Until a couple days ago, I had a rooted O.G. Droid running Cyanogenmod 7 and I LOVED it. But it fell into a bowl of water, so that's that.
Now I have the option to either use insurance to replace the Droid with a refurbished (*ugh*) Droid for about $100, or use my upgrade and get a Droid 2 for $150 (Droid 2 being, for some reason, the only phone currently available from Verizon with a physical keyboard).
My problem is, my wife has a Droid 2 and I hate, hate, oh my god I HATE Blur. I personally think it basically breaks Android with its lousy design.
Now, this could be fixed with a custom ROM (maybe even just a new launcher?), but I have been researching and I can't tell what the deal is with Droid 2 Roms. I'm gathering there is a locked bootloader, but roms are available. I'm not clear what that means, exactly. Like, in what way does a locked bootloader affect the ability to flash roms, etc.
I'm having a hard time making a decision, here. I'm not thrilled about a Droid 2, but it's only $50 more than a refurbished Droid. That said, maybe I should spend $100 on a refurbished Droid now and save my upgrade for a phone I actually want? But if Blur can be removed from the D2 fairly easily, maybe it's fine.
Please, anyone with Droid/Droid 2 experience, share your opinions. Thanks all!
Really? No one wants to help me out here? I didn't think it was a dumb question, but alright. I suppose I'll go for the D2 and hope for the best.
Go for the D2, not a bad phone keyboard is waaayyyyy better. I'm sure you could root and customize it too your liking. I would go for touch only but if you prefer the keyboard might as well go faster.
I owned a D2 but ended up getting an incredible because of the bootloader issue. I also detest blur and flashed roms/themes to hide it basically. As far as smartphone functionality, its a fine phone but I wanted to be able to totally customize my phone (radios, kernels, roms, etc). There is a small amount of development but its just really up to you as far as how much control you want to have over your phone. Definitely no cyanogen on the D2

Thanks for the replies, guys! I think I'm going to go with the D2 and do my best to nullify Blur, per k_nivesout suggestion, until another upgrade comes my way.
I like customizing and installing Roms, kernels and whatnot, but I suppose as long as I can tone Blur down, I'll be happy enough with the D2 for a year or so. Really, I just wish VZW would release a vanilla Android phone already. Annoying!
Thanks again for sharing your opinions. The fact Verizon customers like myself need even to contemplate passing up an upgrade just to avoid Blur should make VZW think twice about the value of Blur.
I had the org droid as well and it was an ok phone but as far as the d2 being the only phone with a physical keyboard that is untrue. The droid pro has a physical keyboard that kicks butt it is far and away better that the d2 imo the screen is smaller and not great however and there is no cm7 either but i threw launcher pro on it to hide blur mostly and I really like the phone for the most part. You should be able to get it for $50 CPO thats what I did and im not sorry. I think it is a great phone for some people. BUT there is zero xda support for this phone you can root it tho you will still be on froyo (coming from cm7 meh its fine). anyhow I like this phone and would love to hear that its doesnt die completly obscure. DO NOT get the d2
driod 2 all the way bro!
I had to make a decision tonight, so I went with the D2. I think if I root and replace the launcher, it will resolve most of my major issues. Though I'm going to miss Gingerbread on the O.G.
Yamjoker, you're right I forgot about the pro. I checked it out, but I guess I dismissed it due to the small screen. I have to say the keyboard is delicious on the Pro but yeah, I prefer a larger screen.
Thanks for sharing, everyone.
You can still do some fun stuff with the d2, I would recommend liberty rom, its really quite good for not being a "custom" rom. I also ran the gingerbread leaks for a little bit and its not too bad if you use a different launcher (I liked ADW w/ minimalist theme). Unfortunately the d2 section here is pretty dead, definitely check out www.droidforums.com for the latest. Good luck!

