help with rooting mytouch 4G - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

i have the root files on my sd card
i have visionary r11 and r14
i have terminal emulator
these are the steps i used
open visionary, check "Set system r/w after root" on
run temproot
open terminal and entered
su - got super user
cd / sdcard/root
sh root.sh
wait til its done and tells me to turn off phone.
holding volume down+power to get into the hboot.. it still says s-on... ive done this many times... still not working..
i dont have root manager, so it seems i cant use the other methods like gfree
anyone knows/sees what im doing wrong?

Here are the steps I used (MyTouch 4g with bootloader version 0.86.0000)
1. Turn USB Debugging mode ON, turn Fastboot OFF (settings-> applications -> development)
2. Install & open Visionary r14, check "set system r/w"
3. Click "temproot now", wait for it to do its thing.
4. Make sure the temproot was successful (download root explorer or something that requires root privileges and make sure it pops up saying "such and such was granted superuser permission")
5. Get Android SDK for your PC, install all the add-ons.
6. Connect phone to PC, making sure debugging mode is still enabled (you don't have to switch it to Disk Drive mode, just connect)
7. Allow ALL drivers to install (in Windows, it'll pop up saying "Device is ready to use" when it's done)
8. Get gfree, put it in the root directory of your phone's SD card (switch Disk Drive mode on temporarily for this, obviously).
9. On your PC, navigate to the folder where Android SDK is (in Windows, it's C:/Program Files/Android/android-sdk)
10. Hold down Shift, right-click the folder called "platform-tools", click "Open command window here"
11. In command window, type "adb devices" to make sure everything's working fine so far. If so, you'll see your device listed.
12. Still in the command window, type "adb push gfree /data/local"
13. Back on the phone, install terminal emulator
14. In terminal emulator, type "su" and hit enter
15. After it says "Terminal Emulator has been granted superuser permissions", type the following: "cd /data/local" and hit enter
16. Type "chmod 777 gfree" and hit enter
17. Type "./gfree -f" and hit enter - It'll runs something and immediately reboot here. Now you can check your hboot and you should have S-Off
18. Once the phone boots back up, run Visionary again to get temproot.
19. Now that you have root privileges, run Visionary yet again, but click "Attempt Permroot Now"
20. Let Visionary do its thing and you should be permrooted with S-Off!

AWESOME thanx..
i did this and the first time it worked.. i avoided this before coz it took soo long to download all the drivers... i just let it download overnight..
now have perma root and the engineering bootloader.. haha...

Root Files
what root files did you use and where did you get them?? sorry im really new to the phone modding

New clarified method for rooting the HTC Aria (for those who are having trouble)

