Update!!!
Looks like Drizzy and the Dream boys unwatermarked the dump and made a G1 rom out of it. I will try to talk to Drizzy and ask if I can have the unwatermarked dump but if not we should be able to re-port this back to CDMA and possibly have Hero 2.1. Just remember this wont work as well with our phone as the official one will but a little taste of an Eclair might be good

Hey guys, didnt know if anyone saw this yet but the Dream devs have a Hero 2.1 dump. Drizzy got it and is sharing it with a couple devs but no Hero devs. Not sure why yet but Im trying to find out. I would assume it's because of watermarking and once they get that worked out then they will release it to us. Some of the Dream users don't like us because we have more ram than them (yes, thats the only reason why) but the devs over in the Dream scene are overall good guys. Drizzy, KingClick, BarakInFlorida, Crykowski and the rest are all good guys so I'm sure once they work things out we will get ahold of it. Lox_Dev (from GSM Hero) is already trying so, let's hope and pray.
Does this mean that HTC already has sense skinned on top of 2.0?? If so, does the Hero 2.1 dump you are talking about mean that we could have Sense on 2.0 before its even officially released by HTC? (And even modified and optimized on top of that?!!!) I'm really excited if any one of your answers will be "yes".
I'm new to all this stuff, but I'm really enjoying it so far! Thanks in advance for answering my questions. God bless!

Yes, pretty much. First, I just want to say that Sense is not a "skin" it is an application but more than that, it is an application framework built by HTC. That said, it looks like HTC has created a Sense for Android 2.1, which hasnt even been released yet and someone from the inside of HTC leaked it out. Now, a Hero guy (E2K) was able to get it from Drizzy apparently but we are still waiting to see if he actually got it or is bsing us.
Also, please note that usually when an HTC dump is leaked this means that it is pretty close to release. They are just sending out to testers and fixing all the bugs. This means that HTC could be giving us a Christmas present soon. Also remeber though that after HTC releases it, Sprint still needs to work their "magic" into it so it may take a little longer than normal. Also, if your phone is rooted us devs will want to make sure nobody loses root in upgrading.
OMGAD release it then ! now
thanks for clarifing
dude thank you. im so tired of everyone calling "Sense U - fu*king - I (USER INTERFACE) its a app. Just like the Adv Launcher. If you dudes could get your mind over having some cool ram additive, rather than all the ammenities of the Dream, than you would realize that you could be running 2.0 like the rest of us, rather than 1.5, and have waaaay more bad ass **** on ur phones!
Examplessss
CubeUI - Samsung Behold 2
TouchWizUI - LG EVE
SenseUI - Hero, Rooted g1's
AndroidUI - Dream, Droid, ADP1, Rogers Dream, Etc....
See its all just a different setting for a different phone .. All thus running on Android OS. Its rather simple. LOOK OUT FOR 2.1
Thanks for the answers! That's great news! I'm rooted and flashed running FRESH 0.6. I plan on NOT getting Sprints update when it comes out, but getting it from you XDA guys in some optimized/tweaked ROM without all the crap they put in to bog it down. I'm so pumped! Thanks again for the answers! God bless!

Well just because we have Sense doesnt mean we can run other roms. In fact we cant. I have tried porting over tons of different roms to Hero and they never seem to work. Sense is good too. Personally, I prefer it over Vanilla Android. Plus, the HTC apps such as messaging and whatnot are better in my opinion. Personal preference. Once optimized, Rosie flies. Sense isnt bad. I just wanted to say it's an application. Not a skin or anything.
Regardless, hopefully we will have 2.1 soon
sounds Great Im excited...God Bless
Is it really that simple though? I imagine the dump is based off the Euro(GSM) Hero.

Most likely is. But 1.6 on up has native CDMA support. Either way, Lox from the GSM dream forums says that the guy who leaked the rom to us just will not give up his source which means that if we do get this we cant release anything. Looks like we are gonna have to wait a few weeks anyway. I also was reading that Drizzy just wasnt thrilled with this build. As it is beta (or *gasp* alpha) there is too much that isnt working. Good news is we know it's coming.

Hmm.. does this mean we could possibly see a build for our CDMA Hero sooner than we thought?
Exciting news! I'll be watching this thread closely for any updates. Also, like others have said, I will be coming here for an optimized/bloatware free 2.1 from one of the awesome devs who do great work for our Heros!

What does this mean for us? The possibility of cross-platform roms?
Dunno if this has already been posted:

Yeah I really can't wait for that landscape mode on home menu

Possibly, yes. One of the reasons it is so hard to port over roms to our phone is because it is CDMA. 1.5 does not have CDMA built in. For instance, try porting over any GSM rom and it wont work because HTC "hacked" in the CDMA support (i.e. built a custom driver). Since 1.6 and up have built in CDMA support the possiblity for us to make cross platform roms is a lot higher. Not saying definite. Just more possible.

