Ok I'm newish... I've had a few Android phones but the only one I ever rooted and hacked and customized a lot was the Hero and that was last year so now I'm lost again. I just got my captivate home and I'm reading so many threads claiming to be the best lag fix (I desperately need to fix lag because coming from an iPhone 4 this phone is driving me nuts) or the best this or that.... I need to know what I should do next... There is super rooter and then there is unleash the beast and even still there is pimp my captivate.... I'm just figuring out what I should do... I want to get rid of all this Samsung AT&T garbage (including market restrictions), I want to get rid of this lag, I want the fastest galaxy S possible and I want to customize the heck out of this... where do I begin? Any guidance at all would be greatly appreciated.
I'd check out the different threads here and in the dev forum. you'll want to root it, enable sideloading, apply the speedfix of your choice, install launcher pro (or adw.launcher), probably use fightspit's circle battery indicator (the default one is horrible, shows full when you've got 80%), and in general just browse the stickies and high post count threads for neat hacks that you might be interested in.
I would def. Check out launcher pro if I was you, I've had it since day one and never had a problem with lag. If you like it donate to get the plus version cause it has some sense like widgets. I ran one click root then unleash the beast. Also did the battery mod as well. All I could ask for now is a complete gps fix and froyo and I'd be a happy camper. Also check out beautiful widgets, I know they are all paid but worth every penny if u ask me.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.... I forgot to mention that I am running launcher pro. The lag comes in when scrolling through apps and large lists some times as well as when opening and closing apps and changing settings and things quickly... it just hiccups and needs to catch up with itself. Is unleash the beast and the guide from this link the same thing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761819

Check out the SuperRooter Extreme thread...This make your phone fly...I have it on mine and its great..
How do I get nandroid on this phone? I've looked in the market but I can't find it...
The first step of running super rooter is nandroid backup.
rom manager for the nandroid backups
titanium backup to back-up individual apps/settings to bring them back when you get a rom you like
second for designgear's SuperRooterExtreme. he's compiled the best of the best in this...for now

ROM Manager will back up your ROM once you get it all setup the way you like it. Since you are still on the stock ROM and the is a restore for that already ( STOCK Odin3 1 Click ) you don't need to backup your ROM. Install the superrooter and then once you get it all setup download ROM manager for the market and you can make nandroid backup using it...It makes it easy to switch ROM's on the fly...
In the comments section on the market it says I have to be root to use this... is this true? Kind of defeats the purpose if I want to use this to backup BEFORE I root the phone... :-(

I have access to a Windows computer today so I'll try to do it... However how do I ensure that I don't have to repay for my apps that I've already purchased? I had a few apps from before when I tried and Android phone and not all of the apps I purchased were in my download history in the market app... I don't want to repay for apps. :-(
Any more thoughts guys?
So I didn't want to bog down posting something that has been answered multiple times over and over again but I am throughly confused on rooting, loading a custom ROM and kernel. So if you can give a straight forward answer to a straight forward question please do.
How do I:
Permanently root my Epic?
After reading I think I would like to install the Epic Experience ROM?
If I install the Epic Experience ROM do I also install the Phoenix kernel (Phoenix kernel is the one I like)?
What is the correct process for installing those kernels and ROMS?
Detailed responses are greatly appreciated!
I am almost thinking that I should wait for the FROYO update to roll out but my usage destroys my battery life and I cannot have my phone dying on me half way throughout the day. It seems the choices I have made (Epic Experience ROM and Phoenix kernel) will greatly improve my battery life. If I do chose to mod my phone does this affect my OTA to FROYO in the future?
Thanks in advance to all your help!

