[Q] Field Utils app, whats it for? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Noob question, what's the field utils app for? Just noticed it after the 3.1 update I got a few hours ago. Didn't notice it before. Looks like a system app, but what's it for? I searched but nothing came up.

You get the app by booting up holding the volume up and down and power at the same time. At the dual-core screen. It says cold booting linux OEM fuse check. Once it boots you'll find the field utils in your app tray. Reboot normally and its gone.
Open the app and you have three options, program menu, field test screen and radio info.

HELP: Touchpad/screen doesn't respond, can't enter bootmode/security code or PIN code

First of, I have a problem getting into the bootloader as I've said in my post: forum . xda-developers . com / showthread.php?t=759279
I've been using Kostas244's ROM -> www . forum . xda-developers . com / showthread.php?t=554071 for a few months now, no problems until now.
What happened: The touchscreen began to not respond to my input, slowly and gradually for a few days. I clicked on a few things, something else was triggered. So I figured I only had to reboot the phone. Now I can't get even use my phone.
My phone activies: Calls, SMS, Alarm, Play Solitaire, Taking Photos. That's about it. Nothing else.
Now I can't seem to enter the bootloader (Camera Hold + Power) during startup, can't get into the system cause the slider reacts just once and then it hungs up. Freezes for a while, then after I shut down the screen and turn it on again it simply does not respond at all.
First time I could enter my security code, but then I couldn't enter my PIN code so I took out my SIM CARD - then I couldn't enter my security code and nothing seems to be working.
Right now my phone ask me to enter a code due to "several bad atempts to get into the phone" and I could only press q (whatever I would input, it simply gave me a q and then nothing) and that doesn't do me any good.
Just a few minutes ago I tried forum . xda-developers . com / showthread.php?t=636170&highlight=bricked+my+cruise&page=2 on the thread ( forum xda-developers com / showthread.php?t=636170&highlight=bricked+my+cruise&page=2 ) who seemed to have a similiar problem as mine - the touchscreen isn't working.
But I don't have Windows XP (if that's the case it's not working) and the guides seems to point that it has to be in RGB mode (bootloader) and that is not working either.
Does anyone have any ideas or solutions I could try? This just happened out of the blue, I hadn't done anything with the phone for a whole day and it just began acting like this. No damage to the phone has been made or anything out of the ordinary. So it sounds like a software problem, but I can't seem to get past it.
I use Linux 64 and Windows 7 64 if there's solution to connect to the device on either Operating Systems.
Thanks anyway.
To enter the bootloader screen press the camera button an the reset button at the bottom of your phone 'the little hole next to the usb'.
You could try hard reset press and hold both bottom buttons and reset 'you will lose your contacts sms ect' so back up using pimbackup.
If your digitizer is not working 'doesn't respond to touch' try sync your phone and install mymobiler/,then you can browse you phone and backup to sd card before hard reset.
Already tried that, as I included in my previous post about getting access to the bootloader. I can't get into the bootloader with Camera Hold + Reset. Nothing happens, it's as if the buttons don't respond correctly.
Hold down both "bottom buttons"? You mean GPS and IE buttons? Tried that too. Tried a few others. And I'm certain this worked before. Like I said in my post, nothing has happened to the phone recently - it just started acting this way. So I'm guessing it's more a software problem than a hardware problem. Since I have HARD SPL and a homecooked OS the chances of it being that is a probability.
I have nothing that needs to be backed up, so I don't need to do anything about that.
Hi
I have same problem. Screen doesn't react (only if press hard), and i can't enter bootloader and make HR.
Also, I had same problem 2 month ago. But I managed to revive it - made a lot of try of HR and one of them was successful. but now it is dead again and I don't know what to do...

