You wouldn't...most custom ROM's don't want Verizon OTA updates. This is basically a re-release of the updated radios (402w_1 and 605.7) so if you've already updated your radios that's basically what you'd be getting from VZW. The question is did they actually do anything to the radios or did they just hold them while they got their LTE/eHRPD issues sorted out (I tend to lean on the latter.)

If you wanna keep root, I wouldn't recommend updating. Let the devs release it.

I would just hold off and wait until the devs get ahold of it. It might not be any different from the leaked update we have already.

The leak (if we're talking about jcase's leak) included the ROM where the OTA update doesn't (at least it doesn't appear to at 35 MB.) It does appear to be larger than just the leaked radios themselves (25.37 MB) but they updated a few other things so that probably accounts for the additional 10 MB.
We really aren't going to know anything until the devs tackle the update.zip.

I was recommended by jcase that you either can't or should not apply this update if rooted. Don't quote me though. I can't remember exactly what he said.

Thats completely true.

Do you need root to access the cache folder? Where is it exactly. Can't find it while connected to my computer by USB, or by ES File Explorer.

Could this also incorporate removal of free wifi hotspots? Isn't that ending soon? When I bought my Thunderbolt the rep told me it'd be removed via a software update in May.

Pretty sure that's only for new customers. Existing customers were grandfathered into the free wifi. I might be wrong though. I remember the rep told me something about it too when I got my TB in the mid of April.

Your rep was wrong. Once they figure out how much to charge, the free hotspot will be no more.

Saw on android police a couple of phones that were rooted attempted the update and it didn't go so well. One phone said update failed, another screwed their phone up. I'll wait.

When your rooted, your not supposed to update with OTA's. Wait for the devs to upload it...

OTA's are for squares.

Iif you're running a custom ROM, you'll most likely NOT get an update. The developer will incorporate the changes into the next ROM update.

lol i cant wait im downloading it now and will add root / busybox to it my self
this shouldn't remove the free hotspot verizon will not have to push a update to remove it they can turn it off on the back end just how the turn it on and off if you call them and add the tethering plan

Updated Hero software (Software – 2.31.651.7) 9/22

Looks like they are releasing an update to our Hero's.....don't get to excited it just bug fixes but better than nothing.
Source Link:

I wonder if there is much of a performance boost for those running stock derived 2.1 ROMs?
At least we know Sprint isn't ignoring us. It'll take a lot for me to go back to stock, though. Do we know if this will kill your root access like the last update did?

Awfully vague description they've provided about today's update. But, not surprising coming from Sprint...
Has HTC posted any elaborations on their website?

anyone able to update yet?
The rom-makers will be able to integrate this into their roms, right? I'll just wait for the updated roms to come out.
When I click the link all it takes me to is the sprint information on the update... the link on the sprint page takes me to the 2.27.651.6 Ruu download... Sprint is so lame.... Why post an update if your website hasn't made it available??

If you update you will lose it all. The update (in your case) should come from infiniteFX, especially since he was one of the earlier proponents of building off of the .6 versus .5 build.

anyone get prompted for the update yet? i keep probing but comes up nothing...
If I could get a hold of this I would gladly try it, i can't get it over the air or online. I've installed darchstar's S-OFF hboot and it persisted through 2 runs of the 2.27.651.6 RUU, so not having root wouldn't worry me.
to hell with sprint, im pissed about this update. we didn't need it, what we needed was a sense froyo. what a waste of a good opportunity.
I find it interesting that they give different reasons for the update for each different phone. I ruued back to stock .5 kernel and did the .6 update and will adb pull the update off my hero if I get it. In case anyone gets it the update is stored in /cache. You'll probably already know this but you can download it and not apply it.
Anyone know if there is a new radio in this update?

