Upgrade Phone - General Questions and Answers

Here is the thing.....
I can't upgrade till sept. 15 for verizon. I've been looking at a couple of phone developer forums.
It seems that the Droid Incredible and Thunderbolt forums seem to be the best for different roms.
Hopefully, the incredible 2 will be cheap by then. I know its not a matter of time before someone finds a way to get it fully rooted.
I have to give all the juice to the droid eris development team because they are all awesome. I love the rom's there and I hate to upgrade. However, I think the new phones offer so much more.

Go with the Samsung Vibrant for sure!

[Q] Slightly OT, which cellphone do you use?

So I chose the G Tablet in large part due to the community. My Verizon phone contract is about to end in 2 months and I'm looking at an Android phone (of course). Looking for tethering most importantly for my gtab but I guess I might find that Verizon has locked down the devices too much. I'm open to custom ROMs assuming they are as polished as the ones we have here. Anyone have suggestions?
I've got an EVO and have been quite happy with it. Large modding community, multiple good and polished roms with very active devs, both AOSP and Sense. WifiTether comes with most of the custom ROMS and is free, and speeds are actually pretty good if you happen to be in a 4G area. Phone is good, though battery life is a bit poor (but then again, most Android phones are that way).
All in all I'm pretty pleased with it, though there are plenty of good options out there.
Thanks, I'll have to look into as many as I can. I have a Blackberry now and have done diddly squat for customization of it. Originally planned to flex my development skills a bit but just never got around to it.
Sprint HTC Hero rooted w/ Froyo.
Lg Optimus S (Rooted w/ froyo)
Nexus One on AT&T.
Have been tethering my gtablet since the day I took it home.
Att Samsung captivate great phone except for lousy GPS Samsung should stick to tvs... rooted 2.2
I'm Tethering using Samsung Fascinate. Sucks cuz of no 2.2, still 2.1. In 2 Months many Good Phones will be out So you could try those but Ive had This phone and Droid Incredible for Verizon and both tether fine. Just need Root.
Im using the good ol Droid Eris that is rooted.
I'm Rocking a Droid (Original) with Cyanogen as of now... a few weeks ago it was another flavor.. I love the android phone dev. scene.. Changing Mods is like changing socks.. ;-)
Looking forward to the HTC Thunderbolt Upgrade in FEB
Stuck on the Moment with 2.1. Rooted, customized kernel with Froyo-like JIT enhancements, wifi tethering, and other good stuff. It's reasonable, but so far, no one has made much progress with getting true 2.2 working on it. They released the source for two phones (Acclaim and Intercept) that are very similar to the Moment, but the only community that develops for the phone (SDX) hasn't gotten anything working. It's beyond my skill level, sadly, or I'd try my hand at it.
I'm able to change my phone in April, so I'll probably see what options are available then or coming shortly thereafter.
The droid 2 is a nice phone when it is rooted and you can use it as a mobile hotspot for free if it is rooted, although the droid bionic looks very promissing when it comes out and it has the same tegra 2 processor as the gtablet but it an actually fit in a pocket.
Nexus One running stock 2.2 on t-Mobile with the famous grandfathered 6.99 data plan. Tethering works great. But I've been having issues with the power button not working, so I might finally root it when the warranty runs out so I can assign the power button to the trackball or something.

+1 It was simple to tether a connection between the two (2) devices and it works well.
Google Nexus One on Bell Mobility (i'm a canuckia resident), modded as per my sig. Bestest phone I ever had. I'm planning on getting a Tegra2-based or a Nexus S as soon as those hit Vidéotron in Quebec though.

A Whole New World!

