(Q) question for devs - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm fairly new to rooting and modding so if I pull an app from a diffent rom could I compress it to a zip and flash it in recovery? Thanks for helping if you reply.

You could do that if you created a proper folder hierarchy and an update script, but is really overkill for one app. You should probably just push it via adb, or use the terminal to copy it from your sd card to the desired folder.

HoneyComb Boot Animation

I'm not sure if this has been posted here and I'm not taking credit, all I'm doing is bringing this over from AC
Boot zip(place in system/customize/resource folder) using root explorer or something similar.
Using CM roms, place zip in system/media - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NMC0ZHLC
DON'T FORGET, IF YOU'RE MOVING THE ZIP, TO ALSO RENAME OR MOVE WHATEVER BOOTANIMATION ZIP YOU ARE CURRENTLY RUNNING
Enjoy!
EDIT Removed the link for the flashable zip since people are saying it's not working. Again, this is not my work and I simply moved the bootanimation zip using root explorer. It's very simple.
Thank you ill flash it right now
Let's take a look...
Thanks for posting, but this really isn't anything new. I've seen this boot animation on several ROMs before.
animations on video please? somewere on youtube haha
Anyone try it on the latest cm7 nightly yet?
Sent from my CM7 Supersonic
Running stock boot animation and it didn't work for me flashing the zip.
Yeah, flashing the zip didn't work for me either on CM7 Nightly #6.
Edit: dropping the bootanimation.zip into system/media did though.

Sorry, I should have added that in the OP as far as using this with CM.
I'm actually trying to figure out what sound animation might work well with this....Anyone have ideas?
Can anyone make this flashable zip work? I'd like this.

You don't flash it, you replace your current bootanimation.zip with it

You have to use an app like root explorer or adb because you are replacing protected system files. You wont be able to just copy and paste through windows.

::boot animations::shut down animations::tutorials for both::

With permission from the very gifted grafix man TonicAcid from the vibrant Forum. Here are some already made Boot/Shutdown animations.
Plus a tutorial to help create your own
Click link to be taken to his thread

Understand that these files are set up to be flashed with CWM which we do not have. They have to be Non- flashable and moved using Root Explorer or similar app.
I am awaiting a reply from TonicAcid that will tell me what needs to be removed from CWM version to make them work right for us.
(Edit) confirmed: we can pull the bootanimation file from the flashable files and push them with root explorer or something that does the samething.
If you create any Non-Flashable Boots post them for others if you like:
Awesome, I found quite a few I like here

thx for the info, im a n00b at this but will try
so all you have to do is just rename it to bootanimation.zip and push it to system/data?

Yep that's all you gotta do. Make sure you delete the samsungboot and the samsungbootloop files in /system/media

I had these running with 2.1uv kernel, but now with 3.1uv they don't want to take.

3.1uv kernel
removed the boot and bootloop samsung files, copied the bootanimation.zip to /system/media and i get no animation at all....
used to work when i was running 2.1uv. the original galaxy s animations work fine, but not bootanimation.zip...
any advice?
I use an app called bootanimation utility and it works fine.
You can import your own, or choose from some downloads. I currently have a cm7 one.

then you're pushing it to the wrong place. you place bootanimation.zip to system/media. shutdown sound goes in system/media/audo/ui. shutdown folder goes in system/media/video.

hmm....so....
you downloaded an animation from this link, right?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1053250
when you download the file, it comes in a zip file. open the zip file and you should notice a system folder. open that system folder and open the media folder within it. you should see a bootanimation.zip. that file is the one you are copying to system/media on your phone, right?
i know some people simply download the file and rename it to bootanimation.zip. they are actually renaming the cwm flashable file and not pushing the correct zip. you do not have to rename anything during this process. i would say to try and flash it, but for some reason, it never works for me, but you are more than welcome to try and flash it yourself. the above method is just in case that doesnt work.

(Q) Installer script

Good morning everyone..
I, I'm sure like many of you, am constantly changing roms and tinkering with my phone.
I am getting to the point that I don't want to do it anymore because of all the work of re-installing all my apps...
I have created a folder on my sdcard that i put all my installers into and usually just run through that to install everything...
What I was wondering is would it be possible to create a script, put it in my directory, launch it through terminal and it will install any/all apk's in that folder?
Many thanks in advance for your help!
Sent from my DoubleShot Lite using xda premium
well you can set it to tranfer all the apks into /data/app. Though im not sure if your phone will actually view them as installed. Otherwise make a script that pushes them with the *.apk wild card.
TitaniumBackup anyone?
Yup! Titanium backup is the way to go.
I recommend the Pro version though, It does everything automatically without needing user input.
Actually I found this at the market:
https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.infolife.installer
It is a sdcard batch installer... Was exactly what I was looking for...

Btw, thank you everyone for your thoughts on this.

Flashable Gapps

Howdy,
I was wondering how hard it would be to make my own flashable gapps and other apps for myself to flash after a clean wipe. So I was basically wondering if there's a zip creator for dummies topic out there somewhere.
Thanks for your help,
Young

Search for the ace think tank thread over the dhd general section. Start reading from page 30 onwards. I can't remember if I posted the link for such an app or not in one of the pages. If you reach page 42 then I didn't. First check the link section in the third post and there is a random link section link in the second post.
Your other option is to do the search at xda tv. That's where I accidentally found it.

You need to make a zip with the system/app and meta-inf. In the meta-inf is an updater-script and update-binary. The updater-script is where you write commands. This tells recovery what to do like to mount /system and push the /system/app and containing apks.
For example:
"run_program("/sbin/busybox", "mount", "/system");"
"package_extract_dir("system", "/system");"
"unmount("/system");"
Or you can mount with this command if you don't have /sbin/busybox in directory.
"mount("ext3", "EMMC", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p25", "/system");"
(minus quotations on each end)
Anything contained in the system folder like other folders and their contents will be copied where necessary.
There are definitely more variations of these commands as well for different Rom configurations.
You can get more complex with setting permissions and symlinks but this is a good starting point.
Best way is to just pull apart a few different zips and see what commands do what. You will start to see how it works. It's pretty easy really. There are plenty if guides around as well. Just search and study til you are comfortable writing your own.

App2zip is one of the apps I used to use to zip up apps...there are quite a few other apps, do similar things as well...

[Q] Adding packages into flashable zips?

This may seem like a dumb question, but I don't know and I can't find the answer, so I'm going to ask:
If I put an apk into a flashable zip (I know how to add one to an existing zip, that's not the issue) but that app already exists in the ROM, will the new app overwrite the existing one?
For example, add an Apollo apk into a gapps flashable zip (or one that just flashes an inverted market, or something like that) and flash it over a CM10 install. In that instance, will it overwrite the existing app?
How can I set apk permissions from within a zip, or is that important to do?
Another question is: How do I create my own flashable zips? Is there a guide somewhere?
Google turned up quite a few guides to create flash able zips. Even one featured on xda from Sept 1.
Just google "create flashable zips Android"
Cheers!

Thanks. I'll admit not searching for that particular part of my question before submitting it. I just typed it on the fly when I was typing up the rest of the post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610121
Looks the closest to what you need. I may create a script to wipe / update my personal data every time I flash a ROM.
Thanks for the bread crumb!

For flash able zips use App2Zip from the Play store. Works perfectly and very easy.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
I think I figured out the bulk of my question. Yes, adding an Apollo apk to a flashable zip will overwrite the app already in /system/app, which is what I wanted.
Thanks to all who suggested ways to create my own zips.