Just wanted to post a quick update. The Droid 2 with Liberty 2.0.1 suits me just fine. Even stepping back from Gingerbread, I'm quite happy. I can see now where the locked bootstrap is more restrictive, but I've found the trade off of customization vs sheer power over my Droid 1 is a fair one for now.
Btw @ k_nivesout, I think you meant to point me to droidforums.net (rather than .com). It's a great resource so thanks for that.
That's right, its .net! Sorry, I was typing from my phone and spaced that out. Glad liberty on the d2 is working well for you, don't get me wrong, I love CM7 on my incredible but I was pretty pleased (visually at least) with my previous liberty 1.5/adw ex setup.

So what's a better buy, since I am confused and conflicted as to what to get.
Motorola Milestone or Nexus One/Desire?
I actually have no clue, its confusing to think which one and every time I think I decide I go back to the middle.
And I know that for the Nexus One, this website has one strong modding front behind it, but I have no idea where, if any, modding movement exists for the Droid, since I haven't found anything on this forum.
What are your thoughts on it?

I personally have the N1 and also have T-mobiles "droids" aka cliqs... Htc is far better when it comes to hardware. I suggest the N1!
In my experience - if I want to get google/android updates ASAP I would only go with whatever google choses to sleep with (stock i.e. without any skin)
For GSM that would be the Nexus One.

Aha no Droid love? Is there a site dedicated to Droid mods like this has a section for Nexus development as well?

nope, moto is lacking in the game... plus nexus isnt a branded phone... its a HTC/GOOGLE not a T-mobile/AT&T/Sprint/V-word phone that should be enough to go by in your choice...
I'm also kind of in a boat like this one. I have a G1 and desperately want to upgrade. I'm considering the EVO since Austin has a 4G tower here. The prices and plans are attractive too. The one thing holding me back however is the hotspot feature in froyo. Sprint will almost certainly cut this feature out of the froyo update for the EVO since they want to charge 30 bucks a month to use that. I'm wondering if there will be a version of froyo from cyanogen (or the many other developers out there) for the evo to circumvent this (not to mention to get rid of the Sense UI).
This isn't any easier a decision to make now aha.
I vote for Motorola milestone
considering its hardware keyboard
I have a Milestone and the hardware keyboard is useful, but I don't like the way Motorola have locked down the bootloader.
That means that even when rooted, we are limited in what can be hacked about!
I will be getting rid of the Milestone and getting a Desire soon if that tells you anything.

I see what you mean, well I've put in a few offers to some used N1s, my local shop stopped carrying them!!!
If you do not have any need for a hardware keyboard N1 will be better beause of the faster CPU.
If you like hardware keyboards like me you will forget about N1.
There are quite a few forums with support for the Droid/ Milestone.
Depends on the kind of work you want to do. If all you want is a shiny super modded device with great screen contrast (excluding touchscreen response) and speed and early updates, get Nexus One.
If you need to do a lot of typing and/or need better screen response, get Milestone.
While milestone doesn't have a dedicated community behind it, doing lots of rom porting, most of the useful N1 mods work on it. Also, it is a very solid and well built phone. The build quality compared to nexus one is equally good, if not better. You can also get it overclocked to about 1.2GHz which makes it run superfast, if you are worried about speed.
How do you guys like your new thunderbolt, is it better then your rooted droid 1.2ghz custom rom switching beast?
Sell me please cause i think its time i should get a new phone, this one looks promising but i need some help from you guys.

Blows my OG droid out of the water. The Droid 1 is severely lacking RAM and internal memory department for modern versions of android and apps. Overclocking into the stratosphere an an ARM7 architecture chip will only get you so far...
Yes the thunderbolt is miles away better than the OG droid,
I came from a rooted Droid. Last ROM on the Droid was Peter Alfonso's gingerbread ROMS.
As great as the OG Droid was, it doesn't hold a candle to the Thunderbolt. Fast doesn't even cover the speed of this phone and if you live in an area with 4G it's hard to conceive Internet as fast as VZ 4G
Also, coming from stock Android, I was pleasantly surprised by Sense and how easy it is to customize. I might be in thee minority, but I like the HTC messaging app/widgets so much, I don't even use Handcent anymore.
Also, the screen is nothing short of beautiful and responsive. I like my Thunderbolt more and more everyday. When we finally get Skype I will be over the moon.
I did and am loving it. It's so much faster and having a lot of RAM really gets you far. Also, I've been pretty impressed by Sense.

