I just got a TB... Why would the put the USB port on the side so you can’t use the kickstand?? This makes no sense to me. If you are using your kickstand you are -
a. probably using it on a desktop, counter, etc. where you are going to be able to plug it in....
and
b. watching videos like movies that are going to drain the battery quickly!!
Why the H would they not put it on the other side so you could have the USB plugged in and the kick stand out at the same time? It makes the kickstand practically useless. Plus if you are watching movies with the kick stand closed it covers the speaker and muffles the sound.... wow not a good design.
My kickstand locks in place pretty good which allows me to use it with the USB facing up.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
That works if you don’t have a case. But I have a rubber type black case and that adds enough weight that the kickstand won’t stay open.
The question remains? How could they have missed that in the design?
It was no design flaw my friend...HTC clearly wants you to buy their docking station

QFT.
Why the hell else would they do it? Kind of silly to even put the kickstand there at all though. I'd rather not have it (and it be in the way of my speakerphone muffling the damn thing) then have it and not be able to use it while not charging.

The kickstand works that way, flush against a table in upside-down mode, as long as you have a charging cable plugged in. It adds just enough extra support to help out the kickstand.

Have you tried it with the charging cable plugged in? Works for me. I don't have a case, but I do have a heavy 2750 mAh battery and it still works this way. Would be better still if HTC had used a stiffer spring. I'm also going to get a down-angle microUSB cable so it looks a little nicer without the cable sticking straight up.
You can do what we did with the Dinc: get a business card holder and dremmel a spot for the USB cable to come through. Only costs like $3-5.

Yea, I thought the same thing but with it on the side you can stand it up and use it for an alarm clock plugged in.
Simple. They thought charging in the portrait orientation was more important than the landscape orientation.
This is just silly. There is nothing wrong with the design. The kickstand is there for portable use with battery. When charging, it's expected that the user will use a charging/multimedia/car base, where the holder provides the charging connection.

And like I need one more thing to carry back and forth to work every day... Oh wait... let me guess... I should buy 2 charging stand so I can leave one at work??!??! That does sound better than just putting the kick stand on the proper f’ing side!!!
That's your choice. Maybe if your eyes weren't rolling up in their sockets, you could find one. Maybe if you were doing work at work, instead of watching videos on your phone, you could afford one.
One of my favorite things I do in meetings is pop that kickstand out and stand it upright. All the Evo jokers bust out their Evo, try it....and it falls over.
I also like that I can stand it upright and charge it at the same time.
Just admit it folks. Even HTC makes design flaws and errors of judgement. 1400 mA battery...?

I agree, I thought (and still think) the USB port placement and orientation of the kickstand is a major apparent oversight... it was one of the first things I noticed when I got the phone. I thought, "Whoa, that can't be right!" I thought I had opened the kickstand wrong or something, hahahaha.
However, not saying it's not a flaw, I think it's definitely a flaw, it does work when plugged in upside-down. Even with the extended battery on, mine still holds up upside-down.
Still though, REALLY? I can't believe they didn't think of that...
And nobody has a desk dock! (Except for the person who will surely post right after me who does have one and feels it necessary to chime in. )
Definately a poor choice for usb port placement... upside down is not the solution, and upright messes up the widangle for porn!
And correct me if I am wrong, but the HTC dock doesn't accommodate the extended batter, either. Right? Or should I buy a dremel tool the same day?

Be happy it has a kickstand at all... Never had them on any other phone.
I only use mine for charging in nightstand mode setting vertical.
Don't need to watch movies on my phone that is what a laptop or TV is for.
Makes sense to me. No pun intended. I don't need video capabilities nor do I use it that way. I also do not normally combine charging and using the kickstand.
kendive, I sent you a +1 for making the most logical post on this so far, IMO.

