Built in car mount - Thunderbolt General

So it turns out the TB has a built in car mount. I flipped open the kick stand, tilted up the center vents, slid the kick stand in, and it's like it was made to be. A nice secure car mount in the center of my dash, that magically disappears when I remove it.
Sounds ghetto, but it works. I never liked the car dock apps, and I liked having a big car mount cluttering the joint up even less. Goes great with my self retracting car charger.
Obviously all vent's might not be suited to this.

Hmmm... I'll have to try it but I can't see it being very stable, especially with the weight of the extended battery.

I would think with the weight of the phone and how far the kickstand is to one side, it would tilt over. Non-issue for me as my vents are vertical on my Infiniti.

I have mounted the verizon car dock to the inside of my cubby door on my 2005 g35 coupe. An idea if you have a g35 model w/o nav... its the perfect spot and perfect size

sounds interesting, ill give this a shot when im out of the office

I did the same in a 07 cts-v on a road trip recently. Only worry is extra wear and tear on the kickstand

Well it is my camera, and I don't think it can take a picture of its self. I might be able to dust off an old phone and snap a shot later. My car is an accord coupe ex-l. The vents lean back just a touch and are about the same size as the phone.
I wouldn't use during a rally car race, but it stays in place nicely on the commute.
Just thought I'd throw it out there for people that don't want to have a dock lying around for the occasional car use.

Kickstand / USB port placement?

I just got a TB... Why would the put the USB port on the side so you can’t use the kickstand?? This makes no sense to me. If you are using your kickstand you are -
a. probably using it on a desktop, counter, etc. where you are going to be able to plug it in....
and
b. watching videos like movies that are going to drain the battery quickly!!
Why the H would they not put it on the other side so you could have the USB plugged in and the kick stand out at the same time? It makes the kickstand practically useless. Plus if you are watching movies with the kick stand closed it covers the speaker and muffles the sound.... wow not a good design.
My kickstand locks in place pretty good which allows me to use it with the USB facing up.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
That works if you don’t have a case. But I have a rubber type black case and that adds enough weight that the kickstand won’t stay open.
The question remains? How could they have missed that in the design?
It was no design flaw my friend...HTC clearly wants you to buy their docking station

QFT.
Why the hell else would they do it? Kind of silly to even put the kickstand there at all though. I'd rather not have it (and it be in the way of my speakerphone muffling the damn thing) then have it and not be able to use it while not charging.

The kickstand works that way, flush against a table in upside-down mode, as long as you have a charging cable plugged in. It adds just enough extra support to help out the kickstand.

Have you tried it with the charging cable plugged in? Works for me. I don't have a case, but I do have a heavy 2750 mAh battery and it still works this way. Would be better still if HTC had used a stiffer spring. I'm also going to get a down-angle microUSB cable so it looks a little nicer without the cable sticking straight up.
You can do what we did with the Dinc: get a business card holder and dremmel a spot for the USB cable to come through. Only costs like $3-5.

Yea, I thought the same thing but with it on the side you can stand it up and use it for an alarm clock plugged in.
Simple. They thought charging in the portrait orientation was more important than the landscape orientation.
This is just silly. There is nothing wrong with the design. The kickstand is there for portable use with battery. When charging, it's expected that the user will use a charging/multimedia/car base, where the holder provides the charging connection.

