I did a search and didn't find the software anywhere on XDA -
For those who don't know - you can have your exchange account synced with your G1 in real time.
The only catch, the software is $50/year - a bit expensive but I'm sure something will come out open source eventually.
The software basically grabs all your outlook data for your exchange account and syncs it into gmail contacts/calendar/mail - folders work and using googles send as 2nd email address - you can send mails via the G1 as the email address you use with exchange. It's really a pretty flawless integration of all your exchange data, quite impressive.
I've been using it for a few days and it works flawlessly - they have a free trial too if you aren't sure.
The software is called MailShadowG and can be downloaded from - www.cemaphore.com
Their support is really good too if you require it.
Sorry if this is has been mentioned before, I couldn't find it on search anywhere and wanted to share the info with others who may not have known this was here.
if all you need is the exchange calendar, then u can use google's calendar sync application to sync between google's calendar and the exchange calendar.
Hmmm. This program seems odd. I'm going to stick with TouchDown. www.nitrodesk.com

I didn't even know TouchDown existed.
A few issues I see with touchdown though - it only gives you the calendar events for one single day, and there is no real-time updating, you have to manually go in and refresh to get new email.
One thing I like about MailShadowG - is that, essentially, you are getting all the real-time push and same features of having your exchange with outlook on a Win Mo phone. Full calendar, contacts, and email in real time synced with your exchange.
Even touchdown admits to all these faults, MailShadow does virtually all these -
* Exchange 2003 support has some limitations
* Does not push email (but we're pulling hard for it)
* You have to poll periodically (please dont do it too frequently 3G downloads are rather drain'y on the battery)
* Calendar shows just one day of events (today)
* You have to refresh the calendar yourself. (the only time the calendar refreshes itself if you made a change to a non-recurring event ocurring on the same day)
* You cannot add bcc to email
* You cannot create or edit appointments
aardvark is working on exchange with full push capabilities.
Anyone offering anything that doesn't do real push email, is not worth bothering with IMO.
Push is crucial.
MailShadowG DOES do real push - since your G1 already does push with the Gmail contacts/calendar/gmail.
aad4321-
You might be out of luck then for now, just have to wait for Aardvark. MailShadow is an outlook add-on, roughly. So your PC must be on with outlook running. You must have Exchange Caching enabled as well as the ability to open imap.gmail.com to port 993 - if you can do these things you should have no problem getting it to work.
Do you get exchange at home as well on your outlook?
I was skeptical of MailShadowG at first so I used the trial, but it works extremely well, everything is near instantaneous - it syncs with the phones contacts/calendar/mail and feels just like real-time exchange like I had on my 8525.
However, due to their stupid 1 year license and rather expensive price - I'm banking on there being a cheaper/free exchange solution within the next year or so. Although I do love having all my exchange data backed up in my gmail which is kind of cool.

The program sync's your exchange data into gmail and makes it accessible via the G1 - you are still using exchange - in fact, the email you send on your G1 will be sent via your exchange email address. A major benefit to this setup is that all your exchange data is backed up on gmail servers as well. Plus, if exchange should go down, you can send via gmail (setting in the mailshadow config).

Greta, so now I have duplicate emails everywhere, that I then need to delete form my original exchange mailbox.
No thanks.

Why such negativity? It's like you just want to hate a nice piece of software.
Your only duplicate is a BACKUP.. If you delete a message in gmail (on your G1) then that message is deleted in outlook/exchange. Heck, if you READ a message on your G1 in gmail, it will instantly show up in outlook as read. And vice versa. If you move a file to a different folder on your phone, it moves that file in outlook/exchange as well.
This truly is a pretty all-encompassing exchange solution for the G1. I use it for my business and work email that's on exchange and it works really well.

It's a shame the company won't let you sync gmail with exchange.

No, but if they're going to charge $50,- A YEAR, then I expect a proper working App, that syncs to Exchange dureclty using proper push, and not same half baked hacked together workaround using ANOTHER email client.
I think that's a pretty reasonable expectation.
If they were offering it for free, it would be an acceptable compromise for now.

