[Q] Possible to play avi videos? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to play .avi videos on Transformer? I have tried to play videos on MicroSD but have been unsuccessful.

Try using rockplayer?

Moboplayer, free from the Market, does a nice job.

Rockplayer seems to work, thanks!

AVI, the container, is fine and Android should have no trouble with. But, there's also the codecs that the video data is encoded in, as well as the codecs for the audio data.
Those may or may not be supported, especially if they're older files using some ancient and crappy codec.
Edit: Bah, OP responded as I was writing this

I know this is an old thread but hopefully someone can still be patient and help me out.
I just recently got the TF101. I think it's the plan TF101, not the "G" version. I got it through a Groupon deal so it didn't have a lot of technical details.
I'm brand new to Android and I want to watch AVI files on the Transformer using a microSD card. I've downloaded a bunch of the usual suspects (MoboPlayer, BSPlayer, Rockpayer, VPlayer) and so far I like MX Player and Dice Player the best.
Here's the problem:
I've formatted the microSD on my iMac as FAT32 and added tv show folders. **Only SOME of the avi files play without any "read" errors** I know avi's can have all sorts of codecs but for my collection of Friends tv show I personally ripped all the episodes from a dvd set using Handbrake and used the same setting for all the videos. So why are some working flawlessly and other videos can't play at all?
Is there something that I'm missing that I need to do to make all my avi's compatible? Do I need to download something else aside from the ARM codecs req by each app? Is it because I'm using a non-brand microSD?
All help is appreciated... Thanks!

Folder with videos?

Can I make a folder on the XOOM with the videos in it? I want my son to be able to navigate to it without any problems.
Also what's the best video player out on the market? I tried VPlayer but its slightly sluggish playing avi files. I put an MPEG4 video and it plays awesome in the default video player.
Thanks.

Also wondering how to create the video folder for my 4 year old
Anyone? Or any other solution like a network drive that allows us to play videos.

Read up on CifsManager, works very well but requires root.
I just used the Movies folder that is already on the Xoom and it works great for me. Default player sees it no problem. i Use Handbrake to encode all my videos so they all play fine. Even when using the HDMI to my TV.

[Q] can i play .avi files on my xoom

I use this one as well.
I'm doing the same thing with Fringe . I have some episodes that were recorded in HD (each episode was around 350-400MB) and they looked beautiful on the Xoom. I was also able to play MKV files using Rock Player, but it was pretty laggy. I think that may have to do with them being close to 2gb files though.
vplayer also seems to work well
and also I am now using Plex to stream them from the laptop (acting as a media server) to the xoom without having the files on the xoom
Hi all,
Interesting reading as for some reason RockPlayer wouldn't work on my Xoom much to my horror but i am now using VPlayer instead and so far it hasn't let me down or diaspointed me with its performance. Using Opera Mobile i am actually downloading my new US Tv shows straight to my Xoom and then either watching them on it or using the micro HDMI to HDMI to output it to my monitor that is also hooked up to my JBL speakers and powered subwoofer and the results are nothing short of stunning IMO. I have only had my Xoom for a little over a week and am really happy with my purchase but of course looking forward to the upgrades it will get.

Vplayer and Moboplayer both work great

Glad it's working out for you - i only had issues with mkv's with vplayer that were juttering and stuff but was advised to try Plex streaming them afterwards as they may work
Out of interest - any good US TV shows we should be watching out for? I'm finding most shows I was interested in are being cancelled and have nothing to replace them...
What kind of shows do you like? I watch mostly TNT, USA Network, FX (mostly cool crime/spy dramas), Science, History and History International Channels.

i think if u have xoom, u can transfer your avi files to it for tring. from user manual of xoom, we know xoom supports H.264, H.263, MPEG-4, MP3, AAC, ACC+ Enhanced, OGG, MIDI, AMR NB, AAC+.
it can't support avi file. u can download a player or use a converter to convert avi files to xoom compatible formats. good luck!

xoom don't support avi format. some player can play avi videos such as qqplayer. another way you can use a video converter to convert avi to xoom playable formats such as H.264(mp4), H.263, MPEG-4, etc.

Ask about Movie Player!!!

