[Q] Why Is My Inspire 4G Identified As A Desire HD? - HTC Inspire 4G

Hi, all.
I'm a new Inspire owner, an I'm going crazy trying to download an app from Android Market. When I finally was able to get the download started, a message popped up saying that I have a Desire HD and it's not supported by my provider, and it refused to download.
I looked through the settings and found "About phone," and under that "Phone identity." Here it says, correctly, that my Model number is HTC Inspire 4G.
So why does the download process think I have a Desire HD, and can I change it? This isn't the first time I've seen my device recognized as a Desire HD. I also see a lot of posts here saying "Posted from my Desire HD." I suspect that these are Inspire users having the same thing going on.
What can I do?
Thanks!
P.S. If anyone can tell me how to search the forums for this issue, I'd be happy to do so. Since the early days of forums, I've never been able to figure out how to search for a phrase. Is it possible? I tried several searches here, and kept coming up with 999 hits.

The Inspire is the US version of the Desire HD.

Yes, I was aware that they were the same thing, or close to it. The Inspire is also (of course) the AT&T version. The issue is that some software apparently isn't smart enough to know that. Thus it claims that AT&T doesn't support the Desire HD; I assume that if my device were identified as an Inspire, it would be just fine.
Thanks for the quick response!

Might I ask what app you are trying to download?

I just discovered that when I email, my phone is correctly identified as an Inspire 4G!
Actually, this is all academic now, since I was able to download the apk from the EasyTether home page. I really would like to know what was going on here, though....

About easytether, obviously you missed all the tech sites reporting that ATT, T-Mobile, and Verizon blocking the tethering apps from the Market on their devices. Since you wanted it, you were right to sideload it. As for the other issue, not sure, but I just changed my Sig from this app to read Inspire.

Not only that, but if you try to install apps from the web based market, and it asks you which device you want to install to? The Inspire is listed as a Desire HD. Just like the MyTouch 4G is listed as the Glacier, and the G2 is listed as the Vision.

MLB At Bat 11

I'm come across a lot of people that want to get MLB At Bat 11 working fully on all devices. Currently everything works fine except you can't stream the live games unless you have an approved device. I have a DROID2 that works fine, took the apk, and put it on my Nook Color, and chagned the build.prop to the verizon galaxy tab, another approved device, and it doesn't give me the option to watch the games. Anyone have an idea?
where is the list of handsets that have been approved for steaming? I have a Samsung Vibrant and bought the app but have not seen the streaming option. yes, i'm a MLB.tv subscriber.

Go to the market and look for the app and it will have a list of devices that are compatible for streaming live video.
They say that more devices will come, but I'm not sure why it isn't on all devices. I'm thinking it is a network reason, not to flood the bandwidth right away. Think it should be a pretty quick fix.

They mention needing flash, so could that be why some devices aren't there? I'm not up to date on which devices are on 2.2 by now
most devices have it now. I have flash on all my devices and Flash works great.
Just to consolidate some info from other threads (good call on opening this one up in the general section, jkabaseball.)
Devices supported:
Sprint HTC Evo, Verizon HTC Droid Incredible, Verizon Motorola Droid X, Verizon Motorola Droid, Verizon Motorola Droid 2, Verizon Motorola Droid Pro, Verizon HTC Thunderbolt, Samsung Galaxy Tab, HTC Nexus One, T-Mobile Samsung Nexus S, T-Mobile HTC Glacier (myTouch 4G). Minimum OS 2.2 and Installed Flash.
build.prop hack tried (this was an attempt to get a Nook to spoof a Galaxy Tab)
ro.build.fingerprint=google/passion/passion:2.3.3/GRI40/102588:user/release-keys
to
ro.build.fingerprint=samsung/GT-P1000/GT-P1000/GT-P1000:2.2/FROYO/XXJJ3:user/release-keys
I also tried to pull a logcat while the app was starting up, but didn't see anything that looked helpful in there. If someone with more knowledge of this would like me to post that, let me know.
The only other opening I can think of is perhaps more of the build.prop needs to be edited in order to convince the app you're running a supported device. There are definitely more parts of it that could, in theory, be used to identify the device, but I was under the impression that ro.build.fingerprint was all that really mattered. If someone with more experience messing around with build.prop could weigh in, that'd be awesome.
It has to also be a device and carrier setting somewhere. The galaxy tab works if you have the verizon one, but no other one. I'm not sure how much it helps, but more information the better. I don't see verizon mentioned in the ro.build.fingerprint.
There's all kind of carrier/device stuff in the build.prop. From the one on my Nook:
ro.product.model=NookColor
ro.product.brand=bn
ro.product.name=encore
ro.product.device=encore
ro.product.board=encore
...
...
...
ro.product.manufacturer=bn
And then, perhaps most tantalizing of all...
# ro.build.product is obsolete; use ro.product.device
ro.build.product=encore
That, to me, seems like a decent place to start. The only problem is, lacking a build.prop from a Tab, I'm not sure what anything should be changed to.
As such: Maybe we're going about this backwards. What would be great is if we had someone with a Verizon Tab as a guinea pig. They could then do the following:
1. Secure a build.prop from a T-Mobile Tab.
2. Note which lines in the two build.props are different.
3. One at a time, change a line in the Verizon build.prop to the corresponding TMO build.prop, rebooting and then trying to stream between each one.
4. In theory, once it stops working, the last one that was changed is your culprit.
Failing that, if we could just get our hands on a full Verizon build.prop, we could take a stab at spoofing ALL of the relevant information to the best of our ability.
Going to try this once I can get a build.prop. You think I could extract it up from a ROM or update.zip?
Yeah, it should just be within /system of any rom you can track down.