I Had an OG Droid for a bit (Among other phones) , Thunderbolt faster/Better gaming/ Front Camera/ Bigger Screen/ 4g/ the List goes on...
i love my og droid, but im not looking back. the thunderbolt is a beast and i'm very happy with it...even without the keyboard I thought I'd miss so much...only gonna use the droid if I get rid of the TB while I wait for something newer..
I'm coming from a rooted OC'd to 1.25GHz OG Droid. The Droid was a great phone and I had lots of fun with it... but the low amount of memory was starting to cause issues.
The Thunderbolt is immeasurably faster. Everything is smooth and everything just happens instantly. No redraw issues ... the home screen just loads up right when I hit the home button.
I thought sense was pretty neat when I first got the phone, but I'm happy to have root so that I can get an AOSP ROM on this thing as soon as they start coming out. Maybe you'll be the same, maybe not. But you do have the choice
My recommendation: Get it on a one year contract. Tons of exciting things happening in the near future with phones. Next year we'll (maybe) have quad core phones with high DPI screens and better battery life.

Thats what i think i'm going to do, and yes im going to root... I played with the phone and sense, its okay. But i'm going to remove it and have a nice stock feel as to when i got my droid, then its time for the fun.
Is the process of rooting easy? any one clicks now?
I came from an OG Droid... and all I can say is WOW!! this phones is awesome!
as for rooting, its really not that bad, there are some easy root methods you can find on here, and there is a very strong development community already behind this phone.
Coming from rooted OC'd etc etc etc OG droid to TB and wow the difference in looks and performance is so much better.
Also just OC'd the TB to 1516Mhz. Amazing I tell ya.
This picture alone should sell you on the Thunderbolt vs the Droid.
Aside from the obvious gains from the processor/ram the screen and just the all around feel of the phone is amazing compared to the D1. You will not regret this purchase. <-- that statement comes from a consistent buyers remorse victim.
Came from an OG Droid running Sapphire. It treated me well, but the hardware on the TBolt just blows it out of the water. Now if we only had some AOSP goodness lol.
My two-cents: I agree with everyone regarding the huge performance increase of TB. It's also a much sexier device than Droid. However, I am NOT digging Sense. It's mostly not the launcher itself, but its invasion of apps that were fine (nay, wonderful) before, but whose Sense version suck (calendar, dialer, music, clock, sms/mms...). My Droid has CM7 RC3 on it and I really miss the more vanilla feel. There's also a TON of bloat on the phone and looking at the running task list makes me want to puke a little. Battery life is obv. a huge change too.
TL;DR: performance is a huge improvement, I hate Sense and am anxiously waiting for a working CM7 ROM. Oh, and there's the 4G, which is amazing.

