So now that the gingerbread roms have been out for a while, I'm very tempted to go ahead and flash one, however I'm seeing a lot of the roms are still in beta.
I'd like to know what are some known issues that i should be aware of.
Stability and battery life is very important. I'm currently still running Continuum v4.
What known issues are there with the gingerbread roms and any pros and cons of it compared to a froyo rom other than the obvious?
Personally I have had stability issues with all the GB ROMs (that I tried). Random freezes, and reboots. I experienced this with continuum, GR, Perception and Mosaic. I will say Mosaic was the best for me. But it was running TW 3, so it felt like FroYo but a little slower and buggier. GR and Perception are running TW 4, which is much nicer, but still very beta. I feel Perception is much more stable than GR-12. But even so, I get a freeze that requires a reboot after almost every 2 hours of use.
As far as battery, there is definately a charging issue. If you leave it charging after full, when you unplug you get a big drop. I tried all the FroYo calibration tricks, it they don't seem to work. I say this with a grain of salt. I haven't stayed on the same ROM for more than a few days. So I haven't given it much time to learn before I flashed a new ROM.
Its been a fun week using GB, but I think I am going back to FireFly until the ROMs lose the "beta"
Sent from my Captivate running Perception IIb3
Yes, there is a charging issue for some, but not all. Battery life (once charged) is unreal. I have found the roms I've used to be very stable. Juwe's, Continuum betas 1-3 and RC3 were great(missed rc1 and 2 while trying juwe's because of charging issue). C5.1 and 5.3 have been great also.
As with any rom, read read, and read some more before attempting a GB rom. Ask questions, use search, know exactly what you have to do. Also, have a jig (just in case). If you are one that doesn't have 3 button fix, read ALOT about that in regards to GB.
Good luck.
I've been on MikeyMike's GR-12 and talondev's kernel and have been doing farely well. Everything will have it's instabilities, but so far I've only noticed a couple of things (tips and otherwise):
1. be careful about which apps and stuff you restore from TiBu or others; LauncherPro was causing alota FC's with the new rom
2. be sure to read the WHOLE OP in whichever ROM you're flashing, since (though I'm sure you know this, just making sure) GR requires new bootloaders. Also, if you're flashing back to stock 2.1 you need to use one-click odin and not three-button fix.
3. I've read about charge-death/issues, but I haven't had much problem with that.
4. At least for the rom I'm using, the ambient light sensor seems to freak out sometimes.
5. also I don't think there is automatic ext4 conversion. Most roms just use rfs and give you an option of converting with an app. Some roms require you to reconvert back to rfs before flashing a new update or something.
PROS:
1. Touchwiz 4 (it's pretty nice, though still not as feature-filled as custom launchers)
2. GPS has been GREAT for me since upgrading to GR. not sure if this is common (also my gps on stock was horrid)
3. Smooth even without ext4 or OC.
Note I haven't tried alot of GR roms (did for froyo) so my experience in terms of diversity is rather limited. But as the above posts say, READ EVERYTHING.
As long as you're not going to be away from your computer for a long time, I'd say take a plunge.
glhf =)
The only real issue I've experienced is some problem pertaining to broadcom and the gps. You'll notice logcat flooded with this:
E/GPS ( 129): [gps_lcsapi_init][line = 442] : Failed to call BrcmLbs_init(e
rrno = 2)
I/GPS ( 129): [gps_state_done][line = 293] : successfully called

