And now each month on Verizon im going over 10gb with the Thunderbolt. Im really not doing anything different either. I have the same apps as the captivate, generally use it the same amount.
Anyone finding the same with their TBolt?

10GB/mo is very easy to achieve.
The only time I use alot of data is when I tether, even the occasional Pandora/Youtube/streaming doesn't use that to much.Plus, are in 4G or 3G area?

I have noticed, and have seen other threads about it, that I am using a lot more data on my TB then I ever did with my OG Droid. Like others say I haven't really changed my usage or apps really. At least not a lot that I should be seeing the jump in data that I have gotten.
It makes me think that there is something with the way LTE is working that is making the phone pull data more then it should.
used 9 gig so far and I only have 8 days left I think. The reason why I use so much because I use the mobile hotspot app to watch netflix
The iPhone and captivated are 3g phones, if you are using 4g I would expect it to be significantly more
I tether with my Eris and only use 3gb, I'm at 8 right now with 1 week Tobago. I think I'm forgetting that I'm not on my home WiFi and use my stuff unconservatively.

Not surprised.
I used about 2-3gigs on my nexus one t-mobile, and on my t-bolt, my last bill cycle was about 10.5 gigs, no change in how i used it.
I wouldn't be surprised. I have heard stories of 40 or 80 gigs of use, and some claim no tethering either. Maybe on ur next cycle you can force it to 3g only and see how much you use then. Atleast we got unlimited data.
Also > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071253
I used 2.8GB and that is mostly streaming pandora for 8 hours every day. I use WiFi at home. In the past though, I hit 10-15GB/month when I didn't have a home network connection (tethered to 2 laptops and a desktop though).
I think by saying "not using it any differently" we are forgetting that it is faster. In other words, I may still only spend a half hour on YouTube and a couple hours worth of web as before, but in that same space of time I have done so much more...
for instance YouTube and Pandora in high quality mode, downloading. roms over 4G instead of wifi, etc...
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA Premium App
instead of waiting for things to load on 3g and then saying "eff it i need to go" and put it back in your pocket. 4g is so fast that things loads when you need it to...
only explanation i can think of =P

As Newt would say, "mostly". At some point Verizon will start throttling your data but I admit that I don't know what that point is.
Throttle the top 5%. 10 gigs is no where near the top 5%. And just because its a 4G connection does not automatically mean more data usage. 1 GB of data is 1 GB of data whether on 4G or 3G. What does change is the amount of data you can use in the same hour long lunch break for instance. You can do things so much faster you don't realize how much you actually use.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
I'm at the end of my billing cycle and am just over 10 GB so far.
I listen to different streaming radios for about 8 hours of the day, at high quality, using Pandora, Slacker and Winamp's Shoutcast. When I'm at home, my phone is on WiFi.
My wife and I have been house hunting and I use Google Navigation to drive to these houses which pulls down a lot of images.
There may be some times that I pull up a video here and there, but not very often. I have tethered a couple times, but nothing significant.
I originally had AT&T before they got rid of unlimited, then switched to Sprint to get the EVO and now on Verizon because of their ridiculously fast LTE network. If Verizon had data caps like AT&T, or throttled like T-Mobile, I wouldn't have switched.
That's how I typically use my phone and easily use many GBs of data... which gets me thinking... how the heck did we survive on dial-up back in the day? How things have changed.
The simple reason you never went over 1gb/month with those phones is because it would take more than a month to transfer that much data on at&t's ****ty network
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I did 2.9GB last month and that was without tethering. Most of it was probably from using dropbox to download apps, kernels and ROMs that I wanted to test and play with, besides using Pandora almost daily. I'm sure I could hit 10GB without a problem if I tethered.
I have used 8+ Gigs in a month, no tethering.. and that was with my Droid X, so once I get 4G, I'm sure it'll be easy to get 10+.

Yup, increase coverage and speeds, lower the data cap in half, and use up your data in half the time! I think if I did the math right, I can cap out 5gigs in about 9hours of watching netflix via my playon app alone; which is about 20min a day for a given 30 day month. They should of kept the 10gig at least, considering EVERYTHING this phone does practically uses the internet.
Wow, I didn't know they did that. I thought I used mine a lot, but I just checked and I only use about 500-600 MB a month, lol

Yep, my wife and I have both been throttled and have unlimited. I hate TMO and can't wait to go to Sprint for real unlimited.
I never get close to this.. dont you have real internet, like 99.9% of the world, I believe even remote parts of Africa have internet.. you really dont need to tether your phone for everything.
wow wtf are you guys doing with your phones? tethering to your PC and broadcasting 1080p video on ustream?? My next billing cycle starts in 5 days and I've only used 250mb (I'm in a 4G area). I use my data A LOT too - youtube, surfing the web, market downloads, facebook, twitter, etc. I use an app called Line2 for my incoming/outgoing calls and text msgs which relys on my data and I still don't get close to 1GB.
I will tell you how I consume 5GB quickly.
I am an independent IT consultant where my clients don't allow access to their network with my machine. Therefore, I am tethered 12hrs every business day. Syncing a 3gb IMAP mailbox all day is a lot of data alone!
I consume 1GB every 3 working days.