[Q] Recovery not working after upgrading to 4.0.3

I upgraded my Nexus S i9023 to ICS 4.0.3. Phone is not rooted or anything. I just followed to procedure given in this post. It works good for most stuff, but some apps seem to not work any more.
The problem is that I can now not enter recovery mode any more. When I power up phone and hold "volume up" button, I get bootloader screen. When I select "Recovery" from this screen, I get short image of android lying on back, with chest open. This image disappears after short time, and phone hangs.
Please help. How can I restore standard 2.3.6 without having to root phone phone or do other "non standard" stuff? I have spent a couple of hours searching this forum, and found many people reporting this problem, but no solution I (super NOOOB) can follow. Seems like all solutions are for "experienced hackers".
Cheers, David
simple solution: use flashlight
Hello, thanks for hint. I tried couple of different tourches before found one that I can sort of read displays. Shine light from bottom of phone, and displays is nearly readable.
- After display goes blank, shining light on displays shows android guy with warning triangle. Hold the power button and tap volume up. You'll see a menu with 4 items. Could not read text, but figured first item is "Reboot", and second "Apply update from /sdcard". I selected second item.
- Now with volume can scroll up and down through many items. Seems to be folders on sdcard. I placed only one file in root of sdcard = "2.3.3(GRI40)_to_2.3.6.zip". Problem is I could not find "4.0.3_to_2.3.6.zip". So tried what I have.
- As expected it failed. I am now trying to find a "4.0.3" to "2.3.6" incremental update. Will report if found.
Lying on his back with his chest open? It sounds like he has just had his heart plucked out in an Aztec Ceremony, or he is being prepared for Open Heart Surgery. Seriously, I've never seen that image.
There is no way to downgrade with stock recovery....
Sent from my ice cream powered Nexus S
try download the clockworkmod's recovery image and use fastboot:
fastboot boot (recovery's filename)
to boot into clockworkmod's recovery

[Q] Pandigital 8'' Supernova: Force close loop fix, activationg "Safe mode"

Activating "Safe mode" If stuck in a force close loop on a Pandigital product:
Power down the device
Press and hold the menu key
While still holding the menu key, press the power button to restart the device
When at the lock screen (probably sooner) you can release the menu key
You should see "Safe mode" in the lower left corner of the screen.
Uninstall the offending application
Had a friend throw their Pandigital 8'' Supernova on me after trying to install gapps on it. It ended up causing a force close loop at startup making it impossible to access settings or any other app. It seems recovery mode is blocked for the most part. It is possible to boot into recovery but there are no options available to select so I could not simply restore the device. I found a few posts about safe mode for other android products and a variety of ways to activate it depending on manufacturer and had success after trying it on this one. This is pretty basic for xda and the development comunity but trying to find info for a Pandigital device proved pointless. Most posts ask how to do this but none are ever answered and Pandigital does not respond to support requests. Hoping this gets indexed by google and helps some other folks out there.

When buttons (and volume knob) stop working

All the buttons, including the volume knob stop working.
It has happened several times on my android 5.1.1/mtcd/joying unit.
When it happens the boot process is strange. It spends a while displaying the car logo, then it displays the desktop for a second or so and then it displays the car logo again. It sort of looks like it boots twice.
Wiping the dalvik cache does not fix the problem. I have to factory reset or wipe everything from recovery to get the buttons working again.
I am currently using malaysk rom for MTCD units but I had exactly the same issue on the stock rom.
I think the problem is related to autostarting apps on reboot.
Today it happened after I installed the Sygic speed camera/traffic alert app. Everything worked fine for a while, until I chose to auto start it (from the settings menu inside the Sygic app), rebooted, and the buttons no longer worked.
To check if the autostart option really caused the problem I installed the app again, chose to auto start from the settings inside the app, and the same thing happened. Buttons no longer worked.
The issue is not specific to Sygic, as I have had the same issue with other apps.
Now I use tasker to autostart the app. It has survived a few reboots. I hope it lasts.
Does anyone understand the boot process on these units well enough to help debug it further?
It would be nice if I could fix it the next time it happens, instead of having to wipe/reinstall everything.
It seemed to be completely random for me... and it stopped happening as randomly as it started.
I posted the process I went through to get them back (reboot, reboot to recovery, reboot again, etc) but very intermittent.
I experience this whenever I reboot from the power icon in the taskbar. It seems to have started after upgrading to Malaysk's version 4. I have verified this on two Joying units. My workaround is to reboot with the reset button when I have to.
I have not had any apps autostart since the last time it happened, but the buttons stopped working again a few days later, and the "double boot" came back also. The reset button did not help.
A factory reset from the settings menu made the buttons work again.
I was using the latest joying rom and MCU. Spotify, iGo navigation (from joying) and the TomTom speed camera app were the only "extras" installed if I remember correctly.
I am about to give up on the (JY-UL135) head unit now. Unless someone has suggestions on what to do.