It's pretty annoying, but I don't know whether it has any sort of impact on battery life or gps performance.. at least, I haven't noticed any.
So far I would have to say the light sensor being a problem when trying to make a call.....but other then that battery life on GB is amazing compared to Froyo! In my opinion the GB Roms are fine for daily use!
Darky's V10.0
And you will never look back.
I"ve gotta say I've been using Darky's for the last week and it's been damn amazing. Had used Continuum before that.
I haven't had any charging problems on any of the roms I've tried. I only had one weird install where things didn't work right, and a quick factory reset and reflash seemed to work just fine.
Try the GR-11. Been using it over like a week to two weeks now (over 80 hours since last reboot), and been pretty stable. All the needed features like wifi, bluetooth, etc are working. And battery life on this ROM is better than 2.2 ROMs I have used.
I've been running Continuum 5.3 and it's been stable and fast for me.
I've been running both Continuum and Mosaic. I have had no real issues whatsoever. I haven't had the charge issue that others are reporting, lag issues that others are reporting or any other issues.
I consider myself lucky but I am glad that I upgraded to GB. For one, it makes flashing easier as I haven't had to go back to stock which means no messing with bootloaders and possibly bricking my phone. Two, I feel my phone is much faster than it was on Froyo or Eclair and three, my battery life has actually been better.
I'm glad I did the upgrade and have been happy with my phone again. However a word of caution. Going to GB has some steps that cannot be taken lightly. Please make sure you really research these steps and read as much as you can. If you aren't comfortable with what these steps are, you are only asking for trouble. If you understand them and follow them exactly, you should have no problems.
Good luck!!

This was my first time putting anything on a phone, and it went surprisingly easy. (with a lot of reading on xda) The cog and firebird development forum are clogged so I thought I'd at least give a little info back in a better spot.
Here is what worked for me.
Flashed rom with cognition 3.04 using CWM
Flashed Kernel with firebird 3 v8. using SGS kernel flasher
Worked amazing, but my friends all heard echos and horrible calling on their end
installed a the JK4 modem using cwm and I can not find one problem with the set up. And it actually makes great phone calls on both sides.
Now I get a 9 satellite GPS lock in 4 seconds according to sgs tools. Compare that to 30 seconds before with stock.
I have a quadrant score consistently at 1550. (800 or so before in stock config)
I bump charged the battery and erased the battery file. I am getting over 16 hours of moderate use before I drop below 30 percent. (with the original firebird and cognition 3.01 I was lucky to get 11 hours before I got a battery shut down. )
Phone makes great phone call.
So overall Cog 3, firebird2 and the jk4 are a flawless combination for me.
The only strange thing was when I flash a modem, my phone wouldn't send outgoing texts for 10 min, then it magically started working normally. I was a bit worried, but now I know not to panic.
i did about the same, with similar results!
i was running cognition 2 before, so i disabled the voodoo lagfix and used ODIN to flash the stock eclair 2.1 rom. went smoothly.
then i rooted the phone and installed cognition 3.04 using CWM. no problem there. i used it for about a day and noticed a better battery life then i'd had before and a nice speed improvement.
after reading up on the firebird kernel, i installed firebird 2 v0.5, again using CWM. i honestly hadn't used cognition without firebird long enough to tell any huge differences, but i've generally been very pleased with firebird.
i've just updated firebird to v0.8. haven't had any issues so far, but i haven't tested it heavily either.
my battery life has been superb and my phone is so much snappier. feels like a new phone, even after using cognition 2 for awhile. i haven't had any problems with call noise, either.
I can't remember but do you lose bluetooth functionality using firebird 2? I thought I read that somewhere...
Hmmm I been using just Cog 3.04 and although It responded great overall, the battery life sucked for me, that was my reason for switching to other roms. Might have to go back and try it out..
I updated directly from Cognition 2.3b8 to 3.04 via Rom Manager becuase I cannot use ODIN, the used CWM to update the kernel. Just rebooted and all seems normal. Will se how the modem works before I update to JK4, like rob ben did.
How I know that I have firebird 2 on board?
how was the battery life before jk4? maybe that's my problem.

Unfortunately yes. You can connect a bluetooth to the phone just fine, but the only thing you will hear is static.

