App for 720p playback?

So RockPlayer has almost never failed me - would play anything I threw at it.
Last night I tried to play a video, which is a 720p AVI - approx 150MB, and it lagged like a beast.
I updated to the new "Rockplayer Lite" - same issue. Tried several different video players in the market with the same results.
Is this a hardware limitation of the SNS or Android as a whole? Or have I just not found the right app?

I've been experiencing lag/jitter in pretty much all multimedia (videos/games) since the last Gingerbread update. It's nothing horrible though. I'm not sure if I installed an app or a widget that is having an impact on my device or if something changed. It was a lot smoother before the last update for me. *shrug*

Hm it's tough to discern then I guess if I'm having an issue like you or that this particular file is just too much for the apps to handle. That's why I like Rockplayer - no need to convert anything.

If you have a pretty powerful computer and you're always on wifi or have good 3G/4G (unlimited) you could try the new Plex app and stream all your movies to your phone.

Will always lag until we can get proper video codecs implemented into android...then you can run rockplayer in hardware decoding mode and will run/look perfect
ATM you're running in software mode for anything other than mp4

Hi,
Can you please guide me on how I can implement video codec in my SNS so that I can play 720p without lagging

I used to use Rockplayer and it was pretty good, but on my SNS it barely held up while playing a 480p mkv(matrosaka) videos. I'd say try moboplayer. It's definitely better, and it even can read and display embedded subtitles if your watching a movie/show in a different language. Plus the interface is so much cleaner. And best of all, it's free in the market.
It can barely play 720p mkv and sometimes freezes, but when it does play it the video and audio are right on the mark. I haven't tried 720p avi but from what I've seen, it's harder to play mkv than it is to play avi.
Try it out.

with Rock Player you can use it to play 720p using hardware decoding.. no lag but no audio is being outputted

try mobo player, i could manage playing all HD formats without lagging.

Plex is great, plays everything but the quality is kinda disappointing :/ not as good as when played via UPnP etc.

+1 for MoboPlayer.

Rockplayer with hardware decoding solved the problem. Will try the mobplayer today

I think you should try setting the bitrates for 3g, wifi and remote wifi manually.
Here are mine, bare in mind I have a 35/35 FIOS connection.
3g= 720kbps or 1.5Mbps -depending on my connection at the time.
Remote Wifi = 2Mbps
Local Wifi = 3-5Mbps
I am on the beta team for Plex. As of right now the Auto feature is for lack of a better word DUMB.
I can watch a high bitrate 720p file over remote wifi on my Xoom and it looks nearly perfect. There are a few quality issues but nothing that kills it.
NOW if you have a file thats 720p or 480p that WILL play natively on your Nexus, you can turn on Direct Play and Direct Stream in the settings. If you have enough bandwidth to support it, the file WILL play without transcoding, thus no quality loss at all.

[Q] HD playback with no lag...?

Im trying to watch either .mp4 or .mkv but both lag in stock player and moboplayer. Anybody get this to work with zero lag?

What are the specs on the videos that you are trying to play?
Here is a vid of me using Vital Player on the transformer with a H.264 encoded MP4 and an MKV movie. No lag, no sync issues.

If the movies you're trying to watch are encoded with High profile then playback will be laggy no matter what on the TF.

So this handles 1080 but with some tweaks I'm assuming..again, I'm a new at this

For the MKV, I downloaded it was already encoded so I am not sure of its specs, but the playback quality and resolution are excellent even on my desktop's 24" HD monitors.
For the MP4 played at the beginning of the video, that was shot in 1920x1080, brought into Premiere CS5 for editing and exported through Adobe Media Encoder using H.264 at 1280x720.
There are some threads with Handbrake encoding specs on the forums as well.
When using Vital player make sure the Decode Mode settings are set to automatic. It will automatically recognize there is no hardware acceleration (as I understand is normal with the Tegra-2). It will then compensate with "software acceleration". Also in the Video Mode settings I have it set to speed over quality as the performance is better without sacrificing much of the quality to my eye.
With these settings, Vital Player should play just about any video you might download off of a torrent site. I have yet to find a video that does not play well through it. I'm not sure if other users who say it does not work for them have checked the Vital Player settings, if my videos are just not up to the elusive "high profile" they are talking about, or if I just have a rare Transformer that just works, but as you can see in the video it does work for me.