xdamember2, i think you are right. Power icon in the task bar is the root of evil.
Today i've had the same experience. But with the buttons, the sound had also disappeared. Pushing hardware reset button had fixed the problem.
So I suggest to remove power icon from the task bar.
This happened to me yesterday, but as well as buttons/steering wheel control, all sound output stopped working! No radio, music or navigation sounds. Tried a reboot, but in the end only a factory reset did the trick as specified previously.
Very frustrating!
This happened to me again today for the second time. While driving the screen turned to white/black static like moving artifacts and the sound cut off. After holding the power button to reset the buttons are not working. I'll update to Malaysk's Rom v5 now but looks like my apps are wiped again...
i've been on v5 for the past few days and i haven't witnessed this behavior.
Any luck with the buttons and sound stop working? It`s the same with version 6 of this ROM which i like way better then the stock ROM. I`v noticed that any other reboot except the standard one, when the HU shuts off by it self, will make buttons unusable and no sound. The first time it happen to me was when i did some changes in the "factory settings" menu that needed to reboot the device. The only way i managed to fix it was to do a factory reset. Tomorrow will try to flash the same ROM (V6) without wiping to see if this will fix it,because they don`t work again now after rebooting from the power icon . Lets hope someone finds solution for this annoying issue.
MY FIX for Volume knob not working on Android Head Unit
Hi All
I updated my generic Ford Focus PX5 android head unit, and after much swearing and reading on here, I still was unable to fix the top left volume and top right tuning rotary knobs as they had stopped responding.
Eventually i started mucking about with Factory Settings and in the "OTHER" section I looked at "Knob Mode"
Experimenting with the various settings I eventually determined that for me, "2 10K/20K ADC Ports" works. I now have fully functioning controls.
I hope this is of some help to you guys!
I had been fooling with the settings of my Android head unit and some days later realized my volume knob wasn't working. That knob was a big factor in my purchase of this unit. After fooling with a dozen or more logical sounding settings, I happened upon the setting which had to do with 'Key lights'. Here's the fix:
From 'Settings' go to 'Factory Settings' and enter code 8888. Go to 'Key Light Settings'. On 'please open the debug button lamps' press 'OK", slide the screen up and turn off 'whether to turn on the colorful lights'. Back on out and the volume should now be working. Hope this helps

I recently bought a new android head unit. All are working well except the original volume knob of the car. Sometimes i must turn it 4-5 clicks for the volume to move 1 click, and other times i may turn it 10-15 clicks and the volume does not respond at all. This is very frustrating! I found a solution on youtube which says factory settings-other- and uncheck the wheel3 option, but my head unit doesn't have this option at all. I hope your solution will help me!
Update : I searched for this solution you mentioned but this option does not exist in my factory settings with 8888 code. Only car logo. I dont know what to do....

Diagnostics & Scans.

Is there anyway to run a diagnostics scan for my Pure XL? I'm also wondering if there is a malware scan i can download to use. My phone has been a little glitchy and i'm trying to figure out whats wrong. Any sort of help would be appreciated.

If you could define what "a little glitchy" means, it might be easier to narrow down what the problem is.
But anyways...
To scan your phone for malware, download a well-known antivirus/anti-malware app from the Google Play Store (Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, etc.). The Pure XL also comes with McAfee pre-installed into the system, if you want to bother using that. I'd also recommend uninstalling any apps you sideloaded onto your phone (.apk files downloaded from somewhere on the internet which you installed on your phone), as it's the easiest way to get infected.
If you want to test your Pure XL's hardware and stuff, first shut down your phone, then power it up while holding the Volume Down button until you feel the short vibration and the white BLU screen appear. After you enter the factory test mode, use the Volume Down button to navigate down, Power button to enter a submenu/item, and the Volume Up button to navigate back a submenu.

Ya, whenever I exit out of certain apps, The phone will start to vibrate constantly. Even after I've shut down the apps and have done a full restart.