I got streaming to work on my Vibrant by editing my bulid.prop to spoof the phone as a Nexus S. I didn't experiment with which one is actually getting read by the app but I changed the following (edited with SGS tools):
Code:
ro.product.model=Nexus S
ro.product.brand=Google
ro.product.name=sodu
ro.product.device=crespo
After rebooting the phone and launching I got the option to stream a game in the quick menu on the default scoreboard page.
I also get the option, but it hangs on "Getting Current Location". Also seems to have made a few apps disapear when my phone boots up.
I have a Galaxy S... similar hardware to the Nexus S but does anyone know whether changing the build.prop as described by dvinnen will cause problems with other apps or phone functions?
I haven't run into any issues with it yet but I could see there being problems. An app might think you have the NFS radio or something. Worth it, for me atleast, to be able to watch games on my phone.
It is poor resolution though, dunno why they can't do a h.264 stream instead of a flash stream.
I have followed dvinnen 's build.prop settings on my Viewsonic Gtablet running vegan 5.1.1 and have not gotten the mlb.tv option to show up.
Also - strangely, the app never asks for my user/pass, even after i have cleared cache and data for it ... weird.
I would like to be able to watch games on my nice tablet sized screen .. but no luck so far.
Any info is appreciated.
Do you have the paid app? Or just the free one?

it was doing that for me too, so i used "location spoofer" that i dled from the android market to spoof my location to anywhere outside the blacked out area of the game youre trying to watch. worked for me after that...

Inspire/Desire

Sorry if this has been covered, but I don't have the time for searches. I have an Atrix myself, but bought the wife an Inspire a couple of weeks back when she was due an upgrade.
Today for the first time I went to transfer files to her Inspire from my Atrix via bluetooth. When she made her phone discoverable, it showed as a Desire on my phone.
Leads me to believe both are one and the same, or at least share the exact same software/firmware, with a different outer shell.
Does this mean mods for the Desire are usable on the Inspire without requiring porting of any sort?
Anyway, just an observation.
Cheers!
Before anyone jumps you for asking its all over the forums. The inspire and desire hd are basically one in the same minus a bit of hardware. You'll find more info about that in the android dev section. Anyone one can jump in and correct me if i missed something.

buying an inspire 4g tomorrow from craigslist... can any software be rooted?

First thing I wanna do is root the phone and put sense rom 3.0 on there... Can any software version be able to rooted or do I have to look for a certain version when I buy the phone tomorrow...
Any

Yes, from everything I've read so far, it does not matter software version. As the Hack Kit and Bubby's OneClick both get root to the device in both cases of pre or post HSUPA-update. There are pre and post HSUPA-update radios, so that's no problem. If you see 1.84.502.11 under software version, by going to settings, about phone, and then clicking software information, then you have a phone that has received the OTA HSUPA-update. If you see a slight difference in the version number then what I have listed, then it does not have that update installed.

Well, have you owned an inspire before?
Why not at least test out the phone while it's stock (assuming it is), for a few days, at the very least?
That way you can test it out to make sure everything works correctly, and get a feel for the behavior of the phone "normally."
That way once you start flashing roms and something goofy starts happening (trust me, it will), you'll have a reference point.

[Q] HTC Evo Shift - Software Upgrade

Hi all,
I'm going to be getting an HTC Evo Shift from someone, which I think has Android 2.2 Froyo on it.
The phone was reported lost and a replacement obtained, then after getting the replacement the old phone was found.... but Sprint said they had written it off, and didn't want the old one back. The ESN remains blocked on Sprint because of this, but they won't unblock it and just said they didn't want it.
Soooo, I'm going to use it as a WiFi only device... but I'd really like to get Gingerbread 2.3 onto it somehow... which I'm assuming can't be done OTA if the ESN is blocked on the Sprint network?
Also, I'm in Canada so once I get it, I won't have access to the Sprint network at all.... and I don't know if the update can be downloaded and installed manually through the computer or what. Anyone know?
I heard the Evo Shift can be rooted as well, but that sounds very complicated to me... so I'm still figuring out what my options are with regards to getting the software as updated as possible.
Any advice would be appreciated
id personally recommend reading up on how to root your fone..
and once you get that going...
you can just install a diff rom that has 2.3 on it..
=D
hey
I did a bit of reading on rooting bit it seems like its different for all devices and some are "one click" solutions while others are multi-step instructions full of unfamilliar terms and procedures which could ruin the phone. lol
I did read some instructions that pertained to the Evo Shift, but there was much involved that my brain shut off after reading the first few steps.
I was really hoping for something simple. but that might be a pipe dream, eh?

