Tethere/Hotspot speeds much slower? - Thunderbolt General

When im on a 4G connection my speed tests are 10-20 mb/sec, but if i tether my tethered device only gets aboutt, is that normal? Is the slow down my tethered device or the network?

Wifi MUCH Slower than 3G?

I have an LG Optimus Quantum, and for some very weird reason, the wifi is very slow. I have daily access to 2 wifi networks, home and work, and the phone behaves the same on both. Generally, in order to watch youtube or any other streaming video, I have to turn the wifi OFF or else the video never loads (or in rare cases where the video is small, it will eventually load).
The phone is not unlocked or anything, and I have had it for 4 months and it has always behaved this way.
My home network gets speeds of 17mb/s on a wifi laptop.
Using 3g right I am getting 120, 224, 224, 130 & 156 kb/s using Speedtest app after doing 5 consecutive tests.
Wifi tests 112, 130, 130, 142 & 130 kb/s using Speedtest app (to perform wifi test, I put the phone into airplane mode, then start wifi connection).
Anyone have any input here?
Could be a problem with the firmware? But I think that must be device specific because I haven't noticed that at all (Samsung Omnia 7).
Guess you'll have to see what fellow Optimus users are experiencing.
EDIT: Actually, I downloaded the Speed Test app and my WiFi download speeds ~300KB/s (apparently). Then did a speed test over my WiFi on my laptop and got ~2Mb/s (eventhough it's supposed to be a lot faster than that). So...?

Same for my HD7. My 3Mb/s DSL WiFi signal averages around 2500Kb/s on my iPhone, HD2 and PC. But on my HD7, the best I can get is around 300Kb/s speed with SpeedTest. It's the same for the data as well. And it isn't anything to do with the carrier.
EDIT - Actually I'm wrong, it's much slower than that. I was paying attention to the bar number and didn't notice the average number upon completion. Mine shows around 200Kb/s. One test was 191Kb/s and another was 212Kb/s.
I noticed this too with the Wifi at work.
At home the wifi is definately faster than 3g but at work the wifi is so slow i just turn it off and use 3g.
Does anyone think that there is a setting in the MFG menu we can adjust that would help?
OFF Topic: What App(Free) did you guys use to test the phone's 3G & WiFi Connection Speed...
Thanks.
Weird. I get my full 10Mbit speeds on my home internet, and full speeds at work and everywhere else I get WiFi. Much faster than the 3G, which gets around 2.3Mbit down on average.
I've got an HTC Surround on AT&T.
the speedtest app in the marketplace got horrible reviews, gonna try BandWidth and see how it does. Right now I'm on my mobile hotspot at work so I should be able to get a clean test as I'm the only one on it.
I have used mobilespeedtest.com in the past but heard it can be inaccurate too.
To the OP, I haven't had any wifi issues. Videos start faster on my home wifi (20mbps), than on my hspa+ t-mobile signal.
Ok, the BandWidth app (free in the marketplace) seems pretty accurate. On first run, I got 590 kbps which is consistent with time warner (aka sprint network) 3g mobile hotspot speeds. Really wish I got 3g t-mobile signal in my office....
I really think this free BandWidth app is fairly accurate.
Just did another test, this time using my mobile hotspot on 4g and speeds came back:
2.7 mbps down
0.47 mbps up
This is consistent with the crappy 4g speeds on sprint (what a disappointment wimax has turned out to be, but still much better than sprint 3g...)

It only works on cellular data networks. I'm needing to test the WiFi speed on my WP7. But, of course, I'm just using the trial version. Maybe the retail version works with WiFi.
Visiting tracert.org via IE on Wifi I tested as 6.18 Mbps (about half the 12 Mbps I achieve on my PC). On 3G I scored 1.74 Mbps in my house which doesn't exactly get the best reception.
This is on a US TMobile HD7.
I get 1,80Mbps on Wi-fi, when I get ~13Mbps on PC. It's poor I have to say, comparing my previous phones.