Now, the charging port is on left side....and if you have to use the kickstand, say to watch youtube or live stream movies, you cant charge it same time coz the kickstand is such that the phone will stand on the left side,i.e. left side is facing down, so obviously you cannot connect charging port....duh...they could not even think of this simple design logic?
Odds are if your watching videos your holding the phone, because most phones today dont have a kickstand for you to do so. though you could probably flip the phone around and put something between the kickstand and the phone to keep it up while you charge
Plus the phone kickstand also works upward as well, so for skype video calls you still can charge
Seems like a Third party will make a landscape dock if it becomes a huge issue, which i doubt... no offense
Just finding things to complain about. not everything can work out perfect..
maybe they did this to get people to buy a dock
Left side kickstands were on clearance.
I'm sure we can find some China made back replacements that have the kick stand going in the other direction.
I do agree though, it's silly that MOTO made it that way when Android can rotate easily in the other direction. Maybe they could have at least designed it to be universal and snap on either way.

I'm retracting my stupid Q, because it was in fact probably the stupidest thing I've ever asked, lol. I wasn't thinking about the kickstand only being one way.
Evo user here. Trolling the TB forum, because I have a friend that is on VZW, and she is going crazy in waiting for this thing to drop.
I must say, that this is a pretty big blunder. I use my EVO on the kick-stand in landscape all the time, while charging. Can't imagine how this was overlooked and/or ignored.
Dumb, dumb, dumb, but that is just my opinion...
My charging port is on the left too. But my kickstand on my case is awesome so this isn't the case.
Sent from my Rooted God-like HTC Vision.
Can it not use the kickstand in the other direction? As in lay it on the right edge and the stand flat on the ground?
I thought a video showed them doing it. They said the spring was stronger than EVO and this actually worked.

I think so, yes, but that would be in Portrait (<-edited), which is not ideal for video watching (what I do with my Evo while plugged in sometimes).
It does appear to be a lot better kickstand (wider, stronger spring, etc.) than the Evo.

I think you meant portrait.
But I do mean landscape on the right edge, not left. Which would put the charge plug at the top (also not ideal).
Essentially when you flip out the kick stand, instead of laying the phone so the kickstand has a space under it, like a tripod, lay the phone the other way, where the kickstand is flat on the ground in its entire width and the spring supports the weight of the phone upright.

Ahh, I see what you are saying. If that is the case, then my concern would be proven moot....
You wouldn't be able to replace the kickstands as the cover comes off halfway and the stand stays intact. The stand is part of the body of the phone, not the case.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I call this the "Right handed" landscape. I find it perfect with the kickstand.
As far as the charging port. I find that it is better on the left.
If I was using my right hand to click and use the phone the cord would be in my way over my arm constantly. Instead it would be under my arm and out of the way.
Though the location in any case being at the bottom is better than top, it's still hard to hold the phone with the left hand being in the way.
I'm not going to be using it for movies often. My workplace more or less doesn't want to even see it on the desk so using it as a nice desk clock is even out.
Coming from the EVO, all I can say is this has me a little worried but not deterred. I'd say this is more of a blemish as opposed to a big fault though. I'll most likely just put up with it.
Also being an EVO user, I can say that my kickstand saw A LOT of use while on the charger.
After all, the kickstand was designed for watching porn hands free.
The placement of the charge port only shows that HTC might have plans for it, like the canceled Desktop dock by HTC for the Droid Incredible, citing landscape support as the cause of cancellation.
I've seen a couple of videos that show the ThunderBolt being used in portrait mode (ie: standing up) using the kickstand which would free up the USB connector for charging instead of landscape where it blocks the port.
as for the kickstand not being replaceable, that might be a flaw in design but that area of the phone is also the unibody aluminum frame. We can be grateful that HTC decided to make the entire battery/sim/microSD area accessible via a removable battery cover on top of the Unibody frame. Seeing the reviews of the Desire HD and Inspire 4G its one of the cons of the unibody design since its hard to remove the battery/microSD/sim card.
and yes, this phone will have a SIM for the LTE service, its even been shown off how the SIM slot is accessible in the unboxing video Wirefly posted, and that is a pretty nifty way to hide it, kudos to HTC on the design.
I can't wait to hear the sound quality of the back speaker under the kickstand, i've been waiting for something louder than the Incredible, the sound quality is top notch for a phone with that size of a speaker but its not loud enough for use in somewhat louder conditions like working in a loud environment where earbuds are not allowed etc.

Did ya ever think about turning it over while charging and watching? You seriously never had a "kick-lay" on a bike growing up? Who said kickstands always have to stand, man?