Hey there folks!
I'm a MotoMan myself (mostly by fate, not choice). I had a Droid 1 which I loved dearly, and now I'm rocking a Droid X that feels like a new phone every day thanks to CyanogenMod nightlies.
Now, thanks to Motorola's dickery, the Droid X only recently received CyanogenMod (bootloaders are awful). But as I said now that it's around, things are like night and day. Not quite as awesome as my Droid 1 since there are still no custom kernels, however I'm still a happy camper.
A few days ago however my sister bought herself a Droid Charge to lock in a 2-yr contract of $30/month LTE. Naturally, I immediately snatched it and began ROM'ing the sucker into oblivion. It's great! I love how easy it is to flash this puppy. You either use Odin, which is relatively painless... CWR, which I already spend most of my time in on my DX/Nook Color.... or the Samsung utility, which is no different than RSDlite for Motorola phones! All familiar, painless territory. And it seems like you can get some pretty customized ROMs rockin'!
So, uh... why no CyanogenMod? It seems like a lot of Samsung phones are lacking the CyanogenModz. Is there a piece of the puzzle I'm missing? Has Samsung installed something devious like a bootloader preventing it? What's going on here?
thank!
Cyanogen mods are mostly RUU mods. HTC in fact. I coming from TMO have used dozens and release a few Cyanogen custom roms. Realistically, the team releases code for phones that they can easily acquire. HTC phones are GSM phones and can be bought anywhere for about 100 bucks. VZW and Sprint phones are CDMA phones that are a lil harder to obtain and need a contract with the company. Easier to get GSM phones because you can unlock them for whatever global service you want to use them on.
The team is easy to get in touch with, but you will probably need to get a fan base together on a certain device and send to them, to get them to be able to write the code for. Hope this makes sense.
Barny Style.
GSM = Easy to get, easy to sale, no company crap to deal with
CDMA = Company needs to turn on, hard for resale since you need a clean esn. Harder to acquire.
I'm not a dev, but I think CyanogenMod uses AOSP as a base, not RUUs. It certainly looks a lot more like stock Android on my HTC Incredible than it does Sense.
That said, the point about CDMA phones being less widely available and used than GSM phones is probably a valid one, as CDMA is primarily a US thing. There is a CM port for a few Samsung Galaxy S phones.
The issue is that Samsung uses stuff that is not compatible with most of the stock CM code, and a lot of hacking needs to be done to get anything simple working. I know that there are a few Samsung phones in the pipeline for CM7 support now, but it took months of work, and there are still several bugs that need worked out. The biggest issue is primarily just that Samsung releases as little source as they have to, and trying to reverse engineer their binary files that are needed is difficult to do as well. However, I do think that there will be AOSP based ROMs for the Charge after r2doesinc starts working on it.
As far as I know they could be working on a Droid Charge port:
http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?631-WIP-CM7-for-Droid-Charge
Plus there's more than a few posts in that thread of people saying they'd send in phones for them to dev on. I've never used CM (just got my charge after a first-generation iPhone), but it looks slick as all getout. GummyCHARGED is the closest rom to it as far as I can tell.

[Q] Help me upgrade! (Used Droid, now on Sprint)

Hi I'm looking to replace my current crappy HTC Snap. Its a horrible device. I want to upgrade to another Android device, preferably without 4G. None of the devices seem like an upgrade though, even though its 2009 vs 2011!
I like an active developer community, and a good keyboard. The Droid I enjoyed using since I didn't need to get a case for it and it was just a 'perfect smartphone' even today, if it had a better processor + ram, and if the battery life was better it could easily compete with today's phones.
Droid didn't have a very good keyboard, so far the closest thing is the Evo Shift, I'm fond of the Blackberry style phones too, so the XPRT is worth considering... if it had custom roms I would have gotten it already.
A good battery life would be awesome too. I would love to have a phone that just doesn't need to be charged every day, every other day would be cool or even every 2 days. I am a heavy texter so a good keyboard is almost a must, I didn't mind swype and I like it now, but still love a tactile keyboard.
Thanks!
You mentioned the shift, nice phone, but you need to know that is a 4g phone. I would recommend to stay away from Samsung based on my own and my roommates bad experiences with the moment and epic 4g. I would not get an EVO 4G at this time as the new bootloader is locked preventing root. Most of the newer android devices from Sprint are either 4g or just not worth it. The new EVO 3d has been rooted and would be my choice if you don't care about the extra 10 a month for 4g service. If not, try out the new windows phone 7, It's not 4g and has a keyboard. The new UI is actually sweet. However, the development community is not as big as on android.
I'd recommend going into a Sprint store and trying them all out first before making a decision.

NO ROMS

Thanks to the devs that have supported ROMS so have something to flash ( i dont have much money to give so i made sure and thanked every dev i know as my appreciation) But coming from HTC incredible the selection is few. Everyweek it seemed like there was a ROM coming out on that side of the forums. Over here not so much. Maybe Once a month. Wish we could see new features like GS II, just like the incredible got to taste the all the updated senses roms...sorry for my RANT I just want TOUCH WIZ 4.0 i mean i bought my phone like 3 mothns ago and its outdated...
Can't believe I paid 300 for this junk lol

Many more users and developers with the Incredible. There does however seem to be a slight decline in development altogether in my perception due to the widening variety of Android phones. As the user base gets spread out, so does the development. Be nice if there was one phone from each manufacture every 6 months or longer so a phone could be their flagship for more than a month or two.
i just want CM7.. Humble 4.22 is holding me over for now.. Thanks Danalo.
Cm7 or MIUI would be nice to have but im not holding my breath on seeing pure AOSP on this phone.

[Q] Why no CM7\MiUi roms?

