Almost every tablet introduced to marked is instantly named (by sensationalistic press) 'iPad killer', which yet has to be seen. But reading posts around here looks like Transformer is going to be a real killer of his Android brother Xoom. Rumors are saying Xoom sales are not so great, but if everybody who promised on this forum returns his Xoom sales could become even negative.
Xoom is decent, but there are only a few ways it can survive and number one is drop the price. It can't be $150 more than the Acer it's right next to at Best Buy.
Sure, it has more memory but a lot of people just plan on adding a memory card later. The other thing that can help it is if the Transformer continues to have supply issues. If the Transformer is next to the Xoom at Best Buy with an IPS screen for $200 cheaper?
The Xoom will collect dust.
Motorola was the Xoom killer The pricing was a debacle.

Is it true that the Xoom was supposed to be the flagship Honeycomb device? If so, Google should have waited and thrown its weight behind the Transformer.
I'm an Apple fanboy, and I've been using the Transformer way more than my iPad 2. The higher resolution is awesome, the browser is very great, I like I can load apps from anywhere, it has a memory card slot....
(Now if they can just release an update to make my .mp4 720p files not so choppy.... :-( Good thing unless I'm traveling I don't really watch much on tablets, just surf on the couch pretty much.)

I don't think any tablet has seriously been called an "iPad killer" other than maybe in tongue in cheek or wishful thinking. iPad is just so far ahead of everything right now. Will be a long while before Android can seriously lure in average non-techie customers in Apple like numbers.
As for a Xoom killer. I think that is more Motorola's work than ASUS. It was stupid to release only a 3G model first and waiting months to release a wifi model.
I think not releasing a 16GB model was a bad decision (there are rumors there might be one coming).
Selling the 3G tablet and then telling the customers they'll have to mail it in to get the 4G upgrade isn't good.
Still no working micro SD slot, what is going on with that?
And for the price, I think not using an IPS display was a bad decision too.
From what I can see, Google hasn't thrown their weight behind ANY Honeycomb tablet yet, nor Honeycomb itself. I'm not sure what they're doing, really--the Market remains a mess in terms of finding Honeycomb- or tablet-specific apps, and I'd think we'd have had a Honeycomb update already resolving some of the bugs and performance issues we're seeing.
That said, having owned a Xoom and now a Transformer, I honestly can't see how Motorola expects to make the Xoom a success. I was a fan of the Xoom at first, even defending the pricing given that it was the first Honeycomb tablet and offered theoretically more functionality than an iPad.
Since then, however, Motorola has only provided a single update offering less value than Asus has provided in less than half the time (and Asus seems to be working hard to fix whatever caused the bricking issue and have certainly communicated more effectively). They haven't enabled the SD card slot, something both Acer and Asus have managed to do. And the biggest draw, 4G capability, is nowhere to be seen.
Honestly, I can't think of a single reason to justify getting the Xoom over the Asus (or Acer, for that matter), even if they were priced the same. Not having a 16GB version at $499, at worst, against the Acer 16GB at $459 and Transformer 16GB at $399, and the Xoom is, well, doomed. Put them on a shelf all together, and the Transformer will kill everyone else. If shipped in quantity and stocked correctly (i.e., side-by-side with the iPad 2 at $499), the Transformer could even put a small dent in Apple's market share.
Throw in the keyboard dock, and the Transformer could dominate the next few months. Not sure what Motorola can do to save the Xoom...

They could make it a freebie in a cereal packet. I can picture the future packaging design on the box now, "Re-use your box: Fold along this line to turn it into a case for your Xoom". Although there would probably be some muppet who would end up trying to sue them after choking on it.

Personally what killed the Xoom was how long it took to be available in Ireland. Very annoying to want to buy something and it not being available despite all the stories about how poor the sales were in the US. Price and lack of apps probably killed it for other people. Motorola should have made it available to developers world wide straight away but I guess that is too much to hope for when Google didn't even bother to have the Nexus One available in most countries.
We will get our Honeycomb update during Google I/O.

Xoom sales are zero, Fact! Motorola has downgraded it's own economic forecast because of such poor sales.
I can see the same thing happening with HTC, if they don't pull their head out of their bottom with Flyer pricing
I'm swapping them if only to save $200.

Yeah, it's like HTC priced it 6 months ago and they're sticking to that price, no matter what the market is telling them.
Funny, I would've trampled my granny to get to a 7" HTC tablet last year. Now, meh ...

The xoom pricing isn't far off from apple ipad 2 pricing. The bigger mistake was not offering wifi only at launch and not offering a 16gb one at ipad's 16gb price.

I have a problem with Motorola thinking they should/could compare themselves to the Ipad pricing. Apple's top dogs here and you have to compete against them, not be more expensive.
Just think it was presumptuous of Moto. If Asus can get their supply issues in order that will prove true.
Reading this forum, I'm just wondering, what is Motorola doing with all that "open box" tablets people returning when swapping to Transformer or A500?

