[Q] No More 720p Playback on Froyo ROMs? - Defy Android Development

Hi,
I just recently flashed stock leaked UK Froyo. When I tried playing my converted 720p (mp4 format), it's not working anymore. ALL my mp4 720p resolution won't work. When I was still on 2.51/ 2.59, they do play pretty good. No hiccups or what. I dunno why but did Moto removed video codecs? Please help. Thanks.

There was NEVER 720p Playback on any Defy froyos...
Maybe you flashed the 720p playback.zip before you updated your Defy...
If you want to get 720p Playback again just search on XDA itself and flash the .zip with Custon Recovery.

On stock Eclair (SEA 2.51/2.59 or UK 2.51), you CAN play 720p in mp4 format. I converted some videos to 720p mp4 format at a video bitrate of 2000-3000kbps and it plays very well. I have never flashed to any custom roms or updated playback.zip or anything. I only use stock.
Anyway, thanks for the post above. Will try it later.

Nice.already tried & it works. Thanks.

As the Defy has a resolution lower than 720p, what would be the benefit of being able to play 720p video; Just not having to convert the video to a more suitable format, or am I overlooking a benefit I have not thought of?
*update* I see antibyte mentiones that video playback is not smooth on 2.1 - is it not smooth on Froyo with this package either?
No need for convert files.
Maybe later we need it if we could 720 Video record enabled.
Err, the description is not clear. ={antibyte}=- says his files are for froyo, and eclair already had 720p codecs. So is it from MS2 or eclair?

i read first that antibyte only test on uk 2.51.
@ 1200 Mhz it is ok. but i think the stock player is not the best will test some players from market.
I will test, copy video file to NAND.
UPDATE: Better video performance if file was copied to NAND
a player with buffering would be better, do you know one?
at least now we can play high profile h.264 videos with resolution 480p.

yes but it uses software decoding so it plays worse than stock player and is not smooth.

True, i have tried with vplayer, but now it is worse than stock player...
I remember that rockplayer had an option for choose between hardware decoding or software decoding. Im going to try this, could be better than stock.
It's only for froyo?
I have tried with stock player this video:

you beat me to it.
libs taken from uk2.51&ms2(that i have) have slight problems (random blocks).
I'll try your libs and report back in a few.
Ahhhhhh. Still the same, tearing and blockage on some clips (was fine on 2.51).
I'm gonn try replacing more libs later.

[Q] HD video playback

Hi, I got te g2x for almost 2 months now, and now I got a hdmi cable and thought about playing some HD and Full HD videos on my TV.
Im my current rom (SINGH-UI) and player (BS-player) only HD .mp4 videos play nice, mkv plays with some problems, and cant play 1080p videos at all.
Anyone know of a good combination of rom+kernel+player that can play 1080p videos? or at least mkv HD?
Thank you very much, and sorry if it has been asked before, I did a search but not found all the answers.

I use MX Player on any ROM I use, no issues. Use software decoding, uncheck deiinterlace, and set CPU to use from default to 2.
Thanks, will try that and edit the results
Also is the pro version worth it?
Edit: Now I can play Mkv perfectly thanks =), but some 720p and 1080p mp4 still gets laggy/desincronized some times.

I don't use pro. The free edition does everything I need from a video player. Sometimes just play with the settings and you can get a video to play correctly.
So it's better, same, or worse?
Ahh its definitely better, will play with the settings a bit and see what may chance.
Thanks for the help

[Q] A question which i can't find a proper answer for. Answers in first post.

So what is high bigmem and bigmem? I know that it gets me more usable ram with a sacrifice of something. For example my 720p mkv video playback was broken. Was it becasuse of the rom or the kernel? I came from stock rom. On the stock rom I could watch "How I met your mother" 720p mkv but now I can. So the question is. How can I get the HW accelerated 720p mkv video playback back without losing vodoo sound and others? I tried non high bigmem versions but just didn't work. Any help would be much apriciated!
Edit:
Here's the answers in case anybody come across to this problem in the future. It was kernel related. To be exact it's bigmem I think. I've installed the stock ROM (with stock kernel ofcourse) and the video just started using the hw decoder. smooth 720p mkv. No lag at all. With subtitles. After that I installed a kernel with bigmem ( marmite 5.1 stock edition) and the video playback no longer worked. Now I'm using stock ROM with Simple kernel. Damn! I didn't know the stock ROM is faster than the AOKP one.