Hello.
I have very important question.
I'm looking for movie player for my Asus Transformer, which will play video in various format and what is very important with subtitles.
This aplication can be pay(money is not important). I don't know how to use android market, becouse most of aplications are for phones, so it doesn't look good on my tablet.
So please HELP ME!!! Tomorrow Ii'm begining trip and I want have it.
Thank you
Get mobo player from the market, it's free, fast and plays almost anything. You don't even have to use the app itself, just use a file manager to pick your films and it should automatically start through mobo player.

I have Mobo Player, it's ok, but it does't read subtitles

Can it(subtitles) be in .txt ?
It does not do subs in MKV as .ass I don't think. Anyhow playback is poor on a lot of the movies I have tried (Mostly high profile MKV x264 files). I am still waiting for a solution to this as I watch a lot of anime and do not want to reencode.

Watching latest Bleach ep 329 of filler arc at 720p and it looks pretty good and has subs with mvideoplayer.
I'd recommend vPlayer. Every file I've thrown to Mobo, mVideo and vPlayer, vPlayer has managed to play the most files on my TF.
vplayer and mobo are the two top players to pick... even though i have both, usually mobo will play everything anyways
i got the problem with Vplayer (paid version). the sound comes after the vdo. what should i do?
Looks like MoboPlayer is the best one currently. AFAIK, none of them support ASS, ordered chapters or FLAC (MoboPlayer supports it but it appears to be buggy) in MKV. The one MP4 I had did handle ASS fine though, so you might be better off just reencoding things (just changing the container probably won't take too long).
Video format
Just got my TF with docking keyboard and I've come across something strange over the weekend.
I've connected an external 500gb with my movies in .avi format. When I use mobo player, I can watch them, but when I copy/paste a movie from the external drive to my mounted SD card, mobo player can't open the file on my sd card.
Any suggestions?
I don't want to carry the external drive with me and I thought I could just copy the file to my mounted 32gb card and play it later.
I''ve used Rock Player on my dinc and it plays about everything and supports subtitles. Haven't used it in awhile though. You can try the "lite" ad version for free.
Vitalplayer plays everything I need it to vplayer is my favorite but lagged on my phone so I switched to vitalplayer on both and it works great

How about a movie stored on SD card....
Has anyone tried playing an .avi file from their external sd card?

I have not tried .avi files on a sd card. But I have tried mp4's on a class 4 16 gig card. The files did not play back as well as the internal memory. I re-encoded some mkv's using the handbrake settings I found in this forum. But I think that might also be a result of my card class. I will have to try on a faster card to see if that helps.

What to expect from TF700 stock video player?

Chances are most of the 720P video files comes with A52 Audio track.
Surprise !
It will not play as is, using the stock video player.
where do you have the video stored? memory card or device? i had a few movies stored on my 64gb card, and when i tried to play them, with any video player, i got that message. so i transferred the same movies to a usb thumb drive, plugged it into the keyboard, and they played fine. im not sure what the issue is. but i do have some movies, that were converted specifically for my xoom, that play just fine from the memory card.
From my playing the stock video player is crap. I've had no real success playing anything unless I specifically reencode for it. Even stuff that worked on the OG transformer stock player fails on this one. That said, BS player works quite well as long as you are playing the videos locally.
I've had very little luck streaming from UPNP server in my house due to poor wifi streaming rate.
The BS player is by far the best.

MXVideo Player played the movie with no issues.

P5113 doesn't want to play some videos

Hi everyone. Recently I bought a new GT P5113. In all the tablet reviews they say that it can play easily almost all AVI, MKV, MP4 etc video files, but when I try to play them with the stock video player I get a message that video is not supported. I dont think that this is normal.
My tab is running the latest firmware update from Samsung ULGB2 4.0.4 or sth like that. Any ideas, except installing 3rd party players? Somebody else with the same problem?
Thanks!
what files exactly wont play and are they stored locally?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bsplayer.bspandroid.free&hl=en
try bsplayer, it should hardware playback files with a HW onscreen to let you know.
It plays all my upnp hosted video files just fine, i had some issues with streamed files with the stock player. assuming my p3110 uses the same decoding process.
Thanks for the info. It wont play divx and xvid avi files, also it doesnt want to play mkv and mp4, which is completely strange. The files are stored on the externsl microsd. I wonder if i need to make a hard reset...
Edit: BSplayer plays videos only in SW mode