Is anyone migrating to the Xoom?
From what I can see, the Xoom has a better screen and Honeycomb. If the G tablet really gets HC is the Xoom really worth USD 200 more?
Thanks

Ivanthompson,
Only you can make that decision; if the G Tablet fulfills the requirements you had for an Android Tablet then there really is NO reason to jump to anything else. This tablet is an open platform that does everything the Xoom does (except for 3/4G). Having said that this always boils down to personal preference.
The G Tablet still does everything I need it to do; the devs will LEAP on HC once the real source is released have no fear there. Also with guys like it2steve doing his best to bring us accessories that are available and at a good price we really have all the things we need going forward.
If you are the type of person that hops to the next new shiny thing that comes out then between now and June you will be jumping like a jack rabbit!
Personally I am satisfied with what I have... I am staying....
Rick
As a developer, I really want a Xoom just so I can start developing with the Honeycomb API w/o relying upon the emulator, which is slow and painful to use.
The G-tablet does everything I need for my own personal use and I'm still blown away by the speed of the hardware 5 months after purchasing.
If I had Honeycomb on my G-Tablet I wouldn't even think twice about the Xoom (other than maybe the screen, but it's pretty rare the G-Tablet's screen bothers me).
Plus, I have a feeling they'll be giving away a Xoom to everyone at the Google I/O conference this year and I'm waiting to see if I was 1/10 people to win a free ticket via their Last Call for I/O Android contest which I completed last week. So if I do end up winning, I'll at least wait until after Google I/O to see if I get a free Xoom. But I'm hoping Honeycomb source will be released by then....

+1 here.
Very happy with Gtab. 1 tablet + 4 different roms to play with !
The GTAB is actually faster than the Xoom right now (I have both). HC actually needs a little bit of work, imo.
Eventually the GTAB will be the old horse to put out to pasture, but we're not quite at that point, yet. Xoom does have the better screen and camera, so points for that.
Thanks for your insights.
I'll probably wait for HC on the GT before trying something else.

Checked it out today. The xoom screen has some poor quality viewing angles too. It is ok on a $379 tab but on a $799 ridiculous. Your choice, just thought I would mention, that the grass isn't greener--pun intended--from all viewing angles.
I personally plan to own several tabs in all sizes and flavors. Hey, why not? For me it makes good business sense to cross pollenate. Holding the xoom didn't feel as good as holding GTab. Verizon's logo permanently etched on the top right-hand side was distracting as well as tacky. They should have put on one of those peel off stickers like they do on laptops telling you intel or whatever is inside. Go for it, if it works for you. I went in for a 2nd tab today and came out empty handed. Oh well, the playbook will be released on April 19, they are taking prelim orders now at Best Buy.
I won't be buying it until I put my hands on it and drive it first. Oh yeah, the xoom had quite a few force closes while I was playing with it to my surprise.
Has anybody seen the Creative Ziio up-close? Some of the specs are mediocre and some good like the audio capability its boosting if it works. Also, it's a 7 inch coming in around $279.

You mean better camera. The screen has some viewing angle issues too. I went in to buy today and left out empty handed. $799 for a camera and operating system doesn't make good business sense to me. Glad you like it. Are you having the FC issues? Happened to me a few times while I was playing with it.
With the announcement of the new Galaxy Tab and it's lower price, the Xoom doesn't look all that appealing anymore. I love my G, but will seriously consider a switch in June to the Samsung due mostly to thickness, available accessories and HC.

Love my gtab got it for 279 a month or so ago from Sears outlet.com and picked it up an hour away from home. Xoom is overpriced for a little bit more screen Res and honeycomb. Screen is not as bad as many say on gtab if tablet is used as tablet. If wanna CPU use a CPU. Not to mention don't need data plan. not to mention someone will get honeycomb on it soon enough.Use home wifi and 3g hotspot hack with data throttle hack on my DX. Ha Verizon up your big red Best bang for your Buck as far as tabs go as of today.
If you use wifi and dont need 3g I don´t see why to switch and pay a lot more for the xoom. Same processor, in benchmarks practically the same, just for a better screen and camera plus honeycomb that will be around us very soon I don´t think its worth it imo
Other than to be a "hey look what i have" kinda person i really don't see much point in going to a different tab. I'm happy with my tab. Lets face it...other than surfing the web and playing with some apps these tabs are limited. So why would i want to go spend $600 on one...i can get a smokin laptop for that kinda money.
Reports have shown that the xoom sales have been underwhelming.
I could buy a Xoom if I wanted to, not the issue.
But the Gtab does so much more than the other Tablets, and price is not the issue.
I use my Gtab everyday and it's rock steady.
Yes, I wish I could connect to a Cisco VPN (anytime connect), but not sure if the Xoom would even support that.
I played around with the Xoom for awhile and it was heavy and didn't blow my socks off.
Screen definately better...
Until there is a stable Andriod Tab that clearly blows the Gatb away. I'm staying with it...