Then you should have the common sense to have a better internet solution than tethering.
I've never run into the data cap, not because I don't use my data, but because I'm actually wise about it and don't carelessly burn bandwidth. Use Wifi when available, don't try to consume as much data as you can.

Hey, we have no data limits at sprint..
Except you'll be lucky to see more than 300 kbps in most areas during the day with 3g, and ~2-5 Mbps on 4g. We have people in the evo forum *****ing about the extremely slow network, ready to jump ship to vz or elsewhere.
I've come to the conclusion there is no ideal solution. Each provider is a compromise of different elements such as price, service, data, features, etc.
Common Sense? I was answering a question as to how one can get the to 5gb limit, period.
Common sense says Tmobile should have told me about the 5gb threshold when I agreed to a contract, and fine print is not acceptable.

Common Sense? You are expecting a Corporation sales person to be honest with you? They are interested in one thing and that is selling a product. They don't care if you get screwed in the end. They will just take your $200 ETF when you find out how much they lied to you... Well didn't disclose the TRUTH to you and you move on to the next corporation that does it to you in another way. That's what business has come to in America.
A warning would have been nice around 4gigs. TBH, if you say you use the web all the time and only have 4-500megs usage your lying. My biggest data drain went into streaming TV and music from my home server. I was unaware t-mobile even had a limit until i got the message saying I was cut off, because when i had my BB i would usually only average about 20megs a month usage. Hell, I ALMOST went with a 200meg connection, but didn't want to feel restricted so I went with unlimited.
These phones are beast, as they should be with a 4+meg connection! It just doesn't seem fair to offer us all these gadgets and offer us their TV packages and crap then take it away just barely into the month because we actually use what they advertised to sell the product!

On average my apps have been between 2-3megs each...
So at ~87 custom apps, that I have actually kept and not just downloaded to try, at 2.5megs each that's 217.5megs; a total which almost meets your usage so far alone.
Well, I'm in my first month with TMO and already got my 5GB notice. Isn't it nice. I get a ripping 20 KB/SEC on my best download but, usually around 10 to 12KB/SEC on AMERICAS LARGEST 4G NETWORK. That happened right in the middle of a SW update and their CRAPPY network could not even handle a text message and the download at the same time. They cut me down to 5KB/SEC and it took close to 2 hrs to DL 50MB. What a deal they are giving us. The big problem is the only company that I have ever been happy with is no longer doing business in my area. Lots to look forward to.
My contract recently expired and I am looking to upgrade. My question is, is the 2gb Data plan enough to support the Infuse, Atrix, or Inspire? I have read the other thread on this question, however all the responses were about getting unlimited data. I would get it but, being in school, i cant justify/afford the cost of buying an iPhone 2g. I have been looking for a fellow friend or developer in my area to lend me theirs but I am looking to get the new phone in a week or two.
So, in general, is the 2gb plan enough?
My day during the year, 8-3, classes, no major usage, mabey 30 mins internet.
4-10 moderate usage, mabey up to 1 hour usage. Internet, mabey an app or two, and possible Pandora a day or two a month. Tethering mabey 20 mins max 3 days a week or less. weekends, moderate usage, internet sparingly all day, mabey 1:00 max. Summer is similar to weekends.
What is the general opinion? Or personal experience.
I live in Florida and used Pandora a good amount of time during my drive to N Carolina and back as well as my Google Maps, and didn't get anywhere near the 2gb. I'm on my phone most of the day at work (730-4) and use the browser, Facebook app, and various other data using apps. The only problem you might run into is the tethering imo.