Thanks, I appreciate your answer. I was about to flash it but I really need bluetooth in my car. Need to keep both hands on the steering wheel!
The battery is going good so far with firebird 2 and cog 3.04. I have the phone on standy for two hours so far and it only dropped 2%.
Cognition 3.04 worth it? I flashed it once and noticed that the home button didnt work in the Contacts
Where can I find this JK4 modem to flash? I'm using Darky's ROM but the reception is really bad.
I'm still really happy with it. With heavy use I need to charge each night. But today it was pretty low use and I am sitting at 52 percent. The home button works fine for me in contacts. I think amount of use is a subjective term, but for my needs I am perfectly happy with this set up the way it is..
That being said, I'm sure I will try a few other roms just because I like to tinker with things.
Thanks for the info
Been trying different modems and such with little luck
If you find something that works for you, let me know. I might just switch from Darky's with the other problems it is giving me.

Just make sure they're clockwork flashable, if you're gonna use clockworkmod. The attached jk4 modem is.

I stay with jk4 for 2 days, the battery was bad. Last night I change strategy. Moved out of Firebird by flashing the original kernel of Cog 3.04 and changing the modem to jj4. I want to try the apparent consensus I found through this forum that if you have a cappy rom, which Cog 3.04 seems to be (after all is based on the Rogers Cappy), stay with a cappy kernel and a cappy modem. So far I can report that I lost BLN and Voodoo sound management capabilities but I gained bluetooth back. Will tested and if I change to another configuration I will report back.

See my post above: original Cog 3.04 + I897 modem (like jj4, ji6, etc) will give you back the bluetooth. Sound quality and battery life yet to be tested on my end, but seems encouraging based on my first two hours of having this combination.
i'm running phoenix 4.5 w/speed mod kernel T and i'm getting 30-35 hours out of a charge.

48 hours of testing: Cog 3.04 with its original kernel + I897UCJJ4 modem is working smooth. So far 27 hours with no charge and at 44% battery. This, after I recalibrate the battery without erasing the battery stats. Only challenge, is that it will randomly lag with certain apps, which it was not the case with firebird.
Phoenix Rising 4.1 W/Speedmod Kernal K12T-500hz
I am new to flashing roms but have tried about 6 different roms and variations. The above is like lightning and so far (2 days) 100% stable. I run on GSM only with WIFI off unless I need it, 60 to 80 emails a day. 89% battery after 6 hrs use so far today! Seems like the best so far and it flies!
I've had my NS for over 2 months now - love it. Since I bought it, I've been running completely stock android 2.3.3
Like most on this forum, I like to tweak settings and make improvements.
I just want to know if that if I were to root and load CM7 rom on the NS would it improve the speed/battery? (they are the most important factors to me)
Yes it would improve your battery life. Especially when you flash a custom kernel. With this combination, I currently get 24 hours+ with maybe ~30% remaining.
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/about/features are some of the highlights of the features.
Some benefits on top of my head:
Flashing custom kernel (I suggest you do, its easy)
- Voodoo Sound (Better sound quality, you'd be amazed)
- Voodoo Color (Don't like 2.3.3 colors? Change it back to <2.3.3)
- Overclock (If you're into that) or Underclock
- CFS or BFS
Kernel.. i'd go with Netarchy's 1.2.8 CFS
CM7 Benefits
- Widget Folders (When you add a widget, no more 5 widgets showing Beautiful Widgets.. instead its in a folder; better organization)
- Power Widgets (Notification Pulldown)
- If you use your NS as a music player, it adds a lot of features such as lock screen controls. Using volume rocker to adjust volume while phone screen not on.
- Custom Boot Screens
- Sync with Facebook

Thanks for your tips. Before I had my NS I had modded my Hero beyond belief!
Would it be easy to send the phone back to a stock ROM and stock kernel? Lets say I had to send the phone back to Samsung to get warranty repaired.
Following on to that question, which is the best way to root?
How's the stability of CM7 on the NS. I just upgraded from my G1 to the NS yesterday, and I was thinking of just running stock until CM7 goes final.

