Apps using GPS

Hi Guys
I've had my HD2 for about a month now ...love the phone, hate the availability of apps...
I was wondering, do you know of any really good apps that use the inbuilt GPS. Something like the "Around Me" iPhone app that gives you an idea of things around you using GPS location?
I really wanna juice up my phone with fun stuff without having to pay the ransom demanded by windows marketplace...
Any suggestions would be appreciated

That looks nice but I cant find it anyway. Just installed one and it was just a small update to the old one.
EDIT: OH i just poped up at the top of openmarket... doh.

The best atm is google maps. next2me and aloqa have not enoght information.
i hope it is getting better.

This is the Sprint Telenav.

Opinions on this vs Google Nav? I've been using Google Nav since day 1 and have never tried Sprint lol. :/ Am I missing out, or should I just stick with the big G? lol.

I used google too but then I heard that sprint is better... and it is.

I think google navigation is way better....I used to use sprint navigation and when I got my Evo I haven't used sprint navigation since....google is much more real time vs Sprint navigation....alot of the times it would tell u to make a turn after u have already passed it...google maps it just on point....the only thing I miss is the fact that Sprint let's u know in advance if there will be a delay in traffic....other than that....Sprint nav. Could kiss my a$$.....lol....so I say stay with the big G...

google does everything sprint does and they update it way more then sprint does

fact is telenav is the best nav. now, what program thats using telenav is a different story.
for me its faster to find and get directions via google maps than it is sprint nav.

anyone have the 6.2 version ?

Google nav in my opinion is better. Wish i could use different voices tho like darth vader maybe

Personally I think the Sprint App is much better than the Google App as far as directions. The Google App may look better but that is a personal preference.
I've found that with Google, directions can get really screwy and send you a way you would never go if you were/are familiar with the area. The biggest problem I have with the Google version is that once you get outside of larger metro areas the actual maps are not as accurate. I don't know the source of the maps but I have found that Google has many more "paper" streets. Paper streets are street that do not physically exist. At some point design plans were approved but the road was never constructed. Unless you like offroading, it gets really annoying when it tells you to turn but there isn't a road!
It's easy to choose what app you like better as they can both be run at the same time. You can't make both of them show up on the screen at the same time but you can switch between the 2 by swiping down the task bar. Give that a try and see which one is better for where you live.

I prefer Google nav. It is accurate in my area, and it seems to integrate into the system better. When I get a calendar invite, p.o., or any kind of addy in Outlook, I copy, open up my iGoogle home page, paste it into the map widget, and the highlight the star. When I get in the car its on my phone. With Telenav you have to log onto thier website and add the address manually. You can still copy/paste but you have to go back and forth first copying the street address, then the city/state/zip, and then give it a label. If I have a meeting at XYZ mall - 7777 anyroad anytown, usa 77777 I can copy/paste the whole thing into maps and it will show up on my phone labeled with the phone number, mall hours, the ability to search for a restaurant/hotel nearby, etc.

I hear you...in the end it comes down to what your preference is...some of us like Google (like myself) some of us like Sprint Nav......they both have their pros and cons...I have both install just incase one gives me a wrong address...but never use sprint...since google hasnt let me down yet...lol

Anybody running CM7 have issues installing this? I'm running RC1 and unzipped the .7z packaged on my computer and transferred the .apk to my phone. Just keep getting the "application not installed" message.

I like them both.
telenav is cool is because it saves the no toll/hov/traffic option, the three route options come up before you start, it reroutes around traffic, and the voice is better (except for the few random streets in that weird voice.
Google navigation has the advantage of being integrated with other apps better, and it looks better. It also doesn't repeat the same upcoming direction an annoying amount of times like telenav.
Question - has telenav ever told you tour destination was in the middle of a freeway? Google navigation has done that to me more than a few times.

Now that we have a new TELENAV version for SPRINT I saw someone say you need the premium version @ $4.99 a moth for it to do traffic routing? I dont see that listed as a premium feature... is anyone paying for the premium features and is it worth it? what exactly do you get (anything different that what you see when you click GET PREMIUM??)

Google Navigation works best for me. I especially like the voice commands.

Yeah, the gmaps navigation is awesome for me (if I don't install that tts/voice w/e thing... then it sounds like crap!)
I also like Navigon!

I have tested most of them.

I settled for Navigon, and am very pleased.
Sygic is also a very good option, but in my hometown Sygic did fail me a couple of times in navigation, adding a couple of detours instead of quickest route, and telling me to drive the wrong way in a one way street.

