[Q] Can i flash any kernel on any rom - Thunderbolt General

or is there a match to the two?

You can only flash a Sense based kernel on a Sense based rom
You can only flash an AOSP kernel on an AOSP based rom
/end

thank you sir i would of messed that way up haha appreciate your help

and you cant flash a froyo kernel on a gingerbread ROM. so you have to make sure its the same android version. and also yes, cant use a sense kernel on a non-sense (haha) ROM.

General quick question about ROM/KERNAL

I have ICS, and i was just wondering what would happen if i installed a gingerbread ROM? and just another question with kernals, if i download a kernal are some only for ICS and some only for GB?
thankyou.
Well you can flash Gingerbread rom and kernel and you will no longer have ICS. If you wanna go back to ICS just flash any ICS rom and Kernel you will be good.

There are usually dependencies between kernEL and non kernEL code - non kernEl code is referred to as "userspace"... Typically you can't just swap a kernel meant for one version of android with another, unless the manufacturer has done a great job of abstraction. Not so in the case of most phones.
thankyou both for your replies

If you flash it using the ODIN Tar version of the ROM, you dont need to flash an additional kernel, since it's already included (Arakmar's kernel - [email protected] #Test_Version_315)..

[Q] Slim Bean 2.4 ROM and Samsung JELLYBEAN: 9.18.2012 Kernel

I'm on the Slim Bean 2.4 ROM and today loaded the KT747 Samsung JELLYBEAN: 9.18.2012 kernel using CWM Recovery. The phone does not boot. I had to reboot into CWM and load the KT747 AOSP JELLYBEAN kernel for the phone to work again.
Does anyone have the KT747 Samsung JELLYBEAN: 9.18.2012 kernel working on Slim Bean 2.4 ROM? If so, what could I be doing wrong?
Thanks.
You flashed a non AOSP kernel on an AOSP rom that's why your phone was not booting up. At least im fairly certain that's what happened. You have to be careful when flashing kernel's that there compatible with your rom. Generally AOSP kernels will always work with AOSP roms and TW kernels will work with TW roms, just make sure there both ICS or JB both the rom and kernel.
I'll make it easy
TW ICS ROM = TW ICS Kernel
TW JB ROM = TW JB Kernel
ICS AOSP ROM = ICS AOSP Kernel
JB AOSP ROM = JB AOSP Kernel
No mixing or combining

About your question, i got running on my lg thrive, which is identical in hardware to the lg phoenix; gingersnap, gingerdx, gtr, cyanogen mod 7.2,, only that ones...
Currently joban's kernel is only supported in gingerbread, even in those roms is kind of unstable...
Now, we have a new kernel from the great developer DJnoXd, it supports Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jellybean... But if you are only interested in Gingerbread, tell me and i will pm you a better method to get roms
DJnoXd kernel will work on GB also. Arjen has a kernel that will work on GB too.
joban kernel is old base band... so any p500 rom that is obb will work.

can you give me the link to the rom and kernel your useing
Do I flash the rom then the kernel right after or do I flash the rom, boot up the phone then go back into recovery to flash the kernel
Just figured out djnoxd kernel no good for gb. Found in original development here on xda
Arjens is found at androidcentral under Phoenix / thrive thread
Sorry no links .. on phone.
Flash rom. Reboot recovery. Flash kernel. Recamend full boot. Then flash gapps. But can flash gapps after kernel
iirc I just read the new kernel runs on the p500/505/509, I don't know which one is the phoenix tho
Sent from my LG-P500 using xda app-developers app
i believe that to be the new 3.0 kernel
so no one could give me links
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1587209 DJNoXD ICS and 4.1.x
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2144790 3.0 kernel by androidarmv6 team maybe ICS primarily for 4.1.x & 4.2.x
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2140930 sweetnsour i think still in beta, primarily for ICS, may work on JB
http://forums.androidcentral.com/t-...gerbread-cm-2-6-35-kernel-thrive-phoenix.html Arjens GB kernel
dont be lazy. do read the OP and make sure you know what your doing.

Is rom and kernel are same

What is difference between rom and kernel?
Is kernal included in rom.?
Can current kernal be used with new rom.
Eg- I am using ics with 3.0.15 kernal.can I use same kernal for Kitkat
The ROM and the kernel are separate things. I THINK that a kernel can be included with a ROM, but I'm not sure.
Check this out:
http://m.androidcentral.com/android-z-what-kernel
I'm not sure if you can use your current kernel with a new ROM, but someone will know. Most of the people here are really helpful.

kernel and roms are two different things.....check out on google
ROM is software like the OS stored on the phones internal storage. Generally you do not write to the ROM storage unless you are flashing (replacing the OS). When the OS has been loaded off the ROM into RAM the Kernel is the heart of the OS controlling the device.
If am not wrong. Kernel is the booting process that has no user interface and rom is the OS that you use. Kernel are use to tweak processor using some app like performance control or even rom toolbox.
thanks for reply
