Mic stops working - ONLY during calls? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Bought a NS4G last weekend and am having a weird problem.
ONLY during calls, my mic seems to stop working. I can use voice search and voice nav no problem. Can pull the phone far away from my face and it hears me just fine. But if I'm on a call I practically have to shout into the mic. Tried to leave myself a voicemail on my work number and it didn't even register that I was talking.
Also just tried using a db meter app and the mic works perfectly with that.
I recently installed Netarchy kernel and Voodoo control.
Could there be a setting that is screwing with my mic during calls?
EDIT: I think I've narrowed it down to Voodoo Control :/
Uninstalled app, rebooted and now people can hear me fine.

same thang
had this same problem. Not sure when it started, had the phone for a little over a week, running latest Netarchy (pre-5-15-11 build) and Voodoo controls. After I had 4 people comment on not being able to hear me, I checked for myself and sure enough, I was barely audible on the other end of a call. Tried factory ROM/kernel, no luck. Wiped the phone completely, ROOT included and still had the problem. Returned the phone to Best Buy new one sounds great. Haven't rooted yet. Both phones running GRJ22 (Latest Google update). Both phones seem to have the radio/wifi level flucuations many others are commenting on. Wifi Speedtest half the speed of iphone on same network 10M vs 18M down and 4M vs 18M up.

Same issue here. I restored my phone to stock in order to bring it back to Sprint but when I tried it after restore others could hear me fine. I am restoring my nandroid backup in hopes that I can disable voodoo sound and have it work like OP.
Found out that it's not Voodoo Sound in itself, it's the Hi-fi record option. Turn it off and in-call mic levels return to normal.

[Q] Cannot hear other party on phone app

After many months of normal usage on the HTC Inspire with an AT&T sim card, this problem has occurred:
When using the regular phone app, while either placing or receiving a call, the other party hears me fine, but no sound comes out of the regular speaker at the top area on the phone. However, normal 2-way audio works fine if I plug in a headset. Also, sound is heard from the speaker after I change to speakerphone mode, but this is not the way that I wish to normally use the phone. Changing any and all of the volume settings makes no difference, including "In call" volume. Strangely, I can still hear the phone ring for incoming calls, but I cannot hear the ringing on the line after I dial a proper number. A few more details:
-Restarts, long off-periods, battery removals, recovery screen restarts, all haven't fixed the problem
-Doing factory reset doesn't fix, including reinstalling Gingerbread update
-Speaker sound is normal for all other apps (any media app, audio notifications, etc.)
-However, if I install any data telephone-type apps, such as SipDroid (for a Sip number) or Groove IP (for Google Voice number), these apps encounter the exact same speaker problem as the stock phone app.
-If this relates to a hardware problem, it's odd that it worked normally for many months, and the phone didn't encounter a fall or water damage, not to mention that the speaker seems to physically work properly for all other apps except phone apps.
Any clues to solve this problem are appreciated.

You do know that it uses a different speaker when on speaker phone and for other apps right? It sounds like the speaker used for phone calls maybe loose or dead.
So if that's the case, I guess getting it fixed is not really a viable option. Seems like such a repair would cost more than a phone replacement. Would you agree?

Well that depends. You could most likely do it yourself for pretty cheap. That is what I would do as it is not really that hard with the time and research. I would call around to repair places and see what they will charge you.
Well you can look into the inspire tinny audio fix but its for cm roms. But there is a modify version of it for sense roms. I had some what of the same issue..

I probably had tried the Tinny Audio Fix before, but to be sure, I loaded it again within CM7. Still not fixed.
I've had to accept the fact that the front speaker is broken and needs to be repaired or replaced, so that's what I'll do. I guess that all hardware breaks eventually. Thanks!

Sounds like the phone may be stuck in headphone mode. Try plugging in headphones and pulling them out a few times and see if that corrects it. My cousin had that issue on a different phone. Lots of dirt and pocket fuzz gumming up the headphone jack.

[Q] handset microphone doesn't work well, speaker mic works fine?