The best thing would be to get downloadable full offline maps for Google maps that you just copy/paste in the cache folder, but still nothing!
Garmin is the only GPS maker who has maps for my country Lebanon but they didn't build an Android app yet

If used in the US then yes, google nav would be the best choice price wise.
I also have navigon and with the recent update to the UI, it's a bit better. However, I have come across that the maps with navigon aren't as updated as with google. I am in TX and we have highways all over the friggin place. So yes we need correct maps.
I have seen the subaru with the mounted google camera here about 3 months ago for a few weeks straight on my way to work. So I know they update the maps eventually! LOL

Offline GPS Navigation

First before we get started, there's always that one guy who points out that you can tether your phone. Yes we all know this, there are many reasons for not doing this so lets discuss what works and where it works since we cover alot of different regions.
So now with a new tablet in hand I want to have the ability to use it for as many uses as possible. And as anyone who has tried to get directions on their phone and found they had no data signal will tell you, cached maps can be a life saver. Getting a good offline navigation to work and work properly can be amazingly simple in alot of cases, and and others dreadfully annoying. What do you use and why? And, just as importantly, what don't you use and why?
Sygic Navigation (Free) (EDIT- ONLY A 14 DAY TRIAL...BOOO) This one works pretty well for me. I've had issues before getting it to download map data becasue it said my external SD was full when it wasn't (local SD was). Would be nice to be prompted with "Destination full, would you like to choose the destination?" so I can point it at the proper SD. Most likely caused by the particular rom I was using. I havn't used it for any real travel yet.
NavFree (Free in US) I used this one awhile ago with pretty good results. It looks like it's gotton some updates, not sure what "crowd powered" means and if its useful, but I'll probably give it a try, looks promising.
GPS CoPilot This one seems to have alot of fans too, but a quick reading of the descriptions says that for a premium experience, you can upgrade and get voice navigation and turn by turn directions.
Google Nav, by far my favorite nav app, has been teasing with mention of supporting this soon, but to my knowledge has yet to release this feature. They only allow you to cache routes, not download entire map data. Rumor has it that with JB will come some cool new indoor mapping and other great map/nav features.
If you use offline navigation, what works for you?

I've been using Sygic for about 1.5 years now and it has been a good exerience. Allows for walking guidance as well -- although I understand that would not come in particularly handy with a 10" tablet in your hands. Maps are free, whereas where I live (the Netherlands), the more popular option, TomTom, only provides paid maps (which are not even that much better).

I believe Sygic uses TomTom maps does it not? Atleast that's what the description states.

I believe they indeed share the same map sources, but TomTom makes you pay for every new map, whereas with Sygic, you can use the downloader to get them for free. This comes in particularly handy when you travel abroad on a vacation or for work, because you can easily get the local map on your device.

I tried Sygic yesterday on my TF700 and it kept locking up. It was the trial version from Play store.
Does someone have it working on this tablet?

How far did you get? Were you able to launch the app and download the map packs?

I have this issue as well. Can it be the OpenGL drivers?
Mostly hangs when zooming and panning.

Sygic worked fine, but I in installed it because it was a 14 day trial bs

I used NavFree US on my way to work today. I take an ungodly combination of back roads and restricted access govt roads and it tracked just fine and occasionally told me to turn onto a road that never exsisted, but considering the conditions that's no reason to complain. I think NavFree is the one to stick with.

I use Navigon on my phone, works flawlessly no issues at all. I haven't tried it on my infinity and not looking to because i wont be needing navigation on it. Also by the looks of it your looking for a free app.

Well, so much for Sygic. I can confirm it borks out when zooming in on the map.

The app installed and downloaded the maps fine.
When I selected map? from the main menu the screen when blank. I was able to exit without any problems.

I didnt have any installation issues, I hade a "this aint free" issue. The free app, as far as aI can tell, is only free for 14 days.
On the NavFree side of things, I've been playing with it on and off the past couple days and pretty impressed with it. This this is the app I've been looking for.

Google maps let you make a pretty large area available for offline viewing. Works really well too. Not going to have satellite viewing, but route guidance is good. Just open Google Maps and then click on the menu in the tops right corner and then click make available off line. From there you can drag a square anywhere on the map up to like 75 square miles, good for local navigation but not so hot if you're planning on traveling across country.
It's a great free option for anyone wanting local nav offline.

I believe we're limited to 10 off line maps (about 50 mgs each).
GPS will show your location but with no layers, navigation, or directions.
You can get directions while data is available and 'save' them for later.
It took 2 off line maps to cover all of Puerto Rico.

I tried this before and it was an epic fail. I love everything Google, and but caching just doesn't cut it right now. If they ever get around to actually following through with making maps downloadable I'll be stoked.

Did you try this recently? This Maps are now downloadable offline, as AspenMan stated.
According to this article, the #s are 6 maps savable, each 80MB.