Looks like the simplest root method for the shift. I haven't tried it, but since it is on xda good chance it is well supported.

Thanks for the link.
Still sounds scary... but I'll finish reading the rest of the discussion later and see what others ultimately had to say about it.
Still open to comments from others too if anyone has any.
I dont have the phone yet, I'm just getting prepared so I can get to work updating it as soon as it arrives.
Easy and fast root method

The link that was posted would be the easiest for someone but the perm root instructions that are stickied in the development section is what I have used many times on my shift and my girls shift when I root, you can do it either from the pc or from terminal on your phone just have to make sure the commands are exact so I would say just use the pc and copy from the root instructions and paste in command prompt. There are a few gingerbread ROMS to choose from 2 are stock, one is newkidds the other is X99s ROM, then there is MikShiFted-G which is a very optimized and snappy GB, and last there is Elite v1.2 over on themikmik which is based off MikShifted-G but has carousel Rosie and 3D widgets, whatever you do don't try the ota if it goes through you will be stuck with a OS that hasn't been rooted yet

Thanks for the replies guys.
I might give it a shot when it arrives.
There is a lot more I need to look into first.
I've seen lots of people say that if a CDMA phone has a carrier blocked ESN, that you can flash another carriers ROM onto it and activate it with them. I think Cricket Wireless or Boost Mobile was mentioned, but I can't remember.
Here in Canada, Bell still runs CDMA but they will NOT allow a non-Bell CDMA phone to be connected to their network, under any circumstances. HSPA/GSM they will though.
It I could flash the ROM to a carrier other than Sprint, that might be a good idea. That way the thing can potentially have some value as a phone too, and maybe serve me as a roaming device when I travel to the US. Or, would just installing one of the third party ROM's allow it to be activated on another carrier?
I'm really not familliar with the way the US carriers operate.

I know its old news by now, but if you have a lucid still, ICS is finally out for it. If you haven't installed yet, I would suggest the computer method, its a lot quicker than doing it OTA, which I couldn't even get to work right.
I can't even get that to work.Verizon is sending me a new phone

yeah I wish we had ROMs for it. But its a sweet little phone!
it's a great phone
ICS update killed the ability to use 3rd party Tethering apps. Very annoying.
Lol to the guy above me. don't ya think it's kind of why they push these kind of updates out. they don't like third party tethering apps. then they can't track your data.
I wish we could find someone to figure a downgrade method to go back to 2.3.6 stock with root.

Does anybody know how to view the hidden menu on this phone? I am running the 4.0.4. Rooted and I still cannot figure out how to access it. All I really want is to turn off 4Glte on this phone because I live in a no 4G city and my battery is being wasted on 4G scanning. I have tried LTE toggle apps but they get blocked and a little notification saying "access to system info is prohibited " pops up. Being rooted I should have a way to bypass that, but I have no idea what file or app I need to edit to do so. If anyone out here can help me I will be forever grateful. The boys over at android forums have not been able to help. I'm beginning to think there is no hope. If anyone knows the secret code to view the hidden menu or just simply has a way to shut off the program that denies me from viewing system info it would be awesome. Going from a gnex to this in effort to get better battery life has backfired thus far.
Thanks in advance.

Not sure if this will work on this particular phone but Google "any cut apk" then install any cut and use create new shortcut option. This works one some phones not all.
Wow. I should have read this whole post huh!! Sorry any cut is still fun to play with for a few seconds tho!
I got jb but you should just be able to go to settings and then to mobile networks and change it from lte or global to cmda. That will hit you with 3g and not 4g.

See there is no option to switch from 3g only to 4g/3g modes. That's why I am going crazy trying to find it. I have used any cut and other apps to be able to find this hidden "test mode" menu that I have been digging for. Unfortunately the phone info menu in this setting is still blocked. Every time I try to view it I get a little popup saying "access to phone info is prohobited" thus presenting my problem. I have root explorer and I am not afraid to use it. Does anybody here know what program or permission is prohibiting me? I will edit/delete it as soon as it is located. Nobody is prohibiting me from viewing settings on my phone... At least once I find out how to gain access to them.
Try this app, it might help you with some data features.
