want this to work on at&t, the op doesnt specify. That would obviously never work, it seems like you want it to work on rogers. Its more complicated then what your making it seems when the t989 released it didnt have wifi calling and it wasnt ported over so easily because for tmobile at least it works differently then past devices thats why the sim error is important, its looking for a tmobile sim card and specifically the newer tmobile sim cards even the older ones get that error. That being said it might work differently for rogers but if its the same porting it over wont be that easy as installing the apk and lib files. There are more components then that to tmobiles wifi calling so you may want to ask in the evo forums for all the components to make wifi calling work on the evo.

Thanks, probably the most helpful direction yet. Although I would like to point out that I wanna get it working for i727R, not i727... If I went through the bother of putting the extra R in there, I would expect people to notice it. The i727R is Rogers. I wanna get this working on Rogers, the post describes Rogers as offering the service and the entire time I only mention Rogers rather than AT&T, I don't see how most people would assume I wanna get this working on AT&T.
Unless most people don't actually read or like to post just to get their post count up regardless of how useless the post was.
I'll start checking out the EVO forums to find out how this thing works a bit more in detail tonight.

I had it worked out on older ROM on my HTC sensation, you can chek out my post at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359107
the files that makes it work are coming from kineto package (one company that makes it works for all providers).
this is why all apk(s) for WiFi calling look the same but the one for T-mobile wont work for Rogers (invalid SIM error message, or force close)
Unfortunately as I've upgraded to ICS the older lib libhtc_ril.so is no longer working, so if you have access to EVO from Rogers with latest ROm we could make it work again

WiFi calling on Verizon?

Anyone know IF WiFi calling can be enabled on the Verizon network? I know it's enabled through my carrier (coming from Pixel 3 XL)
I am very interested in this as well. Have zero cell coverage at my job, but amazing wifi coverage.
That and a way to do wifi texting, but I think I may have to dig around for that one.

i think WiFi texting is tied to WiFi calling they really handicapped the device on Verizon's network. All it can do is essentially make and receive calls...
I know the T-Mobile version can on T-Mobile, but it's there anything that keeps the unlocked version from doing it on T-Mobile? I may switch if that's the case.
I love this phone so much I may have to switch to T-Mobile.

I did figure out a way to 'make' the option appear using a newer verizon of the Oneplus Logkit apk...(dial *#800#, pick Oneplus Logkit>Function Switch> VoWifi Switch). But after enabling it, it doesn't seem to work yet, and it somehow seems to break MMS if it's on. Not sure if they are actually working on it or not, but I wish someone could see if they could get it working. I think I got the APK from here, but I can't remember from where, so whoever you are, I'm sorry for not crediting you. If someone wants to mess around with it...by all means.

Install the Verizon Messages (Message+) and you should be able to do wifi texting. I tried the log kit as well and it doesn't seem like VOWifi is working but it is hard to tell. I can make Wifi calls using Google Voice and that number but only if not in Airplane mode. Seems to be a bug as it says to turn off airplane. Voice then proceeds to make a wifi call. Maybe the same effect with regular VOWifi where it would use wifi if there is no cell signal.

I actually switched to t-mobile, and voice over wifi, wifi texting and all that showed up and work great. Message+ does not allow wifi texting on Verizon on this phone, tier 2 support said development phones (that's what the OP7 is certified under) are not eligible to use advanced features on the network, including, voice over wifi, video calling and text over wifi using Verizon messages.
I got text over WiFi to work with Verizon messages + and use Google Hangouts over WiFi for the calls. Decent enough work around.
