[Poll] How much 4G data do you use? Post your monthly KBs of usage here. - Thunderbolt General

So, I bought the Thuderbolt on launch day and in half a billing cycle with the 4G I racked up 1.3 GB of usage.
Looking at this past month's bill, my first full billing cycle with the Thunderbolt, I was shocked to find that I used 4.725 GB of data last month.
I was averaging 758 MB of data per month on my Droid Incredible. So, in the name of science, pull up your last bill and let everyone know how much data you blew through last month.
What do you think? Is 5 GB/month enough to get your speeds throttled due to being in the top 5% of data users?

Last month I was around 11gb.

i use between 2 and 3 GB. I'd be ok with a 5 GB cap right now. Though, if I use netflix or skype...

You signed an agreement for unlimited. There is no cap. They may cap you speed wise at some point, but you can still use the data.
I used 16gb last month and I was never capped. Capping LTE is like using Yahoo as your search engine... stupid.

No way (at least IMO.) They're offering 10GB plans to LTE users on all devices except the Bolt (all non-phone devices.) I think you'd have to blast pretty far over that to hit that top 5 percent.

I'm at 7.5gb with 3g only but just got 4G in my area this morning so I expect that to up big time.

congrats. you're going to be stoked.

A little over 10.5GB gigs last month.
Also, in regards to the cap question, I'd think one would have to use like 50 or 100 gigs a month to be throttled. I have read claims of people using more than 120gigs, which seems like landline cable or dsl usage stats.

7.48 GB last cycle.
WTF @ the person who voted 1 GB? Honestly, if you're using less than 1 GB of data a month, why do you even need a 4G phone then?

0 gb, there's no 4g here yet but I average about 6 gb of 3g and 16 gb (no tethering) was my highest usage for a month.

When I had 4G working on my phone, I installed CM7 and haven't gotten LTE since, I downloaded about 7GBs in a month, the second month I nearly hit 11GBs.

Try the "get 4g working on cm7" thread. I can get 4g pretty reliably on the 4/20 leaked ruu radio by playing with the bands settings as described in the thread.

680MB ... almost no tethering, no streaming music, and i'm on wifi @ home and @ work and i live 1.5mi from work so no commute...
all my data is probably from maps/navigator or youtube/radio streams when im out for a weekend.
no 4G @ home/work but it's available within 30 minutes driving so i have used it. it's not very fast in this area tho...max like 8mbps with usually 5-7

im not entirely convinced that thunderbolt usage is being reported correctly. It says I have used 12gb and that pretty much impossible for me to believe. My normal usage on my Droid x was around 5gb and Im nkt doing anything different . Most of the time my thunderbolt is on wifi.

Just shy of 11 gigs last month. My wife's is probably more typical at just around 3.5 gigs.

Yup, increase coverage and speeds, lower the data cap in half, and use up your data in half the time! I think if I did the math right, I can cap out 5gigs in about 9hours of watching netflix via my playon app alone; which is about 20min a day for a given 30 day month. They should of kept the 10gig at least, considering EVERYTHING this phone does practically uses the internet.
Wow, I didn't know they did that. I thought I used mine a lot, but I just checked and I only use about 500-600 MB a month, lol

Yep, my wife and I have both been throttled and have unlimited. I hate TMO and can't wait to go to Sprint for real unlimited.
I never get close to this.. dont you have real internet, like 99.9% of the world, I believe even remote parts of Africa have internet.. you really dont need to tether your phone for everything.
wow wtf are you guys doing with your phones? tethering to your PC and broadcasting 1080p video on ustream?? My next billing cycle starts in 5 days and I've only used 250mb (I'm in a 4G area). I use my data A LOT too - youtube, surfing the web, market downloads, facebook, twitter, etc. I use an app called Line2 for my incoming/outgoing calls and text msgs which relys on my data and I still don't get close to 1GB.
I will tell you how I consume 5GB quickly.
I am an independent IT consultant where my clients don't allow access to their network with my machine. Therefore, I am tethered 12hrs every business day. Syncing a 3gb IMAP mailbox all day is a lot of data alone!

Then you should have the common sense to have a better internet solution than tethering.
I've never run into the data cap, not because I don't use my data, but because I'm actually wise about it and don't carelessly burn bandwidth. Use Wifi when available, don't try to consume as much data as you can.

Hey, we have no data limits at sprint..
Except you'll be lucky to see more than 300 kbps in most areas during the day with 3g, and ~2-5 Mbps on 4g. We have people in the evo forum *****ing about the extremely slow network, ready to jump ship to vz or elsewhere.
I've come to the conclusion there is no ideal solution. Each provider is a compromise of different elements such as price, service, data, features, etc.

