Iphone like EMail app? - HTC Inspire 4G

Is there an email app like the iphone? Also is there I way to put pictures on your lock screen?

That depends on what application you're looking for, but I have understood that you bring your htc Rom has an application that lets you do what you're looking for. Anyway MailDroid is very good. Ask me for more help...
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G

I prefer maildroid. It is pretty similar to the mail app on the iphone.

This post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12941969&postcount=3700) will walk you through putting a custom image on your lock screen (if you're using Sense 2.1 lockscreen). I've done it multiple times with success. If you figure out a way to do it using the Sense 3.0 lockscreen let me know

What features are you looking for from the iphone Mail.app? If it's the unified Inbox, K-9 Mail is pretty good.

MIUI Rom has different lockscreen pic then wallpaper. actually entire rom is kinda iphone like.. but i use k-9 mail try it out

I tried MailDroid but I cant stand it that there are ads that HOG my data when not on WIFI. I tried K-9 but there it kept force closing and couldn't use pinch to zoom. Uninstalled both. And cannot afford the $18 to buy MailDroid.

Ads? Use adfree.

the simplest root for inspire is to
download AC_SWM and GingerBreak-v1.20.apk
install AC_SWM on your pc, connect your phone in usb debug mode, run AC_SWM, then point it to GingerBreak-v1.20.apk path and click install, then goto your phone and select GingerBreak-v1.20.apk select root, reboot and super user is installed, doing from memory but its on forums

Have you done this with your inspire? Or has anyone done this with their inspire?

For pictures on your lock screen, widgetlocker is one way to go.

I have an Ipad and an Iphone 3g, I put android on the 3g Iphone and that finally pushed me to buy an unlocked Inspire 4g.
As far as rooting, honestly the whole process was painless using the Ace method. You download a zip file and follow a simple list of instructions and boom, you have full access to your phone lickety split.
Whole process took me 20 minutes and I have crappy internet =0

You could use widget locker from the market to put a picture on your lockscreen, and it also comes with a lot of customizable unlock bars so it fits the rom you're using.

I'm kind of a n00b to rooting on Android, and I was pretty scared when I started looking at what would be involved. I think the best bet is to spend a good few hours just reading the forums and finding a method you are comfortable with. I made sure I was familiar with the tutorial's processes before I touched my phone. Start at the link below, I used the "one click" method (it's like 5 clicks, so what). Now I'm rooted and have probably flashed 20+ times. It's addictive.

[Q] Swype?

Hi all,
New to the Android scene. I have an iPhone3gs and am leaning towards the Inspire over the Atrix. Quick noob question. Can Swype be installed on this device?
Yes but
Unless you are rooted (which at least for now looks semi-difficult), you need to sideload it. I haven't had enough posts yet to post an outside link, but you can Google "install swype inspire" and the first hit should get you started.

@antioch216: Thanks. That was the link I wanted to post!
It's very easy. Didn't take me all that long either. I used the Mac/Linux method and it was easy breezy.
Thanks for the link. One other question. What are your thoughts on Swype vs the stock keyboard? I've never actually used it myself but have heard lots of hype surrounding it.
Thanks!
Swype is really awesome I think. It's really easy to get used to. In my experience you only have to use one finger and it's pretty forgiving in terms of the letters you hit.

Swype is much faster for me once I got used to it.... except when it's messing up. Sometimes the autocorrect is just so bad that it would be faster to send the message in morse code, but that doesn't happen often.

nope, no root required. I haven't rooted and I just followed the guide and now I've got Swype!
AT&T blocks the ability to download from other sources (sideloading) and so this program is essentially a work around, but doesn't disturb any original settings. So if anything happened to your phone, AT&T wouldn't know unless the employee knew about this stuff.
Just follow the guide, and you'll have Swype, it's pretty easy

I believe every time you reset, you just have to change the input mode. It's just a default setting that isn't changeable to my knowledge. It happens to everyone
On my captivate, using Swype, when I pressed in the text area, I got a little button to move the cursor around. I get the same type little button with the default keyboard on my Inspire. With Swype, though, I get just a cursor, and I have to press and hold to magnify, more like an iphone. Is there any way to change that?

