i notice that when i use my phone on 4g when charging the temp exceeds 40C. is this normal? i kno this is dual core but what is the max safe temp for this phone?
I made a post about this a couple days ago and no one answered but mines usually at 94 F and 110 while charging . . i was wondering the same thing..

I think this is just a normal occurrence in the android world. Because in both my N1 and G1 i had this same problem they would just become super hot when using extensively(Which kills the battery faster fyi) or when charging, but for charging I have heard of people using Set CPU to lower settings so that it doesn't get as hot. As far as i have ever heard though it isn't great for the phone/battery, but have never heard of actual damage coming from it.
Yes, it happens to my G1 and also my G2x. Usually when I'm charging the phone and using it at the same time, the temp would go up to 43.5C.
Extensive overheating of any semiconductor is bad and will shorten the lifespan i believe, but i think these temps should be 'normal' for these processors. Maybe there's code to tell the phone to automatically shut down after the cpu surpasses a certain temp? Like how modern desktops would.
Well hopefully when custom roms and kernels come out this will improve. My mytouch 4g used to get to 40C sometimes, but after loading up cm7, it never exceeds 35C even when OC'd to 1.2ghz

I have heard a lot of people saying they can't tell the difference between the underclocked default and running at 172 to 528 so I thought it best to discuss the benefits, disbenefits and thus if it's worth doing, if it's worth slowing it down further and if it's worth going even faster.
So far I have found the most noticable area of improvement to be in file transfer performance. To transfer a 134mb file from SD card to notebook I got 14 seconds vs 19 seconds at stock speed (somebody confirm?).
I have not noticed any change in battery life.
Was it underclocked from new due to cooling issues or battery or what?
I think it was also a bit quicker updating 13,000 camera locations in MySpeed.
A lot of the variables are difficult to test so any suggestions would be welcome.

You didn't verify what speed you are running it at. I assume you set it at a constant 528? I overclock it every once in awhile. I think I may set it to 528 and let it sit all day.
I don't know about you guys, but when I leave it locked at 528 for a long period of time. My phone speed gets ****ed. It feels like its running at 172. 528 is great for when you're using your phone heavily, but once you put your phone to sleep, it seems that it drops from 528 regardless of what you have it set at. Try it out... you'll see. Especially when the phone starts getting hot. Left it on all day and the touch screen was way too hot to be normal. Not good.
Why you would **** with the speed/heat consumption of a device that already gets hot charging the battery is beyond me. It's asking for failure.

Hmm I've had my phone @ 528MHz for like a month now. Even leaving it on for weeks at that speed I don't see any problems. One thing you might try when it starts going slow like that is make sure it's still running at 528(OS resets it sometimes) and check what apps are running.
At any rate, for me overclocking works perfectly and I haven't had any issues at all with it. For battery life it'll probably depend on your usage. Clocking at 528MHz will lower battery life if you leave your phone asleep most of the time(even if you set a lower minimum since there's more of a jump the cpu has to make when scaling back to max speed), but if you use your phone a lot and it's rarely asleep then you'll probably actually get better battery life with it set to 528 max and min, since the cpu no longer has to use the energy required to change speed.
EDIT: @afflaq: It's not the cpu that gets hot from charging, it's the battery. You're not going to overheat the cpu just by clocking it to its rated speed.
Ditto @ marcusmaximus, I got the same temperature readings during 528 and 384 mHz. Been running it on 528 for a while as well.

Which overclocking application are you using, and which Android version are you running?
Overclocking
It works fine overclocked all the time. I don't even notice any difference in battery life either. My phone is mostly in sleep mode btw. On all day, I only see it drop to 66% with light usage. Overclocked surfing the web, I surfed for an hour continuous and the battery went from 100% to around 80%.
Using Open overclocker and any rooted build should work as long as you have it setup right. Just set it to 528 in both fields and forget it. The app automatically asks permission from the root app every time you reboot.
I am currently using TheDudes build and it works perfect. I have never had it reset the speed either as others suggest. Try one of his builds and get the Open Overclocker app from the market. That is the best build anyway.
Currently running .93 ... waiting for .95 which will be even faster.