Is there something "missing" from Google's 1.6 or 2.0 sources that a build of either of those prevents the CDMA Hero from running them at all? Or will they at least boot up and work with some stuff not working?
I tried installing it on my Sprint hero, well not 2.1 but the 2.0 that works on the gsm, it doesn't work.

Yeah. The kernel. I tried booting both but neither even bootup.
you still need to compile the hero cdma radio driver for android 2.x
As I was working on trying to port CM6/CM7, I realized that it is much more time effective for me to port the tweaks involved with CM6/7, rather than trying to actually port the whole thing. So with that in mind, what tweaks/aspects of CM6/7 do people like/would like to see on our phone?
Bear in mind that because CM7 is GingerBread, so although I will try my best, I can't promise that features from CM7 are portable. CM6 features should be portable, but I *promise* nothing, and will try my best otherwise.
Currently working on
An extra menu in settings to control all this crap
REQUESTS
:LED Settings that are actually helpful/useful (pending)
:Camera on Low Bat (pending)
:Customizable Power Notification (pending)
Requests that probably aren't going to happen
CM7 (until a GB source release from Samsung for our phone or a very generous donation that gives me a reason to spend a month porting a kernel)
CM7 Theme Support (built on the GB API, all themes are Gingerbread minimum API anyways).

i think the lockscreen gestures would be awesome
theme support would be cool ( dont know if thats possible)
led settings would be nice
I mentioned this to you before, but I thought i'd post here and see if anyone else responds: how about an optional flashable tweak, if possible, for those who want to be able to use their camera on low battery and don't want their screen dimmed and keyboard blacked out. (I know you can brighten the screen on low batt., but you have to do it every time after waking the phone from sleep). I believe on CM7 the phone simply functions normally until the battery dies.
I'll definitely look at the battery tweaks as that should be fairly easy to find, as for the theme manager, the issue is that its built from the GB API, as are all the themes. So even if the theme manager were ported, none of the themes would install as they would require a higher OS version
Customizable notification power control bar. What we have is decent enough. But I always liked that about CM series, being able to customize.
Touchwiz power control is good enough so no need to put this as a high-demand feature.
Are you still working on porting CM? I'd rather wait for CM than just flash tweaks every now and then.
I agree instead of porting u should at least try port cm6 which is froyo that would be awesome till we get a gingerbread kernel leak which krylon is looking into

Porting CM6 will take me at least another month. That's what I was working on the past 2 weeks, but its all the same problem. CM6 and CM7 both require a ported kernel (2.6.35), which is very tedious and frustrating given the parts that were added to our phone.
Yea I saw that when I was looking into it I'm trying to get in contact with a samsung team on xda see if the help us out to get this ported
Sent From My Rooted Sidekick 4g XDA Premium App
What I'm saying with this thread is, we can essentially build CM6 on our phones, without the official title and all the extra work in porting a kernel, if we just build the parts in that make CM6 different from stock.
So that's my goal, to add enough parts to this that it will be similar to CM6 in functionality.
That's a great idea I just don't know what we can use lol

The way I see it, although I love CM and would love to see it on this phone just as much as the next guy, I don't see a whole ton of stuff that's in CM that's not in our stuff already. So if I can focus on the things that people actually use from CM, I can build things that people want in CM, rather than trying to build CM.

Makes sense, considering you're the only one working on it, that I've heard. If it takes time to port a whole thing over, why not cut time down and just port that parts you love about CM.
Honestly, with the work you and ayoteddy have been doing for our phones, Cyanogen isn't a big deal to me. I mean, this may be off-topic, but the only things I do want are to completely eliminate that keyboard lag and to keep the keyboard backlight lit whenever open. Other than that, you guys have tweaked and optimized the phone so much already.
I haven't seen any keyboard lag, where do you see this? I'll look at the keyboard backlight thing shortly, currently working on an extra menu in settings to control all the tweaks I'm adding.
I'll also add a requests list to the OP shortly. EDIT: added.
When typing quickly some inputs may skip. I read the Samsung Epic had the same problem. That phone had a fix for the keyboard lag.

