[Q] New Tab Using Keyboard Dock - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Random question... is there a button on the dock that any of you can find that when you click on a link in the browser it makes a new tab out of that page? for exmple, on windows when you hold down the control key and click it makes a new tab. I tried this on the keyboard and it did not work. Thanks in advance.

I don't have my dock yet, but I'd try ctrl+T

That makes a new tab, but thats not what i'm trying to do. I want to click on a link and make it turn into the new tab.
Example- when i am reading XDA forums and want to open a link someone posts but dont want to leave the forum, then on a windows computer i would hold CTRL and click the link.

Ohhh sorry... Either way I'm very interested in the solution to this.
Sent from my Asus Decepticon using Tapatalk

Well, in regular android with touch controls you can long press on a link and then choose "open in new tab", so I guess that would work with the touchpad too. That's all I can think of though.

Try holding CTRL + Shift key then click on the link.

Shift Ctrl does not work, nor does just shift.
The other really random annoying thing that is you can not rearrange your tabs in the native browser. Oh well. Not the end of the world. Hopefully they will push a patch to fix it.

just longclick a link.

I'm sure more 'desktop' like functionality will be added as more Gingerbread tablets get out there. It will not surprise me at all if other manufacturers make keyboard docks like Asus did.
Tablets will get more and more functional, more powerful and usable. Many people will eventually be able to replace laptops and desktops with them.

Yeah, I read that the ctrl c and v (copy paste) doesn't work either. It all depends on the OS and/or apps. I actually don't know of the ctrl key will do anything. Remember honeycomb wasn't meant for a keyboard and mouse. If this combo becomes popular we may see more functionality included.

The control keys work in splashtop when controlling your computer.

I'm tempted to start a thread devoted to suggestions for updates for Asus to be aware of our ideas. Something like a key to enable a tab function seems like it would be easy to implement. Now that they have a majority of the major problems fixed (minus the whole screen lock issue), it seems like its time for the tweeks.

Screenshot Shortcut?

Anyone know if there is a shortcut to taking screenshots?
Without having to root and use drocap or shootme. (that's assuming they even work when rooted, which there's been one or two saying it doesn't.)
i'm rooted and neither dropcap or shootme work on my xoom.
Only one way to take screencaps...SDK, works both rooted and non but obviously takes a little knowledge/reading up on. But its not as hard as duplicating Grandma's gravy and biscuits so don't fear too much.

Kinda sad it requires root or being plugged into a PC to take screen caps. Might be the wrong place to bring it up but I don't think I'm the only one thats kinda irked about this.

I know I payed 800 dollars for my Xoom. **** should be better. Media player, well Gallery in general, and this, and more. But I think I'm going to give google till after their first Honeycomb update.
Lets just see what they think is worth fixing first.
This is me assuming screenshots would be built into the os.
I don't think it has to do with the Xoom hardware.
But I could be wrong.
So when has screen shots ever been built into the OS? Don't know what the big surprise is. Yes it would be nice, but eventually a root and simple software solution will present itself.
Now that we have a tablet OS which should be moving us closer to netbook replacement, it would be a nice feature to have without the need to root and have an external application. I take screenshots on my Windows machine every single day. We need to stop having a phone OS mentality and starting thinking tablet OS which is different. So yes, that would be a nice feature to have built in to Honeycomb.

Given the limited amount of hardware toggles on the Xoom, how would you suggest ScreenCapping be implemented? I'm not being condescending, I'm curious as to your thoughts.
ShootMe takes your cap by shaking your device. This seems logical because it wouldn't regurie anything as far as a UI.
If we ever receive extension support for the browser it seems adding a button to the toolbar would work, however that would limit caps to the browser only.
Anyone else have any ideas?

I am not a UI designer but there are probably many ways to do this. Long press screen, Print Screen in keyboard, add another system button to the taskbar on bottom, etc. In Windows, you just press the print screen button to copy to the clipboard. It can't be that difficult to implement something similar in Honeycomb. Once in the clipboard, you paste it to whatever application has focus. UI designers for Honeycomb can certainly figure out something this simple.

Samsung added it in the Galaxy Tab (which surprised me when I found out). On the Galaxy tab if you hold the back button and press the power button you get a screenshot, no root needed.

Correct, it was a Samsung add-on, not in the base OS.
Don't get me wrong, I think it would be a great thing for google to just throw in there and obviously it is very doable, and I do not know why it is not just part of the OS already.

The inability to take screenshots without root or the sdk is a known issue to Android users.
The ability was added in Gingerbread. (I'm not allowed to post links yet but go to phandroid.com and search for a post by Kevin Krause on March 1st, 2011 at 7:35 am for details.) Samsung is the only dev to make use of the option so far (afaik) and only on gingerbread devices.
If you want an app that takes screenshots without root or the SDK, the option is there for you to develop such an app if you don't want to wait for someone else to do it.
Oh, and be sure to post a link to your apk for us when you're done. Thanks.