Mr.Nun.Ya
it is enough, i use my phone all day and when i get the bill, its nowhere near 2gb.
Unlimited plans make you feel warm and fussy because you always know you won't go over. If you are aware of how you use the internet you will be fine. Me, I turn off my mobile network religiously it save massive battery life and all the apps that want to update can't. (if its in my pocket I don't care about someones facebook update) Second I use WiFi when I can: its free, normal much faster, I do not have 4g but I do have a 10m connection at home and a larger one @ the university I work at.
If you every want to check how much data you have used use this number and it will show you your data usage; *3283#
If you check that once a week you will never go over, or you can use an app like 3g Watchdog Pro(or lite) which is absolutely amazing...it shows you how much dat\ you used that day/week/month...it predicts how much you will use by the date you will be billed based on your current usage, calculates how much data you can use a day for the whole month without going over, it is a very nice app/widget to have
2gb DAta Plan
I constantly go over and I have 4gb, but I also am traveling and tether. Since I never had AT&T until now I was told I am not able to get unlimited which I think is stupid.
That's crap if I had a cap with att I would move to Verizon they have. no cap and the thunderbolt I don't no why you guys think it alright you probably think its OK to pay extra to tether how I use my data is my business its just a way to squeese more money from you
Mr.Nun.Ya
I also have the 2gig data plan, I have not came close to my limit at all. I am on my phone all the time, at least my wife says. The close I came to was 1 gig, that was re-downloading all of my google apps, before I swtich over to my WIfi.
I never use Wifi- because my broadband connection is slower than my ATT connection on the phone. Ihave an older unlimited data plan, and I use 7-8G in a typical month.
Verizon
I was told and have read on several websites that Verizon will be dropping the unlimited data plans and adopting a tiered system like AT&T. If you have your unlimited with AT&T right now, find a 3g smartphone that is acceptable and keep your unlimited. I made the mistake of not doing that and regret it. I do however really like my Inspire.

I got busted with AT&T using an iPhone... convinced them I had no idea what tethering was or jailbreaking, etc so they let me keep my unlimited plan. Even let me switch it when I got an Inspire after telling me I needed a "4G data plan", even though they don't have 4G... morons. Anyways, I think I'll try it on here. Don't count on 10 gigs as a soft limit. Companies are working towards eliminating unlimited plans, and eliminating the one in a <many many> stray customers who hog bandwidth hardly make any difference.
in my town AT&T sucks, coverage is completely spotty, we just got 3G about 2 weeks ago and the coverage is unbearable, in my house i get no service at all but when i go in the middle of town it will jump between 5 bars with 3G to 1-2 bars with edge constantly but when ever i go to a city with good 3G im tethering to my mac constantly and my data never goes over 1.5 GB even though i have the unlimited plan
I used WiFi Hotspot once when my home landline internet was on the fritz for a few hours. It was a nice backup.

I'm thinking of making the switch over to Att because of sprint's lack luster speeds and I was wondering if anyone is having issues staying under the data cap? I currently have unlimited data but I don't use my phone much anymore because i am usually either roaming or having sub 150k speeds.

The 2gb datapro plan is a good amount of data if you dont use netflix or slingplayer. You can use youtube but not too much. I recommend just getting a used ebay tmobile phone and using it with walmarts tmobile cheapo $50 plan. Then root the phone to remove the "4g" throttle. Or get the $30 walmart plan if you use less then 100 minutes or only use voip apps.
I'm 20 days into my first real billing month and have used only 546MB of my 2GB plan. At home and at work I have wifi, so my only data usage would be on the road. My significant data usage comes from streaming music on my way to work and going back home. That's about 45 minutes total, maybe a few minutes less sometimes, of constant streaming. I don't run any updates or download/install apps while out on the road. I also do some browsing and streaming music during the weekend too while I'm out of the house. I don't think I will reach 1GB this month...
What has you average been on sprint? You can see it online in billing. I have been on art since august after years with sprint and the difference was night and day. I use a ton of data though so I was fortunate that one of the existing lines on the family plan I joined had unlimited data

Although I have an unlimited plan, I follow my data usage. For a typical billing period, I use something between 3 and 4 GB of data. I am a moderate user, mostly checking the web and email and hardly any streaming.
Make yhd switch you wont regret it. Internet on hspa+ or Lte is blazing fast compared to sprint. Had sprint since 07 left about 2 months ago. Last month my usage was 1.4 Gb. Normal internet usage really doesn't use that much data. And being unlimited is kind of overrated when your speeds stink.

4 days in, 700MB used.
At this rate, it'll be about 3GB.... wow.
I though it'd be more then that, I'm actually trying to get throttled for a test...... time to download the entire Adobe Master CS5 collection on LTE.

Don't they just charge you $10 for each GB past your limit?

Not when you have unlimited data. They just throttle your speed.
Read it and weep...

