Hello,
are there any apps with wide tiles? I think wide tiles (like the calender) are for MS only, but could apps with wide tiles run developer unlocked devices?
If yes, are there any such apps? I would really like a weather app such as the HTC Hub.
There's currently no API for creating wide tiles. Although our phones may be developer unlocked, we're still limiting to doing whatever it's possible to do as a legit developer using the APIs that Microsoft provide.
So... no, I'm afraid there's no way to do this. :'(

I don't know much about live tiles but you can definitly make a wide tile for your app with the current developer tools.
I just don't know what it takes to make it a live tile and whether being a live tile is restricted to small (standard size) tiles or not.

It wouldn't be restricted to the smaller tiles. HTC uses a live double-wide tile for their HUB.
So I guess a wide live tile is possible with what we have today but noone has tried it because of the inability to put it on the marketplace.
Maybe Microsoft will let us create wide tiles for marketplace apps in the future.
Anyway, I know that the HTC Hub app has been hacked to run on all WP7 devices, but this does not include the live tile feature right?
AFAIK the ability to use wide tiles has been restricted to Microsoft and OEMs only. No word on whether MS will relax that policy or not, but for the time being third party developers cannot utilize wide tiles.

Correct.
@ OP there are no apps with wide tiles. Only stock tiles like Pictures, Calendar, etc. and Manufacturer Tiles/Hubs have wide tiles. You can't create them for a 3rd party application.

No you can't it will not display as a double wide tile dosnt matter about the approval process from MS its not possable using the current dev tools they do not support it. I have already tried it several times..
I just used the developer tools to create an app with a double wide tile and it shows up double wide on my phone.

I stand to be corrected changing the TemplateType to 6 will give you a double wide tile
yet another mystery solved.

LOL Of course it did not take me 3 hours to do so I just reused an app I had built some time ago and changed "TemplateType5" to "TemplateType6" both times in the WMAppManifest.xml (like @rruffman said).
Other Templates (e.g. TemplateType4) are also usable but again, MS will not approve them.
cool. what is template 4?
I don't know exactly I justed wanted to say that TemplateType5 & 6 are not the only ones.
The other TemplateTypes are also used by Microsoft for example in the Contacts Hub (with 9 pictures) or in the phone/SMS/Email (with the number next to the icon) tile.
I once found a list of all these templates and what one could do with them, but I can't find it at the moment.

Yep I even see the Calander one all the templates are in ShellTokens.xsd.. nice to put the double wide tiles but they cant be updated via the push notification tried several times no go.. they seem to be checking not only the size of the file but also the height and width so if you send a double wide tile it will not go through and they remove the notification channel from the app. you have to get a new channel.

The MS app would be perfect, but the tile doesn't update...
Requirements:
Automatic location updating at a reasonable or configurable interval
Displays location, current temp, and current conditions icon on its tile
Preferred additional:
Wide tile with upcoming days forecast (apparently third party apps can't use wide tiles though)
High/low/precipitation displayed on the tile
Allows adding other locations in the app screen so I can have current, home, work, etc listed.
I've tried the MS app (closest, but has a static tile), weather channel, weatherbug, and a couple of others I can't remember. But I can't find a single one that meets the two requirements. Is there one I'm missing?
Edit: apparently the HTC hub does this, but I have an LG quantum and don't think it will run

An app can't update your location until you open it up. It would be nice, but that capability isn't there. Perhaps it'll be possible when we get multitasking.
The app that fits most of what you want is the Weather Channel, I think.

You sure? Its tile doesn't update, and it doesn't automatically update its location. Weatherbug does the former, MS weather does the latter.
Weather Channel does have an updating live tile, it just sometimes takes awhile for that first update after installation.
I use Weatherbug, but you have to manually enter the location. You can maintain a list of multiple locations to switch between, though.

I should clarify, though, that it might not update unless you open it. But it will show the current temp, etc., eventually.
I use an app just called weather widget. It beats the weather channel and that accu junk... and when i click it i get the full 5 day forcadt and a refresh incase it doesnt auto update... which it does usually

Weather channel updates tile.
Sometimes with delay.
As a fellow Quantum owner, I can speak to the weather channel working quite well. The only problems though:
-seems dodgy on location. I live in Windsor, and it can "find" me in surrounding small towns, but can't actually find Windsor. So I have to use Detroit as a locator (not a big deal, I live close enough that it's the same weather pattern)
-sometimes there's a delay between changing from daytime to nighttime (the colour of the tile changes)
Other than that, I tried weatherbug before this one, and weather channel is much better.
I've tried them all and World Weather is the most efficient.
Live tile updates work well. Location based weather also works well.
Time interval can be set at different frequencies to save data.
This app has all the required features

Well you are not the first that requests something like this and believe me back in the days we had some very good ideas, but it turned out, that the performance went down drasticly or it didnt work at all.
So if you dont want to use something like a launcher or anything like that you will have to find a developer somewhere that will create that for you, but I wouldnt be to enthusiastic about finding one, because I dont think there is someone that can write that sort of thing
But for the launcher or maybe an already existing app, backlashsid is right. Do some searching and maybe you will find something.