The Galaxy Tab has screen capture right out the box. Hold the back button and press the power button and it takes a screen capture and even puts it in the folder named screen capture. Just sayin.
That is one thing Apple did get right on the iPhone and iPad: press and hold the "Home" button at center bottom, then press and release the "power" button on top.
This made it really easy to create documentation at work... Android could have used a combination of one of the volume buttons and the power button. which would come in handy when either creating documentation on how to do something or for instructing users to send a screen shot of an error they are seeing...

Dolphin browser shortcuts?

Well that was kind of a 'None Answer' given the question was about keyboard shortcuts.
I have the same question. I'm using a Microsoft Wedge Keyboard on a Xoom. Fantastic Keyboard by the way.
Since I got the keyboard, i will often place my tablet on the stand an arms lengths awy. Reaching over to the tablet to go to the next or back page is a pain.

[APP] OnLive Helper

OnLive is on the Android Market!
AND IT SUPPORTS XPERIA PLAY CONTROLS!
I WILL NO LONGER DEVELOP FOR THE APP
...
But it does not support Xperia Play game pad. So until support is added I've made an app...
OnLive Helper
LATEST
Added option to toggle between between an alternate profile.
Added option to donate and remove ads.
Added alternate key functionality.
Link:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.hatcyl.android.OnLiveHelper
Price:
Free with ads in the configuration menu.
Description:
This app will technically work with any phone! Visit the official thread to discuss!
This application will enable Xperia Play users to use the game pad to play games using the OnLive Service.
Currently only "LEGO Batman" and "Dirt 3" are included.
You can create your own custom profiles or use community created ones. Please visit the official thread on XDA for more information.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382899
Usage:
1. No Root Is Required.
2. To enable this app, you must change the Input Method Service to "OnLive Helper"
3. You can have the input method screen automatically come up when you open or close your keyboard by checking "Auto Prompt" in the options.
Custom Mode
You can now create custom profiles.
All phones should be supported (not just Xperia Play)
You create them by using Android KeyCodes: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/KeyEvent.html
To create a custom profile:
1. Create a txt file, name it anything (it does NOT need the .txt extension).
2. In line 1 type the keycodes you want to press.
3. In line 2 type the keycodes you want it to do. If you map a key to -1 then it will go to the third line to translate key presses until you release it. If you map a key to -2 then it will go to the fourth line to translate until you push it again.
4. In line 3 type alternate key codes.
5. In line 4 type the key codes that the app will toggle to.
5. Save that file to /sdcard/Android/data/com.hatcyl.android.OnLiveHelper/files
6. That "profile" will now appear in the settings.
Notes:
I've attached a sample file (Lego Batman) and a "Template" file for the noobs.
If you create a profile, share it here!
Some buttons like ESCAPE, MOUSE BUTTONS, etc. are not supported. They were not added into Android until a later version. I will see if there is anything we can do (at least for root users) if anyone knows please share!
Coming Later Maybe, No Promises
Mouse Support + More Keys Support (Maybe just for ROOT users)
Maybe a way to emulate the OnLive Controller instead of keyboard.
Support for touch pads.
An option for multiple profiles in one (i.e. press a button to change button mapping quickly) - DONE
An option for an "Alt" key, so if you press two buttons at once it does something else. - DONE
Something about international keyboards, if I can figure out what ps3taker is talking about.
A way to create custom profiles from within the app.
Some kind of In App purchase for some reason. - DONE
Waw this looks promising, I will try this in a few minutes!
One suggestion I have is could you make a list of all the xperia plays buttons and let users assign any keyboard button to that xperia button.
For example on the list of keys would be the X button, I then click on the xbutton and get a whole list of keyboard keys to choose from which I can assign to the X button.
I know thats a bit of a confusing explanation but I think you know what I mean.
EDIT: Your app works great, I dont know why something like this hasn't been made before. an app like this could also be used to make the xperia play work with flash games too.
Heck yes! This will do until it's official. Analog sticks would be amazing, but I noticed that your program syncs the buttons to keyboard strokes, like wsad on the dpad, nice idea!

I think custom mode should be top priority because then users can play any games without having to wait for you to add profiles, Also another good idea could be for users to make thier own custom profiles, but this app is still in its early stages so maybe im thinking too far ahead haha.

Don't know if will help but someone tried making an app that used the touch pads as trackball to control a mouse on internet browser its on a page in here somewhere. I also tried another game without touch pad support on onlive and the mouse was emulated on the touch screen. or paul that made mupen64 plus has touch pad control values and codes on his site and recons they can be added to most emus why not this, i understand they would only work as digital button presses as you are only mapping to the keyboard but would free up extra buttons for others. Hope this helps.