Refer to the guide at the bottom of my signature.
For your question about flashing kernels and ROMs, you'll flash them at the same time from Clockwork recovery.
Can't type all of your answers...it would take me a while so INSTEAD.....go to the stickies....read and follow the first sticky....then go to the third sticky and download what you need....also if not mentioned in those stickies after the first and before going to the third sticky down ......clockwork recovery.....prob in the third sticky tho.....enjoy and welcome
Edit: looks like i still got beat to the punch anyway

No problem. Feel free to PM me or add me on Gtalk, too. I'm always willing to help.
I've been lurking for a while, I will have my Epic Monday so I'm just preparing to root in the evening. I've rooted my Hero so I'm not a complete noob but do have a question.
I have downloaded the following:
-Clockwork Recovery
-Epic Experience ROM
-Sammy Drivers
Is this right, run the one click clockwork batch file which will root me and put clockwork recovery on the sd card so I can boot into recovery, nandroid then flash a rom?
Im not understanding the need to joeykrim root if noobl's clockwork gives perma root.
The EE rom doesnt include a kernel, so you will want to decide on which you would like to download.
As far as I understand, if you only install clockwork recovery (without the one click root), you will have the ability to flash a rom and kernel, but you wont necessarly have root unless you flash a rooted kernel, then you definately will have root.
Got it. Thanks! I actually have phoenix kernel ready to flash once EE is nandroided so i should be all good for root! Thanks for your help!
The first step is probably the most difficult and that is getting you phone recognized by your computer. You have to get the drivers recognized and make sure you have a cable that actually works and a usb port that magically works. The best way to test the cable is first get you phone working in mass storage mode. Then after you can get you phone recognized in usb debug mode you have easy sailing.
I am sure this should be covered in DevinXtreme's walkthrough these are just my 2 cents from my experience.
Edit: I just checked the walkthrough and both of the driver downloads seem to not work they both come up as 227 byte files
also 2 things, which, if they are confusing then just ignore me but I never had to type anything into the cmd prompt and mine worked just fine. Also zip files you want to flash using clockwork mod can be placed anywhere not just on root of sd card. I keep my stuff pretty organized.
There's a video walkthrough on youtube
The video root guide is quite helpful. If you have issues getting your PC to "see" your phone try USB ports on the back of your tower until Windows recognizes it. Front case ports seem to be a no-no for phone recognition. Even getting the same rear port to recognize the phone can be tricky... just play the USB shuffle until one works. It will eventually after installing the Samsung drivers. I've read the stock USB cable is crap, always worked for me though.

I would recommend the guide from the following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067
Easy to follow, and as long as you know what youre doing you should be good. So easy, a 12 year old can do it.
IF you use your phone as much as I do, nothing besides a back up battery will help you ensure you can use your phone an entire day. Plenty of people claim great battery life. However, what ive noticed is that battery life fully depends and varies due to certain factors that you cannot 100% emulate unless you have their exact set up, with their exact apps and exact settings for every app and every function, and sometimes their exact location or service with the network, 4G or WiFi.
Personally, I prefer Epic Experience with Mixup Kernel. I like the look of AOSP Magic ROM, but Epic Experience seems to have better speed and the Dev responds and updates frequently.

Try installing a custom rom and different kernel. You phone will will get a huge speed boost. Read the threads in the development section for more details.
There isn't much in the way of flashy stuff as far as root apps go, it's mostly simple, deep, and very, VERY useful.
Like Titanium Backup. Also, Root Explorer, the best file manager available for Android. Complete control over the filesystem; nothing is off limits. SetCPU is another wonderful thing, you can underclock your CPU to save battery (and overclock if you use a compatible kernel). Ad Away and AdFree both do the same thing: block ads. Advertisements won't load, not in the browser and not in any application. They're not perfect though; some do get through. I've found Ad Away to be slightly more effective. Keyboard Manager isn't as popular as the rest I've talked about but it's a personal favorite; it lets you automatically switch between two different keyboards when you're in landscape/portrait orientation. I use Swype on portrait and Swiftkey X on landscape, and the switch happens completely automatically.
Also, this isn't a root app but it's in the same general philosophy and I can't pimp this enough, Tasker. It's an extremely powerful tool that basically lets you tweak the behavior of your phone in any way you can think of. It's hard to describe; I keep my GPS off to save battery but every time I start an app that I want to have it, GPS automatically comes on. I use a gameboy emulator but I hate that it vibrates on every button press, so every time the app starts, haptic feedback turns off. It's an automation tool.
But there's one enormous thing I haven't mentioned, because it's not an application at all: custom roms and kernels. You'll need to do some further work to get this, but search XDA for NVFlash. It will let you put Clockworkmod Recovery on your phone, overwriting the default recovery mode and letting you modify the system itself. Custom roms (operating systems) are the heart and soul of XDA, and a source of near-infinite joy in trying out new ones. The G2X has a fairly good repertoire, including the two biggest names in Android roms: Cyanogenmod and MIUI. As for kernels, they can let you overclock the phone to improve performance or undervolt it to save battery life. Discussion of the different roms/kernels and the merits thereof have been done ad infinitum, so a search of the forums should yield all you should need.
Thanks I already have clock recovery installed. So roms and kernels have to be installed together. What's kernel?

