Has anyone been able to successfully replace the stock messaging app with gosms and still receive pictures?
Currently I can send them but not receive them. I've been searching high and low searching for every setting I could think of including apn stuff.
I get it wit chomp sms

So you were able to remove the stock SMS app completely and use Chomp as a replacement to send and receive pictures?

My evo is rooted and with the app Root Explorer I can go and and delete any app on my phone. Since I have Handcent can I delete the stock messaging app and not have any issues? Or does Handcent rely on the stock app to function correctly?
Sorry if this has been asked but searching here turned up nothing

Handcent as well as any other 3rd party messaging app relies on the stock messaging app to function correctly. If you remove the stock app you won't get any messages anymore.

I know HTC made some heavy modifications, but if they didn't block the SmsManager.class in android.telephony then Handcent should work fine without the stock messaging app.
I've removed the sms app from my Droid once HandCent was installed and it works beautifully.
Can't hurt to try, copy the files somewhere safe, though, just in case.

I suggest you double check your method of testing, without the stock messaging app, Handcent can not send or receive MMS. It'll do SMS just fine, but no picture, video or audio.
To the OP, if you don't use MMS, then by all means go ahead an uninstall the stock messaging app; but if you still want the ability to send and receive any type of multimedia messages, then leave it be.

Dang I use MMS SO guess I cant. Thanks everyone
Thanks guys, I needed this answer as I thought things were working well with the stock messaging app deleted..that was until I couldn't download mms. Everything running smoothly again.
Handcent does have the capability to send and receive sms and mms. I had partly helped test a few builds during a trouble shooting. But it isn't 100% it seems to work at first then stop. There is an option for it much like gosms in the settings. Btw, I have the stock app frozen and I get sms/mms just fine

Every time I have ever deleted the stock mms.apk then moms stops working on Handcent. But every phone is a little different. Back up the apk and remove it and if it gives ya trouble restore the backup.
I've never had a problem sending/receiving MMS with Handcent as my main/deleting MMS.apk. This is over a few different phones--Droid 1, EVO 4G, LG G2X, and my current SGSII (Tmo)
rather then delete just freeze. I use gosms and it's equipped with an option to be used if stock app is disabled or removed. I set that then freeze the stock app. works fine for me

Ok guys, I can't find a thread on this so here's my situation. I have a nookColor, I'm currently running Froyo on it and I would like to be able to have my Google Voice text messages get stored like normal texts so I can use something like Handcent or GoSMS to send and recieve messages through my GV number. If anyone knows of a way to do this or could point me at some files to poke through I'd be much appreciative
I don't think this is possible, but if it was, it'd be very convenient for me to have as well.

I'm using the GV SMS Extension app from the Play store, and I've used it on CM9 Nightlies and it worked fine, integrating with both GoSMS Pro as well as the native messaging app. However, upon flashing SkyICS 4.2F6 (base 2 update 1.8) the integration no longer works on either GoSMS or the native messaging app. I can send messages which work fine, but messages recieved are not put through to the apps; rather, I can only read them from the Google Voice app itself (which is slow as balls). Any ideas?
If you go into the google voice app and hit settings, than go to Sync & Notifications, than Receive Test messages (here you can select Google Voice or Messaging app)
That should make all your texts show up in GOSMS
Yeah I know that, but what that does is forward the GV texts as real texts. I don't have a texting plan so that defeats the purpose of using he GV SMS extension.

Thanks, its installed, no rooting required. Looking forward to giving it a good work out tomorrow.
On VZW, SMS works, MMS does not. This app is pulled from an N5, running 4.4 without a messaging app so it will have issues.

MMS does not work on the Nexus 5 Hangouts when on Wifi.
Weird. I have a Sprint Moto X. Installed the new Hangouts and I can send/receive SMS & MMS. Even on WiFi it works great. Notifications work and everything. I uninstalled the original stock messaging app too using Titanium Backup. Maybe that's why since it's intended to be the stock SMS/MMS app in 4.4???
Does anyone have an idea as to why i'm not receiving notifications in hangouts for new sms? This was with both the sideloaded update to hangouts and then from the market as well.
Has anyone gotten group messaging with iPhone users to work correctly on the stock hangouts application? I can send group messages but do not receive any responses. No individual messages and nothing in the group window. I also tried textra and had the same results.
Suggestions?
Gotta be your apn settings. Mine works great on hangouts app

Do you guys in the U.S get free MMS?
The fact that Hangouts sends Group Messages as MMS makes it an expensive proposition here in the U.K?
in the US, every text plan i've had makes no distinction between SMS or MMS, plus i can't remember the last time i encountered anyone with a limited amount of SMS/MMS per month anymore...