Credit goes to eugene373 and attn1. These are mostly their instructions, but I did change, clarify, and add a few steps. If you can't get any of the other methods working, try this one.
Prerequisites...
Note: If you're in Linux, you only need to do Step 4, Step 6, and Step 7.
Step 0.
Download and install HTC Sync: http://www.htc.com/us/support/aria-att/downloads/
Step 1.
Download and unzip the Android SDK: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Step 2.
Go into the folder where you unzipped the Android SDK and open "SDK Setup.exe".
If you aren't greeted with a failed to fetch URL error, proceed to Step 3. If you did receive this error, go to Settings in the "Choose Packages to Install" window and check "Force https;//... sources to be fetched using http://..."
Close and re-open "SDK Setup.exe".
Step 3.
When the "Choose Packages to Install" window pops up, make sure the package "Usb Driver package, revision x" is checked. You can uncheck everything else. Click Install. After it downloads and installs, close "Android SDK and AVD Manager".
Step 4.
With your device unplugged from your computer, go to Settings > Application > Development on your device and turn on USB Debugging.
Step 5.
Now plug your device in to your computer. This is just to make sure the USB drivers are installed.
Once they are installed, unplug your device and turn it off.
Step 6.
This step is optional, but it may prevent an error later on in the process. If you've never formatted your SD card from a computer, remove it from the phone and format it in Windows or OSX with an external card reader. Then place the formatted card back in your phone, but leave the phone off.
Step 7.
Download the updated Root.zip from eugene373's guide: Root the Slide & Other HTC Devices*6/15/2010* How-To Updated 6/29/2010
Now let's get started...
Step 0.
Unzip Root.zip
Step 1.
Place the contents ("update.zip", "ota.zip", and "loop") into the Android SDK tools folder.
Step 2.
Open Command Prompt or Terminal and CD to the SDK tools directory.
Step 3.
Power on your device into the bootloader by holding the "Volume Down" key and simultaneously pressing Power.
Once you're in the bootloader, wait about 30 seconds until some diagnostic checking is done.
Press "Volume Down" to highlight Recovery, but do not push Power to execute just yet.
Step 4.
Now run your loop file from the prompt (either type "loop" in Windows or "./loop.sh" in Linux) (refer to ice3186's post for Mac instructions)
Note: The loop does nothing but show you the connection status of your phone. It's not technically required, but we'll use it in this guide.
Step 5.
Once the loop is running in your prompt, get ready to connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable, but don't connect one end quite yet. With Recovery still highlighted on your phone, you will need to push the Power button and then immediately plug in the other end of the USB cord.
Step 6.
After a few seconds, you should see your device listed in the loop.
Step 7.
Unplug the USB cable from the bottom of your phone and plug it back in. You probably don't need to do this, but let's be safe. Wait for your device to show up in the loop again. Hit CTRL-C to terminate the loop.
Step 8.
You should see a triangle/exclaimation over a phone graphic.
Hold the "Volume Up" key (note it's Volume UP this time) and simultaneously press Power.
After the menu comes up, use the volume and power buttons to select and run update.zip. (This will fail, but we already know that! Select it anyway.)
Step 9.
Paste the following command into your prompt and press Enter.
adb push ota.zip /sdcard/update.zip (*OSX users add a ./ in front of all terminal commands please)
Step 10.
This is very important!! Have this next command ready in your prompt before running update.zip again!!
This is the command. Paste it into your prompt, but DO NOT press Enter yet.
adb push update.zip /sdcard
Step 11.
Run update.zip and as soon as you see a faint progress bar appear behind the text at the bottom of the screen, push Enter to execute the command in your prompt.
Step 12.
If successful, you should see Clockwork Recovery and you now have Su and Superuser.apk installed! You can now reboot your phone into the OS to verify. If unsuccessful, repeat steps 11 and 12.
Step 13.
This step is optional, but it will save you the pain of going through all of these steps again in the future.
Unrevoked team: Recovery reflash tool (updated - Now for Aria/Liberty!)
I think some trouble shooting comments should be mentioned, so I'll just write a few things I noticed while rooting my device (for 7 frustration filled hours).
If you cannot see your device show up in 'adb devices' in recovery, boot into the OS normally and see if it shows up. If it does not, then it's a safe bet that you have one of two problems - you do not have all the drivers installed, or you do not have 'usb debugging' enabled. This can be enabled in 'settings->applications->development->usb debugging'. To avoid driver issues, it's highly recommended that you do this process in linux or osx.
If, on the other hand, your phone DOES show up in Android but not in recovery, or if it just blips on the screen for a second (when running the loop) as an offline device, then it might be the formatting of your sd card. Do NOT format your sd card from your phone or within Android. The ONLY time I managed to get the phone to show up in recovery without disappearing immediately was by removing the sd card, formatting it in windows or osx with an external card reader, copying the files over (new rom or rooting files), and then replacing it in the phone while the phone is off. After putting the card back in your phone, try the procedure again - go to the bootloader->hboot->recovery (while the cable is unplugged), then press the power button and immediately after plug the cable in (usually works when you plug the cable in about .2-.5 seconds later). If it does not show up at all, reboot the phone and try again, but do NOT let it boot back to Android. You can get back in to the bootloader by waiting until the 'HTC quietly brilliant' screen shows up and typing 'adb reboot bootloader' with the usb cable attached.
It took me a really long time to figure that out. I don't think the type of sd card matters so much as the formatting of it. I actually used the 2gb card that came with the phone, and it worked almost every single time after I reformatted the card.
Also, if you manage to get it working and root the phone, do yourself a huge favor and install the custom Unrevoked recovery image mentioned in the original rooting thread, so you never have to deal with this nonsense ever again.
Also also, if you get to the step where you do 'adb push ota.zip /sdcard/update.zip' and you get an error:0, installation aborted message, you did something wrong. The problem is that you aren't actually supposed to flash ota.zip. What you're supposed to do is push ota.zip to your phone as update.zip, and leave it there. Don't touch anything else. What you will do after that is type 'adb push update.zip /sdcard/update.zip' in the command prompt (WITHOUT hitting enter yet, just get ready to). You will then select 'sdcard:update.zip' and press power and IMMEDIATELY AFTER pressing power, you will press enter on the command prompt to execute your adb push command. What this does is causes recovery to read the ota.zip file you uploaded and recognize it as a legit update, but you replace it with update.zip before it actually gets extracted (if your timing is good). So recovery reads the signature of ota.zip, but actually extracts the stuff in update.zip and runs that instead.
Hope that helps with some common problems I observed. Good luck, dudes.
okay so I think I the only one using a Mac in this rooting process. A few things I have learned and may already be known but I thought I would clarify.
1.) to get a loop to run on the mac i had to re-write the file loop.bat
this is the code that works for me and how to do it.
a.) rename the file to end in .sh not .bat the way it came
b.) open the file with TextEdit
c.) delete all of the text in it and write this in there
Code:
while [ "0" ]
do
{
./adb devices
}
done
d.) save the file back in the sdk/tools folder
e.) in terminal the command once you cd to the folder is ./loop.sh
2.) i have yet to be successful in the attempt to root so anyone knowing anything to help would be appreciated! But i am still cracking i think i am going to wear out the plug before i am done though.
it should be pointed out that the loop does nothing except tell you if you have a connection or not. When you plug in the usb port, it will respond after a few seconds, or it won't. Try again.