Common Sense? You are expecting a Corporation sales person to be honest with you? They are interested in one thing and that is selling a product. They don't care if you get screwed in the end. They will just take your $200 ETF when you find out how much they lied to you... Well didn't disclose the TRUTH to you and you move on to the next corporation that does it to you in another way. That's what business has come to in America.
A warning would have been nice around 4gigs. TBH, if you say you use the web all the time and only have 4-500megs usage your lying. My biggest data drain went into streaming TV and music from my home server. I was unaware t-mobile even had a limit until i got the message saying I was cut off, because when i had my BB i would usually only average about 20megs a month usage. Hell, I ALMOST went with a 200meg connection, but didn't want to feel restricted so I went with unlimited.
These phones are beast, as they should be with a 4+meg connection! It just doesn't seem fair to offer us all these gadgets and offer us their TV packages and crap then take it away just barely into the month because we actually use what they advertised to sell the product!

So at ~87 custom apps, that I have actually kept and not just downloaded to try, at 2.5megs each that's 217.5megs; a total which almost meets your usage so far alone.
Well, I'm in my first month with TMO and already got my 5GB notice. Isn't it nice. I get a ripping 20 KB/SEC on my best download but, usually around 10 to 12KB/SEC on AMERICAS LARGEST 4G NETWORK. That happened right in the middle of a SW update and their CRAPPY network could not even handle a text message and the download at the same time. They cut me down to 5KB/SEC and it took close to 2 hrs to DL 50MB. What a deal they are giving us. The big problem is the only company that I have ever been happy with is no longer doing business in my area. Lots to look forward to.

You are definitely going to have your account reviewed. That much data usage in a month is nearly impossible on a phone, so they will try to determine if you are tethering.
holy gigabytes batman! I've used less than 200 MB over the past 3 months combined.
Most ive hit was 40GB and nothing happened. 100 is WAY to much for just roms bro, you got to be doing some tethering.
I know I do, thats how I hit 40GB and thats streaming HQ content.
Holy Data Usage Batman! (Sorry, I had to say that LOL)
I barely use 2 GB a month, only once did I reach 2.5 GBs. And that's with streaming music in the car and occasional web browsing.
I hate to say this but people like you, using 100 GBs, is why Verizon got rid of the Unlimited Data plans.
My data abuse record is 50 gb, and that was torrenting almost every night.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda premium
I myself average 10-15gb a month, not tethering. I stream Netflix during my lunch breaks though too. Still, most people sound like they are averaging far more than the current cap in place. I don't know what I'm going to do when they start phasing out the grandfathered in people.
Wow, well now I know who all to blame when everyone on Verizon gets pushed into the tiered data plan.
I use my phone for a lot of stuff that uses data. I even tether but only when I'm not around an internet source. I stay below 2 to 2.5GB every month.
Ya I'm definitely not trying to be a data hog but I do download alot of bluray movies off torrents (5-7gb a pop) and Rage the game was 18Gb by itself. I usually only use about 40 but somehow I got carried away this month. 4g I definitely worth it
Sent from my Gummy Charged GBE 2.1
Most they'll probably do is throttle you (at this point its safe to assume you are in the top 5% data users if not the #1) to 3G speeds or lower. Now if you do it multiple times, then I'd be worrying
Just buy the tether plan if you are using that much IMO. It is still saving you money in the long run over a high speed home connection and it would alleviate the worry of getting forced into tiered data by Verizon.
Meh, I've seen a bill over 425GB.
I'm thinking the top 5% throttling mechanism will keep the network stable enough to keep us on our grandfathered plans. I'd hate to be wrong, I average 6 or 7GBs or so myself.
Verizon seems to be great at coming up with ways to keep the network bandwidth usage in check:
1. Network Optimization- http://support.verizonwireless.com/information/data_disclosure.html
2. Top 5% Throttling - http://www.intomobile.com/2011/09/19/verizon-starts-throttling-top-5-data-users/
3. Turbo API - http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/2/2...er-data-turbo-api-to-developers-fees-to-users
4. ??
5. Profit!
The most I used in 1 month was 15gb. That was watching a lot of Netflix. I probable average 4gb most months.