So you had to encode the mkv or mp4 before playback? So it cant just play them straight up?

I believe that nearly any video you get is going to need be encoded in some form at some time.
The MKV was more than likely encoded by someone else before I downloaded, but no further encoding was necessary on my end. The MP4 was shot on my own camera (Canon 7D recording at 1920x1080p) and needed to be edited. When you export directly from the timeline in Premiere, it must be encoded to even be usable. For sites like YouTube or Vimeo to even accept them there must be encoding. The H.264 encoding that I used is the highest setting for that type of video's purpose (HD web playback). It is different than what I would have exported for burning to Blu-Ray but is adequate for a screen the size and resolution of the Transformer's.
When I return home, I will try bringing in the raw, unedited video from the 7D (which is around 3GB for a 4 minute vid at that resolution btw) and see if Vital Player plays it back with no lag. I seriously doubt it as some average computers have a hard time playing that back without lag. Even Final Cut Pro can't import raw 7D video without a conversion (Adobe Premiere does not have this problem though). Why anyone would want to play a video of this size and resolution on a tablet is beyond me (3GB for 4mins is ridiculous in a playback form). I can't even imagine wanting to watch a full length movie in that form.
Both of these videos seriously choke in any player other than Vital Player (including Mobo, QQ, and MVideo). I couldn't play any video in my library with them or the stock player, but all of these files play just fine in Vital.

Maybe that's all I was missing for the other players (I didn't get prompted to download codecs). I'll stick with Vital Player though simply because it's already on my tablet and it works.

Ive tried lots of different players and anything i download from BitTorrent (.mkv which I convert to MP4 for my Xbox) won't play worth a damn on my transformer. They are all720p. They all lag like crazy. Can the transformer not handle this?

90% of all HD videos you download the internet are ripped from blu-ray and likely encoded with high profile h264 because that's what looks best. the tegra 2 cannot handle these files at 720 or 1080p, and thus they need to be re-encoded to main profile, which as i understand it, means a much lower bitrate (and thus worse picture).

I got all excited because of this thread...but I just gave VitalPlayer a shot on a 720p high profile x264 and it still sucks. No artifacts but the framerate is really low it seems.
In case anyone is interested I did receive this message from ASUS:
"On this issue, we have tested some of the 1080p video is playing well. We have cooperation with google and will launch android 3.1 in June to resolve the 720p and 1080p video playback problems."

i believe that is flash only, as in 720/1080 youtube streaming which is much lower quality than a high profile blu-ray rip. the problem is tegra 2, which is a year old, not supporting 720/1080p playback. it's the reason boxee box dropped tegra for an intel chip.

Mkv Streaming to Transformer ?

Just got my Transformer yesterday and overall I like it but one of the biggest issue that I found is that I cannot stream mkv files from my HTPC to it (or haven't found a way to do it).
Is there a player that supports streaming of MKVs ? Also, other than using Plex is there any other option to do streaming ?

DicePlayer can stream MKV files, on a CIFS/samba share. I suggest you try the trial.

While Dice player can't play a single MKV I've thrown at it (and I tried a LOT of different files) and is, IMO, a complete waste of money I second the CIFS mount suggestion. that's the only way I found to reliably and painlesly watch movies from my NAS.

I tried Dice player and it did not even play my AVIs so I don't know why it is regarded as such a great player.
Is there a noob friendly guide of using CIFS somewhere?

Dice player works great on my htc sensation, i can play all my hd stuff, was rather annoyed to find out that my phone can play video better than my tablet though. Apparently tegra 2 struggles with high profile h264.

DICE plays all my anime mkv's, It's by no means the perfect application but it does a good job with support for certain audio streams. I don't regret the purchase.

No problem with Dice Player playing mkv. For streaming from HTPC i use Bubble UPNP or UPNPlay but i think Bubble UPNP is more userfriendly.

I just download the two apps. Bubble is more honeycomb friendly, but it will be a paid app in september.
But, Dice Player through Bubble or Upnplay can't show the subtitle included in the mkv movie file. I have to download the mkv file in order to have the subtitle. Is there another way to do it through UPNP streaming only?

