[Q] Contact Links (Sense) vs AOSP - General Questions and Answers

One of the major drawbacks for me when switching from a Sense based rom to AOSP is that the contacts don't link well in AOSP.
It appears that AOSP only matches on "Name". So if you have John Doe in your contacts and on Facebook their name is John Do, but their emails and phones are identical it doesn't link them.
Does anyone know a good app or some sort of replacement on an AOSP based rom that can work as well as the sense based contacts/links do?

[Q] Vanilla phone.apk on skyrider 3.0

Is there anyway to patch the origional vanilla phone.apk with the contacts to skyrider3.0?
Lots of folks have tried and it just can't be made to work, as far as I know. The dialer is one of the things I hate the MOST about Sense, along with People. They'r'e the main reason I ran to an AOSP ROM as soon as there was a relatively stable one.

[Q] Sense-Like Contacts

I'm currently using Gingerbread Sense Rom for my DHD, however the only reason I use it is for the Facebook integration, the style of the message app is nice but not dissimilar to the stock app and the rest is quite similar or easily replaceable.
Is there an app I'm not aware of that recreates the Sense functionality for non-Sense roms? Would rather use CM7 Nightlies but I do like the contacts and Facebook integration.
Though it us not very sense like, try "go contacts". It is miui like and actually very good
Sent from my glacier using XDA App
Truthfully the design doesn't bother me it's the Facebook integration (automatic pictures and statuses), the auto-linking contacts based on name etc
If you purchase Launcher Pro they have numerous "sense-like" widgets including one for contacts. There is also a free app on the Market called Photo Contracts widget that is similar.
........
Thanks, Colorize does a similar thing too but is there nothing that replicates just how integrated Facebook is with Sense UI? The official Facebook app itself is awful with contacts so I recall... It's nice to just have pictures automatically updates (SyncMyPix is fine but it to be done automatically without extra apps is far better!)
Hi chrisa86,
I'm totally with you. Yesterday I flashed CyanogenMod on my Desire. Coming from a sense-based ROM, specially the Contacts App is a pain. I want my nice and clear list with links and Facebook back!
I don't mind Widgets, because I'm using Launcher Pro, but the App itself.
So far, I tried Youlu, but is it more at the stock side than on the Sense side
Unfortunately, there is nothing like the Facebook integration in Sense. And the latest Gingerbread update even went back in terms of the Facebook/Android connexions.
That's the only thing I miss from Sense ROMS actually...
Yes, I just flashed Redux rom (which is very good by the way) to try gingerbread, and I'm badly missing the HTC contacts as well.
Additionally from facebook integration, there's also something missing: the ability to type a person name's directly from the dialer (aka Smart Dial : http://www.mobisleapps.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Screen-shot-2010-01-12-at-4.16.47-PM.png)
Any workarounds ?
Dialer One in the market has smart dial. You can set that as your default phone app.
Yep, I should have done more research before asking. I just realized that there are numerous alternative dialers.
However, to get back to the OP question, nothing like sense contacts (for facebook sync) at the moment, right ?

What is the Differences

If I may ask this with out being bashed I know what AOSP is but what exactly is MIUI? What are the differences between AOSP and MIUI? I love the look of some of the themes I have seen for MIUI. So if anyone has the time and/or has used them both and can give me some info on them I would appreciate it. If you guys can list the pro's and con's about them, as well as your favorite thing about them. Thank you in advance for your input and information

MIUI: MIUI is developed by Xiaomi Tech, is an aftermarket firmware for android phones based on Android Open Source Project (AOSP). It features a very modified UI that (similar to iOS) does not have an app drawer, instead all of your apps are just on the home screens. It can easily be compared to TouchWiz and iOS in some ways. The rom has additional functionality that can not be found in many roms such as sense and some AOSP roms; These include toggles in the notification bar, a new music app, a new gallery, new camera, and a "Smart Dialer" similar to Sense's. No phones come stock with MIUI accept for the Xiaomi MI-One.
AOSP: Stock, pure android. No overlays like Sense, TouchWiz, MotoBlur, etc. There are many phones that come stock with AOSP, and the most popular is the nexus line. Many (including myself) prefer AOSP because it is generally faster and simpler, the way Google intended.
My favorite part of MIUI is how it is almost like inverted android. As we all know, android 4.0's colors are black and blue, but Miui 4 has white and orange, which can be kind of refreshing.
My favorite part of AOSP is how fluid and nice it looks and feels.
Pros (AOSP):
- Fast
- Light
- Need I say more?
Cons (AOSP):
- No Gapps stock (flash them second)
- Sometimes can be missing functionality or customization
- Thats all I can think of
Pros (MIUI):
- New UI (pro for some people)
- Lots of customization and functionality
- Much more (for some)
Cons (MIUI):
- Special gapps (and no gapps stock)
- Can be CHINESE!!!
- Generally slower than AOSP
- Sense based and AOSP based versions

I'm currently loving Sense 4.0, but if you're interested in messing with roms you really should give MIUI a try. As long as you do a nandroid backup first, there's really nothing you can lose other than a little time.
As I said, I'm digging Sense for now, but on my g2x I was almost always using MIUI. Some people think its too much like iOS, but you can always install a different launcher. It has more customization options than any other type of rom that I know of. I would love to be able to use their statusbar toggles with other roms.

Stock ICS/JB Email with Conversation View?

Due to a bunch of issues I experienced with the TouchWiz email app, I recently replaced with the ICS AOSP Email/Exchange apps from this thread.
While its definitely much more stable than the original, the one feature Im missing is the conversation view the TouchWiz version has. Is there a version of the stock ICS or even JB email app that includes this?
Thanks!

Just a question about porting Sense 6-7

Hi guys,
I have question:
Why any developer doesn't ported any ROM like Sense 7 ? Beacuse I think that there are like 10 ROMs with same features and looking the same stock Android. I tested all the ROMs available and I don't found any unqiue outstanding features. Without gapps all the ROMs have the same performance and the same stock apps execpt CM but there are just stock modified with little features compard with Sense 7 or touchwiz. I know that you will say that Sense 7 has bloatware but isn't to much to slow down the phone or anything and some options from Sense 7 are useful and more beautiful apps than stock google apps like browser (heavy), or music, dialer, contacts etc... and I know that you will say why I don't make a port: the answer is simple: I don't know how. I don't have any knowledge about how porting works or anything even with tutorials.
So, I am asking if any developer/ users will be interested to install/port Sense 7 or another OEM software to our Moto G.
If this post is useless you can close and delete it
Thanks !
Here is one project that has stalled unfortunately.