Yes all you have to do is download a nandroid backup of 2.3.3 or whatever that is stock unrooted. And thats it.
Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545
@Apre: It's stable. The latest nightly (#19) is more stable than RC2 itself. And dang G1 lol, I upgraded from a G1 last year in Juneish. Looking back on that phone now, the screens so small.
I have CM7 RC2 and i find that my battery drains faster. How do I flash Netarchy kernel?
Put it in SD and update it? or do I do it the ADB way by putting the kernel in the tools folder and with command prompt?
I ran stock for quite awhile after buying this phone because I didn't see any need for custom ROMs with vanilla Android. But I finally decided to give it a shot, and I'd never go back. Vanilla is great, but CM7 and all the other Custom Roms for the Nexus S (Axura, Modaco, etc) all bring more great features and customizations. If nothing else, however, I'd at least root and flash a custom kernel with stock - so you can have some overclock goodness
Edit: In specific reference to your post's questions, I run Axura, and I get both better battery life AND what seems to be a snappier phone (Axura has Netarchy 1.2.5 kernel baked right in). On CM7 I didn't notice much of a speed boost, and I think my battery life might have actually been a little worse, but CM7 packs in a lot of extra features. So it all comes down to preference.

yes. put it in SD, boot into CWR
flash .zip
and you're done.. its the same as flashing a ROM
and as far as battery life.. make sure you disabled latitude (automatic and that other feature) in CM7.. not sure if its still working even though if latitude is disabled, id disable it anyway

I was so happy with my stock NS that I'd not bothered with CM (my ROM of choice on Nexus 1) until just two days ago. In the first 24 hours I had two issues that I've not had, or at least not seen in a very long time.
First issue - I was at 84% battery after about 4 hours. Put the phone to the side of my desk and 3 hours later it was 100% drained to 0 battery juice. Status graph showed nothing unusual, not long wakelocks, no time without cell signal, screen on only 1.5 hours.
Second issue - 24 hours after install, while listening to a podcast with my long time app for those that's not given crash issues, the playback goes into a constant stutter loop for about 30 seconds, then the phone rebooted.
EDIT: a third issue, happening right as I type this. I'm happily tethered away on my laptop via the NS with CM7, but I just went to check something on the screen and the phone is locked up...won't respond to power button. Screen is black, menu buttons are lit. Still tethering me, though.
Seems there are still some slight issues. I did full wipe/format before installing and am on the stock CM7 kernel still.

It's an update.zip file you flash from CW recovery. I agree CM7 appears to be harder on the battery.

I suppose that you're technically correct that CM mods never go final because they're always improved, but all prior iterations of CM at least got out of BETA/ReleaseCandidate status at some point.
I fully expect that CM7 will eventually see a version that doesn't have a beta, nightly or RC tacked on to the end of it. Then we'll see all the .x releases with their betas/rc, etc.
I was going to hold off on CM7 until it was past RC stage because I feared it would have some issues, despite all the glowing reports, and it does, but not enough for me to go back to stock. Probably time to flash netarchy on top of this.

I haven't even activated latitude . I don't have background data enabled either. Not sure what is killing the battery life in CM7 ..
Also, if you're interested. Check out frank707's "NS Collab" ROM. It's basically CM7 without ADW launcher, which is good if you like using CM7 but miss the stock launcher or just frankly don't like ADW.

I have tried CM7 and felt that its bugs and constant state of upgrading and updating to fix things caused me too many issues for daily use.
I do think that CM7 does perform a bit better than the other ROMS due to it being AOSP based but i feel thats why there are also some of these bugs.
I have been using AXURA by Master and its been flawless for me, the one issue I had with a reboot was due to testing a new overclock, but now I keep it at 1200 max ondemand and it hasn't gave me any issues, The lack of full easy theme support like CM7 is a con but the performance is up there with CM7 and the stability is sooo much better for me, I feel this is because its the Stock 2.3.3 ROM that has been decomplied and tweaked and then compiled again.
Its worth looking at some of the other options as well.
Hey all,
I still conisder myself a n00b when it comes to all this, although I've somehow managed to get GB on my phone via Odin (the only software I know how to use!) from the dev section
Here's what I have right now:
Baseband version: T959VUVKG4
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-T5959VUVKG4-CL385158
Since the upgrade, the phone's been a lot faster, battery life has increased almost two-fold and overall the phone seemed to perform better. Only issue was the extremely low wifi calling.
In the past month or so, my phone has turned for the worst. Random reboots, even during calls, slow, buggy, programs closing, dropping calls etc. Overall, its a real piece of crap!
Ultimately, I`d like to know the EASIEST way to put GB on the phone, with the most reliable ROM and modem out there. I dont need anything fancy shmancy...just something rock solid, with good call reception, and, because T-Mobile sucks, I need WiFi calling to work properly.
All I really know how to use is Odin. Can anyone help?
Well...if you read any thread....any GB ROM u flash sucks ass with wifi. sorry
On a side note, some people have been getting improved wifi with the kj3 modem flash over kj1 ROM.

