Going to throw out some questions to see if there is any interest in the community for an idea I had. I am considering hosting ROM files on my dedicated server to create a central resource for downloads here at XDA. My first question is whether the wireless carriers and handset manufacturers would allow these downloads to be hosted in such a manner, or would they send a cease and desist? I would assume since Android is an open source platform, they would allow it? Secondly, would there be interest from the community in having a central resource for downloading files that is fast, reliable, and easy to navigate? Any feedback would be great.

It isn't illegal to host roms on a site, but there is already a place that does this called crackflashers I believe, although most devs use there own host.
I see their web page now that you point it out. Seems there selection is not too extensive, and a little dated as well.
I don't create roms but really don't mind the current setup (forums) so not only can I get the rom but also find help and ask for help in the same place as everyone for that specific rom. But those are just my thoughts I'm sure someone may have a reason for it.
Also no ISP is going to issue a cease and dessist for this kind of project. You have a liscense to all the work as it is open source.

I was wondering the same thing as I will soon have unlimited usage with bandwidth. Then again I have no idea what kind of transfer speeds can be obtained either. Time to find out I guess.

Hey guys,
Starting a new section on the site and want to get XDA User's and Dev's opinions on the matter.
Head over to the site for info:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/02/18/de...veloper-pages-on-theunlockr-com-beta-testing/
Think it could be a great resource for rom junkies and devs alike (and a nice compliment to XDA for that matter).
Thanks for your time guys!
I really am not trying to hijack your thread but this sounds like the OpenRelease project we are already working on and is almost done...
This is gonna be yet another source for people to check...
If we fragment any more, doing the OpenRelease project will be pointless.
No it is different. Our site is not for a repository of ROMs (although the site has that already), it is for Developers to show off all of their work in one location. It's more of a mini blog for developers, they can still use our mini blog for releasing whatever they want and easily head to your page to post the ROM in your repository without much effort, we CAN coexist lol
Actually I just thought, our two projects might be able to help each other and benefit the community further...
PM'd you, Simon.
I apologize in advance if this isn't allowed, but I wanted to open the doors all ROM developers (any anyone else ) to our Evo forum (htcevoforum.net). We just setup a developer section, and if you PM with your Rom information I will be sure to add a section within the Developer forum for it.
We are looking to get the most out of our Evo's, and the users there would be very interested in the Roms developed here. Feel free to include your paypal info below your thread for donations! We look forward to seeing you there!
Again, apologies if this sort of things isnt accept (mods feel free to delete if so).

will you host the files?
I dont mind hosting the files, unless for some reason they are considered against HTC/Android terms of service?
From a bandwidth/server resource standpoint hosting them is no problem on my end.
Hosting
I have a server and can host files on ROMs if anybody needs it.

I also have a server.. 1TB at that.. Willing to give out love.. LOL
Unlimited bandwidth/disk space. Just PM me if you need a file uploaded.
Kinda feel like the tread derailed a bit
Again, I would love to host them at our forum, which would be ideal for anyone already there or looking for Evo information. Thanks again!
I have unlimited hosting if needed... Please 2.2 rom Please
1TB of b\w on a gigabit port at SoftLayer, beat that
Anyway, looking forward to whatever ROMs/enhancements that everyone comes out with. 2.2 stuff in particular.
Heck, I might be able to help with some coding if needed, though my knowledge of Android programming is very basic.
Why don't you people stop trying to throw him out of his own idea?
He had it first, find something else to do.
Hey there xda-dwellers. I hope I've chosen the correct forum for this question.
I've always wondered - whenever I go to download a new ROM for whatever phone I have at the time, ROMs are always hosted on Megaupload / Rapidshare (or something along those lines). Why?
Is it because most developers lack the resources to push out enough bandwidth to satisfy downloaders such as myself? It it more convenient to use these sites? Or does it have something to do with legal issues?
Just trying to think of a way I can give back to the community. If it's out of a lack of bandwidth, I may be able to help.
Thanks!
Most devs don't have their own servers or websites not all are Megaupload. Also some just use it as another way to push it out if its super popular. Least thats what I have viewed.

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Its rather that even if they have the servers why should they use them to distribute 100MB ROM files to thousands of peoples, they don't sell the ROMs, they offer them for free, no income from that...
So they would have to pay money for bandwidth so people can download their free ROMs...
Maybe they just aren't aware of the better alternatives like minus.com or Google Docs.
I'd love to hear from a developer on this. Thanks for the replies, guys.
I've got the resources to offer the storage and bandwidth for free to developers. Would any developers be interested or actually use this? I have a vision for creating a central location where developers can post their ROMs for quick, direct downloads from a dedicated server.
I just need to get some people on board and involved. I think it'd be a great thing for the community, personally, but I want to hear the community's opinion before I put hours of work into it.
Again, thanks guys!
Interesting treat I have always wander the same thing lol

Anyone figured a way to block bloglovin.com from ripping threads from xda ?
How do you propose blocking someone from copying data on a public website?

