[Q] IPV4 and IPV6 options in APN Editior (in 2.3.4 update) - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I observed in 2.3.4 that while creating an APN (Settings->Wireless & network settings->Mobile networks->Access Point Names), there is option to select IPV4 or IPV6.
Can someone please let me know what change does this make?

Check out ipv4 and ipv6 on wikipedia.
You are safe to just leave that on ipv4.

With ICS, the Nexus S can now do IPv6 on T-Mobile USA. You can Google for details on the T-Mobile USA IPv6 Beta

Questions about APN Settings

I've searched all over this site and google to find out more about APN's. Can't find a good resource for the info I was curious about. Most of it was incomplete or just confusing. Hopefully someone here knows the answers.
Does what you name the APN matter? Are the codes case sensitive? What do these different codes stand for? Exactly what is their individual purpose? What does it mean when used together? Do some codes work better with others? Are there some that shouldn't be used, or are out dated? Does it matter the order in which the APN types are listed in settings? Are there more codes?
Thanks for your help!!!

[Q] OpenVPN on TMobile LTE

I can't get OpenVPN client to work on my Nexus 5 when on Tmobile's LTE connection. Works just fine when on WiFi, but when on LTE it just sits waiting for server. My Nexus 4 on the other hand is working just fine on both WiFi and TMO LTE (it's rooted with LTE enabled). Anyone else has this problem?
Thanks in advance.
If anyone cares, I figured out what's the cause of it. By default Tmo LTE uses IPv6 and OpenVPN has a problem with it (or my vpn server). Changing to IPv4 solves the problem.

go to the APN settings (Settings-> More-> Mobile Networks-> Access Points NAmes -> click on the entry that is selected (should be the T-mobile GPRS fast.t-mobile.com)
scroll down, change APN protocl to ipv4
then save
Why would you need a VPN for on cellular can it bypass the throttle?

Thanks a bunch, that does indeed fix the problem with OpenVPN running on DD-WRT.
@markdapimp Security, all of your traffic will be encrypted and originate from your VPN's network

Yes but can you trust your VPN provider and even then if you trust them do you trust your VPN Providers Datacenter and if you trust your VPN provider's data center can you trust their network connections.

Setting up VPN

Hi. I have an AT&T G3 but Im using a tmobile sim. I want to change the APN protocol to IPv4, however, in the APN settings, there is no option for APN protocol. Is this feature not present in the AT&T firmware? Im running stock Kitkat. Thanks
To clarify, VPNs do not with with IPv6 on tmobile - apparently switching to IPv4 is a solution to this problem

Nex S hotspot feature?

Anyone having issues with the hotspot feature where it will turn on but when any devices connect to it will not have access to Internet. I've tried setting it both wide open and passwords and nothing. I've even tried different sims (TMobile and ATT) all apn setting seem to be correct as well. I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue?
Update: Thanks to Saloei for the find!
1. Settings\Mobile Network\Carrier\Automatic Registration to disabled - reboot (takes a minute to find carriers)
2. Settings\Mobile Network\Access Point Name (APN)
Create new APN with the following settings:
Name - T-Mobile US LTE
APN - fast.t-mobile.com
Proxy - Not set
Port - not set
Username - Not set
Password - Not set
Server - Not set
MMSC -http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS Proxy - Not set
MMS Port - Not set
MCC - 310
MNC - 260
Authentication Type - Not set
APN Type - default,mms,ims*
APN Protocol - IPv4/IPv6
APN Roaming Protocol IPv4
APN - ENABLE
Bearer - Unspecified*
MVNO Type - None
MVNO Value - not set
3. Select new APN by taping the empty space on the far right of the newly made APN (screenshot)
That should be it, thanks again to Saloei.

I'm having the same problem you have. I also tried it no passwords needed and still no Internet! I tried it with a tablet and a cell phone.

T-Mobile. I used mobile hotspot many times in the past with my previous phone. I think I'll call them up just to be sure tethering is still active on my account.
Check the apn settings.
Sometimes automatic apn setups add a proxy ip, and that could cause an issue.

Doesn't look like any proxy are set.
Ok guys, my entire page response to this problem was just deleted so I'm re-posting. I was able to get Hot-Spot working with the help of my T-Mobile Tech. I wasn't able to create and then select a new APN so I disabled Settings\Mobile Network\Carrier\Automatic Registration to disabled - reboot. It took a while to disable but it happened! I was able to create and select a new APN with the following settings according to the T-Mobile tech. I'm located in the eastern USA
NEW APN settings:
Name - T-Mobile US LTE
APN - fast.t-mobile.com
Proxy - Not set
Port - not set

I tried but for some reason I'm unable to select the new apn I created using your info posted
I had the same problem. I kept trying and was able to select. I had to touch all the way to the far right of my new APN. Don't know if that was the solution but just keep trying near the edge to right of your new one.

Reboot! Then let us know if Hot-Spot worked.

Nice! NP
Wow! Just spent half hour on the phone. The tech from Philippines raved about this phone but couldn't get hotspot to work. He made me create the new APN but did not make me perform the first step (disabling auto registration of the networ). Also, He asked me to choose IPv6 and not either. Worked a charm, thank you so much!

APN protocol: Hi. Sorry in advance if this has been noted already.

I'm on android 11 beta 4 and really can't figure out how to change the APN protocol from ipv6 to ipv4. I wanted to do this to try to get a stupid preamp/streamer to work but their app for setting up the preamp seems to only work with ipv4, only I don't know how to change this on this version of android. Thanks if you know - or even if you don't ;-)
Go to settings>Wifi&network>Sim & network settings> select your active data sim> access point names> Click in your apn (name, not the check box) go to apn protocol(bottom) and select ipv4
Save changes and done
