Hi folks,
I'm thinking of picking up the galaxy s, the samsung vibrant from t-mobile to use on my carrier.
i had a few questions and hope you fellas can help me out.
1st, what would be involved in unlocking it? Would I have any problems getting it unlocked?
Also i'm a total noob to android but i've been reading up. What exactly is "rooting"? will rooting allow me to put a stock 2.2 on it? is that even possible and is it recomended on this phone?
and lastly from people who have been using this phone, do you recommend getting it?
thanks
oh snap! i posted this in the wrong board. it should have been in the "Galaxy S I9000 General"
sorry mods.
Rooting allows you to get access to parts of the phone you otherwise wouldn't have access to. Compare it to having administrator rights on windows, you can access more files, do more stuff. Programs can perform more actions when your phone is rooted.
Putting 2.2 on it is completely seperate from that and at this moment is not possible. However, Samsung already stated that the first 2.2 update will be somewhere in august (not for euro/usa regions though) so perhaps withing the month after that it will also be available for other regions. Samsung has officially announced that it WILL be updated though, so no need to worry about that.
Without the 2.2 update it's already pretty damn fast though (with some tweaks its faster then the Nexus one WITH 2.2) so I would certainly already recommend it.
This is my first android phone (after symbian, windows mobile and more) and it's really easy to get used to and works just great. The screen is beautiful (good colors, vibrant although reading text on it is a less great experience) and it's very fast. Also feels light, in a good way, great screen, etc. I can totally recommend it.
ps. No idea what the status on unlocking is, mine was unlocked already so never looked into it.
you might want to make sure the frequency bands of the one you acquire will work on the carrier you want to use it on
if not, it may not work at all, or may not give you 3G data svc
personally i didnt think any phones are locked down anymore, at least not in the UK?
you should buy the phone, its the best ive owned, not saying its the best on the market but id like to hear of an arguement for why it isnt.
rooting was done on this device even before release, and with already 300k sales in south korea alone it looks like its going to have some great support and updates in the future
I have asked this question before in the xda general section but no responces so maybe ill have luck here. So I purchased the Galaxy S 4g 1 month ago and while I like this phone I want to exchange it for the g2x. I just want to know if its possible, if anyone has tried exchanging their phone after the 14 days because this is my second unit and I am still having major battery issues. Ive tried everything from recalibrating the battery, putting the screen on the minimum brightmes+ screen filter, juice defender, going back to completely stock with no apps, etc and my battery life is still pretty terrible. After playing ONE hour of words with friends (bored and i just wanted to test) my phone goes from 100 to 20%. Words with friends isnt even a cpu heavy game and it took that much out of the battery? Its just unacceptable so I want to try out the g2x which from what I have read has amazing battery life for an android device. So if anyone can provide any advice on what can I do to exchange this phone I would greatly appreciate it. The earlier I change this phone the better. Sorry if this question has already been asked. Ive done a search and i didnt find anything. Thanks

It's called warranty. So unless you bought a different region phone that nullifies warranty, contact the manufacturer and explain your problem, they'll have you ship it back to them for a fix. When you get a working unit back, either enjoy it, or sell it and get something else.

This is my second phone, I already used the waranty because my first had the exact same problem so instead of going through the entire process again I just want to avoid the galaxy s 4g all together and get the g2x. Selling the phone isnt really an option either because who would want a galaxy s 4g when there is the g2x, the sensation, and galaxy s 2 right around the corner. I only got this phone because I was doing a switch of responsibility which means my 2 years starting all over again so I decided might as well upgrade. Now im stuck with this thing.

Yes, if it was less than thirty days then it's possible. If it's beyond thirty days then you may have a hard time. My girl bought a Vibrant and didn't like it, but liked my Hd2 running Cm7. It had been 27 days since she bought the Vibrant, and she was able to return it, and me pay the 100.00 difference for a MyTouch 4g. So, the end result was she got my HD2, and I got a new MyTouch 4g. She had to complain (in store) about the Vibrant, and the manager approved the return. Technically, you have 14 days, unless a manager approves the return. Just don't make it obvious that the only reason you're returning the Galaxy is because the G2x is out.
You might want to try customer loyalty if you can't find a manager.

Thanks for replying. I think im going to have big issues in returning this phone then. I just realised that this is my 2nd month not 1st owning this phone. Plus our store reps where I live arent too friendly. My mom got a feature phone because she doesnt need a data plan but when she wanted to return it and couldnt within 14 days because of constant snow storms they did not let her even after talking to the manager. They kept saying well thats to bad, you had 14 days. Ill still try it out though, if that doesnt work ill try calling customer service.

I remember reading somewhere that words with friends is a major battery killer. Anyways, you could try offering to return the phone and resigning a new two year contract with the g2x. When in doubt, mention switching to another provider.

