Does anyone know where I could get some microUSB charging cables with the D+ and D- data lines shorted already? (i.e. charging cable only, not for data).
Rather not take apart (Read: Destroy) my microUSB cables I use for data. I have USB wall-warts and USB cigarette lighter adapters which supports drawing 1A from the ports.

If your like me and still have plenty of mini usb devices around, you would be best off getting a mini to micro converter off ebay, these already have the pins shorted so my wife and kids can still charge up their stuff and its quite easy to pop on/off the adapter depending on what you want to charge.
There's an easy method to "short" the data pins.
You just need a short USB "leading" (6-12' or 15-30cm extension) cable, a piece of double-sided tape and aluminum foil.
stick the tape to the foil, then cut to the size that can cover both center pins on the jack side of USB leading cable, and plug the microUSB cable, that's it.
You can do the same trick for PSPGo stock USB cable too!

Buy a USB extender cable, cut the cable in half, connect the red from the plug side to red from the socket side, connect black from the plug side to black from the socket side, leave the white and green from the plug side unconnected (tape over the ends), and twist together the white and green from the socket side. Solder, then electrical tape or heat shrink all the connections. Now plug the cable into any USB charger that provides 700-1000mA, plug your micro-usb cable into the socket end, and plug it into your phone.

I've decided to make my own cables. Then using red heat-shrink tubing where I made the cut & modification so it would denote it's for "USB charging" only with the data-lines cut ("floating) towards the host and bridged/shorted on the device side.
I was going to make several of these so if there's enough interest, I'm willing to make several extra of these to sell for a nominal price if anyone is interested.

I have one of these, for charging only, which I have plugged into my work computer.
Picked it up at some store near where I live, in Hong Kong.
Had no idea it was just for charging (actually, didn't even know you could buy such cables).
I'm probably going to get rid of it though, as I would like the ability to transfer data as well.
You do know that your phone will charge twice as fast with that cable right?

Yep, the charge on the cable at work is really slow! But I'm not too bothered as it just sits there during the day.
Be aware of that, the phone may get hot when charging because more current is allowed to speed up charing.

Yes, it does get a bit hot.
In any case, like I said, I'll probably buy a proper sync cable instead in the next few days.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting up this info (for some reason thank button isn't showing for this thread). Ordered some USB extension cables today, can't wait to try this out. I've long been plagued with not getting enough juice my USB car charger, now I know why.
Edit: BTW, what's the reason for using the USB extender cable for this, couldn't you just cut an existing USB cable in half and short the D+/D- wires? I'm guessing you cut the extender cable so that you can disconnect the intact USB cable and then it would still transmit data if you desired?

You could do that too if you like. I have a big pile of 4" extenders from USB flash drives and wifi dongles and didn't really consider cutting up a microusb cable.

Just to confirm that I'm understanding the shorting of the D+ / D- wires together, the short needs to be on the side of the cable which is connected to the phone, yes?
The D+ / D- wires which are on the side of the cable plugged into the car charger just need to be covered w/ electrical tape and not touching each other when connected back together, yes?
I drew out a sketch based on your outline of what's connected back to what, and that's what I came up with. The shorting of the D+ / D- wires going to the phone must be how the phone realizes that there's not a data connection to be made, so instead will just look for max power? If the D+ / D- lines weren't shorted when connected to the phone (but instead just not connected based on the cable), would the phone just assume USB and charge slower at that point?

Yes, leave the charger side (USB plug) unconnected and preferrably insulated, and the phone side (USB socket) shorted. Before a USB link is established, both a USB host and USB device will set and check for different voltages on the D+ and D- pins to determine what's at the other end. This is just an extension of that and is safe for the device.

I've read about the power chord being very short, and wonder if i should get a usb 3 male to female extension chord.
I have an ipad, not the ipad 2, and the power chord is pretty short, so how does the tf's power chord compare to the ipad's.
I ordered one for a few dollars from Hong Kong. Just got word that it has been shipped, it will be here in 15-25 business days.. lol
It's not manageable, the way I see it. Basically, if you're charging your unit, in most cases you will not be able to use it. You have to see right beside the charger. It's super short. Shortest charging cable I've ever had. The 3 extra feet from the extension will work wonders.

If you're charging it just use an extension cord. Now plugging it in for data is a different story. I just use a USB hub. Not a big deal at all.

You didn't state the extension was a USB3 cable, it does need to be, as both the Transformer and the USB3 standard use extra pins (though they use the pins differently)
Exactly what kind of cable is it? My TF is out for delivery right now so I haven't seen it yet. There has to be some 3rd party cables out there.
I have a usb 3 cable on order from ebay, only a couple of quid, hoping that might do the trick until asus release official ones.

As the cable is too short, I attached an extension cable.
However, now it does not charge. If i connect the short cable that came with the Transformer, it charges fine. Any suggestion?
The TF101 "short cable" as you call it, is a USB3 cable, what has +5 pins inside. One of these pins control the 15V charging (the tablet takes 15V from the charger instead of the usual 5V USB), if it can not send the signal through, it won't charge. You need a USB3 extension cable what's pretty expensive though.