I'm not, but the gtab does for me. Even at close to $500, I'd still have to say Notion Ink Adam with PixelQi is a better value, but at this point I'll be holding out for Tegra3 kal-el and/or whatever the other SoC makers can do with cortex-a9.
I'll still want a PixelQi screen or mirasol as I'd REALLY like to be able to use them outside on sunny days and still have good battery runtime.
I'm guessing the xoom people are laughing at us now for getting something that's less than 800 they paid for theirs. Have you guys been to the xoom forum? They seem like a proud bunch over there. Yeah, proud to pay $800 for something that will be out of date 5 months from now.
I do not see a reason to upgrade to a new tablet anytime soon from the G-tab. Need to wait until a tegra 3 or 4 is out to make a decent enough reason for me to switch.
I've had the GTab since December and think it's an awesome tablet for the money given all of the great dev work going on.
However, after playing with the Xoom at Best Buy the other day, there's simply no comparison to the Xoom's screen and viewing angles. It's not that I care about others being able to see the GTab's screen, but I find it annoying that to watch a video I need to keep the GTab's screen just right, even in landscape, to keep the colors from washing out. And that's just for one person watching! And forget about portrait mode or watching with the tablet lying flat on a table.
The Xoom can do all of these things no problem. No washout, totally viewable from all angles and horizontally on the table. Seemed almost on par with the iPad. Also, while I didn't play with it long enough to make an informed opinion on Honeycomb, I thought the Xoom was plenty responsive, regardless of Quadrant scores. Maybe only slightly less so than the GTab with Vegan.
Whether the Xoom worth the extra money (to me, at least), I'm not so sure. But the WiFi version is in the right ballpark and is awfully tempting...

They are not dumping it, its just being priced competitively given the availability $400 IPS tegra 2, HC Asus Transformer.
Any way amazon's deal (via woot) was way better given it was $280 to your door step (no taxes or shipping fees).

Well, I can think of one giant design flaw that marred an otherwise great tablet (hey, let's take the most important part of the tablet and make it really, really, really crappy!). I would not be surprised to see this sucker at $200 new within the next couple of months with the onslaught of HC tablets hitting the market at sub-$500 prices.

You're talking about the screen? I've had my gtab for a couple months now. Been taking it everywhere with me. In fact, myself and a couple others from the lab attended a meeting to share our designs and experiments at a meeting. I whipped out the gtab and began sharing our autocad drawings and calculations. People were impressed. A few asked intently about my tablet.
The point is I've had no problem at all with the screen. I don't understand why people are crying bloody murder about this aspect of it. May be because you guys are spoiled?
To me, this is not a design flaw. It's not even a weakness. It just is. It makes the gtab different.
I have the Asus now, and I guess you just don't know what you're missing until you've seen a superior screen in the flesh. My jaw literally dropped when I turned it on. Straight-on, the gTab has a great screen, but the viewing angles are terrible, and I consider that a design flaw, as in they went really cheap with the screen. The Acer A500 does not have an IPS screen, yet its viewing angles are almost comparable to the Transformer, so it is possible. Whoever manufactured the gTab just cut corners on the most crucial part of a tablet.
If you're happy with yours, that's great, but that screen ran me off, and I can't recommend it to anyone when they can (eventually) have a Transformer for about $100 more.
Kinda wish I'd kept mine another week so I could post the difference so you could see for yourself, but I don't suppose it matters

I have an iPad2, the gTablet, an Acer netbook, a Dell laptop, and a 2010 MacBookPro.
The gTablet uses the exact same LCD as the acer Netbook. You can tell the screen is designed for a slightly off center nearly dead on viewing angle, and if you hold it so, it's quite fine.
You won't be able to see much at more than 10-15 degrees off center left/right (in landscape) or up/down (portrait)
It is what it is. It's not an iPad. It's not the $120 more Asus. It's the cheapest Tegra2 with great modding support here at xda you can buy. I wouldn't spend more than $280 on it, but for $280 its great.

If you look at it straight-on, it is a great screen. If you look at it few degrees left or right, it loses quality but is still viewable. A few more degrees, and things become mushy. Tilt it slightly vertically and that's where the frustration really begins -- imagine those psychedelic videos where colors transform and turn negative. Like the post above said, it's a pure netbook screen and is meant to be viewed as you would with a netbook. Sticking it in a tablet was a cost-cutting shortcut.
Now, if you buy a case that props it up, it helps quite a bit. I'm not dogging the gTab really, it's a great tab that just needs to come down in price a little more in light of the the Transformer's release. If you're going to spend $280+ on a tablet, I'd advise you to spring for the extra $120 that will get you a Transformer.