Nice! Thanks for the link, mate. My HD7 rang in at 2.61Mb/s. Which is exactly what it should be.
I've noticed this also especially in IE. Xda loads up much faster on my 3G than my WiFi. I also notice that is I turn off the 3G and use edge and WiFi it seems that the speeds should be at where they should be at using a WiFi connection. If I have WiFi and 3G on at the same time the speeds are slower....
Testest Tracert.org on my Focus & my Nexus One.
Focus:
3G: 856kbps download
WiFi: 1.4Mbps
Nexus One:
3G: 1.43Mbps
WiFi: 3.94Mbps
Something is definitily wrong here.
Same problem here exactly!
wi-fi: DL- 56kbps UL- 78kbps ping- 1218
3G: DL- 3106kbps UL- 1228kbps ping- 131
Device: Xperia Arc
On my previous phone, which was Xperia X1 I had much better results on wi-fi than on 3G. Also because X1 runs on WM6.1 there are settings to improve wifi performance, Android doesn't have anything of the kind as far as I know.
My modem is b/g, Arc has b/g/n. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
I wonder what causes this and what could be done to solve the issue.
I also have slow Wifi . ATT surround .
Mine is coming in at 36.03 Mbps with a download speed of 4.5MB/sec on wifi. I have an HD7.

Have you tried to update the phone, even if you just got it but this could be some kind glitch on the software which could easily be fixed by doing an update.

I agree, it could be easily fixed by an update if there was an update with the glitch fixed or any update for the Arc at all. I have since found that the wifi connectivity problem is caused by encryption. The Arc can handle WEP but using WPA or WPA2 the connection is painfully slow with a great loss of packets.
Doing a fix through PC Companion and reloading the whole system however doesn't work.

Wifi tethering speeds are slow.

If i run speedtest app on my phone I get 10+ down but when I use any of my laptops I get 1.5 if I am lucky. Why is this? Do other phones have this problem? Ive tried wireless tether and barnacle.
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest is more accurate. Pull it up in your phone browser.
Speakeasy on the phone shows 25 down more or less across 3 tests. My laptop wifi tethered to it using barnacle or wireless tether are both giving me about 1.5 down.
Does anyone get good speedtests tethering? Or are we all getting the same result?
I even tried verizons hotspot tether which still works and its not any faster.
So frustrated. I bought this phone (and Verizon) only for tethering.

wow that is exceptionally weird. I do not experience that at all. I actually did a test between wireless tether and the verizon apps on the 7th deciding if and when i wanted to pay the unlimited 30 and saw faster download on wireless tether but very slightly faster upload on the verizon.
try toggling the radio or just do a nice reset of the phone for test purposes
Yeah, I haven't had any problems either. I get 15mbps+ tested on my laptop using wireless tether 2.0.7, which are typical speeds for my area.
Edit: I'm at work, where I only get 3G service and just ran the speakeasy test. Again, on my laptop over wireless tether 2.0.7 and got just over 2.5mbps.

[Q] WIFI speed on G2x

Does anyone have trouble with wifi speed on their G2x? I have been averaging 32mb to 60mb (hard line) on my PC, yet I have been having trouble getting over 1mb (wifi) on the phone. When connected the phone says excellent connection and lists the link speed as 65mb, but when I test it reads about 1mb. It doesn't seem to be running all that quickly when on wifi either. I tried turning mobile data off in case their was some confusion with the 4g and wifi displaying at the same time, but it didn't seem to help.
Same issue with the wife's phone. I rebooted the router and phones and didn't seem to help.

You have 4G and Wifi displayed on the taskbar at the same time? That is odd. Are you runing a custom rom? If I turn on Wifi it shows wifi and the 4G is replaced by the Wifi symbol.
WiFi speeds
I often get near 20Mb/sec from WiFi on my G2X through my 20Gb/sec FIOS connection and the FIOS wireless router. (No SIM card in the phone; haven't tried it with a SIM card). That compares to no more than 6Mb/sec at the same location from my Nexus One and MyTouch 4g.