You should try FBis251's ext4 starter thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16762954
After following all the steps you can flash any GB rom you'd like
I know starting over is a pain in the arse, but take it from me it's DEFINITELY worth it. I'm running Valhalla 1.32 OC/UV and getting quads well over 3000 (not that it means anything ) and my phone has never been smoother. Plus switching between roms is much easier. No more factory resets

Yes, much easier after you read FB's starter thread. I've proudly flashed 3 or for times since adding a ROM with CWM. I'm running BSGS4G and dsexton's adrenaline shot and have no problems.

Honestly, as of now, I would go for either KH2, KI3, or KJ3. Those seemed to be the most stable of the GB releases.
Now for your issues:
Random Reboots: If you have a task killer, remove it and never touch it again. Android doesn't need a task killer. It kills necessary apps and causes your phone to reboot. I've been there before.
Voodoo: Make sure you have drhonk's custom GB kernel. Follow those instructions (for the parts that say adb, just reboot to recovery by using volume up, volume down, and power). Having the custom GB kernel will give you Voodoo support = lagfix = faster phone.
Speed: Be sure to let your dalvik cache rebuild every time you flash a ROM or do anything that wipes it. If it is not rebuilt, your phone WILL be laggy. Give your ROM 15 minutes to rebuild the dalvik cache, then start tinkering with it. To wipe your dalvik cache manually, you can go to CWM > Advanced > Wipe Dalvik Cache.
Bugs: Flash the newer GBs, like the ones I mentioned above, and it'll probably be better. WiFi still sucks regardless on all GB builds.
Dropped Calls: I'm assuming you came from stock KD1, and your signal was perfectly fine then? If that's the case, look for the KD1 modem on this forum and flash. That should fix up your reception issues.
I use Valhalla 1.1 with Dolphin Mini browser,
Adrenaline shot XIX and KJ1 modem.
You can ask me how to do anything, i will answer you.
Sent from me.
Well since you are on KG4 you should have the GB bootloaders so you should be alright to flash any GB rom using CWM. It sounds way trickier than it is. It is really just as easy as Odin.
Now unfortunately as mentioned above... The low Wifi signal is a problem with GB on our phone. If Wifi calling is a MUST... you will be better off on Froyo until an official update is released with improved wifi... but then you lose all the goodies of GB (battery life, speed, etc)
From what I have gathered on here in seems KI3 seems to work with helping peoples wifi signal but it is still not the same as froyo.

Exactly right. I'm using Valhalla 1.3.2(I highly recommend this ROM) with the ki3 modem and my wifi reception is as good as it will get on GB. I just wish Samsung would release that darn kernal for GB already so the devs can fix it ;P

Since you're already on kg4 with bootloaders just odin flash a root to it then get dr honk kernel with.voodoo.
thats for the tips guys!
My main issue with the wifi calling is not the wifi signal (its decent actually), its just the VOLUME of the wifi calling....it works, but I cant actually hear the person! I dont think this has to do with the wifi signal quality.
I appreciate all the tips...if someone would like to help me, step by step (you can PM me if you want), because all this stuff is confusing!

Also, should I expect a decrease in battery life or an increase?