But thats the thing, it's really not "half baked" - I would prefer a one time license fee and also believe it's a bit expensive for what the program does... but they are the ONLY company with a real exchange solution right now. And at the end of the day, my contacts/calendar/email is sync'd with my exchange account 100% with a backup on gmail.
I think it's overpriced but I have to have my exchange on my phone so I don't have a choice. Because of their pricing, as soon as exchange support is released I will be dumping MailShadow - if it was fairly priced, I'd probably actually keep it over a true exchange support due to the backup and gmail integration.
I would rather pay (and I did) $19 for a license from Touchdown and have my phone poll and look actually work like a real program than what this program does for $50/year. If Touchdown doesnt get some things resolved like push (most important) or the options to see or open attachments/embedded jpg's, I will hope that Aardvark comes in where Touchdown falters. But as of now, I am happy with Touchdown until something better comes along....and MailShadow is not it.

I've actually been using TouchDown and it's not that bad. I just set it to pull data every hour. One thing I'll warn you about is that it only pulls down data that hits the server after the initial connection and refresh. So, any back email you might have in your box won't be downloaded. Personally, at work I have everything on a 3 day archive, so my mailbox in 3 days won't have anything I received today, which makes it a non problem for me. But I have a feeling they'll probably fix it in the future anyway.

It may not be "half baked" but a user agent that dumps the exchange data to gmail is not a "real exchange solution." This thing would get you all sorts of static from a corporate IT department!
If it works for you, great, but it's definitely not an ideal workaround by any stretch.
It is a real exchange solution. It may not be a real exchange solution for every company - but it is for others.
For me, it actually turned my G1 into a phone that has all my exchange data in real-time push. To me, that is a solution

Touchdown is extremely limited with no push, whereas MailShadow gives you all your exchange data - both in AND out of the phone in real time. To me, that seems like a pretty ideal solution.
Considering you are using gmail/calendar/contacts - you are definitely getting a "real" program with MailShadow.
I think MailShadow is expensive, but you definitely get what they say you do, and that is ALL your exchange features you are used to, in real-time push - on the G1. You can set appointments on the calendar, get multiple days, instant notification of new emails, integrates with your phones contacts, etc.
Thats true that it doesnt have any push. But at the same time, I wont get in trouble w/my supervisors. Im in IT and we dont allow any corporate email to be forwarded anywhere (especially gmail). I work for a pharmaceutical company so obviously all email has to be secure. Company email going to Gmail is a really big concern for any big corporation, especially in the healthcare field. While I think its a good idea if its a small company or a company that doesnt care about security, it wont cut it for the others. That, on top of a 1 time fee as opposed to a yearly fee....its a no brainer. I change my polling to change by how often I need my email. If Im stepping away from my office, I have it polling every minute. If Im in the office and on my computer, I dont really need for it to be checked, so I can change it to every 5 or 10 minutes. I just hope that either they or Aardvark roll out push Exchange soon, in the meantime, I will continue to use Touchdown.
Yup, hopefully Aardvark comes out soon with a sweet Exchange solution soon.
IMO, what's really needed for these phones, and might even be on the cards with Google's licensing of the Exchange ActiveSync protocol, is a BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server)-like relay package.
A piece of software that sits on a computer or server (or the server) in the office, and stays logged into each of your user's Exchange mailboxes via MAPI, then syncs messages, calendar, contacts etc. realtime to the Google Mail / Gmail account.
Shouldn't be very hard to create, especially for those who have written apps like GsyncIT.
I believe there already is one such package, I found it a few days ago, can't remember the name - it has an M in it ( ), but it looked a bit pricey and like it was intended to do more than just Exchange -> Gmail (was a generic Cloud-sync package).
A fairly simple extension of something like GsyncIT I should think. The Exchange Information Store ACLs would be modified so that user "GoogleSyncAdmin" has Full Mailbox access to the mailboxes concerned, and the users would be mapped to GoogleMail accounts. Job done, proper push synchronisation on Android. The handsets would just be registered to a Gmail account.
The alternative, which may also be on the cards for the same reason, is that Google develop a BIS (Blackberry Internet Service)-like extension to Gmail, whereby Gmail stays logged into your Exchange Account via ExchangeActiveSync, and pulls changes down. This would require working EAS on the user's Exchange Server, and would require providing Exchange credentials to Gmail. I guess it'd be just like their current POP-downloading facility, but for Exchange, and hopefully including Calendar & Contacts sync.
I prefer the BES-like solution personally. No ports need to be opened on the user's Exchange server, you could run multiple Exchange servers behind a no-inbound firewall, and it's probably less troublesome overall. The BES-like package could also inject hidden instruction-messages that control features of the handset, IT policy, block downloads, wipe data etc.
Doing exchange->[beslike software]->gmail->phone would mean that any messages sent from the device would come from your gmail account though, not your exchange account.
Much better to have a true exchange client on the device, then it works both ways.