This isn't complete - this just gets you to clockwork and you haven't installed anything yet. You need to add steps to add root acces or flash a rom that is rooted. Also, make sure to reference the unrevoked tool to install Clockwork after root so this whole ordeal can be avoided next time.
Yes! The secret was formatting the sd card outside of the phone. I am now rooted and liberated! Thanks for plugging along with all the advice guys!

Really good tips. I hope you don't mind - I am going to link to this to my original thread.
Troubleshooting Tip on Prerequisite Step 2: If you're working behind a firewall, router, or proxy server, you're going to have to configure SDK Setup to use an open port on that device, in order to download updates.
I won't go through the exact steps here, but if SDK setup is hanging, this is the most likely culprit.

You need to do more than just get into Clockwork. That alone doesn't root the phone.

My mistake. He not only updated his instructions, he updated his update.zip. That should do it.
Good job!
I was just wondering If I have device issues after it is rooted, is it possible to remove the root and flash everything back to factory defaults for warranty purposes like the windows phones or is it once the warranty is gone it is gone?

Dunno if you can reflash the stock recovery again if you replaced it with clockwork, but you can definitely flash the stock ATT rom again. You can download it from HTC's site: http://member.america.htc.com/download/Web_materials/Manual/HTC_Aria_ATT/HTCAriaOriginalShipROM.exe
Banging my head on the wall. Got it to detect device once on loop. Never again after that. Phone shows up in device manager. Formatted 8gb and 2 gb cards several times.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that he updated his update.zip.
You guys are right , there are missing step in the tutorial to fully root Aria.
after i get in to the clockwork from the step above. i have to install the custom rom that can be found in the forum.
when i try to install "Unrevoked team: Recovery reflash tool (updated - Now for Aria/Liberty!) " . the process goes throught but the recovery is still the same HTC blue color recovery screen.
so before you insert your sd card into the phone after you format the sd card. remember to copy the rooted rom into the sd card so when you successfully get into the clockwork. you want to install the rom then your aria is rooted with superuser icon on the application.
after then you do the "Unrevoked team: Recovery reflash tool (updated - Now for Aria/Liberty!) step .
There are no steps missing from the first post. I rooted my Aria using that method. Just make sure you have the latest Root.zip from eugene's thread. He updated it the other day and if you try to use the older version of Root.zip with this method it will not work.
What you are doing is installing a custom rom, which is fine, but it's not required to root the Aria.
i was trying to get the clockwork to install and it only work after i load the liberated_aria_b003_signed.zip
before i load liberated_aria_b003_signed.zip , it still give me the default HTC recovery screen.
after i load liberated_aria_b003_signed.zip and install "Unrevoked team: Recovery reflash tool (updated - Now for Aria/Liberty!) " . i get the clockwork screen as the recovery screen .
i still can't get the side loading to show after i follow the step from here
•COMMON:
•Enable USB debugging (settings > applications > development > USB Debugging)
•adb remount
•adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db settings.db
Linux/OS X:
•echo "update secure set value = 1 where name = 'install_non_market_apps';"|sqlite3 settings.db
WINDOWS:
•echo update secure set value = 1 where name = 'install_non_market_apps';|sqlite3 settings.db
COMMON:
•adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
•Reboot phone and sideloading works. (thanks to fluffyarmada)

{TUTORIAL} How I rooted my Epic using "One Click Root"