thanks for the tip but it didn't work for me. I can hear the sound but no video. After a few seconds the player freezes. Nowhere near compared to the stock. Anybody please help. I don't know whether it's the rom or the kernel. I'm using rasbeanjelly with marmite v5.

try air kernel or matrix
or it maybe the case of just re-flashing the ROM

I'll try matrix kernel! I've used air kernel for about 2-3 (when new version came out I upgraded immediately) but I could not watch 720p mkv either. I really miss 720p mkv playback feature but I just don't wanna go back to stock. So all my hope is in matrix kernel

yes it's really cool! Latest rasbean jelly is 4.1.2. I would flash the stock rom if it had volume rocker music controls. it's the only thing which is holding me back.
On my Vibrant which is the same hardware, I use MX Player, generally h/w acceleration for video and set audio to software decoding. Play most MKV with no problem. The older version 1.6 also have a fast software mode that make it capable of playing almost any videos smoothly, but they took it away with the new version.
The bitrate of the video and your internal storage read speed do determine the playback smoothness.

I'm using mx player too but it only plays that in software decoding mode. When I choose hw decoding mode it says that it cannot play it in hw decoding mode. Hw+ decoding mode won't work either. Tomorrow I'll flash back the stock rom with different kernel. See if it works.
Ps: Matrix kernel didn't work either. No hw playback.
It means the player do not have codec to decode that video, maybe you should reencode it to h.264 in mp4 container.
Also I recommend keeping a copy of the MX Player 1.6, it can even manage most hd video in software fast decoding. Sure it won't be highest quality, but the Nexus screen isn't exactly HD.

Playerpro music player has volume rocker controls.
If I recall correctly while the vibrant has basically the same hw it also has different hw. Including decoders. Like with the missing encoder for 720p video recording with the camera for example.
Can't remember exactly but I think it was Samsung with the galaxy s line that was able to play back mostly anything because they included encoders and all the licensing that goes along with it. Then again maybe not. I'm sure others know more or you can just investigate it yourself

Watching 1080p video on a 1280x800 screen is like trying to listen to 5.1 audio out of your phone speaker. Pointless.
As for 720p, use Dice player. Works flawlessly for me on CM10 @ 1.4Ghz.
Regards.
for 720p also try moboplayer, works great with subs also...im with the same rom like you!
It all depends on how it was encoded. Mostly the profile used, I believe the XOOM supports upto 4.1 or 4.0. But profile doesn't mean jack in my opinion since it's just info on how it was encoded, what is important is the way it was encoded. Also I believe it has strict limits on the numbers of --ref frames it can play back, I say 4 or 6 max and it also can't play in 10bit. That explanation was pretty basic...

[Q] (SOLVED) Choppy video JB (parandroid/slim/etc)

After installing JB on Rogers Infuse 4G all mp4, avi video is unplayable, too choppy and stuttering. Works perfect on GB roms. Was looking around and could not find a fix for it (something to do with memory usage? as per Galaxy S forum). Any ideas?
SOLVED..
after reflashing a few other roms -> one has to remove external sd during flash, this seems to fix playback (flash and mx player etc.) problems. Thanx all for help.

Any Custom Rom <> stock GB have choppy video is a bug sorry, try another ROM.
Just a swag - have you tried putting the video on your internal memory instead of external sd?
I usually play streaming video (eg. TV series online). Any custom GB rom I tried has perfect picture, any ICS or JB rom is unwatchable. Could somebody suggest a JB rom that has verified good video playback on Infuse?
I have never had a problem watching videos on any GB/ICS/JB ROM...video playback has always been flawless whether it was a YouTube video or streaming from another site...or a downloaded HD movie...they've all played flawlessly....now videos I record while on JB/ICS that's I different story...but everyone knows about that...
If you don't mind...can you link me to a video you find unplayable on jb? I'm curious as to see if my infuse will play it...

Ok so hopefully clears this up. For movies that you download, you can get mx player from the app store, that thing plays EVERYTHING. and flawlessly too. so there get that. If u want to watchseries.eu or online streaming sites, u need flash player, so download this guy http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705503 and get version 3.0.3 This version contain flash player, which u'll need to watch stuff like that and yourtvseri.es etc.
For recording, just use 480p, cause 720p is broken on jb. good luck dude.