You don't have to install custom kernels together with custom roms since custom roms have a stock kernel that will suffice. The type of custom kernel will be determined by the type of custom rom you choose. I am currently on cm7 (rom) and running faux 0.4.2 (kernel).

+1 for Tasker. I'm new to the G2X but have been with Andriod since the beginning and Tasker is a must have. Control anything and everything that your phone does based off any kind of trigger. LOVE IT.
I just got my G2X from corporate and my Seidio case and am amazed with the speed. Haven't rooted it yet but have noticed several things that have made me want to. Resisting is futile.

Rooting gives you full access to your file system. Its similar to having an administrator account in Windows. The benefits of rooting come from what you can do with that access, not necessarily from rooting itself. You can make tweaks to your system that give you better battery life and better performance. You can completely change the theme of your phone. You can delete apps that the carrier installed that you wouldn't be able to delete otherwise. And most of that has been made much easier by developers releasing apps that do it all for you. A lot of them are in the Market.
An even greater benefit of the G2X is that it has an unlocked bootloader. This makes it very easy and hassle-free to install any custom OS (rom) that you want to ... assuming its compatible with the G2X. Its like having a completely new phone each time you install a new rom.
Lastnite after reading a lot I installed eaglesblood rom. So far so good. So if I want to install a different kernel what difference will that make?

It works with Froyo and Gingerbread.
Rooting isnt much fun. You don't really need root at all on the G2x unless you want to use a few special apps like Titanium backup or Root Explorer.
With most phones, rooting is required to begin the process of flashing a custom recovery like Clockwork Mod. With the G2x we don't need root to flash a recovery.
So root is useless more or less. At least dont expect magical and wonderful things to start happening.
All you need is to download a custom rom, nvflash CWM, reboot into CWM, and flash it. Roms is where the magic happen.

Yea I have noticed a lot of people are confused about what exactly root is needed for. Like you said, you don't need root to install recovery and flash a rom.
That said, root is very useful even with an otherwise stock installation. It allows you maximum flexibility over what can be done with your phone. And not everyone wants to flash a custom rom and start completely over setting up their system.
I have CM nightly 179 on mine and boot time is around 15-20 seconds.

if you installed "rom manger/clockwork recovery" via the market i would recommend actually flashing clockwork recovery via nvflash (nv as in nvidia). i say "actual" flashing, meaning that it replaces the stock android recovery w/ clockwork recovery. you'll need this to put new "roms" or operating systems (though all android based) onto your mobile. see my procedure (for desktops/laptops running linux only; if using windows/mac, please look elsewhere) here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259852
i also recommend cyanogenmod v7.1.0.1 stable for a rom
Rooted my lg g2x
I rooted my lg g2x, but I can't get new roms. Rom Manger will not download and install. When I go to cwm I can't find the rom. so can anyone help me with this, I really want to put cm7 on my phone. And all the ones I downloaded of my laptop was bad.
Downloaded rom would be on SD card in cwm.