Don't get me wrong. Whenever someone asks me about my gtab, I tell them it's not for them and recommend an ipad or ipad 2. I do that with pretty much everything nowadays. When people ask me I recommend them the most mainstream thing possible.
Well I don't feel so bad for directing a coworker to get an iPad 2 today She saw my Transformer and said she was looking at iPads, but she liked the widgets of Android (she has an Evo). I told her to just get an iPad, you pick it up and it's a vessel for apps, nothing more, and knowing her, I thought that was best.
But after playing with the Transformer, she's torn. So I guess that's a plus for HC, it's not as techie as I thought.

Well I found someone who bought it and I guess they were scared to try to do any custom ROM stuff and they sold it to me for $190. I think i got a deal, I am currently reading up on it before I try anything though. I have been using Android for well over a year now, I have a captivate and I always flash the newest ROM's that come out for it. I am hoping the G Tablet is about as easy as my captivate to mod. Anyone have a favorite ROM for the G Tab, I am looking at playing Pocket Legends and games like that.

You don't need to hope. Everything about the gtab is unlocked. It is currently the most hackable device out there.
Anyone have a favorite ROM for the G Tab, I am looking at playing Pocket Legends and games like that.

I've used them all. The one that seems to run the smoothest and fastest is the calkulin+clemsyn combo. I use the overclocked version 5 one.
That said, you really should try them all out one at a time. Again, it takes so little effort to flash a rom. Actually, it takes about 2 minutes for each rom to flash. Try each rom for a week and see how you like them.
Some people like vegan ginger because it's the latest and greatest. I personally like the fastest and most stable. Your choice.
Thank you very much for the information, i can't wait to dive in!

I currently have tNt 4.4 and I like it a lot. If/when I flash another rom, would I have to load all my Apps again? I have titanium backup but even then it would take a while to load them all. That might discourage me from trying ALL the roms out
hello, I've been recently looking at tablets. I want something pretty decently nice, with honeycomb (which you can put on this), and just generally nice specs. But my real question is, is this thing a piece of complete crap? it's off brand for things i buy usually, but I've seen generally good reviews. I've also been looking at the Transformer and the Xoom. Thank you all for the help.
considering that you can get one on Ebay for under $250, I would say yes, it's most definitely worth it.
Even with Froyo roms, it's a very useful tablet that will probably do the things that you want it to do. Yes, the screen angles are not ideal, but they are acceptable (in my opinion)
Put it this way, is buying a transformer, or Xoom for almost twice as much going to be just as useless when the newest tablets come out for Christmas?
I believe that it's a question of perception. What do you want to use it for?
and who knows, when Ice Cream Sandwich gets released, it may be easier to port to the G-Tablet than Honeycomb.
Well the transformer is only $150 more.. ill look up a comparison between the two. That was the other one I am still honestly considering

I guess my point was, is the transformer going to be just as obsolete when the new tablets arrive? Nvidea is releasing a new tegra platform, that will basically make anything running on a tegra2 old hat. This would include the Xoom, Transformer, Iconia, as well as the G-Tablet, Adam, Vega, etc. These things depreciate faster than a car driven off the dealer's lot. Originally what, $450 when they were released? I bought mine for $300 (with a few extras) on Ebay. now they are retailing for $250 in Woot deals and Tiger Direct, while used ones on Ebay are plummeting down to nearly $200. When the new Tegra devices are released, I suspect that a G-tablet can be bought for $100 used.
What I mean, is why not save the $150 now, to put toward a better tablet down the line...The g-tablet will at least give you a less expensive introduction to the android tablet world, while still being a quite useful tool.
I would just hate to see somebody spend more money on a similar tablet that will cause them buyers remorse in 3 months or so. Of course, if you have the cash to burn, then go ahead and buy what you really want...for most people, that's an iPad...jk

Honeycomb is not completely functional on the gtab (as of now). It is missing the Honeycomb specific drivers from Nvidia (aka full hardware acceleration, high def video).
If you really care about Honeycomb you should get the transformer IMO.
Although, I am quite happy with froyo based ROMs
Others are right in saying that quad core Tegra 3s are around the corner, Tegra 2 prices might drop by the end of the year. Given how Nvidia and Viewsonic acted regarding the gtab, I foresee support for Tegra 2s dropping drastically as newer hardware gets released.
Yeah the almost fully functioning honeycomb on here is fine for me. Should be ordering my g tab this week!