Last I heard they were cache only, not downloadable. I tried a month or so ago, so this is new to me. Will give it a try tonight and see. Not sure if 6 maps will cut it for travel though, but may be a good backup for local maps and destination maps as the google maps tend to be more recent and accurate. NavFree for example didn't have my friends house whos neighborhood is a couple years old.

My wife and are are headed to New Orleans this week (From STL).
Today, just for a test, I took out my note and tried the GPS. I was under the assumption that maps would load, and the GPS would give us location. I was wrong. It seems you have to do available offline in Google Maps.
The problem is, it only lets me capture a VERY small section of the map.
Are there other map applications that I could use with the GPS for this trip that are available offline?

Open Street Maps
Look for Open Street Maps based mapping apps in the Play Store. They use offline maps.

Get navfree usa. Its free. Download state maps. Offline route calculation. No crashes on note 10.1

you can capture multiple small sections and they'll be under "my places". since i haven't tested it on a trip that crosses multiple sections i'm not sure how seamless it works across them.

First, I don't know if you noticed but the offline mode capture area can be adjusted. Use the two finger zoom method to zoom out to capture more in one shot. Your maximum capture area is limited to 86 MB. From my experience this allows a fairly large area. About 60 miles wide. Just remember while the maps will work you will need connectivity if you want navigation to work.
To get offline maps with navigation I definitely recommend Sygic and comes with a free trial period which will let you evaluate the app before purchasing the maps. For free options navfree is out there but I have no idea how good it is. Maybe others can comment on navigation experience with navfree.

It does . You download and keep certain areas you need. But I am not sure if you can use it with only gps on.

I've never used a GPS, so take this for what it's worth, but I downloaded NavFree USA the other day. After that, I downloaded their New York map ('cause that's where I live). It took a while to download that, but afterward worked great. This may seem ignorant, but I didn't realize you could use GPS when not connected to WiFi. But the fact that I could use this as a GPS in my car, with no data connection, was a huge surprise to me.
Of course, you don't things like current traffic issues, but having never used a GPS at all, I was pretty pleased.

OSMAnd is a good bet - you could test out with the free version, even though in theory I could build a fully working version from source, the $3-4 or so is worth auto-updating from the Market for an unrestricted version.
It does have offline routing, however I haven't really "stress tested" it for accuracy.

Try copilot. I've used it a lot and found it excellent!

CO-PILOT rocks
I have been a co-pilot user for a few years its awesome . You cant go wrong . the whole us map download from there server takes about 30-40 minutes and is about 1.3 gb if i remember correctly. You can also d/load reginal maps. I think they update them quicker and more so then anyone else..
if you have a issue they will respond back to you often same day but always within 24 hours.. you get what you pay for with co- pilot very though out app with lots of features..

What I like with Copliot is you can install it on all your android devices, maps too. I have it on my Note 10.1, 2 Acer A501's, 2 SGS3's, and my 2 galaxy tabs as well as an old HTC HD 2( beast of a phone).
And I agree that copilot is awesome but here in Oz there aren't too many map updates...
We're the land that copilot forgot.....

I use navigation systems for a living. I flew for the USAF, and fly worldwide for a major airline now. In addition to that, I've used all types of GPS apps and dedicated GPS in many cities and places around the USA and around the world.
Co-Pilot isn't a bad app, but their maps are truly horrible in many areas. I would recommend Co-Pilot only if you are familiar with the area you'll be using it. I've tried it in many cities where the maps don't even have the major freeways correct. Epic Fail.
Sygic has a decent--not great--interface and excellent maps. Plus, they have maps for locations all around the globe. HOWEVER, their POI search is horribly flawed. If you're within 25 miles of what you're looking for, it works OK. If you're looking or something further away it can be next to impossible to find it. Sygic concentrates on form over function. Fail.
Unfortunately, I have yet to try an Android based GPS Nav app that I would recommend for use in an unfamiliar area. Even Google Maps has serious issues that render it less than optimal.
I would highly recommend getting one of Garmin's GPSs from last year, like the 3750. You can pick that up on Amazon for less than $150. Or Sears has the 3790 with lifetime map updates for less than $180. Easily pocketable and works great. Use Google maps at the hotel to decide what you want to see, use a dedicated GPS to get you there.

Hi there.. Well i still have (kinda have) my a500. its a awesome device. I bought two nexus 7 tablets got it because it would fit in my purse. But ended up sending it back for a exchange because of lousy build issues. The replacement was worse. So i sent it back and waiting for a refund . Monday or tuesday im getting a NOTE 10.1 .. Bad experience with the nexus 7 i do not wanna try a 3 rd . i love my wacom intuos so thought this would fit me better.
Think i should buy. Well i have to get something my Spouse (better half so she says) tells me i do NOT get my acer back.. so im tablet less right now... boohoooooo
