Android 3.0 - T-Mobile LG G2x

Has anyone played with Honeycomb yet?
Rooted LG-P999 with CM7 Build 3

I have. UI takes some time getting use too. Doesn't show much performance improvement. The worst part of honeycomb is the lack of buttons. You literally have to tap the screen to go to the home screen...grr
Wait...what does this specifically have to do with the G2x Android Development?....It would make sense if this was in Android General... :O

LG-P999 CM7 Build 03

LG f-d up Froyo, CM7 is working on a stable Gingerbread build, and LG is threatening to release a Gingerbread build that's going to fix the dozen problems their Froyo build created. So, the answer to your question is no. I think getting a stable version of anything mainstream on the phone is what everyone is focusing on.

I really am kind of a "the glass is half full" guy but I'm a bit skeptical. The problems we're experiencing on the G2X are the same as those who got the O2X six months ago. Assuming there was a four month development period on the O2X that means whatever is wrong with the s/w has been in place for ten months. It also took months of hammering by our European brethren before LG even publicly admitted there was a problem with the O2X. Knowing in advance the O2X had problems I got the G2X anyway thinking LG couldn't/wouldn't allow a repeat performance. We all see how that turned out. Unless LG hired away top HTC and Samsung programmers to build their 2.3.3 ROM the question of quality is a good one. I really really want LG to redeem themselves and I hope they do. Perhaps Paul would be interested in relocating to Seoul?

To explain the negative feedback you've gotten thus far, porting to the Thunderbolt is far more complicated than to the Droid 1. The part of the OS that interacts with the radio is (as of yet) unique to the Thunderbolt and essentially has to be reverse-engineered. Slayher and toastcfh are working on a port of CM7 but it is an extremely difficult project for this reason. It's a whole different ballgame on this phone. Nothing to do with the amount of love for it. If there were no love for it, Slayher would not be working so hard to develop a port of CM7.
Who are you referring to? Verizon or the modding community? Verizon continues to hype their 4G network and the Thunderbolt with it. I'm sure HTC has Android 2.3.4 so we'll see what they do with it. The modding community has been pretty good about building off the most recent AOSP builds, but with the Thunderbolt having the 4G radio it has taken a little longer. Give it time. The OG Droid has been around much longer and more people own it than the Thunderbolt. As people upgrade you'll see more and more development for this phone. Personally I'm very happy with how quickly the Thunderbolt was rooted and how quickly devs started tweaking things.

Official updates? Probably not till later this summer and who knows if it will be 2.3.3 or 2.3.4. We'll likely see if in CM 7 long before an official OTA

Considering the fact that this phone has barely been out for a month and a half i think the dev is going pretty good. I think that's why people are giving you crap for this post.
There's a few threads on getting 2.3 working on the thunderbolt so its a wip at this point. Htc is supposed to release 2.3 "soon" anyways.

Hey, don't knock the OG Droid. That was a great little phone. It was my first Android phone.
The only reason I made my comment is because all the OP needed to do was click on TB development to see all the ROMs and support for this device. For only being out a month, there's a crazy amount of support.
OG Droid still rocks, I have one in front of me.
But dude obviously doesn't remember the wait for 2.1 on the OG.
put a nice silicone cover on it (sexual references meant) then show it love!
Only then can it be shown proper love .... lol
Sorry had this coming <<<<<
Anyway The Devs Are Doing The Thunderbolt Much Justice and are working and slaving for this device so there showing the love

Where are all the ROM devs?

I see a couple people but where are all the roms? google even released 2.3.4 source but I haven't seen the explosion of developement for this phone yet. despite a few issues this phone is one badass phone. after i got one without screen bleed and really sunk into it this phone is better that any android i've ever used and has features the Samsung Galaxy S 2 won't have such as nvidia tegra 2 which in my opinion is a much more solid piece of hardware and a much more well known company than the one on the SGS 2. and Smartshare, Ultra dolby digital mobile!!! this phone is the ****! plus i heard bionix was coming to this phone via team whiskey! I see faux released a rom and he doesn't even have the phone! we have a good start but....
Where are the devs!!!??? please we need you people. you guys make phones these expensive things worth purchasing for the insane amounts of money they cost. oh mighty development lords, please develope!
its called patience.