Hello, I wrote a quick review for some guys that I work with. I am sure there are many reviews of the gtablet, but...
Here are my conclusions so far;
This thing is about the same size as the Xoom, and thicker than the IPAD. It is definitely not as sexy.
The screen is OK. It is not a high quality screen like you find on the other devices.
The processor is great, and the memory is sufficient. Things move pretty quick.
The ROM out of the box REALLY sucked. I was hoping to just deal with it, but Google had not approved the tablet so there were NO Google apps at all. Not acceptable. It took me a couple of hours to learn (last night till around 1:00am), but I replaced the stock ROM with a hacked ROM with everything I wanted.
This thing is really just a big Android phone with no phone or GPS.
I loaded up my Sony Reader software, downloaded all of my books, and then imported them into a DRM capable reader that is better.
Although there are some ROMs that support Gingerbread screens, I think I will stick with this 2.2 (or is it 2.3) Android feel.
What will I use it for?
Reading ebooks, PDFs (Scientific American, Maximum PC)
Google apps – maps, search
Kayak, hotels.com apps
Games (mostly for the kids) – I got Android Market to work
Web Browsing / some forum reading (via Tapatalk)
Personal email reading and contacts (no work email will be set up)
Maybe occasional Skype and Gotomeeting (camera sucks, so mostly audio)
News and weather
Of course, with the exception of reading the ebooks, I would always use the Macbook Pro if it were available.
So the speed and memory makes this all possible, but the experience (screen, size, build) is not equivalent to the expensive tablets.
Biggest complaints?
No GPS
Screen is not easy to see at an angle
I needed to root the thing to make it useful, which means I now need to stay on top of that and update it manually
The 10.1 device is a bit bigger / bulkier than I expected – the weight is the same as the ipad I believe.
I “can” watch videos on it (even 1080p), but moving the files would be a drag… it uses a microSD card that I would need to pop ion an adapter, or I could use the USB connection. Maybe I can find a way to do it with wifi or Bluetooth.
No USB charging… WTF??? It comes with a separate adapter that has to plug into the wall…
The screen is a 1024x600 which is similar to most pads, but it is really inferior to the Macbook Pro, and there is just something that is “fuzzy” about it.
Biggest positives?
Cheap - $269 delivered (no tax or shipping)
Fast
Should do what I want…
Next Steps…
See how much I actually use it for anything other than ebooks. If I do end up needing it more than I think, I would consider the Asus Transformer or something else new in the next year or so.
Hope this helps,
R

The screen is complete crap.
You should look hard for something with a better screen around $300-$350. If you can find it, get it.
And I *like* my Gtab - but its really just for kicking around and messing with roms and android. The screen really is killer bad unless you use it only at night, head on
Honeycomb works, and works well, as well as you could hope for unsupported xda rom hacking - ie, no netflix, no Hardware acceleration, occasional stand on your head workarounds, and the possibility of sudden death... well, ok, not that last one.
Bottom line: if you can find it for $100-$200, and want to play with roms, and tweak, and screw with it a lot to get it to be as good as a $400 one except for the horrible screen that cannot be fixed, YES, this is your tablet.
If you want a tablet to take out of the box and use, with rom updates from the manufacturer, and a screen you can read ebooks off of, this is NOT your tablet. Even for free.
So should I just get the transformer? Ah so many decisions!

For $400, I'd say yeah.
Better screen, 1Kx800 resolution, 2x the ram. Yeah, looks like that's all worth $120.
Oh... and a GPS too.
Oh, and Honeycomb 3.1 from Asus. Plus lots of XDA love it seems.

I think the main question is what you want the tablet for or what to do with it.
A cheap $250-300 laptop has so much more computing power and practical use than any tablet...just a bit bulkier.
The tablet market will have much more offerings and better with faster cpus and such..just have to wait a bit.
I bought my gtab from woot 4/2011 for $275. I have installed several ROMs on it. They all are pretty good with their own pluses and minuses.
I'm currently on Flashback 5.4 HC: it looks nice and works well. Gmail, Talk - w/o video; G-Voice, Maps, Lattitude, Earth etc all work. You Tube works; a bunch of games works. The big screen is better than the phone size screen. Nice quick weather apps. Nice calendar.
What it cannot do is replace the screen and functionality of my desktop for real work.
If you can find a cheap Gtab and play with ROM's, flashing, androids quirks etc - jsut for the fun of it, then get a gtab. Fully flashable with great recovery process. Almost 99.99% Non-brickable. Get a used one for play and test.
If you want a decent a functional tablet w/o hassle, get an I-pad2.
I have read many complaints about the viewing angle of the screen, but I have had my tablet for months and I have no complaints. It has replaced my planner for work and is great for watching movies, not sharing with my neighbor.
I love android. I'm a fan boy. I admit it. But I will be in the market for a tablet in the next month or so, and at the time, the iPad 3 has the resolution I need. Is there any other tablets I'm missing that run ICS and would have a comparable (preferably higher) resolution in the near future?
and before anyone starts with the "oh you don't need that high of resolution." yes, I do. I'm a photographer and this will be used as a traveling portfolio. More pixels = more detail.
I've already checked out the new Transformer and the Acer A700 btw