Need step by step process for at&t branded inspire unlock process

Although Ill probably be flogged for this... here we go. I just bought an att inspire for me and my parents. Anyway seems significantly more difficult a process than past devices ive owned; tilt 2, tilt 1, etc...
Anyways just curious if someone could spell this out for me in detail specifically for an att branded inspire from start to finish?

I dont think its you guys on the forums responsibility to put this in clear terms but would appreciate if someone could lend a hand. Like a start to finish guide for someone who is completely new to this device and the android os...
Like, what to i need to back up, wtf is booting into recovery and how is this done??? You see what i mean? the key is:
after you root, when you restart hold volume down. that opened up a world of ROMS to me.
if I had not already rooted, I would write a step by step for you.
just watch the video.
also, back up your contacts and messages to something - google or mobilego or another program like titanium backup (pre-root) before you do anything. expect to reinstall apps. (amazon is great b/c it keeps track of what you install so you can do an easy reinstall)
hey guys I have a questions. I have my phone rooted using the Simple one Click method, so that that mean my Inspire is also unlocked, like if I put a different sim it would it work or not.
If you just bought the Inspire, you more than likely don't have anything on the phone yet that needs to be backed up other than contacts, which can easily be restored via HTC sync. Bubby's method will spoon-feed you through the entire process, as the tool will do all of the dirty work for you, including the making of your Gold Card. The hack kit is just a little more hands-on, but is just as easy to use. Read through the instructions for both methods, look at the FAQs, and take a look at the threads for each method. You'll see that almost every problem that was run into was solved just by going to the FAQs or by following a quick link from the thread. If terminology is intimidating you, the Devs always do a great job of explaining steps/procedures in layman's terms. The Inspire is a challenge to root because of the necessary ROM-downgrade so that the phone can become exploitable, but take your time with the procedure and you'll get it knocked out on no time. Good luck.

As someone who has just rooted and I am a noob on Android phones. just take your time and read up on the rooting process before you start. It does look intimidating at first, but if you can follow instructions, its really not that hard. The above methods is what I used and good luck.
The point is that it's a little bit of a leap of faith... you have to follow the steps as you go not knowing what the instruction itself is gonna do the most of the time... the language is indeed intimidating but let's face it... if they say 'boot in recovery mode pressing the power button while you hold volume down' you don't need an explanation of what recovery mode means.... you just press the buttons in the order.. eventually u will understand the rest...

Instead of just clicking the link, try right clicking the link and select 'open in new tab'. Theres been several links and downloads that have done that to me too and the opening in new tab seems to work.
Edit: Its working for me here at work (WinXP machine) but home machine (Win7) it will do that also, pop up a blank window and even have the security bar at the top and nothing happens after approving security. But if I open in new tab instead, works every time

Hack Kit vs One Click

Except for the black cwm screen but there is a fix for it if you go two or three pages back I have a thread posted
Sent from skynet using XDA Premium Resistance App
The hack kit IMO is easy enough it's worth doing it that way over the "one click" method.
The CWM black screen is due to something not going right with the Super One Click...even with a fix for it wouldn't you sleep better knowing it was done right from the start?
I used Simple One Click and never had the cwm black screen. Not everybody has that issue.
what blank screen issue? you're scaring me
I hope this doesn't become another versus thread, we've already been down this road. They're both great but both require paying attention and common sense. Read, research and be merry.
Sent from Desire HD or Inspire 4G or whatever this thing is called via premium XDA app.
Ummm, the One Click fixes the black screen too - click Fixes and it will enable full S-OFF by flashing the engineering bootloader.
I personally used the One-Click method. I also got the black screen for CWM.
I have read the tutorials for both. BOTH methods are very solid. And BOTH methods work.
What it boils down to is this: Can YOU follow instructions? If you can, you will be fine, using either method. the One-click specifically states that some users WILL experience a black screen issue. AND it tells you how to fix it, which is built right into the program.
In conclusion: Pick one. Read the instructions completely. Then download EVERYTHING you will need. Then test your ADB is working properly. Then read the tutorial again. Then start.
I found the one-click method to be pretty easy and did not get the black screen. Tribalartgod is right, though: be sure to read over all the directions for whichever method you choose, and get everything you need downloaded in advance. A user did a youtube video for the one-click which I also found helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0sQFoS_m_8