The AT&T SG2 had CM7 and MiUi roms basically on launch day I've notice roms seem to be coming slow on the skyrocket.
Is this because of the different chipsets, Dev Interest, or something else compared to SG2?
(This isn't me complaining I'm just curious , I also noticed no CM7 roms for T-Mobile SG2)
Bump Up My Post count. Also, want answer.
This device is very new. Also There is no international version. Imsure the dev support will increase but gota have patience . Its a totally different device from the sgs2. Just hope more odevs becpme intrested in it. I think once ics is released for.it the dev support will increase. Supposed to be the first at&t device to recieve it

unfortunately, this is the same problem the infuse ran into.... which is why i left...
The SGS2 had it on the international phone, so migrating it was easy. New chip will delay the ROM's on the skyrocket, so be patient

The galaxy s2 lte is the international version of the skyrocket, but the issue is it released at around the same time and is not near as popular as the original gs2.
Our phones are very similar to the tmo GS2, so once they get a cm7 port the skyrocket version shouldn't be far behind.
You should not stick with this phone if you are hoping for a ton of dev support. Frankly, we're lucky to have what we have right now (thanks guys!). This is a one off phone and as such, it's more difficult to port stuff over to it. I consider it highly unlikely that we'll see any Cyanogen or MiUi love on this phone unless portability some how gets easier with ICS.
I'm not huge on installing ROM's just to play with them. I come here more for problem solving on stock + root configs, so this isn't a big deal for me. But I can understand why it's a big turn off to some people.
The ROMS for the Infuse came fairly quickly after the phone was available. Subsequent cooked ROMs then started becoming more stable just about 3-4 months after. Of course, it all depends on the availability of dev support for the SR and hopefully they are coming onboard soon enough.
Then again, if you want *more* than a few ROMs to choose from, then the 'regular' sgs2 may be more up your alley.
I NEED MY STOCK ANDROID BACK... touch wiz is pretty but i went from g1 to n1 to skyrocket and i miss some things
A second line is coming up for upgrade (for the wife) and I have thought about getting/trying out the skyrocket as I have the original att SGS2 and love the rom and dev support. Already testing out the international versions alpha build of ice cream sandwich. But for the wife's phone I don't think I want to mess with it as much though. But it DOES boil down to dev support and roms I guess. Is it really this slow in here? I love my OG SGS2 and even though we will have lte in my area by years end I wont be giving up mine for anything. I got my OG SGS2 two days after launch and at first was excited by the lte version until it was confirmed to have the snapdragon and not the exerynos. So I was glad I stayed.
So my question is has any well known devs jumped into the skyrocket arena yet? The dev section looks kind of lonely right now. I have a month to decide whether to get her a OG SGS2 or the skyrocket so I am in no rush. I saw all the threads and have followed the skyrocket until it was moved out of our sub forum, so I have read all the debates and arguing about the differences between the OG and skyrocket. Haven't been in here for a few weeks now and it looks almost the exact same developer section wise. Other than being rooted have you guys seen any spectacular advancements as we have seen in the OG SGS2? I am NOT in here trolling but just wanted to get all your inputs as well. Are you still glad you went with the skyrocket? Are you glad you didn't just take it back and get a OG SGS2? I know with lte you guys get kick ass download speeds, and in my OG I get 8Mb download and haven't had any issues streaming anything, downloading anything, or visiting any web pages. So is it worth it in your eyes for me to get the skyrocket for the wife? PLEASE only real answers, I am not here for flaming wars or "my device is better because" replies, I am not trying to stir up the emotions I have seen between the two in the past. So again please just your honest and as possible unbiased opinions. Thanks
PS.I posted this here because I run CM7 on my OG SGS2. Not sure if I could give it up though touchwiz on our (both) att SGS's gets the job done. Plus with testing out alpha builds of ICS we are in for a WHOLE change of goodness as long as the ASOP build looks and feels. Unless samsung or att don't ruin it that is.

I would certainly love to see CM7 support for this device. i think it would be tremendous oversight for it to get swept under the table and miss out on CM7.1 + CM9.
I do not see it happening .. i believe it will show up sooner or later.
Patiently holding out on purchasing "ics device." just to "have an ics ROM."
people the phone came out a month ago! i was on the SGSII forum, and we didn't have CM support immediately, it took time patience and DONTATIONS! if no one is donating, please quit crying!! You can always return the device. It is not a good look for those of in the community (irc.irondust.net; #skyrocket) that are either attempting to be a part of the solution. Da_G is looking into a port now. Furthermore, Samsung was sent an email re the release of the source code.
We will see.

Cheers!!!!!
We have to DEMONSTRATE DEMAND. Nothing in life is given, or assumed. At least not in the business world folks!
Instead of a HUGE thread on how to run a TMO ROM on our devices, we could request support instead on the Cyanogenmod thread for OUR device? Just a thought... not a flame
Any Dev will tell you the facts.. if he knows this device, he knows there are more than enough similarities BTW sgh-i727 and tmo sgs II for cyanogenmod to run a simple port. You guys must've not read up much .. this would be cake for those fellas.
If you want it, tell them politely and we will see it!

The Skyrocket will be worth it in the long run, I know we might not have much dev support at the moment but eventually when ICS comes to this phone officially it will grow. I'm running this phone stock at the moment and I LOVE it no lag at all, and mostly I'm loving my 55mbps download speeds down here in Texas (;
Soon hopefully soon i miss me some miui!!

Guys this phone is awesome..it just came out 3 weeks ago.. it already has some nice mods for it .. give it a chance.. Its like a new model car that comes out.. it takes some time for the vendors to R&D .. make a jig.. testing.. etc... to get the performance parts out.. .. I forsee great things with this phone in the very near future..
Have patience!