And like I need one more thing to carry back and forth to work every day... Oh wait... let me guess... I should buy 2 charging stand so I can leave one at work??!??! That does sound better than just putting the kick stand on the proper f’ing side!!!
That's your choice. Maybe if your eyes weren't rolling up in their sockets, you could find one. Maybe if you were doing work at work, instead of watching videos on your phone, you could afford one.
One of my favorite things I do in meetings is pop that kickstand out and stand it upright. All the Evo jokers bust out their Evo, try it....and it falls over.
I also like that I can stand it upright and charge it at the same time.
Just admit it folks. Even HTC makes design flaws and errors of judgement. 1400 mA battery...?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I agree, I thought (and still think) the USB port placement and orientation of the kickstand is a major apparent oversight... it was one of the first things I noticed when I got the phone. I thought, "Whoa, that can't be right!" I thought I had opened the kickstand wrong or something, hahahaha.
However, not saying it's not a flaw, I think it's definitely a flaw, it does work when plugged in upside-down. Even with the extended battery on, mine still holds up upside-down.
Still though, REALLY? I can't believe they didn't think of that...
And nobody has a desk dock! (Except for the person who will surely post right after me who does have one and feels it necessary to chime in. )
Definately a poor choice for usb port placement... upside down is not the solution, and upright messes up the widangle for porn!
And correct me if I am wrong, but the HTC dock doesn't accommodate the extended batter, either. Right? Or should I buy a dremel tool the same day?

Be happy it has a kickstand at all... Never had them on any other phone.
I only use mine for charging in nightstand mode setting vertical.
Don't need to watch movies on my phone that is what a laptop or TV is for.
Makes sense to me. No pun intended. I don't need video capabilities nor do I use it that way. I also do not normally combine charging and using the kickstand.

Ditto, ordered two (the lady and I) and then the Otterbox Defender. I got an e-mail saying ships in 3-5 days.
I posted this on the other thread but I guess no one has posted a review for the cardock.
I have the stock HTC One X car mount and it is not a joy to use.
The stock relies on these grooved sides to hold the phone in, and when you slide in the phone sometimes you have to wiggle to get the USB to plug in. Further, because it holds the phone pretty tightly, it's not easy to remove the phone. I have to use both hands to get my phone out of the car mount.
I guess it just comes down to the fact that it grips the phone really tight and there is not a "catch" to release. You kind of squeeze the phone into the tracks to place, and pulllll it out when you're done.
The good news is that the suction cup works really well. It's very stable and it had not fallen off at all in the last 48 hours, even when I am tugging on it to get my phone out.
The metallic joint between the suction and the arm doesn't really rotate except in a circle, you cannot change the angle it comes out at. The joint between the phone holder and the metallic arm is more mobile.
The phone uses USB to charge. The USB clicks into the bottom and works well. It comes with a long cord, I'm not sure how long but plenty to reach from my cigarette lighter to the windshield w/ comfortable excess cord.
I had been having some issues with the USB not perfectly fitting into the phone when I squeeze the phone through the tracks, but the track is so tight that I cannot maneuver the phone to get the USB to go in. Each time it's maybe 1mm off, but it's frustrating. Twice I had to remove the stand from my windshield to get it in.
Once it's setup, however, this is a very stable stand that will keep your phone very secure while driving.

Why they don't use the pogo pins (5 little holes on the back of the phone) confuses me. They put them there, but their own dock doesn't use them.
The Nexus One car dock I use is awesome because it connects using the pogo pins on the bottom of the phone.
Yeah I agree. POGO pins would get rid of the USB-aiming issues I am having w/ my dock now. I also think having top part to secure the dock will allow them to grip it less tight on the sides, resulting in a much better experience.
Yikes $60 for a usb cable/charger and buncha plastic. Don't tell me you guys are paying $60 for that?
for $60, I would expect it to have it's own audio out to stereo, even if it's with 3.5mm. I shouldn't have to plug in the 3.5mm headphone jack.
It should also be utilizing the quick dock connects.
It should be as simple as me sliding the device in the dock. THATS IT.
It should charge and output the audio through a 3.5mm that you can plug into your aux (and keep it plugged in).
pshhhhh $60??? It should be 19.99 AT MOST!!! with the feathers I listed above.

I purchased a bracketron that connects to the ac vent. I first I never liked the idea. But traveling with GPS and other things running it would get hot with a high amp charger. Being on the vent certainly solved that problem and charged a lot quicker since it wasn't so hot.
I realize that Google and Amazon exist. I was looking for recommendations from other Epic owners on here.