for example this :
HTML:
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
<!--
function breakout_of_frame()
{
// see http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/framebreak.shtml
// for an explanation of this script and how to use it on your
// own website
if (top.location != location) {
top.location.href = document.location.href ;
}
}
-->
</script>
anywhere inside [head] [/head] XDA Master page
so the page cannot be frames as bloglovin does
i dont mind when users make copy and post somewhere else with given credits
but i will not stand when bloglovin is making money from my work without my or anybody else's consent
And you're aware of exactly how many things that would probably break, right? Not to mention the fact that's very easy to overcome for a site bent on getting your content. They're just putting XDA in an iframe so all credits are given and everything stays intact, they're not even scraping/copying the site - what's your issue?
You put content on a public forum, it's going to get copied and passed around. It's the internet, it's a perfectly normal thing to occur on a daily basis.

issue :
bloglovin.com is making money from my (and others) work without my or anybody else's consent
it is wrong
it should not be accepted
you might not have any work posted online and thats why you cannot understand
i do it for community not for money
i dont get paid nor i'm asking to get paid
why should some rss robbing website make money from my hours/days/months/years of work ?
dont you think it would be not fair if i was to get free apples from your tree and sell them round the corner for money ?
would that not raise your attention ?
If I post something in public, I fully expect it to be copied and shared around. It's like me going out in public and shouting information about how to make apple pie, if someone then goes and makes it then shouts it out in another city - there isn't much I can or should be able to do.
I have posted work online, people have downloaded it with a YouTube downloader and shared it around - and you know what? I posted it there for people to share. It's the nature of the internet.
This forum is popular, people will repost things they find here all the time because it's public knowledge and in the public domain. Blocking iframes will just cause those admins to come here and grab the data directly instead. If you want a private forum that's hidden from non-registered users then go find one and request an invite.
Suggesting a massive site-wide change that would require developers and testing time for something that is so trivial and should be expected is wrong.
Edit: How about archive.org? https://web.archive.org/web/2014091...l/general/bloglovin-com-theft-finest-t2875132
Every post here is everywhere on the 'net.

nobody reposted anything .... its an automated money making machine ....
AS I SAID I DO NOT MIND USERS DOING IT BY HAND AND GIVING CREDITS ....
would you be happy if some band/dj took your work then started selling it ?
maybe you will buy their album/song of your work ?
and archive respects robots.txt
... bloglovin does not ...
scenario:
Code:
u made music to make people happy and posted to youtube
i robbed it and have put it on another form of media (cd in this case)
and now i'm makin money on it in uk :)
would you try to do something about it ?
YOU EITHER HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH BLOGLOVIN.COM
OR YOUR VALUES ARE REALLY OFF ...
how more plain can i put it ?
maybe the change is needed not to xda website itself
but the whole bloglovin website and their click robbing works ....
The credits are right there in the post! Its an iframe linking directly to XDA, therefore it has credits to whichever username posted it and XDA themselves - what more do you want?
I don't work for then, I'm just fed up of people attacking the values of the internet and free information. Once it's in the public domain anyone can do anything they like with the data.
Yes it's a rubbish business practise, but the positives of free information far outweigh the negatives of someone getting a few cents for an ad view.

Your Worrying is Right but not correct
Well from your side i am pretty convinced what that website is doing is bad. making money from others countless hours of working is pretty sick.
well you are even right in saying that on xda you and other developers has devoted countless hours of working tirelessly for people.
But the point with which is Google made Android was pretty simply mentioned was opensource. Because of this fact google almost leave behind NOKIA AND Apple in OS's and Phone area. Now even XDA for sure is devoted for mobile development and that is opensource too. Because of this so much development today come possible. Right from xposed to pie controls. Being a xda senior member you knows that even the kernels are developed by developers after countless hours of coding sometime. But the rules are pretty clear LINUX is open source and because of that for further development you have to put source online on repo.
so its open source until you are here in public. you can not sue anybody. if you are still worried drop a email to the administrator of that website. see if this could help. :good:
I understand this guy he won't like to let some person put XDA ( including his threads ) in a frame (iframe) with ads.
It's actually pretty wrong what they are doing but it's the true internet, internet seems fun but there are missing rules or broked rules

I think that the site admins can take some action if another site is stealing content from xda. Unfortunately, the site admins rarely come into the General forum, so I think your best bet for a response is to repost your original question here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1976627
If you can provide some links of where they have lifted your posts, that would be helpful.
OK due to an accident I have not been developing anything. However that has changed and in the next 30 days I will be setting up a development network. Here is my question.
What type of laptops should I purchase and what servers should I go with? I want this to be a real work place environment although its something that will be in a spare room.
My thought is I will be purchasing 3 laptops and from the server side a file server, back up file server, development server, and developed app server to run the applications that i have developed.
Any suggestions and links would rock thanks.
Hello,
This is a tricky question in regards to where it fits on XDA. It's only relevant to Android as (I assume) that will be the platform you will be developing for.
I would suggest the device suggestion thread but even that seems weird since the motive there is mobile device.
Feels like the best spot on the site to ask right now would be off topic. I remember seeing a PC hardware article in XDA News a while back, so makes me wonder if there will be PC forums in the future (but I don't see any when I just looked).
Hope this helps, closing the thread now to avoid any confusion from others. Thanks.
