I was modding my defy pretty frequently a few months back, but got really busy and put it off. Im running jboogies final froyo 4 and I've got the dreaded weak flash. I've searched all over, but the only thing I can find involves reflashing a different ROM. I'm pretty happy with my setup now and would like to keep it but I really miss my flash. Any suggestions?

lol? dreaded flash¿? therefore I also have a low flash how can I fix this? I've flashes lots of roms and I've always had the same flash (with the last cyanogenmod the torch stuff it doesn't do the bright flash like it did in the nexus one) is this normal? does the defy has a weaker flash than the nexus one? 'cause if not, I also have the flashlight problem beeing too weak
No, my flash was fine when I was stock. It's not green or blue like some other people's. It's just not bright enough to make a difference in photos.
No solution here either, and I have the same "very weak" flash thing going.
I've tried going back to stock flashes/different roms, to no effect. It stays weak.
Any other ideas / fixes?
Mine used to be green ( on both ym defys) then after changing to liquid arc rom they where slightly weaker but normal and now after one going to CM7 and the other to barbones there both fine no idea what changed.
my flashlight is gone since i tried DefyFroyoSense several times, because its based on the Chinese Froyo leak, the first one. It damages the flashlight. I cant turn it on using apps, it flashes a very weak and out of sync light when i take pictures. Thats the only way to know that the light isnt 100% damaged.

Same as me, very weak light with a green finish, waiting for official 2.2 to send it to repair.

Ok,
So my home row buttons (Menu, Home, Back, Search) do not light up as they should! if the room is dark they will not work at all! and ive never seen them work in a dark room! However every day in the late afternoon when im in my living room and the phone is charging they will just light up! (at first i though it was a refection or just ambient light in the room so i grabbed the phone and ran into my closet and WOW they light up!) so i figured it was something with my settings so i reset my phone to new and still same problem, then said WTH and rooted and updated to 2.3.4 (best thing ive done with it so far!) and have the exact same problem... So then i decided to try another charge (brand new out of the box 1 day old!) and the lights will do the same and light up when its moderately light in the room but then they wont turn off...
So a chat with samsung and they tell me that these phones dont have that feature! so off to verizon and lets test a few more devices!!! and what? at some point they lit up also in inappropriate lighting conditions, so after puzzled VZW people i consult samsung again and they tell me yet again that the featured isnt offered on this phone, so my guess is that its a software flaw?
any ideas?
anyone having lighting issues?
thanks
Wow, that's a lot of exclamation points. I don't know what you're talking about, mine work fine

Odd, works fine for me. Is it possible that you have a screen protector covering your light sensor? In the day time the back lights are off, then if I cover the light sensor they come right on.

The light sensors (which controls auto brightness and the backlights on the hardkey) is broken in the kernel for Gingerbread..
If this is a huge issue for you you might want to consider going back to Froyo

But he said it happened with the new phone and the verizon display one...?
Sent from my Droid Charge running Humble 1.42
It might even be broken on the stock Froyo. All the people who said it's working fine for them right now are running custom ROMs, kernels, firmwares and all that jazz. Maybe it was fixed through one of these custom updates. I dunno.
I just got a brand new Charge (thanks to the Fascinate swap program).
The bottom buttons do not light up. This is fresh out of the box.
I also do not see any way in which they would light up - the icons appear to be painted on to the physical buttons. No underlay for LED backlight.. but I suppose there is one if custom ROMs allow for it.
Which I will know shortly

there is no screen protector or case on either of the phones, and both phones were cleaned well to make sure nothing was hindering the sensors.

The problem is not only to the one that is rooted and flashed but also happens to the 2 at verizon that i inspected (brand new out of the box) and the 2nd one that i have that is also brand new with no mods

I think that the kernel for this phone was just snatched and quickly edited (by samsung) from another product and this is one thing that they havent been able to fix and figure out, because the woman at samsung told me
(Ruby: As your phone has physical keypads, there is no light feature available for keys.
Visitor: the small row of buttons (4 to be exact) at the bottom of the phone should be back lit in low light situations, however they occasionally light up but only in moderately to brightly light rooms
Ruby: I am sorry, there is no feature available on your phone.
Visitor: im sorry but i can prove that this phone does have back lit keys
Ruby: I am sorry, your phone home key rows do not have light option)
but we all know that the button do actually have a lighting option and samsung is just trying to delete the function but isnt 100% successful..
I don't know what to say, they work properly for me. This includes when I was fully stock EE4, as well as now (deodexed, rooted ROM, PBJ kernel, voodoo enabled).
droid charge doesnt have backilights in the keys.. wth are you all talking about... no wait there they are! barely. what th! where did they go again?
Stock froyo from the factory... Daylight = button lights off; sensor covered (night) = button lights on.