Hello, XDA! and, even though we haven't met yet, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE STUFF ON MY PHONE!!!!!! This is my first, and dreaded post.
I'm new to smartphones. My first was an iSUCK 3g. Now, I have the SGS4G! I'm totally new to this wprld, and every day, I'm being blown away by something new. Anyways, I have read two guides on this site already, but I'm still suffering from a little confusion. I think my problem comes from when I first rooted my phone. I was in a hurry to root it, because I needed to unlock the carrier permissions, so I could use my ATT sim. I hadn't found this site yet, sadly. I had tried a few things, to no avail, until I came across a you-tube video with some kid showing me how it's done, and other littler kids screaming in the background. Following the video step, by step, got it done, but he failed to go over, and explain what we were actually doing. Now, I don't know what ROM I have, or what kernel. It's not a big issue, because this phone now totally blows me away, especially the launchers.
I really enjoy this phone over the iSucks, becuase I like computers, and I'm more tech savvy than most. Perhaps that's where more of my confusion comes from... the terminology. So, on to the issue:
My RAM seems to run unusually high! with the GOtskmanager, it's always clocking between %72 - %79. I got RAM Manager Pro, which sometimes brings me down to %65 - %69, but it usually doesn't last long. I think I have it nailed down. I think it comes from certain apps that seem to run themselves. I have auto sync off, and I've DONE MY RESEARCH (some of which, I've yet to comprehend) I know not to use a task killer to routinely kill apps, and I know how the OS works, and allocates its RAM. So, I won't even worry about it if someone says these levels are normal.
Any tips on what I should do with my new phone? I saw a video that I can't find again, where this guy had his homescreen set up in such away, that the apps made this 3d cube of tiny boxes (apps) that moved like a rubik's cube. HOW DO I DO THAT!? It's not in any of the launchers I've tried. Anyways, thank you once again, XDA, you guys are awesome. I'm just a newb. Thank you to the users who made the guides!!
Ram is at 84% right now, NOT DOING ANYTHING!
Look at my guide that i have linked in my sig and read through the second post to find a custom rom that you like (i suggest Valhalla Black) and my guide tells you how to flash it. If you have questions, feel free to ask in the guide thread or pm me
And I believe the 3d cubes are part of SPB Shell launcher

Thank you Julz! I have read your guide thoroughly. I know to search, and research before asking questions. Like I said, I'm just slightly still confused. Did I not put a custom ROM on my phone when I rooted it?
Do I have to factory restore, or uninstall the current ROM in some way before getting another?
Also, I think I fixed the RAM issue. What is normal levels for my device? I can't find normal RAM levels listed anywhere on the net for my device.
Read the first link in my signature as an addition to Juls' guide. After rooting GB you need a custom kernel. Look for SGS Kernel Flasher in either guide to take your next step.
I think you should research more. But to help you a bit...
How you rooted your phone? You know about ClockWorkMod Recovery? Know about Odin or Heimdall?
Also, there is a section in Setting that tells a lot of your phone that is called About Phone.

Firmware: 2.3.6
Baseband: TE59VUVKJ6
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-sms-kj6-vo.1.0+
Build: GINGERBREAD.VUVKJ6
I used Heimdall to do this, as per the video guide I followed. I just downloaded Odin, for future tasks. I love the Norse theme to this stuff, I know the Eddas practically by heart, as well as the elder Futhark, and actual history of the ancient Scandanavian Vikings.
Be sure to keep your ODIN and Heimdall ports seperate. You can get by with CWM for custom ROM's now except to recover or clean your phone up. Read the Gremlin Remover thread to consider using after a custom ROM flash or two. Your other option is KJ6 Heimdall One-Click.

I've read the guides, the only thing I don't understand about that process, is that, will I need to set up all my apps again, am I starting my phone from scratch? Which ROM would you personally suggest?
When I'm using a custom ROM, am I restricted in any way? Can I still use the market?
Did you read the guide in the first link in my signature as suggested above?
It is best to start fresh when flashing a new ROM. A lot of apps have back up features within the app for settings and such (i.e. GoLauncher).
I recommend Valhalla Black. But all the 2.3.6 ROM's are great.
No restrictions. Except maybe watching movies in the market on rooted devices.