I agree development is slower than I'd expected..
I was gonna make a ROM, but the stock ROM with Titanium Backup is best for me. If you build AOSP you lose the awesome Camera app that LG wrote and you lose all the cool apps that come with the G2x.
For me I just uninstall the apppack app and freeze the wifi calling app and I'm good to go.
I tried the GB build and it had GPS issues and didn't have the nice camera app.
So I'm happy with the stock setup with a few tweaks.

It would help if anyone could build a kernel from the lg source that didn't break wifi and bt. All attempts have failed.....

i agree. guess i feel spoiled from all the vibrant support. i figured this phone would explode fast in dev. since we had root so fast and dual core, plus being a google phone. hopefully t-mobile gets off their ass and releases the official gingerbread like they promised before i purchased my phone (which was the ONLY reason i even was ok with purchasing an android 2.2 again). maybe that'll fix the problem ttabbal was talking about with the kernels.

Ice Cream Sandwitch / Android 4.0 Roms

Sorry if this is a dumb question. As i dont know how Roms come to be or how people port stuff from one phone to another etc.
But my question is, once Android 4.0 is released with the Prime. Will there be Android 4.0 Roms for the G2X. And if so... Will it take long?
If there wont be. I might have to switch to Verizon and get the Prime.

Yes, i'm sure once ICS source code is available our devs will port it over to our devices. With ICS being delayed probaly till end of November it's just a waiting game now...
I dont think it will take too long. I guess it depends how fast the devs get it and create one.
I had a Milestone 2 with a locked bootloader and it finally got Gingerbread but I think G2x is unlocked and easy to create.
Im sure it wont take no time to Cyanogenmod to stark working on ICS
I'm sure we'll get it. Thanks to guys like faux and the cm team, we already have an aosp base. I'm sure there will be drivers that need to be written/re-written, and bugs to work out, but we'll get it. Plus, I'd put money on the fact that once the source code for ics is released, the cm team will start integrating the newer version into cyanogenmod. We probably won't get it right away, and we definitely won't get it officially from lg or tmobile, but I'm sure we'll get it eventually.
Once CM8 is released, it should be released on the G2x along with other devices. I just hope we can disable the software Home & Menu keys.

Android 4.0 is suppose to be compatible with all android devices within 2 years old, and manufactures have agreements with Google that there should be official releases on all these devices. I highly doubt that will happen.
Also, the next Nexus device, by whatever name, won't be exclusively Verizon. It may for a period, but the FCC Documents show that it does in fact HAVE AT&T/Global AND T-Mobile 3G/4G bands, and no LTE.
Wait for official announcements on the phone, but I can guarantee the G2x will have 4.0 one way or another.
The agreement to update all devices for 18 months its for devices released post-ics. We're not eligible, though we will probably get CM8.

from what I hear MR. CM himself uses the g2x as his personal device so I think it will happen prety fast probally faster than others. I could be wrong about that I read it on a fourm when the g2x was still new. You never know how reliable those sources are.
I heard he got a job with Samsung. Though I speculate nVidia will release drivers since so many devices use the T2 soc
Not too worried since the g2x community has a lot of talented and smart developers already
I would expect an official upgrade as well though, seriously its a google experience phone, while not the top selling it has the specs and what not to get the upgrade.

OK so the hold up now seems to be LG right? in search for lg device drivers?
I think its ready for a ALPHA test now.. touchscreen works 100% and so does the radio wifi etc.. hardware acceleration wont be coming anytime soon but i can live without it for now
There are a lot of things that will need to be ironed out before we can even consider a beta.
First hand, without hw acceleration the phone crawls.

Hope you can get HW acceleration to work soon. Can't you do whatever other roms like cyanogen mod did?
Its not like they got exclusive access to tegra drivers...
The problem is the binary blob implements hw acceleration according to the way Gingerbread expects it which is different than how Honeycomb and ICS do it.
I've seen at least one person talk about rewriting the library from the android side to match how the nVidia blob works. Which would be a good backup plan if LG renegs on the ICS update for our phones.