Now you will want a desk dock to charge the phone while you Skype or watch videos.
I currently have a htc aria using a charging cradle to charge my phone when I'm home and about to get an inspire soon and was wondering if anyone has tried a this charging cradle for their inspire. I assume the desire hd and the inspire have the exact location for the usb port so it should fit fine? I'm trying to get the same cradle as my aria that would fit the inspire when I get it since the one I have for the aria works great.
Heres what I was looking at from eBay:

Honestly it's what I'd expect for $18 from HKG... I won't use it, I'm going to return it to Amazon. It's snug side to side, but you really have to get it just right to slide down onto the USB adaptor. This is common with any aftermarket dock, and always concerns me that sliding it on and off might damage after a while.
It'd be nice if it were a little better quality, but oh well. I don't like it, and won't be using it.
I have the Zagg invisible shield on the phone. I like it because of the ease of getting replacements if the device is replaced or if I have any issues with it. Got it at best buy for $20, but used a 12% off coupon and a $5 rewardzone certificate, so came in at about $12, which I think you can do better on eBay\Zagg.com lol... I just have instant gratification disorder, hehe

I finally received my cradle in today. Looks like the one I have for the aria, but the fitment is different for the inspire. Feels a bit loose around the sides and looks like there should of been a spot to have a 3.5mm audio jack next to the usb. Stability with the phone on the cradle feels like it is unstable if you touch the screen a lot with the phone on the cradle. It seems ok for what I'm using it for though. I only have it to charge while I sleep so it should be ok as I don't touch it. All in all, it could be better, but gets the job done.

Ok so I have only had my Thunderbolt for 26 hours but the kickstand is just a total utter joke! At first I was shocked and appalled that they would design the kickstand so you couldn’t use it and have the USB plugged in at the same time. As bad as that is I don’t really see myself using the kickstand that much…
But it covers the speaker!!?!?! Who designs a speaker and then says... “Ok let’s put a flush tight steel plate over the top of it”?!?!?
It clearly muffles the sound in all uses of the phone. Even if you can hear ok you know it will sound better if the kickstand is out. So I’m walking around talking on speaker with the kickstand out! Watching YouTube with the kickstand out! Just a joke!
So the mod I want is to be able to remove the kickstand all together. I can’t wait for the YouTube video that shows me how to take my phone apart so I can get that dumb piece of steel out of the way!
Hahaha +1
I totally agree with you, that kickstand/USB design is FUBAR! I can't believe someone signed off on that. And then, as you said, someone was brilliant enough to put the speaker behind it! It almost seems like a cruel joke!
OK I just did the magnet test on that dumb piece of metal and its aluminum… Same thing… I want it off of the front of my speaker!
you know you can stand it up with the kickstand and charge at the same time right???
i agree with the speaker thing...had to do a double take to see if they really put the speaker there...doesn't bother me anymore tho
And everyone was like “yeah stay away from Motorola and Samsung... HTC’s quality and designs are just so much better…”
And here it is, their flagship phone (for a few weeks) has one of the stupidest design flaws I could ever dream up!

So even though maybe 5% of Thunderbolt owners have a desk mount you ruin the kick stand… You couldn’t redesign the desk mount to plug-in on a side or have a cable that pugs in on top, or have USB ports on both sides?? This is the flagship phone after all…
And forget all that. So they have to do it that way for the 5% of desk mount buyers and promote people to shell out more money for them... fine.
But don’t cover the bloody speaker with the piece of metal!!
This thread is a joke, if you don't like it the return it.... Don't cry to the masses about it, specially since 90% of people on this particular forum are for this device not against it
HTC made a mistake, so what? This phone is effing awesome and makes up for that and so much more

Heck I cannot even hear a difference in the speaker with the kickstand open or closed. I love the kickstand and I love the way the TB sounds and I've never even needed to charge and use the kickstand at the same time. The OP should have considered this stuff before he bought it if it bothers him so much.
I just pop-in the spare battery....I rock my kickstand to the grave!
Actually a good quick mod for using the kickstand in the opposite way is you could put something on the end of it like a sticky bump thing (sorry didn't know the technical term for that). This will put the device at a more perpendicular viewing angle (albeit viewable) but also by gravity, take less stress off the hinge thus having it not close as easily. Most of the weight would would be distributed across the side of the phone that is touching the table surface. Sorry it is 10 PM in hawaii so I couldn't find a sticky bump thing to explain what I meant so I just leaned it against my old Pre sleeve.

