[Q] Using 3G version in Wifi Only? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone gotten the 3.1 update who is using the 3G Xoom version as a wi-fi only? I.e., no sim card, etc. That's what I have been doing and have not received the update.

Same boat. I think this is why we were not in the first batch. Meh. Not the end of the world.

Conjecture at best.

Not quite
I am using it in that configuration and I had not received notification, so I just did it manually. I waited for 3.0.1 for quite a while officially and eventually just went the manual route there, and figured I wouldn't waste my time this round.

Actually, the purpose of this thread is to figure out if anyone with an unactivated 3g xoom was getting the update. Your troll is not appreciated.

T-Mobile Preping for GB Update!?

So, after checking system updates for awhile and seeing I am at the current version, I just tried again and got
"Connection Failed."
Maybe T-Mobile took down the server for checking software updates to prep for the new version?
I thought it may have been my signal, but I am fully able to browse the web at 4G speeds...
***crosses fingers!!***
Edit: another idea I had was, maybe the shut down the server for update checks due to a TON of people loading the servers with checking for updates due to the GB update rumor? LOL

Amazon wifi only bypass

Is there a way to make the amazon app store believe that it has a wifi connection so that wifi only applications can be downloaded without needing wifi?

Considering that non-rooted phones still have to connect to a PC to side-load the darn apps, why can't we just use the "internet passthrough" feature and use our PC's broadband connection to download the wifi-only apps?!?
I am assuming you aren't Rooted? Cuz, um I don't have to connect to my PC to side load jack.
I have not been able to find an "app" that will let me bypass the wifi.

I hope improvements to 'camera stability' means improvements for when the camera:
isn't playing nice with multi-tasking,
isn't sleeping properly,
might be the cause of phone over heating,
might be the cause of random reboots,
might be the source of battery drain...

While I get what you're saying, it's hard for me to remain calm considering how erratic my signal is. Sometimes the phone just decides it has no sim card even though it does. Data hanging? Yep, I got that. Sporadic text notifications or lack thereof? Check. Having my phone function just as a phone would ease my nerves a little bit but as it stands it does it's own thing and it seriously affects my day to day.

to be honest I hope it wont be that similar. I am on 1.78, sim free phone, and it reboots sporadicly when switching from hsdpa to wifi.... I am crossing my fingers that the new radio included in 1.84 will solve this.

Happy to see that error being killed. A couple of areas around Rochester are basically s3 dead zones thanks to that. Not quite as exciting as jb but... enough to make me happy.

This is a Verizon only issue that NEEDS to be fixed. It is bull that Verizon wasted time locking down the bootloader that they screwed up their device... but to people who live in one of the "dead zones" the phone is all but useless as anything except a music player. Just because it's not an issue you have suffered doesn't mean it's not a necessary and needed fix.

The NO SIM error is ridiculous, and I am glad this will fix it. For those who don't know, some people can hardly use their S3 at times. I've had instances where every time I try to send a text for 20-30 minutes, it says sending, I lose all connections (no network at all) for a minute or two, then it reconnects, rinse, repeat. This happens when trying to send texts AND making a phone call. Imagine if you had an emergency and every time you tried to call your network dropped for 2 minutes.
But I don't know what else this will do to the phone. Disable current root methods? Bootloader issues?

Yes, many of us have the same issues, even in great 4G areas like DC. No new sim card or handset replacement would ever fix it. Took long enough for VZW to release this fix.
As usual if you are rooted/unlocked/running a ROM do NOT download the OTA update. Wait less than 24 hours for someone on the forums to debloat and flash manually. Obviously if you are stock, rooted, and locked go ahead and take the update VZW pushes out.

That's not good. I really have no desire to root the phone at this point but this may push me in that direction. I'm surprised that's legal.... Yeah - I love the samsungs but for some reason they don't work as well as other phones on the Verizon network. If I only used a few hundred minutes per month, I might not notice however I spend about 2-3 thousand minutes per month on the phone so I'm VERY aware of when a phone has a radio issue.

The no SIM problem I wouldn't think would be a software issue considering it doesn't affect all the phones. There are many many people who do not have this issue. I'm actually pretty sure I read something a while ago that said the SIM cards they are making are crappy quality, therefor that could be the culprit. I dunno tho for sure.
I don't know about that. That is something I have been thinking about lately..... I have been having a problem with my phones service, I live in a strong 3g and 4g area, and after I rooted both of my GS3's they started dropping service left and right where before they hadn't. The more I have read about the no sim issue the more it sounds just like my service dropping problem just without the no sim message appearing for me. So I wonder if more of the phone have it than we think and we think the terrible service is because of the radios when in all actuality its the no sim error and it just doesn't pop up the no sim message..... yes I know Samsung radios are crap on Verizon but I have plenty more Samsung phones that have never had any service issue whatsoever, whereas this phone you have to hold you head a certain way with both your arms stretched out and your tongue touching your nose just to send a message.