Read it.
One more thing. You say start from scratch... Factory Reset? So I will need to root again? Also, I had to unlock the phone to use with ATT. Will I have to do that again?
I mean with your apps. Factory reset won't unroot you. It isn't a bad idea to do a factory reset between flashings as a precautionary measure.
You shouldn't have to unlock again either.

I'm on ATT as well and flash my phone all the time. I've never lost the unlock.
My brother, thank you so very much for the info! I have been reading the guide you mentioned, and now I know why. 2 guides in there! I can't thank you enough, I've hit thanks on all your replies here, because little by little, you're really helping my understanding of it all. It must be frustrating trying to help people like myself! Thanks for trying to push this stuff through my thick head! However, I've encountered another problem, following your guide:
Trying to back up my efs folder, using Astro File Manager... says it cannot do it! I guess this means I need something that requests superuser permissions?
Any program you would recommend? or can I just do it manually with my computer, like save it on my comp or something?
I recommend starting where it talks about SGS Kernel Flasher. Then once you have the custom kernel with CWM - do and nandroid back up and save the nandroid back up on your computer for safe keeping. That will have your efs folder within it. And I recommended Super Manager
And flash this kernel -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25115050&postcount=1
I guess the kernel I have, doesn't have CWM. So, if I flash a new one, do I need to delete the one I have first or anything? Or just go about flashing a new one, like I never did one in the first place? I can try to find the video guide I followed if you think it will help.
Hi,
I still hesitate weather to flash Clean Rom or not.... it's not that I care much about loss of warranty, but I'm not familiar at all with these unlocking, rooting, flashing operations and not sure if I'll manage to do this flawless.
...so I still have a stupid hope that ASUS will solve all stock rom problems (lags, hiccups...etc) with JB 4.2.
Is it worth to wait and expect ASUS to update stock rom to the same level as Clean Rom is now (haven't seen myself ...only read in this forum)?
i am excatly in your position and feel the same way

Read the guide threads. Invest some time to learn, you will be rewarded with a better tablet. (or an expensive brick, depending on how thoroughly you read the guides)

Unlikely. CleanROM contains so many tweaks and workarounds that are not suitable for inclusion in an official firmware.

Trust me, cleanrom is super fast and smooth. It's worth it. When JB 4.2 come out, Cleanrom will have a new build on 4.2 and it will be even faster. Stock rom will always far behind. Currently we have all the automated scripts that do the install for us, so not to worry too much how this.
1. Unlock (download the unlock app and run it. No risk here, either it worked or failed, no harm)
2. Install recovery script to pust custom recovery (double click on the bat file and watch it does the rest)
3. Boot into recovery, select "install" browser to the romzip file and swipe to install
Reboot...profit!! The only downside is warranty, will be void if unlock. There is no news that JB 4.2 will be available for our tf700, so I won't hold my breath for this.
To my mind easiest way to get CROMI Installed for noob is to follow instructions in this tutorial video http://youtu.be/iank8iYulzo .
As this video is not very fresh and there are alreadt new versions of ADB tool, TWRP and CROM...I'm not sure if I can go step by step using newer versions of particular software....
Can anybody confirm that I can follow instructions on this tutorial using ADB tool ver 6 for update to CROMI 3.2 ?
I'm on stock JB 10.4.4.25

Chiming in...
I wouldn't put much faith in any forthcoming incursions of Android.
Just custom ROM your tab and be happy.
The Jelly Bean\Project Butter performance bust was the last straw for me.
Ok then... few questions before unlocking...
Kernel.
What kernel shoud I choose? Generaly my target is to speed up browsing and to have battery life as long as possible ....so far as I understand I should choose Asus stock kernel? Is this right?
DPI.
What is stock DPI of TF700? I read in some posts that some people had problems with some apps because of choosing wrong DPI. What DPI should I choose in oreder to have as less probs as possible?
FSYNC.
Does disabling of FSYNC has significant impact on performace? Is it worth to mess with it?
Thanks in advance.