That is correct, because the transformer looks for termination of one of the usb 3 pins, if you plug it into a usb 2.0 or lower extension/hub it just wont work. You must have a usb 3 extension/hub, or, there are many DIY chargers that are probably cheaper than a usb 3 extension cable and definately cheaper than a usb 3 hub.
Even a usb 3.0 hub or charging station will not charge it. Usb does not provide the voltage required. Only the outlet adapter will work

Hi everyone... I have an asus tf700t and I was wondering if I can charge it using the belkin mini surge protector with usb charger ( w**.belkin.com/us/p/P-BZ103050-TVL )? I just wanna make sure if it would be ok plugging the usb cord straight to the usb socket of this belkin usb socket. I carry a lot of gadgets with me whereever I go so I kinda feel that it would be bulky carryng a lot of chargers for my cellphone, laptop... etc. Would this be safe? I just experienced last week someone's charger got toasted using a public wall socket using the original charger. Thats why I thought of buying a surge protector as well. Thank you.
Depends on what you mean. Do you mean skip the Asus wall plug and use the usb ports on this protector? Then the answer is no. The usb ports on any device you use to charge the tablet needs to be usb 3.0 and supply the needed 15v of power. All of the usb plugs that are sold are made for 2-5v devices. If there is one that does supply the 15v then I have not seen it and many people using this forum would probably love to purchase it. You've stated one main reason to buy something like this, limiting the number of plugs to carry around, but it's also like $40 bucks to buy another plug from Asus.
That 2-5v is enough to charge cell phones, gps units, apple products, other tablets that don't use a proprietary power plug, etc. It may supply a small trickle of power similar to hooking up the device to a computer while the tablet is powered off. That would take hours to charge the device and not what you are looking for. I think one of the advantages Asus went for in using usb 3.0 and 15v is the speed of which the device can charge. It is pulling more power and able to delivery it to the battery faster. That is my guess but it is limiting our after market choices.
Now if you mean use that as added protection and have the Asus plug plugged into it, then yes it will work. If you are concerned about pulling too much power through it then don't have the device hooked up to it and use all of the other ports on the protector at the same time. That little device does seem neat. I lost an a/c adapter for my laptop when lightening struck really close to my hotel. Fried the power brick but luckily the laptop was not damaged. At work and at home I use a power strip/surge protector when plugging in the tablet to charge.

Ok tnx for the input. Just wanted to be sure if it would not harm the device if I use the usb wire without the charger adapter that came with asus but rather plug the usb cable directly to the belkin usb socket. Being stated that the tf700t is usb 3 and 15v is needed, will the belkin suffice to charge the device using its usb slot for charging without causing any harm? The spec says in belkin mini surge protector is 5V/500mA each usb port.

It should work and do no harm, but it will be very very slow - maybe 5% per hour...

It's a USB 3 plug, and the additional lines are somehow used by the Asus charger for detecting the tablet and switching the voltage.

Oh! I was talking about the tablet. If the tablet had USB 2.0 why would the plug be of USB 3.0.
When I got my Asus TF700T I got one power plug and 2 USB to tablet/dock plugs. The first thing I was VERY disappointed about is how short the USB cord was. When in my bed I could not plug it in I had to use it off battery only due to the shortness of the USB cable.
I went out and bought a USB male to USB female cord to use as an extension cord and low and behold it would not charge both the dock and the tablet when plugged into the Asus supplied AC adapter. I am assuming the extra length might have knocked down the power from the AC adapter just enough to not charge both devices.
What you need -
1) Original USB to Tablet Asus TF700T cord
2) Any length Male to female extension cable. I bought a 7 foot.
3) A 110-220 to 12 volt 2 amp power jack(car jack) converter. This is the one I bought any should work with the same specs. http://www.ebay.com/itm/130962356608?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
This is a very easy "hardware hack" to do.
1) Pull off the 12 volt car jack at the end of the converter it will leave you with a + and a - cable coming from the power brick.
2) Simply strip off the male side of the USB extension cable disregard the 2 data cables and just use the + and - power cables. Solder/clamp/or connect and cover each connection with electrical tape.
3) Plug the USB cable into the female end of the extension cable that is connected now to the converter.
3) Plug in your dock and tablet and watch both charge at a decent rate. This gave me enough cable length to plug it in behind my bed and be able to have it plugged in and on my lap.
Also doing it this way allows you to not have to hack up your devices USB cable and you can still take it out of the female end for any syncing or traveling purposes.
Hopefully this helps someone else who has issues with how short the charge cable is for this tablet.
A USB extension cable does work, but you specifically need a USB 3.0 cable. 2.0 doesn't allow enough voltage to travel through.
All I did was buy a lamp extension cord for .99, plug the wall wart into it and plug it in the wall. Now it's close enough to the bed or anywhere else I might be.

...because the charger uses some of the USB 3 wires to detect the tablet and enable 15 V - with a USB 2 cable it detects only a generic USB device and charges it with the standard 5 V.
