[Q] How to Root the Samsung Galaxy Prevail? - General Questions and Answers

I am a c++ programmer by trade who is just now looking into android phones not only for communication but also for development. I picked up the Samsung Galaxy from Boost Mobile in order to first learn how to root, flash ROMs, and then get into dev.
My first goal is to root the phone so i can use it as a wifi hotspot. I first tried to download quick settings to see if i could get the wifi hopspot that way. I can see the hidden option for wifi hotspot but everytime I press it to turn it on, the phone disables the wifi totally. I then tried z4root, not root. I tried gingerbreak and it did not work. I would try to use superoneclick but cannot find usb drivers that will work with the galaxy prevail while its in usb debugging mode.
Any advice on how to get this phone rooted would great. Can you also list the prevail as one of the device supported on this site to spur development?

Not sure if you've come across the Prevail source code, the file name is SPH-M820_OpenSource_Froyo.zip
I can not post an actual link because I'm new to this site, but you can find the file here:
opensource dot samsung dot com/reception/reception_main.do?method=reception_search&searchValue=m820
replace "dots" with a period

I have not been able to get mine rooted either, but I did find these drivers seem to work for the phone with win7 and xp.

Try Z4root app I think this might work considering there arent any nam locks on this phone go to 4 shared and look for the apk files as this app is no longer available in the market! I have used this app on the following devices, htc hero, sprint zio, samsung moment, droid 1, droid 2, &droid global!

I tried Z4Root it did not work.

recovery mode
recovery mode is vol up + power
says
Android system recovery (3e)
EATH /data/update_sucess
E:Update logfile dose not exsist
#MANUAL MODE#
navigate with vol keys and camera button to select

z4 root and super one click
i tried z4 and the app closed at acquiring root shell
super one click also failed with psneuter and ginger break
fails at running psneuter and at running gingerbreak
also fail with shell root in same way

unrevoked
ps the unrevoked roots just do not detect the phone

odd recover style screen
if you hold down vol + and vol - and camera then tap power a screen comes up that starts with little kernel
vol - and camera makes the phne show "downloading..."
this is shown in windows as "samsung usb compsite device"
and "samsung mobile modem"

on linux
dmesg output of the "downloading..." screen
[ 77.031415] usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 2
[ 84.590135] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
[ 84.748548] cdc_acm 1-1:2.0: This device cannot do calls on its own. It is not a modem.
[ 84.748762] cdc_acm 1-1:2.0: ttyACM0: USB ACM device
********-laptop:~$

i have tried all known roots to my knowledge: z4 (rageagainstthecage), psneuter, and gingerbreak. none work. so im with you, out of luck.

same here i tired a bunch and no luck

I've been trying too, no luck at all, been at it since last Friday, but my knowledge is not nearly as good as most of you, so I assumed I just didn't know what I was doing.

I tell ya, I'd love to see root on this thing. Sweet little device. Greatly appreciate all who are working on this task

I have not found a way to root this phone but i did accomplish USB tethering. Install Samsung Kies (for usb driver for prevail), install PDAnet on computer and phone, and away you go. I am looking for a windows 7 bluetooth driver for the prevail that way i could tether via bluetooth DUN. Does anyone have any success finding a prevail bluetooth windows driver?

how to root
Is there someone who can direct me to a good place on how to develop the root, I would be willing to spend some time working on this. In particular is there any work that I can do to help a developer to create the root.

I wish google could help for that lol. I want to move my apps from the internal memory onto a sd. 164mb internal memory come the **** on

Any1 root this thing yet??????????

Same experience here, z4root required phone reboot as it kept setting off the vibrate function (permanent root) and eventually locked up the phone. z4root temporary root didn't work either. SuperOneClick failed as well with both exploits and locked up on Windows 7 x64 while running exploits. Can't find any information on Google. However, I am a 4th year Software Engineering student and would be willing to work with others to find a fix.
The Samsung Galaxy Prevail is a pretty cool little phone for the money and worth the exploitation effort. For those interested in working on this issue with me know that I am both a Windows (7 x64) and Linux (Slackware x64) user with a Java programming background. Look me up (email) on my profile.