Ahhh! So it happens to others too. i thought i just was messing up..i was like..i never messed up before. yess, this happens to me too and it sucks. makes uo type ike tis. (missing letters, but not that frequent)
Yeah. Just like that. It's worse when you're typing on an app that uses more resources, like typing on a web browser on an html page. Or when the facebook app is refreshing the feed while you type a status.
I contacted the developer who made the keyboard patch for the Epic(he really fixed the problem up good on that device!). he made a similar patch for us, for the Sidekick, I've just been too half-assed about learning how to apply the patch to our kernel, lol.
you guys can read what he wrote and find the patch he made us here, at the end of the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=975611
apparently, our phone shouldn't suffer nearly as bad as the Epic, but he still made us a patch to make our keypad timer delay configurable by the user!
Edit: for some reason, the letter that skips the most on my phone is the "y", haha.
I don't know much about CM, but I'd really love the option to use landscape software keyboards. I am astonished that DSamsung actually chose to BLOCK THE FEATURE, een if we PAY to download a non stock keyboard.
The keyboard fix for the epic won't work for the Sidekick, because the change that was made to fix the epic issue was already there from Samsung
Possibly a noob question but since cyanogenmod7 is based off gingerbread an there is a froyo based cyanogenmod6 for the google G1 is it possible to do a port over to our phone since its froyo as well. I know drivers an such would have to be messed with but least we could have cyanogen on our phones even if its not the latest gingerbread powered version.
I don't know why people find cyanogen roms to be the be all end all of android. Not saying that I don't want them, but they're not the only thing that makes a phone good. CM6 is based off of the same kernel as CM7 which requires a newer source than we have.
Cyaongen mod roms are rubbish, they contain many bugs that are dealbreakers anyways. I know the devs are hard at work, but any current rom in these sk forums have far less bugs than cm. Cm7 on my mytouch 4g was horrible. Not belittling anyone, but just speaking from experience and hardships with those roms since the old g1 days.
Insanedrunk.....you are so ignorant if you believe Cyanogen ROMs are rubbish.
First off, the "ROMs" in the Sidekick 4G forum are nothing more than modified T-Mobile ROMs....that's all they are....nothing more.
Cyanogen and his team completely rebuild Android from scratch, that's why it's called "AOSP". Their ROMs require far more knowledge than simply zipaligning, deodexing, and deleting junk applications. If you have ever even attempted to build Android using the SDK, you would respect these guys.
You obviously are some n00b that doesn't even understand the concept of Android rooting and modding at all.
Please, if all you can do with Android is talk crap to legitimate developers, go somewhere else, you don't even deserve to type xda-DEVELOPERS into your address bar.
Sent from my stock, unlocked Sidekick 4G
Actually, AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project. It's plain vanilla android, from google's source. Yes, eventually into CM6 and 7 they got more hacky with it, but up to CM5, it was just standard google source releases patched together.

I actually have pulled directly from source, but for mt3g, still have my linux setup ready to go, does take time, still, I don't add **** code to my roms that cause memory leaks, I'm not as ignorant to the extent that in which you think of. I'm not brown nosing any self proclaimed douche bags either.... and if you frequent this site, you wouldn't have to constantly type it in your address bar, so noob? Maybe to the sk4g scene, but not to android.
Still, I would like to say I'm sorry if my post came off as rude as you thought, but I was simply.saying I think our sk4g devs can go a diffrent direction than cm.
Cm7 for defy is amazing. Cm7 was available for the defy long before any leaked gb was available. Even with a locked bootloader. I wish somebody from that thread was here

Then go find them. Don't just act helpless, if you really want someone from those threads to get over here, pay the $300 to buy a CM dev an SK4G. until then, be happy for what you have.
heard that ^

Ok so one Hey hows everyonne doing.
Two i know i have no place asking, im no dev like ayoteddy, sdu or Rev, but ive been reading and follow your roms and themes for a while ( pretty much tested all of them on SK4G).
SO heres my Question: Since Team ICSSGS got a pure AOSP ICS on the vibrant, could we port this over and load it onto the SK4G system?
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/team-icssgs-brings-pure-aosp-ics-to-samsung-galaxy-s-line-up/
NO FLAMES, just need a simple answer. =)
1) no gingerbread source kernal for our device
2) display diver for the kernal is really whats put a huge stop to developing
3) no love for the sidekick by samsung
4) I think the only way we could get a port of even that particular ICS would be someone giving up their sidekick to that particular dev team so they could go at it like a pack of hungry Parana .
I'm using teamhacksung v14 ICS on a cappy i was given I do miss once and a long while the benifit of 4g that i had on my sidekick but even with GOv2 an stock i had stability issues where my phone would end up useless while i was on a delivery from either -take 2-3 minutes from boot up to make a call to getting hot in my pocket ;-;
We won't get a port till a official version come's out.
When I had an HTC Sensation, and an HTC HD2 I flashed a lot of different ROM's never wondering if I would have wifi-calling, because I had a flashable wifi-calling mod. Since coming to this device, there are really only one or two ROM's that have wifi-calling built in. I am in no way complaining, by the way... I appreciate whole heartedly the effort the DEV's put towards this device.
With that being said, would it be possible to flash the mod I have from the sensation on to this device, or would it brick it...?
I'll post the ZIP if needed.
I doubt it would brick it but I doubt it would work either. Wi-fi calling is now built into Sense so it's not as simple as it used to be. I used to keep that apk handy too...
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using xda app-developers app
I just tried to flash it but it wouldn't do anything, kept saying ERROR 6.
Now I'm wondering if there's some way to extract the wifi-calling used in the Galaxy s3 (for example) and use it in a aosp, aokp, cm10 or other non-sense ROM.
I think I'll look into this, I want to get away from sense anyway, I'm really in love with the paranoid android rom.
