I am having a hard time trying to play SD files in Xvid codec. First, it doesn't show up in any of the player's list. And if I try to play the file through Astro or included file manager, I get an error message saying "This video cannot be played! Please contact to the Phone maker!" Anyone have issues like this?
All I can see/play is MP4/M4V files encoded for IPAD. I updated to latest FOTA.
use rockplayer
So I downloaded Rock/Mobo/Vital Players and all played fine using software decode(ffmpeg). So I assume hardware decoding of xvid is not supported by tegra 2?
it has no integrated support for AVI/MKV/RMVB,check the manual for details.
if you want to play these video files, use 3rd party video players instead,e.g. moboplayer,rockplayer...

haven't tried Mobo or RockPlayer yet...gonna try them tonight.

Did you update it? The one in the market normally will want to update to a version that works with our processor type. If yours did not I think you can download and install from the website. I have checked the hardware button and mine sticks when it did not used to with the old version.

Thanks I will try that.
I quite like mVideoPlayer. Works nicely for me.
Any recommendations on a player with good subtitle support? For both external subtitles (e.g., .ass, .srt, .ssa, etc) and embedded subtitles (e.g., mkv).
I have no idea which one has a good subtitles support, but i found Real player beta.
It is fast and capable of reproducing my mp4 videos when no other could.
I can't play mkv movie on my vegan-Tab. I tried with Rockvideo,mVideoplayer...
They can not play.
Please help me .
Thanks

I can't either. Don't think it is supported yet. I just convert them to MP4 with Handbrake.

I have rockplayer but I just installed mVideoplayer and whenever you first open it, the changelog shows all of the subtitle formats being supported in the new release.
Well I did that and it will play my mkv file in software decoding but stops on hardware decoding. Any ideas.

If it plays does it play ok? If it does then why does it matter if it is hardware or software mode? MKV is hard to play as it is which is why I convert them. The players will get better, just need to give them some time.
ahhh more confusion...
so if i put a dvd into my computer and convert it to mp4 is this the best to play on a stock gtablet? will quality be fair -good -great?
heck the reason i purchased this thing was so i could watch movie and browse the net while on vacation! and it has become a crazy pain...thought it would be smoother than it is...tons of web pages wont open cuzz the are flash?? supported so i get crazy gobbledy gook on he page! maybe i should have jut bought a net book?
The Flash problem is easily solved. Go to the FAQ thread and follow the instructions to install the correct Flash plugin. It works fine.
As for video the best codec for quality seems to be .mp4 in my opinion. .avi files work well too.

ArcMedia
VLC of andoid. ARCMEDIA. runs flawlessly on any android version. here's the apk
Argh this is frustrating. I had a $100~ chinese tablet and it runs any video smoothly while this thing refuse to run a lot of videos due to codecs...
i have some videos that are in the mkv format. i tried using rock player, but the video looks laggy and there's a discrepancy between the video and audio. it seems that the audio is ahead of the video. or is there a way to increase the frame rate for this format. i've tried almost every player in the market that came up under mkv and nothing that works right. my avi files work great though
I've tried all different players that play mkv and they are all laggy and the video is pixulated. I think the gtab is just not capable of playing them. But don't be sad the glorious opacity wont play them either results are the same.
Matt
i've been using rebox.NET found here http://www.videohelp.com/tools/rebox.NET, it basically re-muxes and converts audio to mp4 format from mkv, i've only tried 720p video so far, plays fine in rock player
I was reading the other day that an andriod version of VLC is being worked on. Hopefully that will do us right.

is this something you do on the tablet or you need to do it on a comp first?
why can't someone take the video player that comes with the archos101 and port into the gtablet? archos101 plays .mkv and just about everything else and I think the .apk is easily obtainable through archos101. I am not sure if the video player is what makes .mkv's work or if there is some system codecs involved. I used to have the archos101 and it did play .mkv's nicely.
yo do the conversion on the pc first, doesn't take but a couple minutes
The Archos player is probably optimized to the hardware inside the Archos which is different from ours.