Can I Ass-U-Me that you mean the up and coming Transformer Infinity?
If 1920x1200 isnt enough, then no, I havent seen a tablet (thats not DIY and probably cant be considered a tablet) with Android and a higher resolution...
Ill be straight with you and tell you I cannot stand Apple, mainly the price premium and Berlin wall OS...
HOWEVER, and trust me, my mouth tastes horridly of something foul when I type (and yes SAY as I have said it to someone else) here telling you that Apple got it right by going 4:3 for tablets and 16:10 for the new Mac laptop's...
For photo editing you will probably want to go with the iPad 3 for its resolution, but remember, 4:3 so if you take pictures in this fashion, it will be fine, but you wont see the true beauty of it unless you view it in a 16:10 or greater fashion
I spew my hatred all over the NARROWSCREEN 16:9 aspect ratio resolution monitors all day... stupid media industry brainwashing the masses
EDIT: As a Transformer TF101 (OG) owner, while I dont have the money, I would LOVE to have the up and coming TF-Infinity... I have 5 systems at home, personal ones at least, 2 desktop monitors 1920x1200, 2 laptop monitors 1920x1200, and a 1440x900 desktop (they are all pretty outdated, no quads to be found and 4GB, 2GB average, mostly parts PC's), my AT&T Galaxy Note (1280x800) and of course the TF101 at 1280x800.
Why do people think there is a price premium. Seriously do you know what you're talking about . IPad is very competitive on price. The OS may be locked down, but I have never come across anything thing I can't do. The iPad app store is far superior to androids. I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 & there are hardly any apps for it. You can do anything you want just as easily on an iPad.
I agree with Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, I've both in my house, and I really prefere the Samsung Tab.
Hello. I have a Galaxy Tab 7.7. I like it. It does it's job, but I can not recommend it until ICS will be out for it. I have rooted it and uninstall some bloatware and I use honeybar, but still... It is not quite it should be

1) put the flame thrower down, nobody said anything about price. Price isn't the issue.
2) you don't know my needs. I have literally hundreds of paid apps on android already, so I'd prefer to keep the Android os.
3) pretty much the only thing the tablet will be used for is to display pictures when I'm traveling so I don't have to carry a portfolio with me.

Yeah, I'm really torn between the ipad 3 and the a700. Both have little things I want/need. Can the ipad connect to a usb drive? Or would that require a special connector? With the A700, I can just shoot jpeg+nef, plug the usb cable I to my card reader and import the photos without needing a pc. Is the ipad capable of that? I'd assume so, but I'd like a definite answer.

you really weren't correcting anything actually, i said apple in general, I wasn't specifically pointing out the ipad in my statement, but if you look at the last time they did a teardown of parts&labor costs, Apple still made more money for the device VS other non-apple products (IIRC theres a good GS3 vs iPhone one around here somewhere as a good example), but again, I was making a general statement, and you inserted the ipad into it yourself, so ill ask the same thing the other guy did: put the flamethrower down :fingers-crossed:
OP: It looks like your leaning towards the A700 or the ipad3, in which case, can I ask what caused you to remove the Transformer Infinity from the running?

The Transformer is reported to be $600+,if I'm going to spend that, I'd just get the ipad. The A700 is $150 cheaper, for the same thing, minus the over clocked tegra3. No point in spending more money on a faster processor just to display pictures and occasionally use it for recreation.

True true, I guess I tend less to focus on reported costs and more on the cost when it happens.
On that note, when the Galaxy Note 2 and Transformer Infinity hit, I will be selling every device I have and saving up all I can in order to get them, 1920x1200 is my... "techno boner" resolution (term coined by old co-workers at my attention to detail when working and the parts salvageable from systems for re-sale).

I bought the tf700 about 2 weeks ago from best buy using the 50$ coupon that best buy messed up on. I actually bought it for 419 w/ tax going up to 450 which also includes the dock. Is this a good price for this? Well I have 2 weeks left for a full refund and I'm still debating if I should get a refund and wait for tegra 4 tablets or just keep it. There is slight flex on the screen which makes a clicking noise when I press on it but it doesn't really bother me. At first I was looking into ultrabooks but I gave tablet a try. Besides it's hard to find i5 ultrabooks for under 500. Help me decide!!