After a lot of trial and error I was able to stream mkv with the following combination
TVMoBili + Bubble + DicePlayer/Mx Player
Only with Dice player, the video does not shutter but Mx Player is the only one that shows embedded subtitles and unlike DicePlayer, I can skip ahead the video.

I use PS3 Media Server which work for ps3 and the ASUS tablet!
But MX Player (free version) is laggy when it come to play a 720p mkv video file. Dice Player is perfect with 720p file. It is a shame that Dice won't play subtitle when it play streaming videos.

Just saying. I'm watching a 720p video on my transformer right now using mxplayer and the armv7 codec for it and its running perfectly and no issues whatsoever.

Streaming wise, I use Qloud and it is awesome.

I still cannot stream MKV.DICE was lagging even for normal videos when Rockplayer was able to make it work well. Will try mxplayer.

Please remember that MKV is just a container, inside that container you can have almost any combination of video codec and audio codec. MP4 is also a container but it has a very limited range of allowed video/audio codecs, so it's much easier to support.
If you are using the Android system video decoding (The only way to get hardware accelerated playback) you will be able to play some 720p h.264 video streams. If you are just using the CPU to decode then 720p will never be smooth.
All these video players can do is try to unwrap the containers (Like MKV or AVI) and _maybe_ do soft-decoding on the audio if the android system doesn't support the audio codec (Like AC3/DTS)
If the player does full CPU decoding for the video stream you won't be able to play HD content smoothly, ever (Things that claim "Optimised for the Tegra 2 CPU" are still just doing the work on the CPU).
This means that there will _never_ be a Tegra2 Android app that can play _all_ MKV's it's simply not possible. This is why people are saying "Plays my MKVs fine" and other are saying "Won't play any of my MKVs"

After spending many frustrating hours trying to stream my mkvs, the only 100% working solution that I have found so far is to use MyCloud app an remote desktop into my HTPC. This way I not only have access to all my movies/tv shows I can play them with subtitles.
I know its not the best solution but at least it is a working one

I'm using Plex to stream movies, but I can't recall if I have tried any .mkv files. Can anyone confirm? If so, OP might want to try Plex... it's pretty slick.

Plex re-encodes on the fly so it'll play anything that the server can transcode in realtime. But the quality will be notably lower.

For SMB streaming I use ES File Explorer.
MX Player for avi's (SW).
MXP loads subtitles from the tablet.
Dice Player for mkv's (HW).

Hey everyone. I recently bought a Nexus 10, only to find out that it can't play 720p, let alone 1080p mkv video files with hardware acceleration. So I've been looking into using the TF700 for playing video files shared over my local network. Does anyone have any experience with this? How does the TF700 handle 1080p mkv files? I've used BSPlayer on the N10, but I want to be able to actually watch 1080p videos. Thanks!

I use MX Player Pro because it's HW+ mode handles 1080p hi10 MKV videos; However, I typically copy files over before playing. I suppose as long as the connection is good enough you could use CIFS manager (Needs root, maybe additional drivers) to map the network share so that the tablet only sees it as another local folder if it's not able to play them through a network browser like ES file explorer.

I've been looking for the best way to setup the tf700t to play movies from my pc. Most seem to be a bit laggy or the sound goes out of sync. Is it due to the tf700t not having dual band capability? Is that something an update later on could fix, or is it hardware? Any advice you all have would be great. The fastest connection I get to my router is 65mbps, is that enough for HD videos?