No, they would just allow you to set Reply-To/From: just like they do with your other existing emails addresses at the moment.
I think this device rapidly needs Exchange/Activesync support, Office Documents and USB internet sharing for free and quick.
I am testing this device for our company and unless it can do these well and ideally free then its a non-starter for us.
This is the product I had seen: http://www.cemaphore.com/index.html
Lowest pricing is $325/yr for 5 users with the online service, which isn't so expensive, but annual pricing is a pain, and can't buy less than 5 users.
cemaphore is buggy.
Their client crashes constantly, and says mail is sent that never really was. Avoid or wait till it's more stable in later versions.
Currently, I fall on the WinMo side of the coin.
All my email is hosted by Google Apps, and is pushed to my WinMo device by GoogleApps using the MS Activesync (MS Exchange Server) protocol.
If I move onto an ANDROID device, what mechanisms are available to me, to have 'always on' push-email? Will my GoogleApps account have to MS ActiveSync to my Google Powered phone? Seems a bit weird. I know there are some 'constant connected' implementations of IMAP too, but apparently they're particularly resource / data hungry.
Can anyone advise - I'm likely to buy my first Android phone quite soon.
The default gmail application does push. There are also several options and settings for push or timed queries for other mail services, exchange or otherwise through market applications or the stock email application.
Android phones usually have 2 mail apps. One for gmail which automatically pushes mail to the app and works absolutely brilliantly. The second is for all other types of mail accounts eg pop, Imap, and exchange ActiveSync. This can be scheduled or set to push under ActiveSync.
Thanks folks, for all the input.
This sounds like it would actually work better for me, as it seems I'd be able to have instant push email through the gmail app, for my google-apps domain, and the second mail client could be pushed email directly from an exchange server.
Wonder how it'll handle contacts from both!
I think all that remains now, is do I get the HTC Desire, or the SE Xperia X10,
and that's a question out of scope for this thread, I think.
Has anyone tried setting up gmail as an activesync account so all email will be in one app? I've tried different things for the username and domain and can't get it to connect.
I actually switched from having a hosted MSexchange account to a Googleapps GMail acct, and push works great.

according to googleapps, username is your FULL email address - [email protected] or [email protected]. domain should be blank. the 'Exchange' server is m.google.com. The option for using security should be selected.
Having never laid hands on Android, I can't tell you how to input these; but this is what I use on WinMo, and on my Nokia with the MailForExchange client.

The email app on android doesn't have a seperate domain box and keeps putting a '\' on the front of the '<mail name>@gmail.com' :-(
I know this is some sort of thread necromancy but I have a question regarding setting up google mail while also using the standard google account for synchronisation.
Both methods offer also synchronisation of contacts and calendars. While having both calendar synchronisation options active it will clone your entries. What about the contact synchronisation? It seems reasonable to have both options active as adding a new contact over the email app (which will use the exchange active sync) would synchronise with the google contacts which in turn should fill up your contacts handbook. Or is it obsolete as the stock email app will already add the contact to your google account even using seemingly another account?
I would appreciate any attempts to clear this confusion
Nevermind. Found it out myself: just stay with the google account, the stock email app takes it info from there and does integrate it.
issue im facing on the GMail app that comes built in with the OS, I cannot move emails to a specific folder. Any overcome ?
Some of this needs to be done from a PC......
well moving to a folder is a basic function, and being a google phone i feel the GMAIL app is lacking in quite alot of basic needs, not mentioning the UI.
Been an iphone user, and GMAIL was awesome on iphone. Can say, gmail on iphone mail app been an awesome experience. The push mail is quite similiar to BlackBerry on iphone. Quite disappointed on my email experience with android.