Yup sorry about that, I kind of just thought of that now. I have been using the original way I posted for a couple days now at work and every once in a while someone would bump the table and the phone would fall backward.
When taking these pictures I wondered why it felt more sturdy in different places on my couch. Then I noticed that the surface on the couch was not flat like a table and saw that the more perindicular angle puts more weight on the phone rather than the hinge. Funny how things turn out sometimes.

Good idea using it upside-down.

So it turns out the TB has a built in car mount. I flipped open the kick stand, tilted up the center vents, slid the kick stand in, and it's like it was made to be. A nice secure car mount in the center of my dash, that magically disappears when I remove it.
Sounds ghetto, but it works. I never liked the car dock apps, and I liked having a big car mount cluttering the joint up even less. Goes great with my self retracting car charger.
Obviously all vent's might not be suited to this.
Hmmm... I'll have to try it but I can't see it being very stable, especially with the weight of the extended battery.

I posted this on the other thread but I guess no one has posted a review for the cardock.
I have the stock HTC One X car mount and it is not a joy to use.
The stock relies on these grooved sides to hold the phone in, and when you slide in the phone sometimes you have to wiggle to get the USB to plug in. Further, because it holds the phone pretty tightly, it's not easy to remove the phone. I have to use both hands to get my phone out of the car mount.
I guess it just comes down to the fact that it grips the phone really tight and there is not a "catch" to release. You kind of squeeze the phone into the tracks to place, and pulllll it out when you're done.
The good news is that the suction cup works really well. It's very stable and it had not fallen off at all in the last 48 hours, even when I am tugging on it to get my phone out.
The metallic joint between the suction and the arm doesn't really rotate except in a circle, you cannot change the angle it comes out at. The joint between the phone holder and the metallic arm is more mobile.
The phone uses USB to charge. The USB clicks into the bottom and works well. It comes with a long cord, I'm not sure how long but plenty to reach from my cigarette lighter to the windshield w/ comfortable excess cord.
I had been having some issues with the USB not perfectly fitting into the phone when I squeeze the phone through the tracks, but the track is so tight that I cannot maneuver the phone to get the USB to go in. Each time it's maybe 1mm off, but it's frustrating. Twice I had to remove the stand from my windshield to get it in.
Once it's setup, however, this is a very stable stand that will keep your phone very secure while driving.

Why they don't use the pogo pins (5 little holes on the back of the phone) confuses me. They put them there, but their own dock doesn't use them.
The Nexus One car dock I use is awesome because it connects using the pogo pins on the bottom of the phone.
Yeah I agree. POGO pins would get rid of the USB-aiming issues I am having w/ my dock now. I also think having top part to secure the dock will allow them to grip it less tight on the sides, resulting in a much better experience.
Yikes $60 for a usb cable/charger and buncha plastic. Don't tell me you guys are paying $60 for that?
for $60, I would expect it to have it's own audio out to stereo, even if it's with 3.5mm. I shouldn't have to plug in the 3.5mm headphone jack.
It should also be utilizing the quick dock connects.
It should be as simple as me sliding the device in the dock. THATS IT.
It should charge and output the audio through a 3.5mm that you can plug into your aux (and keep it plugged in).
pshhhhh $60??? It should be 19.99 AT MOST!!! with the feathers I listed above.
just bought this universal one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ELOOZO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
the reviews are amazing, hopefully it will work well with our ONE x.
will post pics&reviews when i get it
It works great with my trusty Mountek. All plugs easily accessible.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA Premium HD app

If this fits, let us know. Worried about the side part covering the charging port.
A week after ordering and still no shipment.
Rabble rabble rabble.
I like the official car dock. It's really slick, and slides in and out with ease, but rests very stable.
Dang it, everyone is out of stock until mid june

Interesting to hear you don't have problems getting it in and out for the official car dock but then the person on the 1st page said they had a lot of trouble.
This one looks promising...

Fits with or without case.
Has the top tab for possibly easier connecting.
