[Q] Flashing roms?! - Milestone XT720 General

Can anyone tell me can I install roms meant for milestone or droid on my phone xt720 using open recovery??
Any major risk......?
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App

The major risk is that it won't work. It's not for our phone, so don't flash it.

Don't do it.

Milestone ROMs have to be ported to work on XT720. That's what Dexter did for us--he combined the leaked Milestone 2.2 with some parts of the Motoroi 2.2 to create a 2.2 port for XT720. The Milestone, Droid and XT720 are based on the same basic platform (sholes) but they are not identical--for example, we don't have a keyboard. Some parts can just be copied and some parts have to be modified (but which parts and how is a question better answered by someone at Dexter's skill level).

spec wise, XT720 would be better than A853 (original Milestone with physical keyboard)
Motorola locked the bootloader of Milestone preventing the users not to install custom ROMs but users come up with many other ways to do it. So, Moto had learned their lessons, and did a better job to XT720, (and also to Milestone 2 and DroidX) to lock down the bootloader again.
it's harder to do it in XT720 than A853, but u know, they can't stop ppl fighting for freedom (just have a look to Egypt). We've come up with not one but two custom ROMs with the great help from Dexter. One version with stock Froyo features and another with Froyo + Motoblur features. (and one great spin-off version by kalpowers)
And as time goes on, I hope there will be more ROM versions.
Thank you so much spiders_mm ...
you said the right things but when i open the milestone portal , always feeling sad bcuz it has a maney ROM versions ...
I hope that to be more ROM versions
well frankly until recently we didnt even have our own sub forum. xt720 customization is at its infancy now. so sit tight and be patient XD

Would there be an android 2.3 rom for xt720?

Sorry for being silly, could anyone tell me whether there will be any android 2.3 rom for xt720 someday later and why? Still,i am happy using my xt720 with dexter's froyo and trying out roms from different developers, thank you for all your efforts

Guess that its pretty unplausible. There would have to be some xt720 2.3 rom from which could be copied.since there isnt its sadly pretty unprobable

I think it's more that none of the active XT720 developers have the time or knowledge to do it yet. The Milestone 1 has 2.3-based ROMs without an official 2.3 release, but they are all built from source. I don't think anyone has a working 2.1 or 2.2 ROM built from source yet for the XT720 (although stlifey is very close to a fully working source build of CM6 for the XT701 so keep an eye on him). Once someone figures source builds for XT720 out, progress will be much quicker.

So 2.3 and beyond is technically feasible even with the locked bootloader - we just need our devs to have more experience?

Keep in mind that even though we are using froyo right now, the kernel is still an "eclair" kernel. We need one of two things, either Motorola unlocks the bootloader, or we find a newer kernel that will work with our ROMs. Neither are very likely at this point.

Well, we don't know what the hardware requirements for beyond 2.3 will be, but otherwise I would agree. I see no reason that a 2.3 port using source would be impossible, esp. since Milestone A853 which has very similar hardware has done it already. Milestone A853 has exactly the same locked bootloader situation and uses 2nd-init. At this point the only things we can't replace are the kernel* and the partition tables. There are a few of us working on it and there are others (esp. in asian dev forums). I may not be the first--it's still beyond my skill set at the moment but I'm learning a lot from stlifey's XT701 and nadlabak's A853 ports.
*technically we can use our own kernels, but it's impractical (requires manual boot while plugged into a computer via USB)

I'm pretty optimistic the kernel can be worked around, but you're right. There's no guarantees that the kernel we have has all of the features that might be required in the future. But I think the CM7 for Milestone runs using either the eclair or froyo kernels (with the eclair kernel considered the most stable the last time I checked).

right...moto ruin everything ...and i don't care about 2.3 that much as long as moto unlocked bootloader so the devlopers can make us newer kernel support swap before it's too late.....damn moto

The CM7 on MOTO XT720

I heard that this forum is a master transplant CM7 ROM, I would like to ask about the current progress
What is difficult to solve the problem?
Can provide the current ROM, I would like to try
Want to provide,
Thank you
I want to start by saying THANK YOU FOR MIUI!!!! You are awesome. And they have got cm7 booting up on xt720 but only if you flash motoroi 2.2.1. But the touch screen is not working. If I were you I'd get with Mioze7Ae. He's the Guy to talk to about it. There is a thread with the ROM download in it in the general thread.