I tried the easy method mentioned in Android Central, and didn't have much success with it, and ended up using the manual method using ADB. It wasn't too painful, and as long as you're careful and verify the MD5s when performing the root, it's not that scary.
I'm sure in due time easier methods will come about, but until easy/one click root methods are cleaned up a bit, I'd recommend getting some ADB-fu
As for my initial impressions of the TB, all I can say is...
Flippin awesome. I was getting to the point of trying to tweak some sysctl variables in the OG Droid to squeeze some additional performance out of it. (ADD quickly negated that little 'project'). 4G LTE is smokin' fast, as is the actual phone. ADW EX works like a dream too. My only gripe is swype doesn't play well with SMS.
I didn't come directly from an OG Droid, I had a Droid X. When I was on my D1 I ran Bugless Beast and Chevy kernels.
Peter Alfonso ftw
Coming from a rooted/oc'd droid and I'm more than happy. That think was a boat anchor. I'm also glad to ditch the keyboard.
As for Sense, at first I really hated it, but with debloat roms I've really started to like it.
I came from an OG Droid OC'd to 1 ghz running CM7 nightlies with compcache and swapper2. I was having huge memory issues with that build (obviously) which is why I opted for the TB rather than the upcoming Bionic (768 mb vs. 512 mb).
So far, I love this thing. It's fast, has a huge screen and a blossoming developer community. Not to mention Verizon's 4G is probably the greatest thing that has happened to smart phones in a long time.
Also, the phones (OG Droid and TB) weigh about the same despite the size difference
Steep learning curve for myself, and nearly no devs. The phone also seems to crash all by itself at least once a day.
I love my sidekick to death, but will she see support? At first I only bought it because it said sidekick and had the flippy screen. I was a happy camper, but then I learned that it was a ****ING LINUX PHONE *****. Given the investment, I'd like to have the return of cracking wireless network while wardriving, and listening to flacs that I'm torrenting off of a cloned SIM card in a third world country in a stolen Lincoln Continental. (gets a little OT towards the end, but you get my point.) Otherwise I'd just return the phone and duck tape my old SK Slide together and keep using that.
So, now that you see my intentions. Should I devote the time and love of writing regular expressions that make other programmers see blood, or leave the ship before she sinks?
To be honest I don't see it likely that many devs will be jumping on board for this phone. Theres many posts where they say the phone is meant for teenage girls, and teenage girls can't code . Well if you like the phone keep it. Custom roms aren't really that amazing... most of them only have minor tweaks and custom themes. The kernels are nice if you want to overclock or undervolt though and voodoo color/sound is nice. Overall if you like the phone, the flip screen and all keep it, Having it rooted gives you most of the benefits already... theres bound to be SOME development but i'm guessing it will be a VERY long time before you see cyanogen or miui released

Yeah but none of those have the QWERTY keyboard, which was my main motivator for the sidekick. I really miss the form factor the sidekick Slide. It was tiny but effective. All these newfangled smartphones are the size of boomerangs.
I'm not really going to complain as much anymore because I just figured out how to turn off 4G and having to charge my phone almost twice a day was my main complaint. Besides the random crashes, but my friend's phone (the evo 4g) does the same thing so it's not like I would be upgrading if I got another phone.
So I guess my only REAL complaint now is the speed, and not having a flash for the camera.
God I'm a whiny *****. Look at me. I own a phone for a teenage girl and now I'm turning into one. This phone is <3
Any chance gingerbread will make its way to it?
The G2 has a kb but not the lg g2x..All android phones don't have the shutdown isse, its probably linked to the software.my mytouch slide doesn't do hat at all or even my g1 when I had it. Anyway its your choice, but be careful since you keep this for 2yrs if you have a contract..Just try the phones at th tmo store if you can, the larger screens are easy to type on, the ipone has abt the same screen size and it can be used fine
Oh yeah I forgot to mention ol sammy is terrible with making updates so ginger won't be coming to a phone near for a long long time...Just ask some of the other galaxy s owners and they'll tell you. That's why I want nothing to do with sammy, they dnt give good support lik htc.

No. I paid upfront for the phone. I have a 14 day period to return it.
I just don't want a massive tablet in my pocket. I rock skinny jeans all day err'y day and having some brick in my pocket is terrible for the females looking at my legs.
I was thinking of the Blackberry Bold but closed source is a major boner killer. Same with IOS, but I am familiar with every phone operating system so its no biggie.
I know the Droid Pro has a nice keyboard, especially the one that slides, like the Droid OG, but it looks like a pain to type on, with all the letters smushed together.
**** it. I'm keeping it. I'm not some prissy little beezy. The only time I take pictures is at concerts and the pictures always turn out like **** 'cause I'm too drunk; and before and after sex...