This seemed to only recently have come up.. but the handset microphone does not pick up sound nearly as well. It is maybe 1/10th the amplitutde. I've tested phone calls to myself (to GVoice headphones, other phones, etc.) and the speaker mic works great. When you take it off speaker mode it barely picks up sound at all.
When I use Evernote voice note recorder or a simply voice recorder I get similar results of extremely attenuated sound.
I do not _believe it is a CM10/custom ROM issue as this new behavior seems to have only started recently (past 2 days?) and was running the same stable ROM the whole time. I haven't yet isolated, but it could be a bluetooth problem (doubtful) - as I recently paired with two devices sometime in the past 3 days, or maybe some App has taken control over the amplification of the handset microphone.. but I install/uninstall so many apps to test throughout any given day this would be hard to isolate.
Has anyone had this issue before??
I'll go ahead and reset to a clean ROM, stock ROM, etc. and see what results I get, but I wanted to post a Q first to see if anyone ran into the same issue. Thanks in advance!

[Q] sudden pop then no audio

hi all,
i've posted in another thread about this issue but i feel it may be slightly different. i get this issue on every rom i've tried, in which there will be a pop sound then audio will cut out, but come back on its own after between a few minutes or an hour (give or take). a restart of the device fixes it instantly also. this happens using headphones and earpiece/speaker, depending on what i'm doing (music, games, calls respectively). i suspect it's a hardware issue considering it happens seemingly randomly (after about 30 seconds to a minute of plants vs zombies 2, anywhere between 5 seconds and 20 minutes using headphones, but only once during a phone call).
any ideas? or is my device buggered?
cheers.
so after faffing around trying out different scenarios, i've come to the conclusion that it's either having wifi/3g/both enabled that seems to cause these audio drop outs. went for a walk earlier with headphones in but still had wifi/3g enabled, audio dropped out, so unplugged headphones, disabled wifi and 3g then plugged heads back in; no audio drop out for the entirety of my journey (about 45 mins).
any ideas??

I have had similar issues. It happens when I use a non stock kernel. If I use stock, or elementalx with vanilla voltages and no over clocking, I don't get the audio drop outs. Do you use the stock kernel?
I did find the problem was less severe when running magio rom, but it was still present. Over the past few months I've been using aosp roms mainly and didn't have an issue until maybe 3 weeks into using odyssey 3.21, that's when I switched to magio. As the problem lessened, I switched to odyssey rc (most recent) and it's back to being bad. As I mentioned, if I disable wifi / 3g I can listen to music no problem, but if I'm on a bus I want to be able to use data as well as music!
I'm going to run an ruu and reflash, see if that sorts it
Just in case anyone else gets this issue, i have a work around (at least i haven't experienced any dropouts whatsoever with audio since doing this).
disable wifi & 3g before plugging headphones in
plug in headphones
turn back on which ever you're going to need (or both)
no dropouts
Sound Drop Easy Fix!!
I believe I have discovered a fix for the problem we are having with the audio. I used your headphone fix and it worked beautifully but I decided that I didn't want to carry around my headphones every where I went. I then discovered the SoundAbout app in the play store. I downloaded the app and used the widget from the app for the easiest fix. I put the SoundAbout widget on my home screen and when I needed WiFi or Data I simply toggled the SoundAbout widget on, waited about 10-15 secs and enabled WiFi, waited and then I toggled the SoundAbout widget off. Once I was done with WiFi or data I toggled the SoundAbout widget back on, waited, disabled WiFi, waited and then toggled the widget off again. Doing this prevented the sound drops and I have been using my phone normally ever since.
I found that the sound would go out if you were on WiFi and you received a call so in the SoundAbout application I changed "SoundAbout Service" to ON - Foreground and "Phone call audio" to Wired Headphones and that seems to solve that issue. If you have any other issues or work arounds let me know.
i'm not getting any issues with calls now since i've started using this practice. as long as when i'm out i disable wifi i don't get any issues. the main problem for me was that i always listen to music when on a journey, but now as long as i disable wifi then start music, then put wifi on again it's fine. phone calls don't get glitched when i do this (even after stopping music playing and receiving a phone call).
hopefully at least others will find this thread useful
Hopefully so! I decided to go back to stock now audio is working 100%... I'm content for now at least