Stock everything.
Yeah I had it happen quite a bit on froyo and it stopped for a bit on GB. Now it has started to run them both at the same time again.
I believe others have had this same issue.
I am always getting about 20 to 25 mb/s on my 50mb/s Comcast line. For a phone, that is more than enough. At that point your going to have bottle necks from the hardware.

I will average 3mb short of what my actual connections so hardline I get on my computer about 17mb down and on my G2X I get about 14-15mb down, but I have a ****ty wireless router... I'm fine with it lol

Try force stopping Market or T-Mobile My Account app. I noticed when I was running stock that when 4G and Wifi were both displayed in my status bar, killing those apps would make the 4G icon go away.

I haven't speed tested my pc since I got the skyrocket. I am living out of a hotel right now for work.
EDIT: What are you wanting me to test? My wifi phone speed vs. my comp speed on the same wifi network? Or my comp speed while using it tethered to my phone?
The answer is yes wifi tether will give you slower speeds than the speed on the phone... The same reason direct connection ethernet is faster than wifi

[Q] WiFi will not Connect Faster than 54Mbps

So, I've just spent the last few hours watching football and reading through a bunch of threads regarding WiFi connection issues with the N5. Well, here's another thread about a specific issue. I'm not seeing anything over 54Mbps connection to my Netgear R6200 with firmware V1.0.1.48_1.0.37. I'm connecting to the 5GHz SSID, I'm getting a solid 300Mbps connection on 3 other 5GHz devices (my laptop, desktop with USB WLAN adapter and the wife's laptop), my freebie Samsung Galaxy Victory is even mocking me, connecting to the 5GHz SSID at 135Mbps! The N5 just refuses to connect at anything above G speeds, nevermind AC speeds. I've done a factory reset, not restoring backed up data, I've tried disabling mobile data when connected to WiFi, I've tried every 5GHz channel, I've restarted the device, I've even tried using the 2.4Ghz SSID. Nothing. I'm about 8 fee from the router, no walls between me and it. Actually, I'm staring right at it as it sits there, chuckling at me.
Anyone have any ideas? If it's the router, then fine...should I buy the Asus to get true AC speeds from my N5? It matters to me for internal video streaming from my HDHR, and ripped blue rays, moving large files back and forth and other bandwidth-critical activities. For basic web surfing, it's not a big deal at all.
Well my N5 right now is connected at 72Mbps (2.4GHz) and 150Mbps on 5GHz, so it's not limited to 54Mbps...though why yours is I have no clue.

Yup, I tried 5GHz only. Hmmm, I may have to look into that router. The R6200 is a decent AC router though, but it would not be the first time that different manufacturers have taken different directions with a proposed standard.
Go to Wifi go to settings Uncheck Wi-Fi optimization
it will make it go faster (with a heavier battery drain)

It's certainly not the N5, I have a Netgear D6300 router and my N5 is connected at 433Mbps on the 5GHz band which seems to be the maximum link speed for the device (my HTC One also connects at 433Mbps max). My desktop and laptop connect with a max speed of 866Mbps.

Ditto. I get same results on same bands. Asus RT-N66U router.
Thanks for all the input folks. From what I'm hearing it looks like something screwy with the router and the N5 combo. Not surprising but disappointing. Was kinda hoping that some would see this and chime in with "oh, I have that router too and just changed this setting and bam!". Oh well....time to look for a new router. :fingers crossed:
Got same 433 mbps as rider Which He says should be max for our device. Thought I saw only 300 not that it makes any difference.
But Op is there a way to try connecting to some other 5ghz or same router some place else to see if it's because of the phone your router or combo of two
try 'FORGETTING' All your wifi settings, disable data, reboot
login 5g or maybe it's better to use WPS
test, good luck it worked for me
I have precisely the same problem using a Netgear R7000. My other devices connect at up to 450Mbps but my Nexus 5 won't connect above 54Mbps. Very odd. If anyone has found a solution or even an explanation I'd be happy to hear from them.