[UPDATE 11.22]2.32.651.2-rootable!! + info-

2.32.651.2 is available. I got a new hero today and updated OTA to the new software. then I applied this root method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
ive been deleting much bloat. the update has a new baseband, new software, new PRI. kernel is the same. im sure theres more that i dont know about.
This update makes it feel fast and responsive. To me-a little smoother than the last .7 official.

sorry i can't tell you one or the other; however, i was curious why you're jumping on a hero instead of something like the lg optimus s which is cheaper and has gotten great reviews?
one obvious negative of picking another device is that the community isn't quite there for it yet, but... i know it is rooted at least.
also, if it's a matter of price, two of my brothers ordered their evo's from this site:
http://ordersprint.cellbenefits.com/ind/sprint/devices.html
the prices seem unreal, to be honest. but it might be worth looking at what they have available. much cheaper than direct from sprint and the lg ends up being $50 in your pocket after contract, rebates, and/or giftcards.
anyway, just a thought. i do love my hero, but this late in the game, i'd be looking to snag a slightly more modern device. or, maybe you could find one to buy from people in the forum. i know a lot of people have been upgrading recently (i'm up in a week or so, but plan to wait until after ces before i buy a new phone).
sorry for the off-topic question!

Any way to get the update other than OTA?

I have finished rooting the new update and I can say that the SuperOneClick method works as well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Rom Manager went on fine too.
Edit: My bad, I lost root after booting. I will try your root method. Sorry
Getting the S-off again is now trickier due to the new radio baseband.
why not pull the update off your phone change the script a little sign and flash through recovery
so the new update is worth keeping? I was planning on rooting my device to get the wifi sharing option that 2.2 has but i wasn't thinking and let the new ota update go through the other day. the only difference i've seen is more lag and more battery usage. opinions?
The only way to get WiFi sharing on the hero is through rooting the hero does have a native usb tether but u have to pay for any data u use on it

Yep, thats the pre-lim update that came a week or so ago (for me anyway) I installed it and actually my InFuse felt a bit speedier but it didn't break my root or anything either. So I'd say go for it (at your own risk of course) mileage may vary.
It's the UCKH1 baseband update and possibly bootloader update aswell.
I tried playing by the rules and using this updated version for about 3 days. Battery life was horrible. I had to switch to my N86 halfway through the day so it could charge V_V I would recommend getting infused. It's so much better than stock. So. Much. Better.

No. Verizon's own custom OE1 is the reason that it's not rootable. Once you have the OE1 Kernel or higher, you cannot root unless they find another exploit. I doubt they will considering it's an older phone that's already being phased out in terms of support.

Take it back. You have a "new" phone that basically has no support for it anymore. If you have something to use currently other than the S5, I'd consider waiting till the new Google Nexus 5 or 6 2015 edition coming out this year. That should have root and an unlocked bootloader (Google wouldn't stand for Verizon locking down their phone).

You would have to find a phone you like, go to that forum, and check. I believe any phone with an unlocked bootloader can always be rooted? And I'm pretty sure the Google nexus 5/6 (the old ones) will always be rootable.
I'm jumping ship from Samsung (I wanted to move to the Note at one point, but Samsung screwed up big time with their phones trying to make it like an iPhone, and with Samsung/Verizon in bed with locking up root/bootloader).

There's a search bar at the top of XDA where you can enter a device. It also allows you to specify which carrier as well. This is from the M9 forum. Says you need a JAVA card which is expensive, but it unlocks the phone/allows root. You can also donate (usually $20-60) users to do it for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...t-s-off-how-root-s-off-verizon-m9-20-t3123178
I have no idea about the M8, seems to be the same, have to have S-OFF or whatever the heck that means. Do research yourself if you want the phone.

Follow the instructions in muniz_ri's thread. He hasn't released the deodexed version though. You should never take ota when rooted, and you should actually have it disabled as soon as you root. One user reported that they ota updated without losing root, but I'd never recommend it.
There is no benefit in disabling it. You have to authorize any update, so it cannot overwrite it on its own. The only reason to disable it is the popup after an update comes out which can be stopped by deleting the update.zip then having the install fail.
Two or three updates ago, I lost the ability to rotate my screen unless an app forces it to rotate, now with this update my phone no longer reads sd cards, and in fact boot loops if there is one inserted. I've done a lot of searching, both when the initial problem manifested, and now with the new problem, but haven't seen anyone with a fix. Any suggestions?