240 is stock.
I have always chosen 240 until recently.
213 is working very well for me no problems.

This is the most important choice IMO I always disable Fsync.
I have never had a problem with disabling this and have seen nothing other than benefits.
Thanks in advance.

you are more than welcome!
First impresion of clean rom is very very goooood
Even better than I expected!!!! :good:
Even with enabled fsync it flies.
Big respect to all developers!
I'm thinking the same thing. I've held off too long, think it's time to unlock this.
From watching that video it looks pretty straight forward. I'm 90% sure I'm going to take plunge this week. Hope I don't mess this up.

Kinda enjoyed not dealing with flashing, wiping, reinstalling, etc. all the time, I did that with my last phone what seemed like every day. I just couldn't stand HTC Sense and the bloatware, had to do it.
Unlike most here I don't mind the stock Asus firmware on this thing so I figured I'd save some free time and not mess around with anything. Now I'm kinda bored and really wanna see what this device is made of.
I'll probably get my SG3 going next!

Trust me:
1) installing a custom Rom on the tf700 makes this bad boy fly! It is really night and day
2) Installing a custom Rom on a (contract free) SIII is super easy. Took me 30 seconds to root, no need to unlock and boom. You are ready to flash CWM (highly recommended for the SIII) and there you go: a cool custom rom for the SIII
(PS: For the tf700 I'd recommend to use TWRP as a recovery)

Do you have a screenshot of a home screen with icons of each dpi for comparison?

I'm in the same situation (TF700 is sitting at home now, freshly delivered this morning and I'm fighting the urge to have a 'family crisis' that needs my attention and ditch work). I started a thread to try an pull together an easy list with links to get from un-rooted, locked, stock to custom pleasure New (virgin/stock) TF700 to CROMI 3.2 - is this right? as well as check before I started that everything was right.
I think that I've got it sorted in post 6 and have spent a lot of time trawling the various forum posts. In the video you mention from saugstauber / Dominik is really good and he notes that as he hasn't rooted his device prior to starting that he needs to push the recovery via the ADB tool rather than GooManager (that needs root).
I hope to get cracking on it later and will try to document each stage of the process and write it up for the XDA community with some explanations of each stage.
I did it yesterday, it was super easy. No hiccups at all
Started with CleanROM, then decided to try BB7, but it was still a little too buggy. CleanROM seems more stable, back to that for now.
So far, I don't notice too much of a difference performance wise. It's still not smooth at all switching between applications and opening and closing them. Scrolling while browsing isn't any better either. Both my Kindle Fire and SG3 are still much smoother than this.
Oh well, I'm glad to be able to get rid of the bloatware at least.

Hm... strange... my experience with clean rom is very good....compared with stock rom browsing became pleasure...of course it is not perfect...but now I feel that I have different tablet.
Earlier l was getting "wait/close" message several times per day...now it's gone. Scrolling through pages is A LOT smoother. And generaly typing lagis almost gone...switching throw apps is a lot quicker. Youtube shows videos with any pauses.
I was in the exactely same situation of the OP, but decided to go to the flashing world for my new TF700.
I followed carefully every instruction a the flashing of CleanROM went well and now I have a new tablet. Ir is now really smooth and most of the lags are gone.
For you that are still hesitating I highly recommend unlocking and flashing CleanROM to see that you have a top device.
For your information the steps I took:
1) Unlocked
2) Installed ADB on my computer. Struggled a bit to set the path (which was not exactley the same as in the tutorial) but all went well.
3) Installed drivers via ADB tools.
3) Checked if ADB was correctly installed and the tablet recognized by pc.
4) Flashed TWRP via ADB.
5) Backed up device using TWRP.
6) Copied ROM to the tablet internal memory.
7) Flashed ROM, choosing modified stock kernel by thats_ok and kept fsync enabled.
8) Enjoyed a new tablet.