From what I understand... We'd have to set up a rom manipulation environment (cooker?). Unfortunately the only tutorial I can find is the one for manipulating HTC roms. I'm not experienced enough to know if it could be used for all Android roms and too much of a chicken to try it out and risk bricking my phone.
Once the rom manipulation environment is set up you can go and add root support, take out unwanted apps, etc.
I'd also be willing to put in some effort into learning this if someone is willing to put in some time to show me the ropes... or point me in the right direction.

[Q] Rooting~ (issue) Waiting For Device

Samsung infuse.
Windows 7 OS
microsoft .net framework (latest version)
The Issue:
Once all steps followed, phone plugged in correctly in debugging mode with sd card unmounted, and SuperOneClick is activated via the "root" button I receive a not
responding notification at the top of the window. The root process seizes up at the Waiting For Device entry, and it will not move forward/Detect my device for anything!
What I've tried:
I have followed correct steps for rooting using SuperOneClick, tried running program as admin, tried ending the process via process manager before re-attempting the root multiple different ways, toggled debug during root process, turned phone on after running root, and downloading pdanet to find all the necessary drivers that may or may not have been missing.
Possible Reason For Issue:
After all this, what I beleive the problem to be is I am missing cdc abstract control model. Anytime I try to aquire this, I receive a "driver not found" message.
I have sought it out manually and turned up with nothing.
The Main Question:
How can i fix, or proceed past this point succesfully/get SuperOneClick to detect my Samsung Infuse 4G device?
Ideas/suggestions/info/programs that help/step by step assistance would all be greatly appreciated.
I used a search on the infuse forums and came across this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088122&highlight=superoneclick
Therefore, this thread will be closed to keep the forum clean. Ask your question there.

Need help with samsung skyrocket root!!

So, here's my story. I am trying to gain root access to my Galaxy S II Skyrocket. I see a lot of posts/replies of other people having success with SuperOneClick 2.2 using the zerg exploit but for some reason mine just hangs and doesn't go any further. To kind of backtrack, I was able to root my first Galaxy S II Skyrocket, but then I had charging issues so I exchanged it for a replacement. Now, the replacement will not root. And even with the first one I had a hard time gaining root. It took me several, several attempts to get it working. I don't understand what I'm missing. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Few things...
- Samsung Galaxy S II is currently on stock 2.3.5 with firmware UCKJ2
- USB debugging has been turned on
- Samsung USB drivers have been successfully installed on PC
- Using Windows XP
- Using SuperOneClick 2.2 with zerg exploit
- Tried uninstalling USB drivers and reinstalling
The status one the SuperOneClick is as follows...
Killing ADB server
Starting ADB server
Waiting for device...
That's it. Nothing else beyond that. And on the right hand side it indicates this...
It's keep stating that 'daemon not running... starting in now on port 5037' and it keeps looping and eventually does not move.
I've tried using different methods of rooting this such as Skyrocket-Easy-Root and Doom's EasyRoot 1.0 and the 'daemon not running... starting it now on port 5037' message occurs on those as well.
PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON because the regular Samsung Galaxy S II and other devices go through just fine. I know it can be done because obviously other users are successful with root and I was too with my first Skyrocket.
is the sdk installed under admin and your running the tools as a user or vice versa? they have to be equal. you could try killing adb and running it again if it is not a permissions thing.

I have not changed anything since the first success of my Skyrocket root. It's weird that it would root the first Skyrocket but not the second one.
I used this one.

Solution for "Files not found" and "permission" when trying to run ZergRush
Usually, I do not have a habit of writing on discussion board. But out of sense of gratitude for makers of ZergRush, I felt obliged to share way to get your phone rooted..
My phone is Samsung Galaxy SkyRocket (Android 2.3.5)
Steps:
1. Get instructions and Samsung driver from following site
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...s-ii-skyrocket-on-gingerbread-with-one-click/
2. I used ZergRush root from following location
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...sb2HAg&usg=AFQjCNFU6uftUB2XRt8Q0rZC8faCn1PfBA
Now the most important thing of running the Root
1. For windows 7, do NOT double click on the root.bat or any exe file.
2. Open Windows Command prompt in ADMINISTRATIVE MODE, navigate to the batch file.. for example:
D:\Android\DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su>runme.bat
and your root process will start.
Most of the people when try to double click do not have required or correct Environment path settings hence they see the error for files not found!!
Hope this resolves the issue.. Goood luck !!