Same here.
With 4 email accounts, i feel like the only one that works correctly with push is Gmail.
Other emails have to be set through independent apps, if available, which is very annoying.
The native email app doesn't have a push option, draining battery every time it goes fetch.
Android is a powerhouse.
There's gotta be a solution for this.
I would like emails on the same app, and push.
I need a phone for business and the best email phone is still the Blackberry.
Hi guys,
For all those who are looking for having your private domain mails pushed to your phone, without having an Exchange setup, GMAIL does it!
Here is a step by step guide for adding POP/IMAP mail accounts into your GMAIL account and therefore getting the mails pushed to your phone.
Only thing is that the mails take around 15-20 minutes to come through, as GMAIL fetches your POP/IMAP mails into its server every 15 minutes.
http://www.androidcentral.com/using-gmail-your-own-personal-push-mail-server

Next alternative is using SEVEN MAIL! this is a brilliant app, very very easy to setup, and gives you mails in 5-10 minutes max!
here is the page where they have a direct download link for the SEVEN app
http://techie-buzz.com/mobile-news/seven-a-push-email-client-released-on-android-2-1.html
and above all, like Gmail, its also FREE!

I am trying to setup a WP7 Outlook, but it won`t connect to a company Exchange Server.
Always getting error- Error code: 80072EE7.
I have read on web that certificates needs to be installed on wp7. I did it, but no luck.
I used to synch this exchange account on my HTC Evo 4G.
Any ideas how to fix issue?
I wish WP7 had a better way to load self-signed certificates.
Best way to install a cert is to e-mail it to yourself using a Gmail account, set up the Gmail account on WP7, open the e-mail and the resulting certificate attachment, and then install the certificate.
Thanks for response,
But,
Everywhere on web people talking about certificates and no one says which particular cert needs to be installed.
I tried with verisign, Microsoft root authorication and other kind public certificates. But issue still persist.
Who knows where can I get the exact certificate from?
Also make sure you are putting in the local domain
(whateveryourdomain.local)
It is required for WP7 unless your username has the domain in it.
For cert... here is what one user said...
1. went to google chrome on my desktop, spanner, options, under the hood, manage certificates.
2. go trusted root certificate authorities.
3. found the certificate from our server.
4. exported it as a DER encoded binary X.509 (.cer) file to the desktop
5. emailed it to my godaddy account on my WP7 phone.
6. clicked on the link installed it AND THEN created the outlook account on my WP7 phone.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOT HAVE ANY OUTLOOK ACCOUNTS ACTIVE WHEN INSTALLING THE CERTIFICATE.
thanks for all your help guys!
yes, sure I have local domain:
\whatever - this is what i used on android outlook settings.
how to know which one is our server certificate?
in WP 7 though you don't need a slash. just the domain name when it asks for it.
For the cert... can you get to your mail server via web mail?
For ours in IE9, i just click the lock by the address bar and hit view certificate. Also if you know your Exchange admin, ask him to send it to you via the hotmail account. they you can just click on it and install it.
I believe we do not use any certificate. probably we use public certificates. i do not see lock next to address bar.
Does you host require on device encryption?
Does your company provide instructions for other phones? I may be able to tell you or translate them to how it works in windows phone.
No lock? go to advanced in account and uncheck ssl. I think its on by default.
If that doesn't work pm me the the web outlook address an i can tell u if there is one on there at least.
still cannot synch my outlook account. is there any new ideas?
The only thing left i can say is talk to your exchange admin / tech support. All the settings seem correct for a normal setup. Maybe they are using on device encryption... the only thing that windows phone really doesn't support for exchange, or maybe there is a setting we don't know that they will tell you.
The questions to ask are -
Does it require on device encryption?
Is the certificate required the same one outlook webmail uses as that is the one i walked you through installing?
Is the mail server address the same as outlook webmail minus the owa?
What is the local domain of the mail server? (that is different then the mail server address in most cases)
Does the username have to be whole email address? domain\username? or just username
Does the exchange admin have to add my phone?
Hope that helps get your questions answered.
I need some help also. I had my exchange account on my phone until my comp did server upgrades. This knocked me off as they say this will only support Blackberry and iPhone, don't ask me why. So I was able to setup my exchange account on my Android Epic 4g after trying for a week, as I figured if an iPhone can access it my Android should also. But I have tried the same settings from my Android phone on my WP7 and no luck.
After reading this it looks like I need to follow the above mentioned steps to manually add a sec cert to get it working just right?
I really want my exchange account on my WP7, sucks trying to be on the phone and not be able to download attachments cause you are talking on the phone that gets the email.
Any help would be great!
Did you mean to include a URL or two in there? Anyhow, setting up WP7 to work with Exchange should be pretty easy, although I'm not sure it will do EAP with anything older than 2007 (though IMAP on older servers will work fine). Both of my phone's synced Exchange accounts were set up easily and automatically by just telling it to add the email address; it found the servers and automatically configured the accounts.