I recommend the stock mount for the Epic 4G. It does get hot sometimes, but it has an 2.5mm socket for audio that you can run into the aux input on your car stereo and it activates car mode. I've had it for 18+ months now and haven't had any trouble with it and would be upset if it broke.
I can't remember where I got it (not Samsung), but it's probably not too hard to find.

Interesting concept. Does it move much?
No surprisingly little. I changed it a little so it squeezes the phone instead of sitting in the holder and I used small vacuum hose to protect the spots that touch the phone. Works well.
Its all on how you make it. There is no play in mine at all. I made mine so you have to slip it up under the top arms, and then rest the it on the bottom arms. then the reverse to get it out... Its very secure and never had to worry about it falling. I drive in Cleveland, so thats saying something.
. I took a fine file and filed and sharp edges made by the pliers. Then after a couple of coats with spray paint, its like I bought it from somewhere. I use no buffers and have marks on my case from my holder.
I've made a few (about 10 or so for a different phones) the key is just to take your time and make every bend as perfect as you can.
I might have to look into this. I have been slightly concerned about the fact mine is in a small case. I'm afraid the official one won't fit too well. I also wasn't actually impressed by the automatic car mode.
XxLostSoulxX, the Arkon ones look pretty nifty. Which one did you get? They have so many!

? I need something that will hold the phone where I can see it for GPS and music selection while I'm driving.
A lot of people think I'm crazy for sticking something on my phone but I seriously LOVE this thing I bought ( http://www.steelie.com/)
So you pretty much put tiny dongle on the back of your phone, which sticks due to a strong adhesive and that dongle has a magnet that attaches to a ball you can stick on your car too.
I've had for awhile on my SGSII and when I removed it, it came off with no sticky residue or anything! Once I get a back screen protector for my nexus 4 I'm sticking it on there as well.
Here's a picture of my car with the car ball. http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/8111732688/in/pool-steelie
and here's another http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/8111732114/in/pool-steelie/
It's awesome because I literally walk in my car, scan the NFC sticker and stick it on the ball. SNAP on. It's adjustable since its a ball you can move it around.
The only downside was the price. It's a bit expensive but seriously, I cannot have chosen a better product.
I feel like I'm an advert for them but seriously. It's awesome. Watch their youtube video! They started from kickstarter too (random tidbit)

Have you thought about attaching that magnet to the back of a case and placing the nfc tag inside where the back of the phone would be?
It would be a good way to keep the back of the phone clean and still have a way to attach it to your car.
Steelie looks really cool, but it's quite pricey for what it is. I'd mount the phone ring on a case rather than right on the back.

That's how I had it on my SGSII, attached it to a TPU case. It worked pretty good too but the back is so nice on the nexus4 that I didn't want to cover it entirely so I was gunning for a bumper+backscreen protector.
Either way the phone attachment comes off readily with no residue issue when it comes to it

Either way the phone attachment comes off readily with no residue issue when it comes to it
It is X_x that's the only down side. If you're pro you can semi build one your own! lol just need a strong magnet and a ball to attach on your car.

Works like a champ.
I pray someone creates an inductive charging car stand/holder for us.
if there's anyone else looking to buy the steelie, the shipping is only $5 on amazon.

Two that I found. I'll be purchasing one of them and trying it out soon. Says its fits the Optimus G which is essentially what this phone is.

Yes, this exactly. I want an inductive charging mount.
The steelie looks interesting, but would probably render the induction charging useless. I wonder if the large magnet on the back would fight with the induction current from the charger base?

They started from kickstarter too (random tidbit)

just wondering if the phone socket is reusable.

It is. I just sold my SGSII and phone socket is sitting on my desk until I apply it on my Nexus 4. They give you lifetime replacements for the sticky part that goes on the back of the phone socket, so I had them send me a new one for free.
All I need is my back screen protector and my bumper until I apply it back on
I'm using an Arkon MG114. It was cheap and does the trick. I miss my GSII t989 car dock. I don't have the bumper on my phone yet, though I think it would work.