Help - No audio/mic in cell call, but voip works fine

I have an HTC Droid DNA with Verizon. It's almost 2 years old. I set s-off about a year ago, and have root access, but I didn't flash anything. It's worked fine this whole time. Yesterday morning i made a call without issue. Then, in the afternoon, when I tried to make a call, there was no sound during the call. I made no changes and it suffered no damage in between. If I try to make a call. the call connects, the other person gets the call and answers it, but I can't hear them and they can't hear me. Same with incoming calls. My phone rings, I answer, but neither of us can hear the other one. I've tried the speaker phone, headset, and bluetooth with the same results. I've also tried making a call through google hangouts, and the sound works just fine.
Checked mute/volume settings. Restarting multiple times didn't fix it. I finally decided the only solution was to wipe everything and reflash a stock rom. I flashed hboot, radio, and then the ROM. Still no audio in cell calls. I'm at a complete loss. Is it possible this is a hardware problem? A problem with some account setting on Verizon's end? Any thoughts our suggestions would be appreciated.

Unusual issue with T-Mobile Oneplus 7 Pro

Good afternoon,
I have a T-Mobile Oneplus 7 Pro (had it for 2 weeks now), it is SIM unlocked at this time and I am waiting on the token from Oneplus which I should have this evening if the 7 day rule still applies.
Issues mostly started today and I have done everything except for a factory reset.
1) When I receive a phone call and answer it the phone is automatically on speaker instead of phone although the icon shows as phone. To fix during the call I switched to speaker then back to phone and it was fine. Next call in, same thing again. This just started today, prior to that it operated normally
2) Related to #1, when connected to the Bluetooth in my truck and a call comes in instead of being on Bluetooth like it had been it will be on phone (ear piece) setting. Again to correct during call I switched to phone then back to Bluetooth and works correctly, again until the next call comes in. This issue started today, prior to that it operated normally
3) No matter what I have my ring volume set at the phone will always ring very quietly, most of the time I will not hear it and miss calls due to this. I know the speaker is fine as I can set it to as loud as it'll go and you can definitely hear it as well as videos, but no matter what it keeps doing the low volume ring. This started last night, prior to that it operated normally
4) Certain apps when opening freeze and end up having to force close the app. I will attempt a second time opening and almost always the same thing happens again. I have uninstalled/re-installed these apps and that changes nothing. I also have a Oneplus 6t and a Note 9, both have exact same apps and they work flawlessly on them. This started yesterday, prior to that it operated normally
5) My wife also has the 7 pro and has the issue with #4 above as well. Thankfully thus far that is all she is experiencing with it. Her issue began about 3-5 days ago.
I am not certain what the issue is, but if someone has any ideas let me know as I am not changing this to international version until I know if the phone itself has an issue.
Thanks!
I had the Bluetooth speaker issue both ways as you explained. I had my Galaxy watch paired and allowed to receive calls I shut that off and seems to have fixed it for me.

I have had the issue with #1 on the T-Mobile version few times. I switched to the international version and didn't have it at all. Switched back to the T-Mobile version last night and the first incoming call that I answered was that way. I think this is an issue with the T-Mobile version and it seems sporadic, at least on mine. Most likely gonna be switching back to the international version until I decide to to a JOD upgrade sometime down the road, plus the camera is so much better on the international version.
I have issue #2, like mikeb85, I also have a galaxy watch paired. I'll see if his solution fixes mine as well. Issue #4 for me seems to be related to restoring certain apps via OnePlus switch in my case. A fresh install of those apps (usually ones requiring permissions allowed by a pop-up) fixed that for me
Might be a good idea to just do a full factory reset just for safe measure. If it's still not working right, I would warranty a replacement.
I know it sounds like a cop out, but the only issue I'm experiencing is just the Ghost touching in the top right of the device.
Other than that, I just reboot and it's all good.