This.
If all else fails, sell that Vibrant 4G on Craigslist. I bet you can easily get close to $500 for it. Especially if it's brand new and in perfect condition. If you have everything it came with, reseal it and sell it new in box.
since the g2x is out, the GS will not worth $500 anymore...since the full retail price of the g2x is $500

I recently bought a galaxy s2, so I'm going to be selling my captivate soon. I plan on selling it on ebay and was wondering the best way to get get the most value out of it. Should I flash back to stock or put an good rom on it? should I have it rooted? I know there a way better roms than stock but I wonder if some people will prefer a stock phone rather than one that has been modified. Any suggestions?

I know it's not the same situation, but I recently sold a nook color rooted with CM7 (on Craigslist). I got multiple responds within an hour of posting. Everyone who contacted me was looking specifically for rooted and the ability to do custom ROMs. I would imagine there are plenty of people who are looking for rooted and custom rom phones.
However, be careful on how you word your item. I know both eBay and Craigslist will remove your posting if they can detect that you're selling a device with custom ROMs on it. My first posting on Craigslist was removed and I had to reword it.

Broaden your customer base by Sim Unlocking it. That way not just AT&T users can buy it.
Hey, brentett, please update the thread once you've sold with how it went I've also got an GS2 i777 on its way and am thinking about selling my cappy

Same here.. I had posted my cappy on craigslist the day i got my gs2, noted that it had 4.0.3 on it... no replies in a week. so i removed the listing, and flashed it back to stock and stuck it in the gs2 box (got it out to flash official gingerbread, then put it back in box)

I'm not really following what exactly you did?
Go back to stock....and as stated, sim unlock it. That gives you the widest audience.
I posted mine on CL and offered to return to stock or flash any ROM.
Sold it a few months ago for around $160.
I listed mine on CL with ics and had a buyer with in a day at $150.
I've created this thread so anyone (like me) that has gotten a warranty replacement for there hox through at&t can discuss there experiences with them good or bad, as well as what software it came with and things of that nature.
with that being said, i myself am waiting on my third replacement from them as of now. the first being sent back because of frequent signal loss and a (what sounded like) a blown speaker phone. the second one i have now is going back because the colors are darker than the should be and the whites are horrible looking tan and kind of pinkish on different screen. only fix was to turn the brightness all the way up and kill my battery faster than i should have to. also, as of now, both replacements have came with 2.20 installed on them. maybe three times a charm on a decent replacement as well as a different software version. if anything i can live with 2.20 as long as the phone lives up to the $150 i paid the first time.
reserved for update when replacement arrives. replacement has arrived and ive posted a reply in the thread about it instead of here.
I got my first One X on 9/10 as a refurb with 1.85. I had a GS II and received a replacement with issues followed by 2 DOA replacements, so they gave me a One X (long story involving over a month of calls and "troubleshooting" ). It was a full kit with charger and SIM, and whoever put the SIM in mangled the hole for the tool. It also has some sort of crack or blemish in the screen under the glass. It looks like stuck pixels, but it changes color by angle. I got a replacement on 9/17 with 2.20 installed. The screen was already scratched, and the screen protector had been removed and reapplied crooked and bubbly. I sent that one back and am still using the first one so I can root. I'll try again for a replacement in a few weeks if I can't get used to this screen issue or if 2.20 is rooted. Or I may just take the offer for early upgrade and discounted GS III.

I was going to thread crap, but what the hell..
My refurb replacement was cosmetically perfect, but the volume rocker is a tiny bit loose, and I get some creaks from the screen, but I only notice them when I'm cleaning it, wiping it down. I'm not enough of douche to complain about these things.
[Reserved for snarky thread crap comment in.near future]
I'm not really a proponent of calling people out, but I seriously question peoples' OCD when it comes to these stories of "this is my 9th replacement device" and so on. (edit: didn't necessarily mean the previous sentence to apply to anyone in this thread; I just know how these replacement complaints can go) If you convince yourself enough times that you have a hardware or software issue, that issue will begin to appear. It's called FEAR. False Evidence Appearing Real. Been there, done that with a Blackberry and I'm not going down that road ever again. It's simply not worth the anxiety.
I've had one issue with this phone and it had to do with the SIM card error. It could have been the card, could have been the phone, but since I was within my 30 days the rep just exchanged it out to be certain.
this thread is for good or bad discussion on your replacement. and if your calling someone a douche for complaining or not on here then remove your post, cause as much as you would like to not believe it you just complained in your own way the things you obviously dislike about your replacement. and i reserved a spot for hopefully nothing but good things to say about my coming replacement. its thread trolls like you that keep people from xda anymore. its you dont like a thread go read a different one, i didnt make you spend time coming to mine or reading through it.
Mine is solid so far, got it yesterday... only problem is that it came with 2.20

Easy there, defensive.
I was pointing out how some people get with these replacements. I thought I made that clear when I outlined my experience. I hope you get a good phone!

You want to flip out at the warranty dept and demand the customer retention dept. They are the people that can make it all happen. I had an atrix that was having issues. After my 3rd replacement the gave me a 250$ credit, let me upgrade early and I was able to keep the atrix and sell it.

If you have a certain amount of faulty devices they will usually ask if you want to switch to a different model (they give you a couple of options).