Doesnt matter to me, i only tether when necessary. Most the time at my house my phone goes on my wifi. This probably has something to do with those who abuse tethering by using lte for all their stuff. If you want to complain, thats where i would start, not verizon.

So pissed.
First off: !!!!
OK, there has GOT to be some sort of way around this, or at least a way to delay this from happening to one's self for a bit....
A) What about going out now and purchasing a new LTE device at full retail ahead of your upgrade date (mine is this November)? Will that grant me an extra 2 yrs of unlimited data before I am forced off?
B) And what's this I hear about buying phones directly thru the Play Store and going month-to-month with Vzw? I was hearing you will soon be able to do this and retain unlimited data this way?
There's gotta be a way....I will NOT go to shi**y At&t or Sprint or TMobile......
How many people really use 4 gigs a month? Thats what i have cox hispeed at home for. I know between cox, vzw, and sirius for car and phone, its expensive, but i have everything i need whenever and wherever i need. I know this sucks for those who abuse it, but shouldnt all around network quality be better if it is limited? Ive been unlimited since the alltel days, im not happy, but the only time i tether is once a week when at my hotel, just to have a secure connection. I can shop around next time, but as much as i travel and work in the sticks, verizon is my best option.

Some of us like myself don't have the luxury of high speed internet at home. I use a lot data because my phone is my internet connection. I don't use most of my data on 4G though because I only get it at my house and I disable it when I'm working because I'm at locations that dont have it so it eats my battery up. They won't keep it like this forever anyway. I remember when 3g came out and they charged people for data pretty much until the whole network was 3g and then by allowed it to be unlimited. Anyhow I don't really see Verizon keeping this up forever. I bet they will lose a lot of customers over this move. If they won't renew my unlimited plan I'm gone.

But the phone as the internet connection is the problem. Thats not what it was meant for. People playing ps3 or xbox, streaming netflix, torrent downloads. Everyone who is abusing it is why its making them go this route. There is free wifi almost everywhere. People can sign up for home internet service. If your a college student, the activity center will have wifi. I hate paying $54 a month for internet at my home, but i also get up to 50 meg dl, i run all laptops, printers, and all cell phones connect as soon as its in range. If people want to leave for a more crappy network to abuse, let them. The tethering is a big reason phones are getting harder to unlock. The only unlimited in our area is sprint, but they suck outside of big cities. If forcing limits on everyone makes the network better, ill adjust to it, as i always have.

Unfortunately I have to tether for work, and also do it at home because my apt's internet selections are wayyyy too much money for the crappy speed. I am sitting at 24gbs right now for this billing cycle, and it resets on the 18th....so I am not ready to pay $220 worth of overages.....outrageous

T-Mobile here I come. Again....

It really is unfortunate that they are going to end up doing this. I don't know what other carriers would be worth switching to. Anyone have any ideas for a carrier/phone that would even be worth going to or is it better to just ride this out and hope for the best?

T mobile isnt true unlimited. They throttle it to nothing after 2 gigs. My son is a supervisor there. He takes his free phone, but says the network sucks. Have fun with that.

I have 3 lines on my account and don't use that much!! Well, I will have to find another network as well. I pay enough as it is, not paying anymore. Sorry big red, but I think you will losing a lot of customers.

Well, seeing as how there's nothing groundbreaking that any of the new phones can do that the Thunderbolt can't already do, I'll be using my Thunderbolt until rubber bands and epoxy can't hold it together anymore. I got mine on launch day, and other than the kickstand losing a bit of its finish, the rest of the phone is in perfect condition.
Wife is bummed about not being able to get an iphone5 once it comes out, but maybe after this fails badly for Verizon, and/or there's a big class action lawsuit, and they finally kick in the auxillary retro thrusters, I'll consider getting a new phone then. Sprint LTE is still going to suck because they're still using 1900mhz that doesn't do good building penetration, thats the reason Wimax failed.
I left sprint where I had 25% off monthly for big red.

I only tether mine when my wife needs to do something for work which is maybe twice a month. Even without tethering I still use 5 gb on a low month. Lots of Pandora and with a 2 year old netflix is a must for long trips, or even when waiting at the doctor or when waiting at a restraunt. If they kill unlimited for me I will either change carriers or go to a feature phone. I love my bolt, but I can move vids to my tablet for my kid and bring my zune back out for music. I'm old enough to remember life before the internet much less mobile anything, and smart enough to not get raped by big red because they want more money. Unfortunately some people are so attached to being connected 24/7 they will pay whatever to keep that data going.

+1 on this. I'm right there with you. I have this phone with all its cool features, but I don't need it!! Life would be much simpler without it all anyway.