I too am going back and forthcoming from a epic 4g the speeds I get on tmobile are stabl and way better than sprints 4g, minor sacrafices like no flash screen quality and size etc but I love the keyboard, text change, the reject list, wifi calling, form factor, etc and while its nice to have a decent cam phone with flash I will miss my epic 4g screen and flash its bittersweet. The keyboard is remarkable and I don't want to lose my reject list I think its a tmobil thing...however why do they charge 14.99 to tether the same data give to us? I don't get it!

err meant to hit quote not thanks lol, anyways
Care to point out where I mentioned not wanting development for the sk4g? I just said that it doesn't look like many devs are buying this phone and not to expect something like CM7 or MIUI any time soon.
also I explained custom roms fairly accurately
"most of them only have minor tweaks and custom themes."
and to what you said:
>power options - you mean adding reboot to the power menu? *tweak/theme*
>ported lock screen *theme*
I said the kernels are nice with voodoo color and sound and overclock/undervolt abilities and such are nice and the improved battery life from them.
and custom roms basically are just:
all bugfixes/tweaks known to date
themed to the devs liking or just stock theme (including custom lockscreen port and power options)
custom kernel (the main benefit in my opinion)
bloatware removed (which you can do with root)
some useful apps added(if the dev chooses)
but it wont take a phone you hate and turn it into an amazing phone.
What i'm getting at is if you like the phone you'll like it with custom roms because they look nice and have added goodies.. if you don't like the phone a rom isn't going to make it much better.
I see lots of people b*tching that this is a "teen phone" and the like.
It's the PERFECT form for those of use who want to use the phone as a mobile terminal. It's the one thing I miss the MOST about my old G1 when I upgraded to the Galaxy S. Sure the Galaxy S is a superior phone to the G1, but the physical keyboard gave me 2x the screen size and didn't have goofy input methods to get to various punctuations (' / \ | {} [] () etc) made it an excellent device to have on hand when I needed to address a server issue *RIGHT NOW*.
G2? Sorry, the keyboard on it sucks. This is the first real successor to the G1 that's an actual upgrade device (MT Slide doesn't really count, same processor constraint as the G1) and I would hope that some developers would show it some love. I'd have preferred if Samsung had given it the same screen as the Galaxy S, but they need to have *something* to upgrade if they plan on making a Mk2 device.
summary of the SK4G
It's been forever since I've upgraded and I just spent quite a bit of time with a number of phones, most of em 4G Android as that was the minimum i was looking for. I hope this summary helps your decisions.
I found that if you're in the market for a fast (1-1.2ghz, dual core), big (4"+) and beautiful (Super AMOLED) touch screen Android phone, there's many choices. Optimus/G2x, Incredible 2, Nexus S, Galaxy S I/II, etc.
There are also a good number of powerful slide-keyboard phones, such as the Evo Shift 4G, Epic 4G, G2, and Droid 2 Global. I noticed that the physical keyboard phones tended to trail the touch screens a bit in overall technology.
Raxxon said the G2 keyboard "sucks". I beg to differ - the HTC keyboards, which are all very similar, are probably the second-best keyboards I've ever used. 4 rows of full-sized and most importantly staggered keys. Not to mention, extra assignable shortcut keys.
But what if you were looking for something that makes using SSH, IRC, chat, email, and other messaging a breeze? There is only one phone with 5 rows of nicely spaced, tactile, staggered keys. The Sidekick 4G.
I was very annoyed that the designers felt that the voice-command and smiley-face buttons were more important than the right-side Alt key. But this can be remedied with a custom key mapper.
Yes, it's unfortunate that the screen looks so mediocre compared to the ones on other flagship models. I do miss the D-pad, but I think touchscreen navigation compensates for the crappy scroll "circle".
I admit I get phone-envy when I see the beautiful screens on those 4.5" dual core touch screen models. But nothing was as easy to email, chat, and type on as the Sidekick. I'll be buying one as soon as they get it in stock around here.
<As I was.>
Just wanted to give the official announcement that I finally upgraded from the old Hero. I have dev'ed in this thread in the past and have downloaded COUNTLESS roms from these respectful devs on this thread.
But I am here to pay my respects to this phone and this thread. I am going to miss it. The Hero I have still looks as good today as the day I bought it. Runs better than the day I bought it, and has more space than the day I bought it thanks to the great minds that be here.
This phone has overcame more than any other phone out there. When it's ABRUPT EOL was set forth by HTC, we said NO! We will not stand up to this money making scheme! When it was too crippled to use with updates, we made it so. When it wasn't fast enough to run something, we reverse engineered it (or made fresh) kernels with overclocking capabilities. When there was not much space, firerat had to go all scripty on it and give fourth abundant space. And yet, there are still ROMS coming out for this phone.
I believe this is the greatest dev phone ever (for roms). And I will always remember it as the first smartphone I ever owned.
The new phone is a Droid X btw. Not the fastest but darned sure it's competent for the job.
Also, I am not putting my phone to rest. It is residing now with AOSP 2.3.5, and is going to be used to dev out apps.
So to this thread and everyone in it I say.
>P3AC3<
i see u with CSouth, you shoulve gotten the XperiaPlay , or waited for another phone to come out, but good choice.
Hope you enjoy