Here is my full story of how I went from the Galaxy S II to the One X for free.
On 8/15 I called AT&T about my Galaxy S II with an issue. They were back ordered so I was offered a Skyrocket. The Skyrocket is slow, sluggish, and poor battery compared to the Galaxy S II, so I refused and called a service center daily until they had one. That one had a different issue. I called and politely asked for a different phone. After talking to retention, warranty, and resolution I was denied everywhere (resolution offered early upgrade, but not until October, an offer I may still take them up on). They had the Galaxy S II back in stock so they sent me one of those. It came with screen burn in and black splotches on the screen, so they sent me another one, and it was the same. All the phones had date codes in 8/2011. At that point they wanted to troubleshoot the second one some more. It was randomly shutting down, and they had me try factory resets, new battery (they actually sent 2) and a new SIM. After a month of calling several times a week, I was finally offered the One X. I would have taken anything that wasn't the Skyrocket. I was actually hoping for Atrix HD because I wanted dedicated HDMI and MicroSD. But, I wasn't given options, just a One X or try another Galaxy S II. I have worked in a call center long enough to know being nice is far more effective at getting what you want vs yelling. I received a refurb with charger, and I had to send back my Galaxy S II. But, my contract was not extended so I still qualify in May 2013.
I haven't decided yet if I want to get a GS III in October, or wait for the GS IV next year. Either way my wife will probably get this One X to replace her iPhone 4 (she qualifies in July 2013).

well, i got my new one x today. gotta say i love it like my first one. ive got all my stuff on it, set it up how i wanted, and tested everything. its my third replacement because the last two had problems. its perfect and now im just waiting for root to come to 2.20 because it seems every phone at&t is sending out it updated to 2.20 before shipping. i think they do this because of the new root patching it does. well anyways, i got it and i love it!! goodtimes!!!!
I had issues with my backlight becoming intermittent. It would go out and required flexing the phone to get it back on. It was probably a loose connection on the backlight. I was running a custom Rom with super CID. The techs at the store and the repair center failed to notice. It shouldn't have made a difference anyway because the problem was hardware. I had a launch HT23 and received a HT25 refurbished replacement with 2.20 installed.

well here is my story
my hox came with 2.20 i got the phone 2weeks ago exactly. i found out while in the store that they are manually updating the phones to 2.20 i thought to myself ok thats odd. then i later found out no root for 2.20 as of yet. so i started having issues with wifi dropping off for no reason then it would come back. that didn't brother me to badly until i started to experience a very odd issue with the back button would say 40% of the time it would turn on the vibrate function n wouldn't turn off until i hit the back button again that got me pissed 2 weeks old n i have to deal with this i ended go back to the store they told me nothing they could do nothing for me except to return the phone n refund me the money i spent minus restocking fee i got pissed and walked out. i got a hold of customer service because i am a business customer they bent over backwards and sent me a NEW one i informed them i know of the issues with the refurbs my friends have been thru this so she and her supervisor allowed it to send me a brand new White one but here is the kicker they told me to keep my Current one X i thought that was odd so i call back they also informed me to keep it so i guess ill find out what software version i get and also if i have to send this one back at some point if an audit catches it and then i will complain more..lol
My Interesting story for the day
What did say to get them to send you a new replacement? I'm also a business customer, though not the owner of the account. Just curious how you played that angle. I'm debating whether to get my phone replaced, but have concerns about refurbished units, many of which confirmed in this thread. Thanks.

i think its because my phone is only 2 weeks old and i told them i would not accept a refurb unit due to issues i have read here and my friends have experienced i am also not the owner on the account but i am an authorized user its all how u talk to them dont demand anything kill them with kindness and talk to them as a human being and joke around with them n tell them u have already reset ur phone 2 twice and the problem still is there and blame the 2.20 update for causing software glitches and there are known hardware problems also the rep was nice enough to tell me that there was a recent bulletin about wifi and software issues related to the 2.20 update. also try to call back at a later time to get another rep and also remember this if you cannot make head way with 1 rep try again if the second one cant make it happen call back again n talk to a supervisor and inform them u know about issues with refurb one x's having issues.
Thanks for the info.
My phone has shut itself off overnight a couple of times in the past few weeks. Seemingly randomly. If it happens again, I'll give your idea a shot.

Long story short, a bad update to CM 11 M6 and some sleep deprevation and I tried to reset it and start again. I managed to download the wrong stock rom, 4.3 and now my phone is nearly unusable (reboots, SD corruption, apps won't install, etc.) and Verizon won't touch it since I dared to root it. I can't deal with the issues since it's my primary and I need it for work so I'm going have to get a new one and just try to sell this and recoup some money.
The phone in question is a Galaxy S3 SCH-535. I'm month-to-month so while I didn't want to I can get a phone on contract. I can't stand OEM customizations so I want a nice, modifiable phone. Something without a locked bootloader or other crap that I can do what I want with. I was looking at the S4, S5 and HTC One M8 in particular but I'm not sure which one will meet my requirements.
So, what is the best Verizon phone that is customizable? A quick answer would be nice since I don't want to be down more than I have too in case work calls me.
Edit: Missed the question notice and I couldn't delete it, sorry.