stlifey made a port of CM7 to XT701. That is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1064090
If download links are dead there, let me know and I can mirror/reupload.
I think this is the main development page for the XT701 CM7, but the forum seems to be down for maintenance right now:
http://bbs.gfan.com/android-1297281-1-1.html
It doesn't work on XT720 yet. This is where things stand:
Using Milestone XT720 2.1 sbf
If you use a Milestone XT720 sbf, then it doesn't boot. I've been modifying it and have gotten it to go further with adb logcat working to get some messages out. This is the latest version I've been testing that makes it the furthest before rebooting:
http://www.multiupload.com/ULWN2ERP02
The radio panics and panic_daemon shuts down the phone. If you modify the init scripts, you can disable panic_daemon. Then it will boot to the point that zygote tries to start but has a library link problems so I've changed too many libraries .
From Korean Motoroi XT720 2.2 sbf
sktjdgns1189 figured out that if you flash the Korean Motoroi 2.2 sbf, root, install OpenRecovery, and apply the XT701 update without any modifications it boots up, but the digitizer doesn't work. You can do some things like long press the camera button to get the camera to come up and you can take pictures. See
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118236
Eventually it will crash and reboot. The bad news is that for some reason after you flash the the Motoroi sbf on Milestone XT720, you can't use volume-up to enter OpenRecovery. So you have to use adb ("reboot openrecovery") to get back into OpenRecovery. But I haven't been able to get adb to startup. So that means you're back to sbf for the next try. I can't figure out why the touch screen doesn't work.
sktjdgns1189 has also figured out how to get the battery notification working:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124927
Edit: Forgot to mention that we're now pretty sure that sktjdgns1189 has a Motoroi XT720 based on his photos. I've reproduced most of his results on a Milestone XT720.

Off topic: Does anyone know what all the "ah"s that Google Translate adds means? I think wiktionary suggests "啊" == surprised+"!"? Also, does anyone know a good place to look up those four-character idioms? There's one about hunters that comes up a lot. Just curious.
lols. ah is like "oh". for idioms maybe you can copy to google then add "english meaning"

I see! The google translated posts just seem a little strange because I guess "ah" and "oh" would come at the front of the expression in English. It can seem like reading threads where everyone is talking about Candlejack and then sudde
Haha, just post here if you need any translations awaiting patiently for CM7 Gingerbread XDXD
i can help a little with the translations too, haha. SOOOOO EXCITED FOR GINGERBREAD. i like the stock look of cm7 and of course the turning off crt animation of 2.3. CANT WAIT!
do you think we can get 2.3 miui running on our phone?

Yeah, gingerbread is much more attractive than 2.2 and below all around. Plus it's supposed to be faster (and CM is supposed to be even faster) and have other goodies... would be so fantastic to see this for the XT720.
if you want to use adb
just use 2nd-init (default.prop : ro.secure=0, ro.debuggable=1, persist.service.adb.enable=1, persist.factory.allow_adb=1)
(and some code in init.mapphone_umts.rc (it for adb on bootup))
then you can use logcat/dmesg and etc even on bootup
wait and sad
CM7 would be a dream come true.
Best of luck guys, I will be watching
Wish I would know how to contribute to this happening... would make me feel better knowing I was making some progress. Well, hope this goal is attainable.

No, Dexter posted that in his XT720 thread. I saw that the other day and was considering mentioning it, but I'm sure Mio and others are doing everything already.
Here's the post Dexter is responding to:
"From my understanding of the situation, Cyanogen is out of the question, for now. Dexter's roms are modifications of the official MOTOROI XT720 2.2 (KR) for our handsets. Due to the bootloader lock placed on the phone by Motorola, we can't compile our own systems based on the android sources.
Anybody correct me if I'm wrong with my situation assessment. "

Though if Dexter feels it's so simple I wish he would elaborate for the benefit of our devs, just in case he knows something they don't.

Thank you, everyone.
Thanks for doing this!
Has anyone here tried this out yet?
EDIT:
Tried One-click optimization. Got my first bootloop ever - woot. To be fair I didn't read the manual and all extra stuff, I just clicked okay for all the menus so I don't know if there was something I was supposed to do that I didn't (I just flashed MIUI the other day so I didn't really have any data I was worried about losing).
Anyways.

Check out the following build.prop file
ro.build.id = MIUI
ro.build.version.release = 2.2.1
ro.product.model = XT720 or ro.product.model = Milestone XT720
If the above settings are the same, bootloop because the cause of the CPU overclock.
One-Click Optimizer overclocking selection in the dialog that is displayed when applicable "Do not apply (Later)" Please proceed to select.
After reboot, "CPU Policy Change" using the menu may be applied to change to overclock.