I take no credit for figuring out how to root the Epic, nor do I take any credit for creating the .bat file.
All credits go to joeykrim for the manual root. And noobnl for the .bat file.
I was having trouble rooting as many of you have been but I have figured out a simple solution that actually worked for me and I hope it works for you.
[STEP 1] First you need to make sure you have android's latest sdk. You can download it at http://developer.android.com/sdk
[STEP 2] After installation (if i remember correctly) sdk should of been installed into the root of your hard drive, normally (C:/). It will be labeled "android-sdk-windows" if you installed the windows version. To make things a lot more simple, you can rename this to "sdk". Anyways, download and install the Samsung Galaxy S drivers. This is the one I installed. http://www.mobile-stream.com/beta/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe
[STEP 3] Go over to "One click root for the Epic 4G! v2.2.4 Now has Busybox & remount scripts!" and grab the latest zip file. I used v2.2.4.
[STEP 4] Extract the folder to the "android-sdk-windows" folder and rename it to "epic". Or something smaller if you want.
[STEP 5] Next open up command prompt (cmd). Start/Run/cmd or start/all programs/command prompt.
[STEP 6] In the command prompt, type "cd \sdk\epic" (sdk, and epic are to be replaced with what you have the folders named). Do not close command prompt.
[STEP 7] Type run.bat and let it do its work.
[STEP 8] Once the phone is rebooted, keep the phone connected and in that same command prompt type "adb shell" you should get a "$" symbol.
[STEP 9] Now type "su" and you should get a "#" symbol.
STEP 10] If you got those symbol's, then you are now rooted. Now go into the market and download "Superuser" by "ChainsDD".
You should now be rooted. This was tested on a Acer Aspire One netbook running Windows XP. If you are running Windows Vista/7, then the only different step you need to do is right-click the cmd/command prompt and select "run as administrator".
This was also done without mounting the sd card like some users have done to make it work. If it doesn't work, try mounting the SD card. If all else fails, restart the phone and try again. What I did was pull the battery out and then tried it.
As stated before, credits go to joeykrim at sdx-developers and noobnl from our very own xda-developers.
Have a nice day
OMG..... I GOT IT ROOTED YEEEEHHHHHAAAAA )))
Thank you so much for everyone involved in making this possible for all of us )
I'll add something I've noticed while fiddling around with all of the "one-click" installations:
Do not let your phone lock/go to sleep while they are running (step 7 above).
I couldn't figure out why they would work sometimes and not others (device not found errors) and I think this may have been it.
You can also launch the .bat by double-clicking it wherever you extracted it to instead of going through the command prompt to save a couple steps.
If this is way off base please let me know what is really causing the problem or just delete this post!

If you want to use the superuser app you need to do some additional modifications because the root method actually replaces su every time you reboot. I wrote the steps out in this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788939
i finally got it to work for me
after several times trying to install and nothing just $ after $ after $ then i noticed the advise on removing the battery at the very end
so leaving the phone connect my cmd window still open i pulled the battery waited bout a 30 seconds then put the battery back in booted the phone
once the SD finished its scan
i ran the ADB SHELL and typed su and got the #
so thanks much for the help guide

myTouch 3g Slide Rooting

Hi,
I have a Mytouch 3g Slide. I tried to root it with the following steps.
Download the Slide Root zip file @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702973
On your device, navigate to Settings, select Application then Development and make sure you turn on USB Debugging
Turn off your myTouch 3G Slide
Extract the content of the zip file you downloaded to your Android SDK Tools folder on your computer
Open up a command prompt window and navigate to your SDK Tools directory
Boot your myTouch 3G Slide in bootloader mode: turn it on and press and hold Volume Down and Power
From your command prompt execute loop.bat to start a loop on your computer
Now on your myTouch 3G Slide pick Recovery from the bootloader menu
The recovery should load and you should now have an Offline Device.
Stop the loop on your computer (CTRL+C will do it)
Disconnect the USB cable from your device and plug it back in
adb should detect your device now, test it and make sure it is in recovery mode
From the menu on your device, pick update.zip. It will fail and that is normal.
Now back to your computer type: adb push ota.zip /sdcard/update.zip
Then type: adb push slideroot.zip
Now type: adb push update.zip /sdcard BUT DON’T PRESS ENTER YET.
Back to your myTouch 3G Slide, select update.zip again.
As soon as the process starts press Enter on your computer to start the adb command (adb push update.zip /sdcard )
You should now see Clockwork Recovery on your device.
Go to the Partitions menu and select Mount System
Go back then pick install any zip from sdcard
Make sure you select slideroot.zip and pick apply update from zip to complete the root process
Soft reset your device.
If you want to check if your device is connected use the command adb devices and you will see it in the list of devices attached
Again from the command prompt type: adb install Superuser.apk
Once Superuser is installed use adb shell to shell to your device.
Type su to gain root access.
Click to collapse
Only problem is that when the phone is in recovery mode, I cannot run an ADB command because I get an error saying the phone is offline then. How can I make this work. I've been trying for hours now and its pretty frustrating.