I'm currently using QuickPic as my slideshow program, but the one thing I find is that the image don't show up 'full' screen, and I mean by hiding the bottom taskbar. Are there ANY programs out there will can do this (hide the bottom taskbar) and show images at full res of the tablet?
I'm really interested in this, too. Even some of the office programs like Polaris or Quick Office don't seem to have a way to view slideshows (like PowerPoint presentations) in a way that completely fills the 1280*800 screen.
Don't think it's possible. Probably something hard coded into Honeycomb because of the lack of hardware keys, but I could be wrong.
I have an idea how it could be helped. But I don't have time to write an app that does that - so maybe someone will. The idea is simple: rotate the screen to portrait, but show everything in landscape. That way you have nice 1200x800 screen resolution (because the stupid status bar in on the right, not at the bottom).
Also if you can - star this issue in Android bug tracker: http://code.google.com/p/android/is...=4&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
And this one maybe too: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=15408 (but it's closed so probably noone from Google reads it).

THIS IS THE GAME CHANGER!
This app is made for the devices which do not have the brightness adjustment slider in the notification panel. This app brings a similar slider to the notification panel in the form of a notification. Brightness Slider Control aims to mimic the functionality of those sliders/controllers found in Samsung, Motorola, Nexus and other devices and delivers it to those devices which do not have this functionality e.g HTC phones.
But due to some technical limitations imposed by Android OS, it is not possible to mimic the exact behavior of sliding. So in this app we can "touch" the slider panel to change brightness but we cannot "slide" it. The default behavior of every ordinary notification is that the user dismisses it by sliding to right or left. We cannot replace this functionality with our own. So unless Android allows it, we can only use the "touch" gesture.
You are strongly encouraged to report any issue and submit your precious suggestions on this thread.

I'll hopefully upload an update tomorrow which should fix this problem by asking permission before installation like on pre marshmallow devices. And maybe I'll also manage to give option to hide notification icon.

I have just uploaded another update of this app to the play store. This update mainly focuses on giving the users a way to send me a 'coffee' aka donations. Since this app has been brought to the users free of cost, and that too, without cheap advertisements; I think that will be a good way for happy users to show their appreciation at their own will.
It can be downloaded from the Play Store:

That is right, but a slider doesn't need to be as tall as a notification in my opinion. Maybe the height of Oreo's collapsed notifications would make sense.

Android N is still in preview stage and I am trying to reach a larger number of users to better understand how everything works and to find ideas, suggestions, bugs and all those things that can help me build a better app.
Your time is appreciated. Thank you

I'm loving this app so far. The UI and animations are fantastic, and it's hella-easy to use.
Is it possible to add more than one application tile? I've got a handful of apps I regularly need to use while in other apps (2FA apps, password managers, calculator, etc), and I'd really love to have a tile for each of them. Alternatively, it would be good if there was a "Show favorite apps" Action option in addition to the "Show all installed apps" and "Open selected app" ones.
Even further, any chance for the Weather tile to display temperature and condition icon in the tile itself rather than just being a shortcut to a floating window? Feel free to tell me "no, not possible."
Thanks again for a very cool app!

I'm loving this app so far. The UI and animations are fantastic, and it's hella-easy to use.
Is it possible to add more than one application tile? Thank you.
Yes I can add an option for a list of selected apps.
Yes I could add a logic where the weather tile would display temperature and condition as a summary but imho that would clutter the tile. And should that be triggered after the on click event on the tile or when the tile gets focused? You see, those are some of the same questions I've asked myself while developing the app and I ended up with a dialog. The documentation about the tiles explicit says that tiles should perform action more than being static placeholder. Please let me know what you think
Hi,
Thanks for the app !
Play store says your devices is not compatible, but my Nexus is running NPD90G :/
Oh and one more thing I wanna point out is that this code is used (not by me) qju72e6sqkqxrrm22wkucmb
Have a nice day
Awesome ! I used this one : dtw6u1k3fz1nv0cx6d6l0p9 thanks a lot !

I was kind of picturing a condition icon with just the temperature below it (kind of like the existing battery or signal tiles), which could be periodically updated on a set interval. Keep the tap action, though, to pop up the dialog for additional information.
Of course, going that route may require devoting more effort to the weather piece than the rest of the app. It doesn't need to become another weather app, I just thought it would be nice if that tile could convey some amount of useful information on its own.
Hmm... Would Tasker integration be possible? Maybe you could provide the connection between Tasker and the tiles API, and then the user could create their own set of icons, text, and actions to suit their own needs. I know building that framework wouldn't necessarily be easy, but it might offload some of my particular requests.
There is a free app that does this already and works on 6.0 though? Custom quick settings
What makes your app different/better?

Tiles uses the android n specific tiles API, the other doesn't.

So is this like an official, documented API versus a bit of a hack that was just being tested out on M?
I know I used that other app for a little bit but kept running into stability issues with it.
Used code: 2c8p3u61nfw8dmlpv7v6dld
App works splendidly on Shamu, thank you so much for this, really dig the application tile, think it's time to finally retire omniswitch.

Tiles makes use of the new quick settings tiles API made available starting android n. The other app uses the ability on M to add a broadcast tile. Since it's a frameworks API, all events, behaviours, callbacks... are all handled by the android system

Hi guys, how's your experience so far as far as regarding stability, performance, logic and responsiveness?
By my measuring, testing and debugging, the app should have effects close to minimal on system battery and performance being the API core part of the os.
Since it's a very new thing available starting android N I wanted to make sure everything is working as intended. Your experience matters to me so that if you have the time please let me know what your is and that would be great. Also, play store comments and reviews are there best way to thank me for the app if you are enjoying it.
Thanks