That is a good price IMO.
I'd say this is a factor of your budget and how much you use your tablet. I got the first Android tablet, a Motorola Xoom, on launch day. I had it for a few months and used it a lot then decided to sell it prematurely in order to wait for the next best thing which in my eyes was an HD screen. Well I ended up having to wait almost a year before I got my next tablet, a TF700. That entire year I was kicking myself for not holding on to the Xoom until I actually had another tablet in my possession.
So I guess you have to ask yourself how important to you is having a tablet? At that price I'm guessing you could probably sell it for a ~$100 loss a few months down the road. Who knows though the next generation of tablets might take longer to come out, like the delay we had on the 1080P tablets. With that in mind, if I were you, I'd keep it!
$450.00 for tab and dock?
I'd say that's a good deal.
If the click bugs you trade that in for one that doesn't click.
Just picked up a TF700 myself and I was literally asking myself the same question. I've got a little less than 60 days to return this to BBY if another tab is announced for release soon.
I guess, there are a few things to consider.
1) Is the better performance/battery life of the new device going to be significant? If they jack up the resolution like the N10, it will probably be closer to par with the TF700.
2) Will a new tablet have any hardware issues (e.g. TF-Prime GPS & Wifi problems)? The TF700 is a mature product and it's limitations are well outlined. If you buy a TF700 now, you know exactly what you are going to get.
3) What new features will be on this Tab, and are they worth waiting for? TF700 has SDXC, mini HDMI, a dock with full USB, Full HD, etc. It's a good feature set. TF700 is a bit low on ram with only 1GB, I'd rather have 2GB. It's missing an integrated LTE modem that is said to be in T4, but TBH, I would always buy the wifi version anyway. Better battery life, I wouldn't pay for the extra data plan, and my phone is now tethering fine (thanks TrevE). N10 like resolution looks impressive on paper, but not so in person. I have good eyesight, and the difference isn't noticeable. It's an advertising point over the ipad. Google needs to stop chasing Apple and build more hardware features into their tablets that Apple didn't already do a year ago, but I digress.
4) Are there any applications you cannot run on the TF700 that a new tab would fix? I picked u the TF700 because my Touchpad (running CM9) keeps crashing skype; which I use daily. I run a somewhat recent nightly, and since the Camera fix (thanks for that Dorregaray) being able to use skype at all is awesome. However, having to reboot the tablet 6 times in a night and constantly mucking up the conversation is real pain. Since using the TF700, I haven't had one hiccup in skype. That is worth a lot to me, but a newer tab won't make it better.
Anyway, those are the things I've been mulling over. I will need to see what the new Transformer will look like before I make any kind of decision.
Edit: FWIW, I paid $468 for the tab & a 32GB micro sdxc card. I think you got the better deal.
Have they given a release date for any Tegra4 device? I thought one was shown at the last electronics show but it was still a development model and didn't mention anything about release times or price. You could be waiting awhile and in meantime if you keep the TF700 start stashing away some money monthly for the next wave of tablets. That could help on any loss you take or cover the difference to a model with more storage.
----------
1 - I don't think anyone can tell what the performance and battery life will be like right now. New devices and cpu's are marketed as more performance while reducing energy needs but the tech community needs products to test before accepting what is said as fact. Are Tegra4 chps supposed to run at the same power that today's Tegra3 chips do but have the better performance? That is a performance improvement while reducing the power needed if they were to make a Tegra3 to equal that performance. Someone may have a better answer regarding power saving but remember a bumped up screen size will probably draw more power anyway.
2 - Again probably hard to answer. Until the product hits the market we really won't know how it performs and what problems it may or may not have. It is a risk you take by buying the next and greatest device. Prime was the next and greatest device and we know how that turned out. We can only hope they get the message after 3 devices that they need better I/O components.
4 - As far as applications I think many people have issue with games that are released or already out and "not supported" by our device. It will take some time once a new device comes out for companies to tweak the code or whatever they do to have the games run on the device. That is done on their whim. Why some haven't not done now on the TF700 (Gameloft and EA) is a question I don't think anyone truly knows. Some guess it's screen resolution and they don't want to change the code to render the graphics properly for our device.
But really you can wait and wait and still not be satisfied because something else is a few months away. This technology is moving fast.

Well, I had really wanted a "Wayne" (Tegra 4) device, and was waiting for that to launch to replace/augment the touchpad. The marketing slides showing kepler tech integrated into the SoC is actually a little bit exicting to me. However, I took advantage of a time limited offer to get the TFI at a reduced price. I use google docs for invoicing clients, and the Touchpad wasn't handling that well enough for me to do it on site. I found myself just waiting to get home to do it & emailing an invoice back. The TFI with the keyboard dock provides an excellent solution, and I had considered getting an ultra book for this purpose, but at about half the price of the ultrabook I was looking at, while fulfilling essentially the same purpose, having the same size profile, and better battery life, well it seemed like the better bargain.
That said, if I could get my hands on a next gen transformer within the next 60 days, I'd likely trade this in, in a heart beat.
My opinion the TF700T is viable for a while longer.
Glad the FHD tabs didn't shoot of into a numbers game as quick as I thought they would.
All I can say is after the "lobotomy" lol...my tablet has been a satisfying adventure.
It's smooth no jitters, games well (light gaming), plays my Xfinity downloads without a hitch, wifi connects stays connected, gps is quick,
browser is hanging in there...etc.
Just for a bit of comparison:
I've side by sided the tablet with my 2 year old HP AMD A6 notebook, and for what it is the tab has about the same amount of annoyance that a Win7 notebook has.
Not comparing Windows to Android just noting all devices big and small can of course suffer glitchiness.
Once the system settles in and with a little restraint as far as collecting\installing poorly written apps the Infinity remains a buy at least for me.
Hopefully when the newer tabs start popping perhaps some of us hold-outs will benefit from a much better selection of HD tablet applications.