Galaxy S 5 Car mount

Recommend the best car mount here for Galaxy S 5.
A bit more expensive, but the CraigsDocks Dock is billet aluminum and low-profile and is true one-hand operation and adjustable to work with S2, S3, S4, Note series and now the S5.
http://www.craigsdocks.com/samsung-galaxy-s3-s4-note-2-3-car-dock/
I've had mine a year and won't have to buy a new one when I upgrade to the S5 because it fits all large Samsung superphones.
It's also adjustable to work with ALL cases, including the extra large cases that have built-in batteries.

Just found this one and share it here: 3in1 Car Mount Kit for SamsungS5
I will be hoping to get The Air Dock shortly after my S5. This will be the best car dock hands down. Just need to make sure the S5 wireless charging covers or stickers don'd take long to arrive.

For everyone that wants an affordable car dock WITHOUT glass suction cups, I would get this:

fits in your CD SLOT. it's GENIUSSS, just look at allt he reviews. its perfect eye level for the driver too!

The air dock is what ultimately tipped the balance for me getting an S5, after seeing it I knew built-in Qi charging was a must have and since Sprint only offers the Nexus 5 in 16GB flavor (not nearly enough, I've got 15GB of stuff on my SD card today which easily exceeds the 12GB formatted capacity, not to mention 2 years from now).
Hope they will make something like this one :

Air Dock hands down.
Another vote for Craigsdocks. Absolutely the most adaptable car dock out there. Very well designed and crafted. Well worth the the cost.

It looks nice but the expense of it, $70 +20 for the charging coil, then still need a car charger so there's another $30(for an OEM)its a lot of money.
I got one of these a while back and its quite good, just make sure to hold the back of the phone whilst removing or sometimes the back cover comes lose on a clip or two with S4, the magnetism is quite strong.

How can it be good when it doesn't even charge the phone?

Because its so hard to plug in USB lol, is it really worth an extra $75? Also there's no way that thing could output 2A so charging is going to be much slower, just my opinion.
I just order this Car Mounthttp://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00C9...qid=1396885686&sr=8-11&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70 yesterday. Should be here tomorrow or Thursday with prime shipping.

have you ever used this before? I'm curious to know if it would cause any damage to the internals of the CD slot. I see it has amazing reviews at Amazon (which I trust for the most part) but wondering if you had any personal experience with it...
if it looks to be good, I may get one for the S5 and my iPad Mini (for a long road trip later this summer)

notice my cd changer is curved out but the rubber "fins" still fit snug and very sturdy. They are rubber and do no damage. if for some reason it just will not fit in there on your car model, you can always send it back worry free (with Prime) but it shouldn't be a problem. the grip has a light rubber pad and is controlled by a spring action adjustment. I love it because i can easily place my phone into it by pushing my phone up and in. I take it out with the same motion, press up and pull out. it is made in Korea and the material and parts are very well made.
I really don't know why some of the people here are buying 50-70 dollar suction phone mounts. that is a total rip off.

thanks for the detailed write-up and pics! I have the phone and iPad version sitting in my Amazon wishlist right now... maybe will push them to checkout next payday
Upon inspection of both of my vehicles, it looks like it will work really well and actually sit at a great height (within arms and eyes reach) and not block any controls to anything else (only blocking a clock in my Civic and a clock/temp screen in my Highlander)
thanks again :good:

I ordered a similar one, well basically identical, and it fits superbly in my 2008 honda accord exl. It sits just below all the controls. I was some what worried about it not reaching out far enough as the cd player is recessed when compared with all the radio and nav controls. But it's about as perfect as possible. The best part about this mount in my opinion is that it keeps a person like myself from having to many items on the windshield. Without this I'd have- Radar Detector, Phone, toll tag, and gps, way to many things, phone being the largest of them all. Anyway, I'll take some pictures and maybe a mini review later. I highly recommend to anyone who want a good out of the way docking solution.

thanks! I'd love to see pictures. I have an '08 civic ex... by looking at my dash, it seems like it would sit above all my controls and only cover up that little screen that shows the radio station and the time.
