So im converting my mom to a thunderbolt from a blackberry, and i was wondering your guys opinion. Of course most people here are goin to prefer the stock android experience compared to the sense. But for a woman who is relatively un-tech savy, would you guys recommend a Vallina Rom or a more stock one closer to the sense experience, for the best user experience?

I bet a very basic user would appreciate the polished sense look. Their widgets look great and serve the basic needs of a user like your mom.

+1, I would have to agree here. I'm biased though, as I have only owned sense phones. Of course, CM is nice and that is what I ran on my eris.

I kinda disagree..I think most of us do prefer Sense over vanilla. (as shown on a recent poll on droidlife too).
Sense not only gained more votes than stock android.. but it also surpassed the competition (like touchwiz and motoblur) by significant numbers.
You will love Sense.
It's all what you like best. Everyone here has their own preference on setups, icons, themes, kernels, roms, etc... Try them both out for a couple days to a week and see which one you like the best, and suits your needs the most.
alright well i guess well my next question would be, do u think das bamf or just a stock debloated one would be best considering user experience is the highest priority. So I guess what im trying to say the one with the least bugs and most stability.

My 2 cents worth.. go with Stock .. for a while at least.. It is fast and stable and you'll see how zippy it is compared to a lot of custom roms. Form your benchmark with stock first and then when you run custom rom's you'll see the improvement/depreciation in speed and response.
I haven't had a single reboot/gps issue after going back to stock.. also when you go to a themed rom, remember that it slows down the "zippiness" unless the kernel is tweaked .. which mean it could be draining your battery more..There is a reason why Sense and a lot of apps are monochromatic for the most part.
there are pros and cons to everything.. you'll have to try it all out and see what you like best.. that's the beauty of android .. you have choices

Second, I personally love my android phones. I don't exactly know why you are having speed issues... have you tried cursorsence? I installed it yesterday and I love it. There should be an overclock app in the market that could increase performance. Past that I'm not too sure of the problem.
If you're using MyHero you might as well sell your phone to someone smarter.
Im tired of thinking there are people like you in the world that think everything they want is the way it is. Spoiled little brats like yourself who know nothing of anything outside your little world where your handed everything in life or you cry and make everyone aware of it so you get the attention.
So.. your tired of not knowing what your doing when everyone else seems tobe fine? Well, were tired of people like you coming into our forums to whine about things that make no sense and to demand things completely outlandish.
Noone here is here for YOU. So please.. I beg you, find a new hobby, because this one seems a bit to high out of your reach. Maybe try coloring books?
Oh.. and you say the touch keyboards are so slow... You do understand that "predictive text" doesnt mean it knows what you are going to type before you do right? lol

How exactly is the world tired of people who don't like overrated products? Maybe the world is tired of people like you who love mediocrity. It is literally impossible for you people to not have speed issues. Every single person here has complained about it so dont make it seem like you "figured it all out". Even brand new android phones are reviewed as slow. And having the solution to root your phone to make it at a tolerable speed isnt acceptable for buying a phone for $500.