I still get errors "system cannot find the path specified" and it doesn't work.
ashque01 you put "D:\Android\DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su>runme.bat"
I didn't get that to work until I switch the > to a \ the arrow instead of a backslash makes a difference, beg pardon but I don't know dos very well and I did use the arrow with no success, lol...
Once in the command prompt (you get there by typing exactly that "command prompt" in search bar, after clicking the start button in windows 7) Right click on command prompt to run as administrator.
I put D:\DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su\runme.bat because that's where I used 7zip to extract it to, in the root of hard drive partition. It ran but with errors and announced done! press any key to continue.
I tried it again by creating a subfolder on the D: partition named android like you did, tried it again, same thing,
Still hoping to get a superuser icon so I can download my root explorer app from the market.
YAY!
I got root.
I told all of about it in that thread I started titled s#%rocket. I did admire what Entrophy remarked about it's hardware being disagreeable, but that was in the i777 thread. I had no business there (mod moved my thread, thank you) as my handset is i727.
I coulda swore that's what about phone said before I started but sure enough when you pull the battery it says i727 right there, can't argue with that, I was just being "elevator up, but door not open"
Beg pardon

If it comes to that option I need to be able to use a rooting program on my computer that does not require internet the only internet I am able to use is the libraries. I have a laptop but no charger so my laptop is dead. I'm not a noon when it comes to rooting as I've mentioned I've done it before. Just need help finding a root for this tablet. I appreciate any help I get and thank you. If you need more info feel free to ask. I've also looked at the topic about the 4GB but its not that helpful is why I created my own topic.

I have the rct6378w2 RCA 7' 8GB tablet (4.2.2 JB). (Black Friday 2013 Walmart for $49)
I was able to root it by first installing the pdanet drivers (for adb access). And then using the kingo app, which you can get from http://www.kingoapp.com/.
Its free but closed source. I found it via this youtube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MiZtZCqu4k
Worked even with the 1.0.2 update installed (which I have no clue what it did (17MB).

UPDATE: I found out the problem! The support files weren't in the root file I had the .exe in. I just moved the .exe to the same folder with the support files, and now I'm rooted and ready! Thanks!

how are you turning on usb debugging? I also have this tablet(purchased on black Friday from Walmart like everyone else) and mine doesn't seem to have that option anywhere. in fact, compared to the previous two android products I have, this device seems to lack ALOT of available functions. though I am capable of navigating a recovery menu at boot. but that doesn't do me any good for using pdanet. that seems to be my biggest road block. pdanet wont install because the onl;y way I can allow my device to connect to my pc with adp is using the adp updater in the recovery boot menu.

It is a hidden option that needs to be enabled. Follow this guide: www ninjaromeo com / enable-usb-debugging-developer-options-jelly-bean/
I just enabled this option on my Walmart BF 7" RCA RCT6378W2 tablet.
Sorry I had to mangle the link because XDA wont let me link external sources yet.
Glad I could help a few. Now, someone get on a functional recovery ;p
I have poked around a little at the stock recovery, backing it up, etc.. But am not brave enough to try and get CWM working on it.
I was able to use th Xposed framework for a few mod's no problem. Battery mod, reboot menu, hide navbar, etc.. But Xposed can only do so much.
Edit: I heard on reddit this tool also works for rooting. I have not tested it (already rooted with the other method).

I was not drunk when I made this post...I have the RCT6378W2 if you go to about tablet in your settings and repeatedly tap the build number...the deveolper options will appear...I fell out of my seat when i discovered this.
On a side note...if you repeatedly tap the android version...a cute picture of the android jellybean will appear. Try it.

1: Install drivers. Seeing as RCA does not provide drivers, we had to find some that work. That's where PDANET comes in. Their drivers support a very wide range of Android devices. We are not installing it to tether. We just want the drivers it provides. So download PDANET, install, let it detect your device, install the drivers, and then afterwords you can uninstall it.
2: Enable Developer Options. Settings>About tablet> Tap Build Number a bunch of times till it's enabled.
3: Enable USB Debugging. Options>Developer Options>Click On (up top)>Then checkmark USB Debugging
That should clear up some of the confusion in this thread. How you root after step 3 is up to you. Personally, I did it with Kango. Which was straight forward. Connect device, hit a button, Say yes to a couple questions, reboot, presto done.