I think a couple people have looked at doing that without success. I know I love the player on my little Archos5. It plays very nice, and also has the built-in upnp capability.
MKV (Matroska) support is compiled into stagefright/opencore on the devices that support it (Along with AC3, DTS, etc). It isn't just build into the player app.
Remember that matroska is just a container. being able to parse video streams out of an MKV won't magically give the Tegra2 enough beef to render 5.1aac+h.264 High-profile 1080p, in fact with the Tegra2 userspace libs in their current state you'll be lucky to get 1080p Main profile and only sure of playing Baseline profile.
Look at the video you want to play if its already High profile 1080p it will _never_ play on a Tegra2 device.
Remux (not re-encode) the MKV into an MP4 container, it it still doesn't play nothing short of updates from nvidia will change that.
ArcMedia
I've been using arcMedia and it runs flawlessly. Here's the apk. runs directly from Astro file manager. Long press on the video file, open file using archmedia. check the default box and every video file opened by arcMedia directly.
Is it possible to play .avi videos on Transformer? I have tried to play videos on MicroSD but have been unsuccessful.
Try using rockplayer?

Moboplayer, free from the Market, does a nice job.
Rockplayer seems to work, thanks!
AVI, the container, is fine and Android should have no trouble with. But, there's also the codecs that the video data is encoded in, as well as the codecs for the audio data.
Those may or may not be supported, especially if they're older files using some ancient and crappy codec.
Edit: Bah, OP responded as I was writing this
I know this is an old thread but hopefully someone can still be patient and help me out.
I just recently got the TF101. I think it's the plan TF101, not the "G" version. I got it through a Groupon deal so it didn't have a lot of technical details.
I'm brand new to Android and I want to watch AVI files on the Transformer using a microSD card. I've downloaded a bunch of the usual suspects (MoboPlayer, BSPlayer, Rockpayer, VPlayer) and so far I like MX Player and Dice Player the best.
Here's the problem:
I've formatted the microSD on my iMac as FAT32 and added tv show folders. **Only SOME of the avi files play without any "read" errors** I know avi's can have all sorts of codecs but for my collection of Friends tv show I personally ripped all the episodes from a dvd set using Handbrake and used the same setting for all the videos. So why are some working flawlessly and other videos can't play at all?
Is there something that I'm missing that I need to do to make all my avi's compatible? Do I need to download something else aside from the ARM codecs req by each app? Is it because I'm using a non-brand microSD?
All help is appreciated... Thanks!
For some reason only about half of my videos on my sd card are playing properly. They work fine on my computer but once transferred to my phone either crash instantly or I get a prompt that says "This video cannot be played". I have multiple file types, mainly .mp4 and .avi Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Download a player from the market that plays the codecs you listed. The reason some files are not playing is the lack of codec support

Correct, the default video player has limited codec support. My favourite video player is MoboPlayer (available in the Market). Most of the videos I watch are .avi format and MoboPlayer works great!
I already tried that. I dl'ed moboplayer and qqplayer. Neither worked. It did the same as the default and just crashed as soon as I tried to open it. (The video not the player)
Hi everyone. Recently I bought a new GT P5113. In all the tablet reviews they say that it can play easily almost all AVI, MKV, MP4 etc video files, but when I try to play them with the stock video player I get a message that video is not supported. I dont think that this is normal.
My tab is running the latest firmware update from Samsung ULGB2 4.0.4 or sth like that. Any ideas, except installing 3rd party players? Somebody else with the same problem?
Thanks!
what files exactly wont play and are they stored locally?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bsplayer.bspandroid.free&hl=en
try bsplayer, it should hardware playback files with a HW onscreen to let you know.
It plays all my upnp hosted video files just fine, i had some issues with streamed files with the stock player. assuming my p3110 uses the same decoding process.
Thanks for the info. It wont play divx and xvid avi files, also it doesnt want to play mkv and mp4, which is completely strange. The files are stored on the externsl microsd. I wonder if i need to make a hard reset...
Edit: BSplayer plays videos only in SW mode

yeah something is not right mp4 should be the tester as they always play no matter what. try it and let us know
I fixed it with a simple restart. Firmware bug obviously Now we are OK
why not give Dice Player a try?
I used to have MX Player but switched to Dice Player.