I got my charge as a replacement for my fascinate like many others. befor i do anything i wanted to give the phone a few days on stock to make sure everything works fine. So far the only thing i noticed was sometimes it lags when i hit the power button to turn the screen on. Sometimes it flashes a static filled screen for a split sec before home screen loads. also some times it takes a sec for my screen to come back on after i lower the phone from my face so i can hang up. Is this just a little minor known issue others are having or is there something wrong with my phone possibly? Phone is all stock, fully bloated and the only apps ive installed are xbox live stats and google googles (coolest app ever). I doesnt do it all the time but it happens frequently enough to notice it. I can normally recreate it if i hit power button to turn screen off and let it sit a few mins then hit the button again to turn it back on.
When running completely stock, I experienced the same 2-3 second delay. Now that I am on EE4 with a custom kernel, the delay is closer to 1 second.

did you ever see black/white lines or static? I only ask because if its a common thing that most have exp then its really no big deal. ill root and flash to help fix the lag. But if its not then i would like to get it fix asap. Other then that i havent seen any other issues yet.

I have seen it on occasion. It's much less noticable on a custom kernel and ROM.

Thanks for posting everybody. It seams like its a common issue then. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't just mine or that i needed to return it due to some kinda of defect. Nice to know a custom kernel will fix it for the most part. Thanks again guys. This phone is so much nicer then the fascinate
I set a lock pattern on my phone, and I haven't seen the screen flicker once since. I'll switch back to the puzzle lock and see if it comes back....standby.
*update* switched back and still no flicker. Maybe that's the ticket.

I find with my phone that the capacitive buttons do not light up all the time, it seems from boot to boot that it will sometimes work and sometimes not but with bricked kernal it works all the time and in the recovery it works all the time as well.
Anyone else getting this problem ??.
By design, they turn on and off depending on the amount of the light in the area. If you were to be in a dark place, then they will light up. If you were outside during daytime, then they would turn off as you can see the buttons just fine without them lighting up.
that doesnt seem to be the case for mine, its either on or off, i have not noticed it dynamically change depending on the condition of lighting.
Have you flashed a custom rom? If so, consider reinstalling the rom or swapping it altogether. If you've modified any system files or flashed any customization zips, that could be the culprit too. I know some roms out there offer "tweaked brightness thresholds", I believe this could contribute as well.
yea its ARHD i update every couple weeks or so.
Are you on ICS? If so playing around with the brightness settings should fix it, put in on auto brightness as well.

I think i have figured it out, it seems that if i boot or reboot my phone in the light it will be off but if it put it under a blanket or somewhere dark it will switch the capacitive lights on. It only seems to switch between on and off when booting/rebooting so do other peoples switch on and off dynamically while the phone is still switched on ??.
I have tried all roms including ICS and the same scenario happens with all.
I rarely start a thread and i typically search first and i did that already but couldn't find an answer or someone else with the issue...
So my problem is simple but annoying... When i snap a picture with the stock camera app and flash turned on, randomly my phone shuts off and will NOT turn on again until i do a battery pull... I say randomly because it doesn't always happen... But it happens quite often...
I haven't tried with a 3rd party camera app because I prefer to use stock apps mostly... So I'm not sure if its app related or hardware related... I'm leaning towards hardware because I've had this issue since running 4.1.2 ROMs and I've tried multiple stock/modified camera apps to no avail... Currently on 4.2.1 ROM with of course the 4.2 camera...
Torch toggle works fine, as well as turning on the flash while recording video... This ONLY happens when the flash comes on for taking a photo... And again it only happens randomly...
Anyone else experience this or know how to fix it?

The first thing I would do is flash factory Google. This will rule out it being a ROM issue. If the problem is so there then yes it is a hardware issue.

I've seen that happen with a bad battery once. Would occur more often at low charge percentage too, but was relatively fine at 100%. Took a while to figure out what the heck was going on

Strangely, it was doing it before i got a new battery a couple months ago... I sorta felt my battery was bad so i went to get a new one from the sprint store... The guy said because "It was rooted and the phone had so much awesomeness.." it was draining the battery faster... I told him a quick reason why i thought it had to be the battery and he just gave me a battery from the drawer without doing any paperwork or anything... My battery wasn't feeling any better after the change and i still had issues with flash...
I think I'll just take some photosphere pics and well lit shots... Who needs flash anyways? Lol

I have the EXACT same issue however long pressing the power button turns on the phone instead of pulling the battery. It also started happening to me only on jelly bean. My GF has the same problem.
I can also tell you it happens with camera zoom FX as well but this cannot be a hardware issue since it only happened in jelly bean. It cant be that "suddenly" our phones developed a problem.
Is nobody using a nexus S to take photos or what? Or is it just a few unfortunate users affected by this?
Thanks for that post... Now I know I'm not alone here lol... I too noticed it with JB... Its %~°^¶©£ annoying... I wish a dev would look into it... I think it may have something to do with the flash having that instant jolt of high voltage... Idk because I'm no expert... I found a 50/50 chance of making it work correctly... If you hold the shutter button to let it focus, then let it snap, there's a chance it won't shut off... Just something to try and see if it helps!!