How did you get the 60 day refund period? On my best buy receipt it states 30 days hassle free returns. Also it's a little weird that my tf700 freezes and randomly reboots. It doesn't do it frequently but once in awhile it does that.....very weird. This is actually my second tablet because the first one had slight flex but the current one actually makes a small clicking noise too. Honestly it doens't really bother me but ASus def needs to work on their quality control
Personally, waiting for the next tablet from ASUS (I assume you want a Transformer tablet) will be a very painful experience. Our tf700 was announced at CES 2012 (in January 2012), but only became available for sale at least 4 months later (depend on your location). Given the fact that ASUS has not announced any successor to our Infinity yet, I am inclined to believe if there is a Tegra 4 tablet from ASUS, it will only be available to us on the second half of the year. I have been waiting for the Transformer Book for many months but it is still not available. To me, waiting for something that is not even announced yet is a waste of time and effort.
I would strongly reccomend this tab to anyone who needs something with similar functionality to a netbook or ultrabook but I am looking forward to see what will come next. I would love to see something with a little more power hit the same nitch and with about the same price point... I'm actually waiting on the razer edge tablet to see what it turns into. anyways, I plan on hanging on to my TF700 even if I do get an ultrabook or the edge.

Premier Silver. Drop enough cash at best buy and you get side benefits, like a doubled return period. Most of the the other benefits are less useful. I don't bother with the complimentary Geek Squad services, for example. Even if I wanted or needed their services (I don't), I still wouldn't use it. Mostly, that's just an opportunity for them to come into your home and look for things they can sell you.
Honestly. ...maybe a extra gig of ram would make this tablet perfect for me. The resolution is ideal for me and the speed is great (running CleanRom) and it does what I hope to get from it. And I use my note 2 for the extra stuff (multi window, nfc sharing etc). And to top that, the mobile giants still have not made 100% use of the quad core as it is and until then, asus infinity is a keeper.

Tegra 4 isn't shipping until QTR 3 2013. Given that time frame, I'm reasonably happy with my purchase. If the SoC isn't even shipping until then, you won't see devices until QTR 4, and that's nearly a year away. No doubt there will be better performers from Qualcomm sooner than that, but even so, I'm happy with the device I have for now.
searched but haven't even found rumors on a successor - had the TFPrime before and since it got nicked I am waiting for sth new to play with.
Have started considering the Samsung Tab Plus (whenever announced) given the higher res. Still seems that the TF700 has enough muscles and the add keyboard (+battery) is clearly a plus...
Anyhow - have there been any news on the TF700 successor that I missed
Its becomming a bit rusty given the time its already in the market

I have to agree about the extra gig of ram. But in response to the OP's question, yes that is a very good price. You could always dualboot it with rabbits' linux so as to gain some of the functionality that you would get with an ultrabook. The infinity will not become redundant for a while yet in my opinion so I say go for it.
For tablet with awesome dock integration the tf700 cant be beat. You also got a great deal on both. As far at Tegra 4 devices in particular Asus ones, no one knows yet when they will actually release one so you will have to play the waiting game. Vizio is the only one I know of that is coming out with one but not sold in the U.S. and doesn't have a keyboard dock option.
As someone mentioned the tf700 is a good laptop or netbook replacement. So if you're not going to play high graphic games on it like gameloft games then its a good tablet. But I do recommend you unlock and install custom rom on it as it lags quite a bit in stock form.

The price is good, considering you got the dock with it.

Unless the device has a battery-powered dock, I'd suspect battery life is going to be on par at best -- expect it to be worse. This may not apply if the new device carries one of those funky new battery design which last for a week and are charged in 10 minutes, but those will only get on the market in about two years, they reckon.

Obviously true, and very significant remark. Any device will have its issues, and given the fact that the TF201 suffered from some of these as well, I'd not expect the next Transformer to be faultless either. :S

And the N10 has both QA and availability issues, for example.
Following your digression for a bit: Apple had already lost the innovation game in the tablet and smartphone worlds a few years ago. All they have done is increase screen size, and (sometimes) resolution.

If anything, the older device will probably support more apps altogether -- if you have experienced the transitions from Froyo to Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich to Jelly Bean, you have noticed that we lost a lot of apps along the way that were pretty good in themselves, but just weren't given the TLC to update them to function on the new version. Backward compatibility is less of an issue when the programmer takes it into account when developing his/her app, but too often an app is just hacked together and subsequently, essentially, abandoned.