What he means is no body force you to get this device.
If there is something else you like better go get it and leave this place.
I don't even want to begin guessing what "Even brand new android phones are reviewed as slow" means. Because if you're reffering to the Droid and Nexus One you could not be ANY FARTHER from the truth.
You have no facts, you say rooting is the only way to speed up a phone which is clearly wrong.
Why would people want to rip you a new one. You're a troll.
I agree in some way with you aotiko, fortunately my magic only cost's me 170€ without any contract otherwise for 500$ i had gone for an iphone.
typing some times is reallt slow, i'm on the snd word and the android is still writing the first (i'm now using the 2.1 and it is much better).
multi touch sucks, multi tasking is horrible because everything gets slower! (this was on my original 1.5, 2.1 i'm using since today so I still don't have an opinion)
keyboard is not as precise as iphone is (better on 2.0 too, the vibrate on is working much better).
battery life isn't worst but it is not good.
And what bugs me is that apple with a cpu with same velocity as magic done a f*cking fast phone with the 3gs! even with multi tasks on after jailbreak is is much faster, and as I've said CPU have the same speed as magic!
What hct and all other brands do is just increasing cpu speed, don't worry about sW optimisation and that is not good.
It looks like what intel and AMD done in the past in the pentium generation, more cpu clock, better. And it finally come to an end when problems with heat and stuff like that appear.
In the overall I still like my magic, but I won't if i had paid 500$!
just my 2 cents
aotiko said:
I have an HTC Magic 32A and i'm sick of it. It's so slow I don't even like using it anymore. I try all the roms that people claim are "EXTREMELY FAST!!!" and they are STILL slow. The scrolling on text messages, in a browser, or even in menus is very jittery. Android users are always ripping on iphones how they can't multitask until you jailbreak them but people root android phones to make them usably fast which isn't even that helpful. I don't see how I can possibly be doing anything wrong. Does everyone here secretly not enjoy their phones and that's why they are always here to find a ROM that they can actually use? I tell everyone I love it but I really don't. The keyboard is always behind in typing, even in a store on a brand new phone. It really seems like Google released android in a very very very early beta stage just so they won't fall behind in market share.

Yes people are entitled to their opinion. But when someone comes here criticizing the work of these wonderful devs and making baseless arguments. They should leave.
Get an iPhone, and don't come back here. Simple as that.
I hope you are not talking about me!
I've not critized any one's work! we have were underfull devs no doubts about that!
but people can say what do work good and don't.
Most speed problems are not related to the devs but actually to the SO.
so please read carfully before start complaining.

as i've said I love my android but for me iphone 3gs is faster with no doubts (NOT said better)
i will try my hero rom, as my girlfriend's hero with original rom, rotates faster, zoom faster than my 2.1 eclair rom.

Hi, can someone explain exactly what Cyanogen mods are all about? Are they the premium development and what makes them special? Sorry for such a simple question but I am relatively new to the Android scene Thanks.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CyanogenMod
try it and decide for yourself if you like it.
I only had my Nexus s for 48 hours....I will have to build up to flashing a ROM, I am rooted though I wanted to know how the real terms performance is different when running Cyanogen.
Cyanogen historically is the best of the best custom ROM with tons of extra, very useful features. Cyan on my nexus one is just awesome and brings so many extra things needed.
performace difference.....not much with the nexus s so far...I use it for the extra features. dropdown bar widgets, two slider lockscreen, incogneto mode in the browser, and other such tweaks. I have used it for so long that i forget what is different about it until i go back to a stock firmware....then i realize why i like it so much. but that's me. The nexus s is nice because it doesn't have another skin on it. i'm just not a fan of them. CM is essential for me on the incredible and my evo. i don't care how much people praise sense i just don't like it. i had a g1 then a nexus one.....sense was fun when it was called rosie and was released on the g1 as an alternate theme....even then it slowed things down.
edit: if anyone says they get 200 more points in quadrant benchmarks that isn't a real world performace increase. you can't feel 200 points....now the ext4 enhancements, those you can feel.
Thank you for all your replies, very useful. I will be sure to try Cyanogen when I have the confidence to make the switch

It's pretty much going from Froyo to Gingerbread... barely anything different just little noticeable things. Point is I wouldn't get your hopes up about the quality of 3.0.

You are mistaken at what I am saying. This is not sense bashing. THis is stating that the improvement to sense is lackluster after such a long time between updates. I like sense and have always been a supporter of it. My point is sense 3.0 is not a big jump over 2.1 and definitely not enough to make me want to buy a new phone just because it has 3.0.
Both articles I read eliminated the debate on Sense Vs. Touchwiz Vs. blah blah blah. It was purely a review on the merit of the update.

This. BGR would lower the score to a 2/5.
I've run plenty of Sense roms as far back as the old Hero roms on my G1, Sense 3.0 doesn't fundamentally change the ui, but it does add quite a bit of features that improve it, from the active lockscreen to the notification toggles for wifi/bluetooth/etc. I'm really liking Virtuous Fusion.