Here is a vid of me streaming HD from my local network to my tablet. No lags or desyncs. I use cleanrom 2.7.2 and clemsyns 1.3.1.5 kernel. The BS Player is the only player that works for that :/

i have no issues streaming mkv from BS player. Sound syncs perfectly. I also have 65mbps

I`ve found not only player is important.
Using normal ROM (rooted but not unlocked) I use Built-In player to play HD content. Also good choice will me MX Player.
Found some sync and delay issues but I know reason now...
It was not player issue, guilty was application with SMB/CIFS support.
Using now Solid Explorer Beta2 (v1.4.0 - last cracked version with license activation .apk file ---> available to download through BlackMarket apk
SMB or CIFS works great, all sync problems gone now, plays 1080p with high bitrate with no prob

Interesting, my TF700 is as stock as it comes (stock rom, no root), and I'm not able to play any 1080p mkv's over wifi (yes, connected @ 65mbps).
The combo Wifi + ES File Exporer + BS Player (HW decode modus) works for files up to 720p, but not for 1080p (not even 6gig files).
I'll give Solid Explorer a try (there's a 14-day trial version in the Play store) and see if that solves anything..
Ofcourse it plays the same files just fine from internal memory or (micro)SD card, it has the power.
If there are any more tips, I'd like to hear them for streaming 1080p mkv's Not quite ready to root although CIFS maanger would make life easier, won't it?

You can watch with bsplayer, it handles mkv files, i watched battleship in 1080p so it does work

Over wifi?
I stream my re-encoded blurays in 1080p x264 mkv format with DTS, subtitle tracks and whatnot all over my network to laptops, mediaplayers, wired and wireless..
So I think it's not my network or my wireless router and/or my two other access points (objective was maximum wifi-speeds coverage in entire house).
I tried l3v's suggestion to access my files on the NAS with Solid Explorer instead of ES File Explorer and stream again using BS Player, but unfortunately no difference in jerkyness and framedrops when using ES File Explorer..
Maybe I should be looking at BS player settings (or perhaps WIFI settings)? Anyone care to share or are you just using default settings?
So I'm not sure what makes others stream without issues and I can't (but all other devices in the house can)... Kind of annoys me, makes me jealous :silly:

I use ES for all my everyday share access and Cleanrom ( even on ICS with Zeus worked nice! )

Based in my experience with devices way slower than TF700 (so my experience might not translate), I've found it much easier to share my videos through a web site set up with IIS (Internet Information Server) which is free in many versions of Windows. MX Player handles http with ease (even for fast seeking), no username/password required (although supported), and http is a much better streaming protocol than SMB (Windows share), so if your network is slow or has many collisions it will perform a little better. If your Windows version doesn't include IIS, you can download XAMP (free) or better yet Cherokee (google cherokee web server), which is fast and lightweight.

SMB is highly un-optimized on android, It;s all going to depend on your bitrate(not your resolution). DLNA is a far more efficient mechanism for streaming on android.
If you are trying to stream full bitrate Blu-ray content I would avoid SMB.

I've come from a lot of Samsung devices, and I decided to jump that boat as soon as I was no longer able to install CM on the Note III.
I have a Samba/FTP server, and I like to stream videos from Samba to my phone, like all the time, like 90% of the videos are h.264 mkv. I used DicePlayer on my Note III to stream, and it was pretty awesome. When I tried this on my OPO, it wouldn't work, presumably because the OPO doesn't have the proper codecs, so I went to the settings in Diceplayer and changed the setting for mkv to play under "software player" instead of default; This worked, but I only got like 2 FPS, literally. So I rolled my eyes and went and got VLC. VLC can't open network folders, so I had to use some other obnoxious app to open the files. This works, but its so crappy compared to Diceplayer, it skips/stops every minute or so.
I am wondering if anyone knows any way that I can get it all working with Diceplayer, or if there is a better app that I can use that works just as well. I don't know much about this kind of stuff, but it seems to me that the OPO doesn't have the proper codecs, and Diceplayer doesn't work well enough with the phone that it can make up for lack of said codecs.

Try using MX player. It runs everything and can use hardware and software codecs. It can also stream from a network though I have never used that feature.

I think I tried that one on my Note, it works, but its buggy, and to stream you have to open it via url which is annoying. But I will try it.

Hi, how it works?
I have problem with playing 720p .mkv movies (for example The.Flash.2014.S01E06.720p.HDTV.X265.mkv ).
It plays video slower than audio ( there is one second of audio freeze every five seconds). I have tried to install additional codecs, but it didn't help. It plays on SW decoder, HW/HW+ shows only error and switch to SW.
Also try to install VLC player, but it didn't work too.
480p mkv files are played ok, even via WiFi.
OPO and MX player are actual, phone isn't rooted.