I believe this is the greatest dev phone ever (for roms). And I will always remember it as the first smartphone I ever owned.
The new phone is a Droid X btw. Not the fastest but darned sure it's competent for the job.
Also, I am not putting my phone to rest. It is residing now with AOSP 2.3.5, and is going to be used to dev out apps.
So to this thread and everyone in it I say.

MilestoneX if you with CSpire .

I recently upgraded my phone too (iPhone, since I'm a mac person through and through, already jailbroken) and I agree with the above posts; this phone was a perfect phone. Sprint and HTC didn't make it that way, this community did. Thanks to all the devs and cookers for making this phone bearable at first, and awesome until the end.
I too feel the same way. The devs here are awesome. I still use my hero but because of the lack of RAM, flash player, processor speed, screen size, and front facing Cam, I am going to finally be getting the Evo3D in the next month.
Long live the hero!!

I just upgraded to the Evo design 4g.... I miss my hero... the little engine that could...
Just fyi it is the milestone x though its the exact same phone as the DROID x just rebranded. And I am with cspire but it was a deal where I could keep my all you can eat plan (would be very uncertain I could get a free /subsidized phone and keep the same plan later on.) And now they are locked into it for two more years with me. (tehehe )
peace hex, enjoy

Yeah, thats about the only reason i would turn mine in...to re-up with another unlimited plan for guaranteed two more years. But, otherwise, to be honest, I don't have any reason to upgrade. The Hero with 2.3.7 (kush GB deck) is VERY smooth for me and does just about everything I would want. We've got our pick of some great ROMs, and with firerats mod, i don't have to worry about app space. I don't care about front facing camera and the processing speed isn't phenomenal. But it does what i need it to do. I actually kind of like the smaller screen too. Some of these new phones are getting ridiculous with how big they are.
I guess the only other deal breaker for me would be new apps being incompatible with what the hero can do. Seems like the new Google Music (4.0.9) could fit in this category.
I remember my first time seeing a real android phone. I saw plenty of commercials about the original mytouch. But the day my friend walked into class and showed it to my teacher, it just blew my mind. He showed off how it had multiple screens, and he even had a bleach background (and let me tell you, it was beautiful). I didn't really look in depth about android. But i did learn a few months or a year later that the G2 was coming out. My dad wanted a faster blackberry (for his job) so we went to a T-mobile store and he asked for a fast phone. The person at the counter showed him the G2 and i immediately recognized it. In fact the whole store was filled with android phones that i played around with very much. It was not until my mother got my a Pandigital novel that i learned about rooting and rom (still didn't understand it as in depth as i do now).
TL;DR: When i first saw android, i didn't know what it was but i did think it was beautiful.
Now i wanna hear about your first experiences with android. Or what you thought when you first laid eyes on one.
Before i get an android i had a symbian phone so when i bought my htc wildfire i couldn't stop install rom and all stupid stuff on it, FREEDOM !!
Droid Eris.
So much better than a Blackberry.