ICS4.0, WebOS, Aliyun OS, Ubuntu, etc vs. Moto Locked Bootloader?

is it safe to say we wont be able to load any other OS but Froyo on the XT720 unless we get the Boot Loader unlocked?
as i recall the only reason we got CM6 and CM7 to work is because we are still piggybacking off from the old eclair 2.1 kernel or something like that.
will that still work if we move on to ICS 4.0, or if we try to completely load another OS?
Ubuntu is well know to run on many android devices, and now Ubuntu is even planning to officially support and release a phone version of their own OS, as well as other new OS sources like WebOS and Aliyun available for development; it'll be an awful waste to be locked only to 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3
I believe we will get 4.0 but the how it will work on are phones is likely to be a ram hog.
I don't see the milestone xt720 getting its bootloader unlocked.
The milestone xt is abandoned by moto and Google will not unlock it.
Sent from my XT720 using xda premium
I just hate Motorola for doing that...it has absolutely no sense at all.
Greetings
other than the low amount of RAM the XT720 is not really behind the times
with good software as we see running CM6 this phone is amazing and quick
it's one of the few devices that had a 8 MP camera before it became standard (2~3 years later ) on all other android phones
if we could add more RAM and unlock the boot loader this phone could go a looooong way
Also the xenon is very, very cool I think. We just need this bootloader thing...does someone know why they dont open it?
Idk more and more devices are running ICS now. One of them happens to be the Droid Eris. So I'm sure with all these awesome devs someone can come up with something. But I do think the kernel might be where are problems are gonna lie. Cause all the devices I've seen running ICS are with kernels for froyo and up and all of them had to be patched to work with ICS. We can always remove the RAM hog apps to free up some RAM if it ever gets running. I might just blow the dust off my xt720 and start tinkering with it. And I actually read somewhere you can actually bypass the signature check on milestone by desoldering a pin on the board. I'll have to find that article again tho.

also i success to connect network by wifi
it has enough ram (about 140Mb) and touch screen work
but i can't run X window (i hasn't any driver )
I will try to see if theirs a way to get this bootloader unlocked.
Is it possiable to include hotboot in are open recovery so we can flash a kernel and hotboot it by the signature check.

My understanding of the Hot/Quick reboot apps is that reboot the Android GUI without rebooting the kernel.

that's a good idea, it might work
we can get a work around by first booting into a stock signed vanilla ROM in the command line, and then hot reboot it by calling the version of the OS we want to run.
very similar to the way how HP used android as based to call & launch WebOS
The boot process is:
bootloader -> kernel -> init -> android
The "bootloader -> kernel -> init" segment is locked and unmodifyable (except fastboot via USB). There is a weakness in the init->android transition because the system partition is not signature checked. 2nd-init is what we use to "undo" the stock init and boot custom ROMs. It goes something like this:
bootloader -> kernel -> init -> hijack/2nd-init -> (tampered)init -> (modified)android
Hot reboot really just restarts the GUI something like this:
bootloader -> kernel -> init -> android -> hot-reboot -> (restarted)android
The only thing hot reboot might solve is cleaning up after memory leaks (if there are any) because hijack/2nd-init is already as early as possible. The closer analogy on a PC would be that hot-reboot is something like logging out and then logging back in again. It's not really a "reboot" per se. Or another analogy is that its similar to closing and reopening firefox when it's getting laggy.
So will take it that fastboot can only done by usb can't be added to are recovery.
If you have 701boooaders send link I would like to try them on this modsbf.
Thanks.

Not sure if this is helpful, and I see the other thread that shows XDA has an issue with Galnet Miui, but they show a stable release for the Milestone.
If we assume this is the Droid, not the Xt720 - the Droid is an inferior device to this, I also see that the Droid got a 2.2 froyo from Moto, and this did not.. is this pure numbers of sales? did the xt720 just not sell enough to be worth their bother?
But does looking into the Galnet rom help us develope one for the xt720 any faster??
James
Yes, I'm pretty sure it's numbers otherwise we would have gotten 2.2. At least thats what I believe based on comments left in the kernel code. Milestone XT720 was apparently developed for T-Mobile, but in the end, T-Mobile ended up not picking it up so Motorola sold it where it could.