I experienced lower battery life and performance issues.
From apps taking longer to launch to general lagginess of the rom. Other users have complaints about that in the various dev threads.
I started a thread in general about my downgrade to cm7. I have to say it makes the cappy feel new after using various laggy ics/jb roms.
But as with all things your mileage may vary. Not everyone complains about the upgrades.

Thanks, that was definitely something I was worried about. I actually recently started to use the Captivate because my old iPhone 3GS just ran terribly choppy (along with a much decreased battery life) with the newer iOS that was forced onto it so I don't want that kind of situation to reoccur.
I'm personally running the Slim Bean 2.1 rom which is Android 4.1. Other than the small bugs listed on their site, my phone is running butter smooth with no issues. As a moderate user to heavy user, my battery lasts pretty much the whole day and some. You just gotta follow the dev instructions and do your research.
I am currently running slim Bean, but I also ran slim ics. Which I felt that my phone has never run better on either of these two roms... Battery life was about the same for me between gb, ics, and jb.

One of the great features of ICS/JB is the battery settings option. From here, you can see what is draining your battery. When I flashed CM10 a few weeks ago, I noticed one of the widgets I used on CM9 was draining the battery big time (30-40%). So I disabled that widget and now I get battery life that is equal if not better then stock GB.
I've also ordred some 1800mAH batteries from Amazon which will definitely get me through a work day.
I'm currently Paranoid Android JB, and the battery life difference from 4.0 is negligible, but from 2.3, it's quite a change. As far as lag, it would be pretty bad if I was unable to OC it. Currently comfy at 1200MHz with the ondemand governor, and battery life is still better than GB.
I was stock GB for ages and had decent battery life. Then switched to CM 7.2 and had a horrible battery life. Switched to CM 9.1 and it isn't any better. So I ordered a 1800 battery, hopefully it will improve things.

Just as a mini update for anyone viewing this thread, i've tried both CM9 and Jelly Bean Lanight rom. Both have been pretty fast, haven't really seen any lag issues and battery is relatively the same.
ICS update to sgh-i897 captivate
I updated my ATT captivate SGHi897 to ICS recently from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22555425
I am bit novice here on ROM .version build etc. but its running 4.0.3 Build - IML74K eng.
I notice my captivate is now bit laggy in opening up cameraand some apps but not that significant.
Actually It has solved many issues when i was running gingerbread earlier with too many forceclose issues , choppy signal , calls dropping etc.
Also I noticed my network signal is much better and shows " H " instead of 3g earlier. I did not know captivate is compatible for H and not just 3g.
I did notice te browsing is much much faster than gingerbread. ginger bread was horrible than the previous OS.
I was bale to browse in the same places where I was not even getting any signal to make voice calls , the Signal reception is great with ICS now . Not sure how a OS can affect the signal reception.
over all i am happy with ICS on my captivate.
My battery is so awful, I already bought an 1800mAh battery but it didn't really seem to help

My wife runs cm9 loves it. Fastest ROM she's had. Swears by it. I noticed alot of roms only do 3g no 3g at home so it goes to edge. But cm9 let's her get 4g everywhere. I've been out of the scene since my cappy went swimming . I miss it very much! Great phone. Go cyanogen mod download gapps. You want galaxymtd btw.