other co-workers have their iphone's working just fine. I will get a hold of one and see if any settings in there make it work.
but again i got it setup on my android phone without much issue and those same settings won't work on my WP7. it errors about the cert.
as stated I can click the lock and view the cert from web access but how do I email it to myself? i don't see a export option.
lastly, they block any IP but intranet IPs to access the mail.companydomain.com so the cert from there may not even help?!?!?
to access mail from home/laptop i have outlook setup so no need to access via the web.
any help you can give to get this working would be great!! and yes IT won't give my squat.
Have you tried manual setup. That's what mine requires. I put in my email address and password but it never gets it. I then click on manual and add
Login name: whatdoyaknow
Domain: ad.xxx.com (actually mine is more complex than that, but start with ad.)
Server: exchange.xxx.com (again more complex)
I need certificates for most things, but this seems to work ok.
Actually I still have problems getting WM6.5 to connect, but WP7 goes ok with the above.
Microsoft updated their protocol making the ones on our devices obsolete and therefore mail doesn't sync anymore (Exchange Active Sync).
This is what was said by a Microsoft Answers Forum Mod:
As with many things, Hotmail too is evolving to accommodate more recent version of EAS. Please keep in mind that in order to have complete support and additional improved feature and technology capable on the device, older protocol sometimes become outdated.
There are two components in successful EAS synch. One is server side code to communicate and synch properly from 3 different services (Hotmail, calendar, and Contacts (people)); and the other is client application.
Sometimes this are cooperation and collaboration of multiple parties (the corporation who “licensed technology” vs. actually coded the application). Some of the older application would be in need to update in order to work effectively.
When server side protocol updates, incompatible clients would suffer. Unless updates on client application were made, it would be in need to force down the protocol to be compatible with older communication protocol.

Basically the issue seems to be with the m.hotmail.com server, because pop3 works fine.
One of the tips which worked for me in getting back Mail to sync was:
Log into the hotmail account on a PC. Look at the web address. Find the 3 letters and add it to ur phone's incoming server setting. Should be one of the following: snt-m, dub-m or bay-m

So instead of the usual hotmail.com or m.hotmail.com in the server field, I tried bay-m.hotmail.com (bay is the 3 letter word appearing on the browser address bar for my account), and yes it started syncing as before!
Let me know if you have any other fixes.
Also I have the Mail app behaving abnormally, causing a lot of battery drain and not letting the phone into deep sleep.
I will see if this was an issue relating to Microsoft protocols as well.
Thanks everyone for your replies
Same issue here on HTC One X , if you install the hotmail app you will get a message that states that there is a certificate error. If I find a solution I'll post it here
Hmmm...I flashed HyperNonSense v3.1 last night, then flashed GAPPS invertedemail.apk. Now I can't get the email app to login to my Hotmail account.
I have tried using both automatic, and manual setup (selecting the ingoing/outgoing settings recommended on almost every google result page). But nothing seems to work!
Has something changed at Hotmail's end in the past month or so? (which is when I last flashed an update on my Sensation).

Sorry for the late response, but I wasn't subscribed to new replies to the thread automatically, so I didn't get notified of new replies.

For error in certificate I think you need a patched mail app with security disabled, so that it works without checking for the certificate.