How exactly is using any amount of data "abusing the system" when you have an unlimited plan? It certainly isn't difficult to put up 13 GB. I decided to try MOG the other day and put up a couple gig in about as many hours. I ended up with around 7 GB or so last month. Granted that's more than I usually use, but I don't see how any amount of data use is abusing the system when you have an unlimited plan. Sounds like AT&T is brainwashing you into thinking you should pay for something unlimited, but still not use much of it.
Meanwhile, for every person who used 13 GB on their "unlimited" plan, there were probably 100 people who used only a couple hundred MB on any plan. While 13 GB may be a lot to us, 2-5 GB isn't. And when you talk about the average person, 1 GB is a lot, and the average people outnumber us by a very large amount.

Really T-Mobile?

So yeah my "unlimited" plan was slowed down because I exceeded the 2 GB limit on the plan I had. My question is, how much do they cut off in the "unlimited" plan when you reach your maximum 4G bandwidth?
I noticed that my speed is so sluggish that when I download something it goes by the kilo bytes, and I can't stand it!
Also it has nothing to do with the reception, I live in the tri-state area so obviously T-Mobile has full coverage of where I live.

its probably because you have the 2gb high speed unlimited plan and not the unlimited nationwide 4g plan (I have that and I love it!! No throttling at all!!
You should have truly unlimited data but only 2 gigs of 4g then they cap your bandwith to about 26k.

10,000 gigs. Assuming the month has 30 days:
Around 333 gigs per day
13 gigs per hour
.23 gigs (230 megabytes) per minute

Speed test with my previous SII with 42Mbps+ capability, it only does 25Mbps+ max download, but practically it probably will probably download 20Mbps by average, so I doubt one can reach the limit even downloading 24/7. Would have to wait till next year when LTE is out for T-Mobile.

ATT to Straight Talk

Question: looking at leaving ATT to cut down on expenses. Straight talk and T- mobile both have deals where you can being your own phone and just switch Sims. Since I'm running Scott's CM 10 (12/29), figuring their requirement to have the phone unlocked is not an issue. I noticed that T- mobile has a limit then it's throttled. Straight talk doesn't seem to have a cap or throttle point. Anyone out there can give me their experience with straight talk? Thank you for any advice/wisdom/warnings.

Again though...most people don't really get throttled on st...at least from what I've read...but there still is a noticeable amount that do get throttled
Been debating on switching to st my self...not sure if I wanna lose lte on my HTC vivid though :/

Thanks. This all still looks too good.... So used to doing something when everything looks good, then finding out later that there was a huge BUT to the good news.
When throttled, I know that downloading a new ROM may take forever, but would I still be able to do any radio streaming? Even low quality?
Thanks again.

Yes Straight Talk will throttle you. When I first got straight talk I used 5+ gigs in first month without being throttled, but 2 weeks into the second month and about 2 gigs used I got a friendly call from them and was throttled. Severely throttled as close to no data as possible. To use that much data I was setting up computers at a friends house that did not have internet.
I have had straight talk over a year now, and that is the only time I have bee throttled. I have went over 2 gigs in some of those months. ,

I use the att sim from St and have for about 4 months now. Last month I was downloading Rom updates at work which add up quick but stayed under 1.5 Gb total for the month and my speed was slowed to 0.23mbs where I was getting around 5-7mbs. I never got a call or text about it but when my next month stated again it seemed speed was back to normal. I do like the Service tho as it is the same as att and half the price

I've been so spoiled with high-speed at home/work/public wifi that I have forgotten one thing.... If I'm throttled to that speed, could I still stream at low quality? (32-64K) Been so long since dial-up......
Are we spoiled or what????
I did have trouble once I had insane crazy slow DL speeds I called them they reset no trouble since.I'm happy but like I said check for your area coverage.

I'd suggest reading my recent experiences with limitations and throttling practices on straight talk before switching.

So, from what I've heard so far, straight talk uses ATT towers, so reception should be the same. Data usage should not be a problem, as long as I don't tether. The throttling does go down to a crawl, but some people don't see a definable amount that it starts at. At least one person noted that they called and got speed back up. Overall, not to bad I take it.

I've been using Straight Talk since October and love it but I'm not a huge user of data on my phone or my tablet. I did use my phone as a hotspot over Christmas while at my grandmothers house in the backwoods of Kentucky and not only had service but internet for my laptop and Toshiba Thrive tablet. I must say I was impressed! :victory:
LOL I wouldn't abuse it to much they cut me off completely within 10 days lol funny when I'm home I'm on WiFi anyways I'm switching after this month getting a new phone I'm over the throttle and complete shut off.I will keep the infuse though its a bad a$$ phone for sure.