just did a complete factory restore back to 4.1.1 unrooted and everything... forgot to test the camera... i rooted again and installed custom recovery... tested camera out several times... no issue at all... tested some more... no issues... decided it WORKS!! so i flashed cm10.1 and updated everything again... tested camera and OFF!!! FU%$&*&@&#&^$%$^@&$^&$^^%$#^%@*@*@&&#^*&@^#*&^@#*^ i'm at a loss for what to do here... i'm glad one other person reported this... but there HAS to be more people out there with this issue...
test it... make sure flash is ON and snap a few pics... maybe a close pic out of focus, etc... idk what else to do... it worked fine unrooted...

doesn't matter my battery level... it happens on my charger too lol...
I didnt have this problem last night on a wedding thankfully as that would have been embarrassing, lots of pics were taken with flash. Its the sheer randomness of this that it makes it so hard to diagnose. :S
I've been having exactly the same problem. I cannot relate it to Battery Levels, as the battery drains sooo fast since I got the ICS upgrade.
I am now on the Factory ROM 4.1.2 and it is all problems. I am thinking of going back to Ginger Bread... them were the days!!!

if you read above, it worked fine for me when i flashed 4.1.1 factory image... something to do with 4.2 i guess... idk... i'm not stressing it so much... i've learned not to use my camera when its dark or low light lol...

it wasn't a ROM, it was the factory image from returning the phone to stock with the program i used to root it... i've given up on pictures with this phone haha
Its a Battery Problem
I'm suffering from this same issue and after downloading several camera app to no avail, the issue is finally resolved. From my experience, I can safely conclude that my was a hardware battery issue. At first I didn't believe it was a battery problem. I decided to go to different stores and tried several batteries but all shut down the phone when the flash on/flash auto + taking a snap is executed. Then, I pulled out the battery from my friend's brand new S3 and inserted it in my phone's battery compartment, fire on the phone and voila the camera flash worked like a charm without shutting down the phone. I used the same old battery on the new S3 low and behold, the new S3 inherited the flash+camera=shutdown issue instantly.
Same Issue on SGS2 Hercules
Having this issue after flashing a ROM on my GS2 Hercules, good thing I only experience it when my battery level is below 25%. But it would really be a pain if I would want to take a picture with a flash while my battery is low.
Have anybody tried other solution or troubleshooting aside from trying a different/new battery.
similar problem here...
the same thing happens to me, but with the difference that i run stock 4.1.2 rooted, and when the phone die after the led flashes, i just press pwr button and the phone turn on like never was happened.
i think it's a problem of corruption of something in the system, if i do a factory reset, for some limited shot the camera+led works, after that the phone die instantly.
similar problem with front camera, if i switch from back to front the camera service crashes and i can't do anything for make it working (manually stop the gallery process, reboot, cleaning data of gallery process), just wait some days and the process came back working (just for the rear camera).
sometimes i notice that while the stock camera app doesn't work, the Whats app camera keep working also with flash!

same issue with the nexus 5.. taking pictures works and then suddenly shuts down the phone, the power button can't wake the phone and the only way to get it to turn on is to plug it into an outlet.. very annoying.
that said I looked around the forums and it seems like a hardware battery issue, when the voltage supplied is too low or high or something
flash has caused my phone to shut off.
got GS3 SCH-i535 I've noticed the flash causing the screen to black out completely and shut off phone. I usually have to pull battery. its done it on 4.2 and 4.3 probably even 4.1 i dont remember I'm currently running 4.4.2. it just did it again which has prompted me to look online. as glad as i am to know im not the only one. is there any ****ing solution???
So my phone has been fine until yesterday. Everything seems to be working except the screen won't show anything. I can feel the vibration from unlocking as if it was showing and I can still hear sounds and the buttons at the bottom and the keyboard all light up but nothing shows on the screen. If I take the battery out and put it back in most of the time it fixes the issue. Sometimes it doesn't even show the splash screen though. Its kind of hit or miss.
I replaced the ROM I had on and put the original battery back in (I have an extended battery) to make sure it was neither of those issues. My guess is something is going out on it. Anyone else have this happen/have a fix?

Also forgot to mention this doesn't happen if I boot into recovery.
Are you using a custom ROM? If it doesn't happen on recovery then sounds like a kernel issue to me... Since the only difference between recovery and normal mode is the kernel they're using is different.

I am, yeah. I ended up going into recovery and formatting everything, it was still acting up for a bit after that but then started working fine. My guess is I had some sort of corruption. Thanks

Well I mostly fixed it. Still happens randomly when sliding out. If I slowly slide in or out again that fixes it though. Still, kinda of a weird problem.