The ICS browser has been reworked and made better. It is faster and a lot more stable than the GB browser. Signal quality could be due to the fact that the i9000 with ics has newer and better modems. Btw im looking at your link and i noticed that you flashed a rom from the i9000 forums. I would suggest that you flash a rom from i897 forums. Even though both phones have similar spec they are very different and that could be the cause of your lag.
Hi all
i had my OPO for 2 months now
and i decided to root my phone and try some custom ROMs and kernels since they're so popular , so last month i rooted my phone and take a spin on those famous ROMs and kernels ( partly is also the touchscreen issue and random reboots are driving me nuts ) i won't specify what ROM or kernel i am using though
first impressions when i had a new ROMs is that , there's nothing much that is different i though things would be faster snappier with a new kernel built in but ...my OPO did not , my phone did get more stable but it did suffer from multigesture issue once and force rebooted 3 times in the span of 1 month , but the biggest issue is that my phone keeps getting systemui has stopped working , multitasking button gets bugged one too many times , wallpapers constantly missing when i unlock my phone and animations are very clunky
so yesterday i decided to go back to stock just to remind myself how stock feels , using NANdroid backup i restored everything and...
stock 44s feels so much better compared to custom ROMs which begs the question
why do people deviate from stock ROM on OPO ? stock cm is pretty sweet , I understand rooting the phone to get xposed etc but custom ROMs just don't feel right on the OPO ...so is it just me ?
still props to all the devs out there , no offense just my 2 cents
I think if varies for the phones and locations, but I was getting some pretty beastly battery life, smooth/fast experience with vanir and Franco. For some reason I just didn't like stock and was not getting as great battery life. I've tried many things and some are good, but there are better (to me at least). I'm just running Lollipop now and can't seem to go back to kk.
It all comes down to ones preference really...

wait , isn't cm12 for OPO currently a little unstable? i really wanted to give it a shot but i fear that it is too unstable for a daily driver
Working fine for me; I don't think it is to the point where it can't be a daily driver. I'm really liking it so far, the Lollipop experience feels really nice and smooth.
Check comments from others on the threads to see the kind of issues they're having. Devs are doing daily builds so as days pass it gets better and better.

Sounds like you didn't do any kernel configurations at all to experience changes.
On AK, with Synapse and UKM, you can change numerical values to configure how the phone handles processes. Default kernel settings aren't optimum for every phone.
My settings consist of: slim (300-2457), CPU boost driver (10ms, 1574MHz, 30ms, 1190MHz), CPU Volt (-35mV), I/O sio @ 1536KB read ahead, drop caches, laptop mode, Vibrator at 25, Fast Charge at 1500mA, C1 (Retention) disabled, 120 second Wifi Scan interval.
With those settings, it makes a HUGE difference compared to stock, as well as fix bugs (screen artifact/tearing) before they were fixed on the latest firmware, and increases battery life by 1.5 times stock.

I have the same questioning but without any problems that you had/have/ My phone works perfectly ( crossing fingers ) and i've had it since July. I always used to ROM my S3-S4-S5 to get a new feel of the phone, but with the Oppo i don't see the reason to. Maybe it's because CM is pretty near pure stock Android, and that's what we get when we switch ROMs on big brands.

OP, it is not just you. Folks who mess about with custom ROMS, as the other posts here share, do so because they can customize the total phone experience, leaving things off, and putting other items on, to their liking. Giving that the background OS is stable, and the apps a person selects are stable, there should be little to no difference in 'performance', overall, due to the apps. However, you may get performance differences because there are less TSR's currently running in your system, so more memory is available, etc, which can make mainline apps run faster.
So many reasons to do custom apps.
As you said, and I agree, CM is a nice, generally smooth OS/ROM. I am coming from an LG G3, which I like very much, but to customize (remove all the junk), and fine tune (remove Google calling home = less battery live, etc), it take's some time to setup those conditions. With CM, most of the junk is not present at the onset (AT&T largely). Much more clean. I would like Google to be disassociated from CM completely, so that it is an add on only, providing better control of the base CM. I would like this in an official CM ROM/official variation.
That is the reason I have/am switching over to the OnePlus. I have tried a few custom ROMs as well, and the stock CM seems to have the best stability, reliability and consistency, to date. I suspect that will change when a large update comes out, such as L, and a great amount of energy goes into that development. I just changed from 38 to 44 last night on three OPO's. It took 5 minutes, or so, a piece, and all of the data/previous apps, setup etc, stayed with the updates, making for an all too easy update.
Awesome. Next will be "L". I will wait for the CM official, as that will likely be the most stable, as I suspect it is getting the most attention from the CM team, at this time. CM is a pretty nice OS.