I just had to chime in here for a min. I have a sensation and my wife has a mt4g. New sense and old sense. The differences are big enough. Just set them side by side and look.
There is no point to petition for Sense 3.0
The Stock ROM is Laggy and couldn't believe I used it for 3 months before unlocking/Rooting my phone.
There are better options Virtuous ROM is Sense 3.0 and can't wait to see Virtuous Unity.
Personally I actually like 2.1 Sense (minus the lagg), just miss it. Sense 3.0 just feels way too different and was a bit let down. It actually turned me off from getting the Sensation.
The new devs on the Virtuous is really exciting and can't wait to see what they cook up.

Vanilla Android for the win.
I have been reading over the Sensation forum and it appears to have even more bugs than the G2X. What the hell are these manufacturers doing? Also, has anyone seen the video reviews of the Sensation. Theres no reason for all that lag in a high end Android device these days. Our G2X appears much faster.
Lastly, it looks as if HTC really **** the bed with the new version of Sense. Samsung has made positive changes to TouchWiz over the last year while Sense has done nothing but add useless eye candy that hogs up system resources. TouchWiz is now the least intrusive manufacture UI and I applaud Samsung for toning it down.
The Sensation is definitely off of my wish list now. Glad I went with the G2X and possibly the SGSII.
People like sense because it looks easy and pretty. Stock android does not look pretty in comparison. The average user does not care about system resources.
A majority of the people do not buy a g2 for stock android they got it for a keyboard. Most people did not get a g2x for stock android they got it for a larger screen and maybe dual core goodness because it sounds good. Most buyers don't care about quadrant scores and custom roms they want fast large pretty looking eye candy and Facebook.
I'd bet the number of users on this site don't even account for half of 1% of the total android users worldwide.

I think most phones out now have nearly as many issues being complained about on the forums. I haven't noticed any major lag in sensation vids except a couple where they show it being booted up. Every phone I've owned so far had had at least SOME lag to it, especially when booting.
Except for the 1gb of useable internal storage, I really like the phone. My wifes mt4g and my old g2 didn't have much of an issue with that much space.

I have to agree with the post above. I didn't get the phone for vanilla android. I got it for dual core power, the 8mp camera with autofocus and flash, the 4 inch screen, and HDMI out. like I said, the hardware is so polished, but the software is not. and some stuff out there doesn't even work right, like the toggle widgets on beautiful widgets.
thats what people keep saying but

i hear this less than 1/2 of 1% all the time. i find it hard to believe that htc would come out and say they are opening bootloaders to please 1/2 of 1% of users.
while this may be true with all android phones i think this % is low for the g line of tmobile phones. and other high tech ones.
I agree though many like sense because its pretty. thats why there are so many copycat clock/weather apps out so we can get it without the rest of the bloat.
i havent had a phone with any of them coming from the droid to the g2x both stock.
but from everything i have read it seems that the only one i see with complaints of causing serious lag with the phones is motoblur.

That's highly amusing - our "outdated" Tegra 2 phones running a whole 200MHz slower than the Sensation and Evo 3D - spank the hell out of both and that's not even with Gingerbread...
I have to disagree with the ideas here. I bet a large percentage of iPhone users are jailbroken.
Same with android. I know so many people with androids now and I've been asked if I can root and flash an updated rom for them.
These are random house wives and joe smoes. Android is known for its customization and people take advantage of that.
As far as the sensation, I wrote it off my list a while ago. Too many negatives with just hardware specs let alone what software bugs are found. Still no root or unlocked bootloaders.
I'm following the sgs2 and they seem to be making some headway. Root and custom CWM kernels. I don't think they have much on the custom roms yet. Ouch though, their methods are complicated ones. Seems like a pain.
I don't think I'd trade my G2x for a SGS2 but it would be a first choice if the G2x was magically unavailable.