Thanks, that sorted things out.
To make clear, and aid in any other inquiries, I managed to find an ADP connection mode, among other android update features. with the device off, hold volume up while turning the device on. it should boot to an image of an android with an open chest panel and the words, "no command". if you push volume up again it will provide you with options and instructions on how to execute. you can manual update the device with an SDK through USB ADP mode this way. I'm not sure if that makes anything simpler or generates a work around but I hope it helps with future development for this device.
Well got root now we need a recovery...
For some reason when trying to make sure I can send adb commands to my tablet, I am showing no devices connected. I check in device manager and it shows up as Android ADB interface for the tablet. These drivers were installed with the latest version of PDANet. Thoughts or how were you all able to get the drivers fully loaded and working? I have developer options already enabled and USB debugging mode is checked.

You need to create "adb_usb.ini" in "Users>Username>.android".
Inside "adb_usb.ini" insert "0x2207" and save.

Installed the latest pdanet. It wont install the driver. I checked the device manager and it still shows the device without the driver. not sure what else to try..

[Guide][Root] - Nextbook NX007HD

I recently got one of these, I imagine quite a few people did (sale this year on em), and could find no documentation on how to root it. Hopefully this hits google and will help all the other users out there! I did not make the software but gave it a go and it worked fine.
How to Root your Nextbook NX007HD
Google and download Cydia Impactor (First result on Google) Extract it (desktop, wherever you prefer)
Enable USB Debugging on your Tablet (Settings > Developer Options > USB debugging)
Plug up your Tablet via USB, do not turn usb storage on, let windows try (and most likely fail) at installing drivers.
Launch Impactor and select USB Driver Scan from the top menu (under USB). Let it do it's thing, reboot your PC after.
Verify your tablet/android device is showing up on the start-bar as being plugged up/in (bottom right area)(this may not be needed depending on your setup)
Relaunch Impactor (if rebooted ) and hit the Start Button
Let it do it's thing.
You should be rooted :victory: now go install SuperUser!
I should additionally note in my experience the SuperUser by ChaindsDD does not properly catch/work, but the one by CWM does.
Hope this helped everyone out who was slightly concerned when they couldn't find a root method someone else had tried/verified!
Thank You
I got the NX007HD cause it was on sale, before needing this one I head bought a tablet Craigslist and it WS already rooted.
I have never rooted before and tryed the one click root which didn't would and came across this and after spending all day trying to root it with or help it was done in under 10 mins I can't thank you enough.
P.S by any chance cukdu tell me how I could change the start up screen?

Be sure to hit > Usb > Driver Scan at the top of Impactor as noted in the instructions!
Glad this helped you, I've rooted a few other friends tables (same model) with no problems!
Upgrade
Do you know where I can find help to upgrade the firmware from 4.1.1 to any later version, or if this is even possible for this model?
I am trying to download Angry Birds for my daughter, but it says that its not compatible with this version firmware.
No upgrade needed!

Hello dannybz,
Last weekend I was able to install many apps on my niece's tablets, (Angry Birds, Hay Day, Google earth, Ninja Fruit cut) :good:
After rooting the tablet with the great instructions you found here, you have to install an app called: "Market Helper" and follow the instructions...
codekiem.com/2013/02/13/market-helper/
Then you can install many apps you want...
Hope it can help you... It helped me a lot.
(I did this on 2 tablets with Android 4.1... the original version that comes with the tablet)
Can you provide a dump of original rom for this tablet?
Been trying to get a hold of it since forever.

Goclever Quantum 700s - Rooted Finally

I have searched for months on end to try and find a way to root my Goclever quantum 700s but hadnt had any luck up until now i download some software called "mobilego" made by "wondershare"
(id post the link but im new here so this isnt allowed as yet) google the above
Install mobilego to your pc/laptop
Start mobilego and connect your device (enable usb debugging)
At the top of mobilego you will see the "root" button click that and away you go it will find all drivers it needs automatically and also its app on your device (not sure why my guess would be for communication during root) your tablet will restart once or twice but just leave it to run DONT use the device once its complete congratulations you now have root access.
I tried all other methods every single .apk i could find all failed the above method worked for me so thought i would share as i see nobody claiming to have root yet so this maybe helpful
PS i would like someone to point me in the right direction as to identify what it has installed so i can maybe find a suitable custom rom that will work with the help from you guys :good:
