Q. Can you turn your phone into a wifi router? - General Questions and Answers

Im traveling this summer and am going to be in a area without wifi but with wired internet. Is there anyway for me to get internet to my phone using a usb cable from a computer and then transmitting that connection?

wait, internet from your phone to a wifi signal right?

Doubtful, I remember on my old WinMo 5 you could do that but I don't think you can do that on any device now. What you could do is get a wifi card for your computer (if you don't already have one), put your card in what is known as ad-hoc mode, and share your internets from there. If you need help, google it, there are plenty of guides online how to do it for Windows, mac, and linux.

USB Pass-through?

HTC phones have always had the option to have internet pass-through where the phone would use the computer's internet connection to get online... I don't see this anywhere for the Captivate. Is this possible?
Like, reverse usb tethering?
Mannnn...I read a thread about this a long long time ago. Its around here somewhere.

Exactly. I used to do it with my Inspire all the time but I lost the bottom piece for that phone so I can not do that. "3G" in my area is 200kbps max... I need to update my phone but I can't do wifi because my phone doesn't pick up the wifi (I'm over 400 feet from the house) - having a reverse USB tethering option would be great. I have tried VirtualRouter and it just flat out will not broadcast the wifi from my laptop so I don't know what to do.

It doesn't work...I am on a mac running os x 10.6.8, i think usb tether only works for PC. I've tried adding the device as a modem in my networking preferences but still not working. Don't know if I have the right settings. I am on ATT.

Oh sorry, I don't use mac so I have no idea how to set that up. Works good on my pc, though.
Ok thanks. Are you getting the same speeds on your PC as you are on your phone?

I haven't speed tested my pc since I got the skyrocket. I am living out of a hotel right now for work.
EDIT: What are you wanting me to test? My wifi phone speed vs. my comp speed on the same wifi network? Or my comp speed while using it tethered to my phone?
The answer is yes wifi tether will give you slower speeds than the speed on the phone... The same reason direct connection ethernet is faster than wifi

Yea I wanted you to see your computer speed while tether to the phone. However, I was able to find an app called EasyTether and finally got usb tether to work on my mac. I am getting 12mb/s down and 5mb/s up on my laptop using usb tether now!!

Free wifi

when I am in the states I can connect to all the free wifi spots in airports and i can connect to the web thru them. but when I am over seas I cannot connect to the available free networks. it shows i am connected and have an ip address but i cant actually connect to the web and i can't d/l my email. i have tried everything i can think of and in fact when I had my Iphone, i had no issues connecting to the exact same networks
i am on the AT&T unlimited data plan grandfathered in from my iphone days
this issue existed when the phone was completely stock also.
can anybody shed some light on this?

I probably do not know enough about this, but maybe deleting your wifi past history will help. Maybe changing roms to a newer one then the old infused would help also, idk if that would help though.

The problem is within the DNS server IP from wherever the wifi source is coming from. Theres types of wifi that interact differently than actual wifi internet, and they dont actually grant internet access. I could be wrong but im almost positive that is the issue.
Just as an example of what im trying to say. I have a wireless printer. When i open my wifi networks it pops up as a selectable wifi. I connect to it. Get an ip and everything but the printer cant produce a DNS server IP for internet access.

It might say free, but might not be really. I was in London, Frankfurt and Paris, and though it says its open and everything, it actually needs you pay and register.
From all I know, it connects, but none of the apps except browser works. And when you try to open anything in browser, it takes you to their internal page and asks to pay and things like that.
Maybe you need to check out from the source which hosts the WiFi to check out what it needs.

it is free... as i stated in my OP, i had no problems with my iPhone. The only difference now is the phone and any settings that AT&T may have changed when i change from the iphone to the Infuse (they are telling me that nothing has changed). I have also talked to the service provider and my travelling companions, who use the service with no probs (they all use iphones)
i will be going back there tomorrow. i am wondering if there are any settings on my phone that i can change to try to get this to work, because i have exhausted all other options.
anyone else?

Sorry, I guess I missed that point in your post.
idk dude. As diablo mentioned I would poke around your browser a bit. In France, hitting anything that Orange sponsored, (essentially their ATT I learned with time), I was able to get a little button that gave me wifi free for 15 minutes. Other than that maybe try asking someone that got on! Idk. That might work. If you speak the language. Good luck man. It is there! Just find it.

well... i have made back to the states and i found that the wifi network in question is just way too overloaded... if you have a laptop then its hit or miss... if you have a mobile device then your s.o.l.
back in my iphone days i guess the wifi network in question didnt get as much traffic.
the wifi network is the only free wifi in Dubai airport. it is called Maxspot.
i am confident it isnt just my phone... everybody was having the same issues.

Wait...didnt you just say your companions didnt have the same problem, but now you say everyone had the same problem??? Lol were they messing with you ?
anyways at least your back home with wifi/unlimited data...and i agree...in crowded networks the mobile devices get kicked out first
And last for your above question about att changing something...there is no chane att can make that would effect you phone...all they provide is phone service...as in calls, sms, and data...they dont provide wifi so they cant stop it or block it.

Dial-up Via Infuse

I have a bit of an odd question and I have searched google and the forums. So stright to the point I want to know if it would be possible to connect the samsung infuse directly to a laptop or computer via data cable and then use an app or settings in a way that would allow me to dial out to a server and make establish a connection on the computer using the phone. More or less what the title says would it be possible to connect my computer to a dial-up network using my samsung infuse with a data cable.
Would be sweet.

I have also wondered about this. I work on NEC buisness telephone systems. I can actually program a phone switch using the web browser on my phone. But some of the older phone systems only utilize an analog connection. Of course now at my house we only have our cell phones now and no POTS lines. So in order to connect to those systems from my house, I would love to be able to use the cell phone in conjunction with the laptop. I feel your pain bro.
I'm not sure, but I think it's more of a computer issue than the phone. Need some sort of weird network connection.
Great question, I'm glad you asked.
So dial-up on the laptop, and you want to use that dial-up connection on the infuse?

I'm talking about using the phone to provide dial tone to the laptop. I think that's what were talking about. Now I'm confused.

pc to shield question

When they say you need a gtx600 or above and a wifi setup and that the streaming is local I assume we can run the pc through our router right? The connection doesn't have to be directly from the pc to the shield does it? I'd rather not have to buy a wireless card for my desktop.
Thats how I took it. They never mentioned needing a wifi card on your pc.
in general streaming uses specific paths within windows/pc and your router to get to other devices. normally just about anything network based is either/or. however it gets a lot more complicated when you are trying to share between more then one router. im pretty sure it will be both. but if one was to be restricted, i think it would be wired only, and wireless wouldn't work.

Only need to share a router. So unless you have some really crazy home network setup, it'll work.
Oh, and I believe the requirement is GTX 650 or above, not 600.
Guess I have some crazy LAN setup then, because I don't have a router.

If you're directly connecting all your machines straight to the internet with no NAT, that is a crazy (and fairly unsafe) network setup. These days, most internet providers have a built in router and often Wi-Fi access point in the device they provide you.

My DSL modem (one port) has NAT, a firewall, and dhcp. After that I have 2 switches, a wifi ap and computers.

The DSL model is acting as a router (with NAT support), albeit a 2-port one (one on the DSL side, one on your network side). This is similar to my work setup.