I dont think you can use the touch pads with this method, maybe with some sort of complex root app you could but this is essentially a virtual keyboard so I think getting mouse support is not possible.

i know it would not be analogue but he could use the touch pads as the d pad just like the sixaxis app uses sticks and sonys ps ports app type 4 setting to map the d-pad on a keyboard, then the other buttons would be free for others. Also why would you need root apps like mupen64plus use the touchpads it is not a virtual keyboard he is mapping to its a hardware keyboard if you notice square and trangle are really say x and y on a qwerty keyboard hes just changing them to say a and b. so why could he not fool the touchpad into thinking it was a trackball or mouse. I maybe wrong but was an idea.

remapping dock touch padbuttons

With the recent update, I noticed the ability to choose alternative click functions for the dock. The alternative for right click doesn't seem to be working as expected. I assumed context menu meant that it would work like right click (tap and hold), From what i can tell, it seems to work like left click. Everyone else experiencing the same? I was hoping to be able to get right click to work natively with splashtop (since splashtop hasn't gotten around to coding the right click to work like 2x and pocketcloud have).
I also noticed the preferences for the touchpad do nothing...maybe the way Asus implemented the touchpad or the driver, qui sais...
so, it's not just you.
Cheers!

Ditto here, plugged in my vx nano also to see if its just bad implementation for the dock on asus' side, but all i could get was the menu key functionality. I hope that now theres an option on the asus rom to remap those buttons we can get long press on the right click in a custom rom or something, thats the only thing that bugging me about having a right click that doesn't actually right click in a similar way to non tablets/phones.
Yep, confirmed.
+1 to the bug list.

Keyboard dock short cuts to launch apps

Hey, got some free time, just jog down some short cuts using our keyboard docks...If anyone knows any, please do post. Have fun...
Format: hold down "Search" key and tab a letter key will launch certain apps
example: hold down "Search" key and tab the "E" key will lauch email app.
Search key itself is to launch Google now.
e=email
p=google music
a=calculator
l=calendar
c=contacts
b=stock browser
m=maps
alt+tab=recent apps
To turn the screen on using the keyboard dock: Go to Settings->Asus customized setting-> look under Power management and unchecked :MobileDock Battery saving mode. To turn the screen on, hit any key on the keyboard.(I used "space bar")

Had you used the search function, you would have found several threads listing far more shortcuts than you do. They go back to early July, and January, respectively, for:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1761782
and the shortcut list reported in the Prime forum here the above one is partly based on:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1435242
Nothing new in here, I fear.
EDIT: they're not exactly the only threads on this subject, probably due the fact the list never made it to a sticky. My post probably comes about as being angry or irritated -- I'm not. I'm just preventing people from reinventing the wheel (and thinking they are pioneering in the process ).
It would be nice if there were some sort of users manual that at least lists all these search+key functions that can be used anywhere in the system. The menu+ combos are nice, but they're per-application.

yes, I agreed that search+key is more useful and practical for day to day usage (quick launch). Others, I don't think people want to bother with them.
If you download Any Cut for Android and install it, then run it, then create a short cut for the activity "Quick Launch" (there may be two entries, if it doesn't work with the first one, try the second one), then using this "Quick Launch" short cut, you can define any program to be run using the hotkeys Search+(a-z,0-9), ie. Search+Z could be used to run Marvin.
external keyboard info
For what it is worth, I just discovered something people probably already knew. On an external keyboard the Win key acts as a search key. I never freaking knew that. If you have a menu key, it also works as the dock menu key. Surprisingly some of the media buttons on my USB dell slim media keyboard also work. Volume, mute, track skip, pause, browser back/forward, calculator. The email and media player buttons might work as well for someone with stock apps, but I disabled my gmail/email and google media players so they do nothing for me. The VERY surprising key is the web/home button... the one with a house on it. It actually takes me to the home screen. Anyway, just some FYI.
Thank you , grear post, have

shortcuts and documentation
I am sure glad that I stumbled across this thead.
I was looking around for some documentation for the dock/keyboard for my TF700T.
Is there anything the documents how to get the most of the keyboard.
I wonder about altering the existing shortcuts as well as all the other questions that I have about using it effectively.
There are some quirks in it, but I assume that future driver/firmware enhancements will help those items.
Thank you to everyone contributing to this thread. I hope that it will become a sort of warehouse for getting the most out of the keyboard.
Thanks,
Jon

Is there a way to modify these? To add or change the keyboard shortcuts?

I thought I saw a post at one time that showed a dock keyboard shortcut for waking the screen, in lieu of pressing the power button. Anyone aware of one?

Go to Settings->Asus customized setting-> look under Power management and unchecked :MobileDock Battery saving mode. To turn the screen on, hit any key on the keyboard.(I used "space bar")

I've noticed that this setting does not survive a reboot. The option will still be selected, but not actually honored. You will need to de-select and re-select for it to start working again.