switched from a crappy samsung phone without even a proper name (just an alphanumeric one) to the HTC DHD/Inspire 4g it was my forst android phone and it was and still is amazing because the one thing about android is, is that it never ceases to amaze me. Be it the official stuff or the root community, all of it is amazing.

lol my sis has the cliq right now. And boy that was the slowest thing i've ever touched. It was so slow that i rooted it and set the cpu higher to make it faster. It only made it 35% faster lol
It was stock on a D2, and I remember it lagging so badly. I tried to mod and customize but the deeper I got into it the slower it got. Then I finally made the choice to stick with android and buy a top tier phone, which is my GNex I have now and couldn't be happier. Lol
Android has come a long way, and the older versions really give it a bad name on those slow / sluggished spec'd phones.
My first Android was the Sanyo Zio by Kyocera. Which happened to be Kyoceras first Android as well. I think it was fate because it took me about a month before I decided to get it rooted. At the time there was virtually no development for it, source code was still nearly a year from release. So it gave me a chance to really get in to Androids and all the customization and some amateurish development. So really it assured my love of the OS.
Lower end phones arent always the worst. Im stuck on one now since some ass stole my Sensation. Its not too terrible, but if I was a total noob it would be. Thanks to my Zio Im not. Link2sd is a godsend for low capacity devices.
I can honestly say I will never own another kind of phone. If its not Android Im not interested.
I was intrigued as soon as I saw the "iDon't" commercials. I did a lot of reading and followed a few now-defunct forums. When the D2 came out I bought it sight unseen. Once I looked into rooting and learned how amazing the experience could become I was hooked.

One of my family members has a phone on Gingerbread. Running that was cool, especially since she came from a BlackBerry.
Then I got a Galaxy Nexus and was floored at how much better the experience was. Matias Duarte, that UI and UX pioneer, really and completely changed Android to the point that stock is awesome. Android went through puberty and has finally matured.
The very first time I messed around with android, it was in the back seat of my 1966 Chevy Nova at "the point".
The second time, I got busted by her old man with my finger inside her USB port...

My N1 was my first and still is. But I had been watching android from the first versions that looked like blackberry until I bought it.
But I live in Iceland and I was the first of anyone that I knew to buy an android phone.

I found jailbreaking easier that being said I also put my iPhone into a blender since i hated it. Rooting/flash I find more combersome for some reason though it's really not that difficult.

Haha I know right? I was so excited to get rid of it. Pulling down the statusbar on cm7 was laggy 0.o
I tweaked the hell out of it to no avail. The reason why I never had a bad impression of Android was because my friends were all showing off their superphones and when I finally upgraded, I knew how much better the experience would be

Just depends on the phone. Motos on certain versions of Froyo and GB have a one-click root that's even easier than jail breaking. Even the work around now isn't too bad. I will say when I see what's required for some I just think, "Glad I don't have to do all that."
My first experience was with the T-Mobile G1/HTC Dream, which I got release week. It was and still is in my top 10 list of best phones. The way the keyboard slid out and clacked was amazing! I love that phone!
My first android phone was a Samsung Galaxy S2, i picked that over the Skyrocket and i never really regretted it. The first thing i did with the phone when i came home from the store was root it. After that i found out about kernels, roms, and hundreds of mods. And ever since then I've been flashing roms way too much. Some times i change the rom 3-4 times in a day, and other times i try my best to stick with one rom, but i keep wanting more from the device so i go looking for more roms and mods.
First android was an HTC Desire Z. Still have it and love it. Now rocking an SIII and soon a GNex again.