I understand it's not as easy as copy paste source code, but the strategy should be the similar. I've never done any low level development so I'm just shooting in the dark here.
Also cm9 is expected in 2 months and I assume it will support the g2x. I wouldn't count on lg for anything. So rewriting the library is probably the best bet.
Glad to see so many new people jumping on and helping out. I'm sure most people here would help if they knew how.
Thanks for the work, guys! Where can we donate?
I've been a lurker on these forums for a long time and never realized I had to have 10 posts to post in the developer forums, so at least I can post in this thread. I will be getting up to speed on the ICS source over the next couple days and hope to join the effort in development of the port to the g2x as soon as I have my dev environment up. I'll be sitting in the IRC channel to ingest the info on where you guys are at so that I can jump in and help with any parts (sound maybe?) that you guys need assistance with.
Great job so far, hopefully I can be of assistance.

Not everyone immediately understands the implications of this. No need to ridicule. Can someone explain practically if this means anything new for P999? I thought that once this happens it would be easy to get it working for us.
This is really good news for us. So far no one has been able to create a working build using the SU660's kernel source. The P990 Kernel source will likely play a lot more friendly with our device (P990 & P999 are a lot more similar than Su660 & P999); hopefully we can get something working. I'm very optimistic that we will get fully working CM10. Here comes the excitement!

I feel you on that...lately, all I ever seem to do here is get in a thread, smh and hit the back button...sigh
This is awesome news! I just upgraded from an Optimus V to a G2X two days ago and then this happened. Hackfest is working pretty well for me already so it can only get better from now on.

But it's the real deal this time! The 2x actually had the official release without the su660/korean version.
But then again I feel you, when entering the g2x threads im constantly already feeling that nothing has changed.
Only time will tell.

Story of our lives, isn't it? :highfive:
As far as from what I can remember there couldn't be a port of lg ui 2.0 from p990 because it was requested quite a few times back when there were developers on the g2x and it either was extremely hard or couldn't be done, and the ICS update released today is lg ui 3.0 so I think its gonna be a lot harder than it sounds guys but I hope its possible because my dad still has a g2x and I would want for him to enjoy what android has to offer these days

Nobody is going to port the lg ui, only use the drivers from the p990 source to make a working cm10

I hope so. RC is ignoring the P999/G2X at this point and won't tell anything about if he will do anything for it. He has taken the P990 off his list and hasn't indicated he will resume CM10 for it.

He's really talented and good at what he does, but the communication is non existent. I wish he'd take a couple minutes to say if he has any plans for us.

It's just simply not constructive for arcee taking time out of each day to address tardates on each new thread criticizing, suggesting, making false speculations about his work on the 2x project. It's like he's driving around to the candy store and we're a bunch of little kids in the back of the car screaming ARE WE THERE YET? ARE WE THERE YET?
It makes a sane man want to drown a baby. A good parent would simply turn around and go back to the gingerbread house and make us goto bed early. Since he's likely to receive praises that would make Jesus's wine crafting look like the art of nubcake, he surely wouldn't hinder the progress but he has GOT to be sick of the moaning, groaning, and complaining that exists in EVERY SINGLE THREAD here.
Face palm is right. I have to wear a muzzle while staying updated on this forum, I've broken my nose twice and it whistles when I breathe. Thanks guys.

I think you're overreacting to a little thing. Yes, everyone should patiently wait but you're making this a bigger deal then it needs to be. Sounds like you're saying this just for karma and for a little appraisal like, "OH MAN WHAT A GOOD ROLE MODEL KIDDECKS IS EVERYONE SHOULD BE LIKE HIM" All they really said was that he doesn't communicate as well as some other people do. There are people that constantly post their updates and some that don't. It's just something someone said. Plus, if you read those 2 posts closely nobody made it a big deal. Someone said "I wish" and the other person said "no big deal" Nobody made it a big deal... You overreacted...
Anyways, I'm going to be following this thread closely to see if there's any USEFUL information. So stop posting useless stuff like this. It just takes up space and nobody wants to see it.
There's a dev who posted what he has so far of the CM10 kernel and so far it's great. Not sure if he did anything with the P990 update though. Still, everyone's being patient and it's great. Nobody is rushing anything. I think P999 users are used to waiting. It's been, what, 410 something days since ICS was released? A few more months really wouldn't even matter at this point.
RC did communicate about the timeline. It was very clear and completely appropriate. I wouldn't have lasted half as long as he did before I blocked out all the whining and screaming "supporters" and left the park to go back to my own sandbox and play with my real friends.
He was getting hundreds of useless messages and comments on anything he touched so he said f this. Now it's all third hand.
RC has kept awesome communication throughout all his work and if you have any beef with this then your an deltitne tihs.