One Click is faster and easier as long as you can follow instructions. Example, if you forget to put it back on Charge Only mode, you have to start the whole process over again. Also when you get to rage, the terminal app doesn't always restart itself so you have to exit the app after it forks the childs and then continue from there.
I personally think that it was faster using the One Click but I'm also adept at following instructions - it took me about 25-30 minutes total to get totally rooted, radio S-OFF and ENG S-OFF. Its certainly a LOT faster to make the goldcard with the One Click.
i pretty much used both..i used the 'one click'..but i got the black screen..so i had to follow the other set of instructions to fix..which was part of the instructions for the 'hack kit'..after that i did eng s-off..very simple tool..

This means don't buy any AT&T branded device. Hopefully sideloading happens with the Inspire. With hsupa now enabled and with this, I would lose more reason to root. Although getting rid of the bloat would be nice. I just wish we could root stock without having to downgrade.

try using titanium back up, that helps out alot, if u really don't wanna waste the 15min it takes to reset up ur phone, or just root it b4 setting it up, right after you buy it. sure, some rom updates will require a full wipe but its always for the better, there's just too many benefits to rooting not to want to do it. removing bloatware, ability to sideload, tethering, being able to run any of the many roms out there and the list goes on and on and on.

+1. If you're on AT&T, and have an Android phone, you are going to be missing out on all your phone could be. Even if you hack the living daylights out of a stock ROM, it won't compare to any ROM floating around here. It's not nearly as hard/bad as people think.

I sideload right on my Inspire. I have the apks on my card and choose them with any file explorer and install them. I can even install apps that require root to function. Those particular apps will install, but they won't work without root. But all apps that don't require root to function install and work just fine.
It figures... right after rooting. I like root though. I'm a control freak and I like to determine what is on my phone. Deleted all of ATTs bloarware and just darn well like playing with ROMS. I was a Linux distro sampler too for a while before settling on Fedora.

Use bubbys method, should be easier, the video is out of date but you can use it to go along with, if instructions in the video are different than the instructions in the command promt then just do what the command promt says, their not that different. just watch the video a few times before you do it. and dont get in a rush.
Neither ways say they are outdated. The videos might. The dates on the post just mean that was the last time they were updated. If they aren't updated that means that they haven't found any better way of doing it.

This. I did this yesterday, watched the video, ran the program while watching the video with it and I got root, s-off, and everything just fine, all the instructions were the same as the video. Running CM7 Stable now and after some modifications I couldn't be happier. Good luck with your rooting, just follow the instructions exactly and you'll be fine.
Thanks guys! This is the gf's phone and she wants wifi tether so she can use my iPad to watch Desperate Housewives while she's traveling, lol.
She loves Sense and the stock ROM but wants to ditch the bloat. I'm thinking one of the new gingerbread sense roms would do nicely.
How long did this take you guys?

maybe 20 mins?; after I watched the video 3 or 4 times. loading the roms takes the most time. you dont have to root to get free tether, there is a guide in the dev section somewhere.

It took me a bit longer then I expected cause i had some minor problems. But the general time is round 30 min. Took me about an hour.
It too me about 45 minutes total to do everything. But just FYI, if you only want to root for tethering you can get tethering for free on unrooted stock by setting your own VPN settings, search the forums and you'll be able to find a guide easily.