I got this phone because I knew I can do so much to it, I can't lie the UI setting HTC offers is nice but I look for more than the interface and such, Iam interested in the processor, the advantages of the rooting process, and the speed of the phone. Besides we can still make our phones look nice with custom roms and themes so Iam happy with my g2x

In all reality, there aren't that many issues. Minor screen bleed and wonky battery driver. As long as you the screen bleed isn't bad, the phone is pretty solid. The battery driver is being fixed by the great devs over in the Android Development section.
At least the GPS isn't worthless, or the cellular screwed up, or the bootloader encrypted, or limited touch screen multi-touch.
When put into perspective other other phones and their issues, the G2x is a pretty solid phone. Nothing a little polish from XDA can't make shine.

Well I love HTC Design and build quality since the HTC Touch Diamond back in 2007/8.
Also February of this year when I got the Inspire there weren't many android options on AT&T. I wasn't getting the outdated Aria or Captivate, I hated the current iteration of Motoblur on the Atrix, and I didn't like Touchwiz 3 on the Infuse that had yet to come out. Best option for me at the time was the Inspire because I couldn't take the iPhone anymore.
I just happen to not be a big fan of U/I skins in general - aside from the new Touchwiz 4.

Well like stated before, if you don't like sense getting an HTC phone was not your best choice however since you made the choice and lucky for you the Inspire has a lot of development, you're not totally boned since you don't like the stock sense feel. Again, I recommend and stand by any of the Collective team's work (Absolution and BBmod). MIUI is nice too but reminds me of an iPhone too much so if I really wanted that type of look, I would have gotten an iPhone (not trying to insult anyone, just my opinion so any of the MIUI fans take exception to that, sorrrrry!!) Best bet try all of the AOSP ROMs and decide for yourself which one you like the most!
Isn't the point of android being able to create your own environment that suits you? Isn't that why we have such a bevvy of ROMs to choose from? I'm on the same boat with the OP, loving HTC's build quality but sense doesn't suit me 100%. I've just recently re-installed LauncherPro and I'm enjoying the environment much better.

Yet you recommend ROMs that strip sense from the phone. Why didn't you just get a Nexus phone?
I'd say that Touchwiz has more in common with the look/feel of an iPhone than MIUI has by far. MIUI has a very nice, clean feel to it and adds a lot of elements of customization to the table. I really enjoyed using it while I had my old Captivate, more so than CM7. Right now I'm enjoying Android Revolution + LauncherPro since this offers the most flexibility for my use. I'd say try out MIUI and see if you like it.
Off subject but you sir have an awesome Avatar! CoCa!

Here is a link to Miui locker. It has several lock screens. Puzzle for sure. I bet it has the touch wiz lock. Have not searched far enough...but you can

*sigh* NO. TOUCHWIZ, just like any other manufacturer UI, IS CLOSED-SOURCE. IN OTHER WORDS. NO.

My good friend, I think you've misread or misunderstood what I was going at. The OP states he doesn't like sense. My obvious step in logical thinking is, "why get a sense based phone then?" I mean follow your own advice and tell the OP to get a nexus prime since he has explicitly stated he doesn't much like sense.
You're right I do recommend to him CM7 based ROMs because he has stated he doesn't like sense. Why would I advocate or recommend sense based ROMs to a user who has stated he doesn't like sense. I don't mind sense, I actually enjoy the U.I. I don't like that its a resource hog though. So I use CM7 based ROMs, not out of distaste for sense ROMs, just out of lack of customization in most of the sense based ROMs. From time to time I do use sense based ROMs ( BD or ARHD). I've just gotten to know the devs and users of the collective and have a hard time leaving them. Great guys/girls and some of the friendliest people you're gonna meet on XDA.
Like I said, my opinion on MIUI, if you took exception..nothing I can do there friend. That's an inner struggle you'll have to square away. MIUI is a great ROM, never said it wasn't, just reminds me of an iPhone. Plan and simple. My opinion. You're entitled to yours.