[Guide] Telus Motorola Backflip with CM7 Android 2.3.7

Recently I've got a cheap Motorola Backflip for Telus, then I start exploring and find a solution to upgrade to 2.3.7. I've spent 2 whole days facing the computer but eventually got the solution.
I don't know is there anyone still using this ancient phone but I wish this thread can help the one who needs this and also update some of the out-dated processes.
Origin: Android 1.5
Let's start:
(The following are tested on a telus backflip)
First Root
1) Go setting>Application> Development>USB debugging. check the debugging box
Put a at least 1GB memory card in your phone
2)Connect your phone to computer. USB connecting type: "charge only"
3)Download pdanet so that they can install the driver you need, run it after you downloaded it with your phone connected to the computer
http://www.junefabrics.com/android/download.php
4)Download adb and extract all the files to the root of (C: )
http://www.mediafire.com/?tntogmymgo16ac0
5)Download the rageagainstthecage file, create a file called "Moto_MSM_Root" in (C: ), then extract all the files into "Moto_MSM_Root" in (C: )
http://www.mediafire.com/?azcraghfl12sw8w
6)Download “Terminal Emulator” and "Rootchecker" and put them in the root of (C: )
http://www.iapktop.com/wp-content/plugins/download-monitor/download.php?id=5181

adb devices
Example:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX device
8b)start rooting
Code:
adb install RootCheckPro.apk
adb install Android_Terminal_Emulator_v1.0.32.apk
adb push c:\Moto_MSM_Root\Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
adb push c:\Moto_MSM_Root\su /sdcard/su
adb push c:\Moto_MSM_Root\rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
adb push c:\Moto_MSM_Root\install-root.sh /data/local/tmp/install-root.sh
adb shell
cd /data/local/tmp
chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
chmod 0755 install-root.sh
Keep your phone connecting to the computer
9)Backflip: open the terminal emulator in your Backflip
10)type the following in the terminal emulator on Backflip
Code:
cd /data/local/tmp
./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
11)Wait for a while until you see this message
Code:
[+] Forked xxxx childs.
12)Close the " terminal emulator"
13)Open " terminal emulator" and type the following (!My " terminal emulator" failed to open after closing it, so I force close it by this method: Setting>Application>Manage Applications>terminal emulator>Force close! Open terminal emulator again and type the code):

[Resolved] Rooting the LG after ZV8 update

Rooting Method for ZV8 has been found!
You will need:
LGPwn.apk
SpriteBud in "/System/xbin/"
SuperUser.apk
Steps to Root:
First, we must make sure you have spritebud. You can check for this via ADB with this code.
ADB:
Code:
adb shell ls -l /system/xbin/spritebud
If you get any error message along the lines of "no such file or directory", then you my friend are unable to root. Otherwise, you should be presented with information about spritebud, and that is your golden ticket to root
Ok for those who have spritebud please continue on. If you did not have spritebud, you can download the txt file attached for instructions on how to root the zv8 in your case. Its a bit of a longer process but sure does work.
Step: 1
Download LGPwn.apk and install to your phone either via ADB or Transfer to your sdcard.
To install Via ADB, move LGPwn.apk to where your adb directory is at.
Press "Shift" and Right click and click on "Open command window here"
Type in the CMD window "ADB DEVICES" and make sure your phone is visible.
*If not reconnect the phone and make sure USB Debugging is ON.
Then type ADB INSTALL LGPwn.apk
Wait a few seconds and LGPwn.apk should be succesfully installed.
Step: 2
Now go to your phone and Open LGPwn.apk
READ popup message
Press "root me" to carry on the next part
When Backup has launched, choose Restore
Choose Internal storage
Choose LGPwn
Hit OK at the popup about Cross Model Restore
Make sure the Applications checkbox is checked, then select Continue
Let the app finish the restoring process
Step: 3
When done install SuperUser.apk that is attached to this post.
And with that finished you should be rooted!