I have the Inspire4g/Desire HD (obviously)... Ive noticed my phone constantly runs above 36 degrees most of the time (Celsius?), around 35-40...
Sometimes it gets as hot as 40-42 degrees....
I have the Rcmix3d ROM and overclocked at (400ghz+) 1.7ghz, but since all these heating, Ive changed it to only about 300ghz-1.5ghz
(btw Im set on 'conservative' for SetCpu , if that makes a difference). Now the temps are like between 32-38, and sometimes hits near 40..
So is this bad at all? WHats the max temperature for the inspire or smartphones in general? Whats yours' temprature?
Also, I live in hawaii and it's usually hot here, especially now in summer (70-80 degrees). So that might be one factor I guess?
From what I read the Inspire is pretty good at handling heat, I know personally my phone gets that hot sometimes though, i used to get somewhat scared when it got to 108(42 celcius) but that would only happen when my phone was plugged in and I was doing some heavy usage...
I would just unplug the phone and everything would be okay, I also went as far as taking of both covers and the battery and just let the phone cool down...
And the outside temperature can be a small factor, not enough to effect the phone though because its pretty insulated with the metal.
I find that frequently my Q runs hot. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to when it happens, but often it's hot enough that it's a bit uncomfortable in my pocket. Anyone else?

Before I turned off LTE the phone got extremely hot, since then it's only occasionally reached uncomfortable levels (~104F battery temp according to my widget) and each of those times was when I was in a marginal signal area without WiFi data. Bluetooth with WiFi looking for a signal also seems to get it a little hot (maybe 102F), but nothing like the Evo Shift which would hit 108F under the same configuration!
I have mine temps set to C but the other day it got up to like 64 degrees. Not sure what that is in degrees F but I know its dangerously high.
What temp are you monitoring? To me 64C could only be cpu core, which would indeed be high but not dangerous to the chip (my desktop core routinely hits 90C as does my GPU when stressed, I run a minimal fan speed passively cooled rig for noise reasons). Most components can hit 110C internal temp without damage. However batteries don't like getting above 40C much at all, nor does human flesh.

Supposedly that's battery temp. At least according to SetCPU. I figure its off somewhat cuz it reports my processor upwards of 300 C and I know that's not right. But I have a case on my phone and when its reading high battery temps the back of my phone is hot (not just warm)
I Keep wifi off, and when in poor service areas my phone gets hot. If I put it in forceroam, then she is fine.
My wifi is rarely on. Occasionally my temps get a little warm but not too bad. Any time I use wifi tether it climbs though.
Edit: After re-reading arggghhh's kernel thread i realized the kernel i was using has the gpu overclock attempt. Flashed back to version .04 and its still getting a little warm but nothing ridiculous. Haven't used wifi tether yet so i cant report on those temps.
Hi all i want to ask if overclocking is a good think because i have a galaxy w and some month ago i clock my processor from 1.4 to 1.8 gHz (single core).. now the battery life is very reduced, but i don't know if it is caused by the clock or if is the time that have my phone.. i used the clock speed for one week max just for play a hard game with good graphics :eek. :good:
If you've already returned to stock clockspeed it's probably not the overclocking that's causing it. But just to be sure, go and check that the clock is at standard. It has happened for me that the phone has raised the clock by it self for some reason. If thats not the case just try going to the battery stats to see if any app is using a lot of battery. If not I dont know what could be wrong. Maybe it's just time for a new battery (or phone)
Overclocking is not a "good" or "bad" thing. It will use more battery while you're doing it and you can damage the hardware - it's a risk you choose to take.
It's possible something was damaged, but it wouldn't be my first guess.
I'd use something like BetterBatteryStats to find out why your battery is draining and go from there.
Honestly there's really no point your phone is engineered to a certain clock everything in your phone is engineered to run with that clock when you overclock now your straining not just the processor but your battery as well and everything(electronic component wise) is now going to run a lot hotter then it was engineered to run and you have tiny little low voltage surface mount transistors and diodes that don't like heat. So they stop the clock at where they do so they can achieve the best speed they can without harming components and without killing your battery. The more you run that phone like that the less and less your battery is going to last. Its like your poisoning it slowly. Just to archive less then microseconds of snappyness. Its not really worth it there's no point in breaking (not all devices will break but you don't know if you have one with a weak component in it somewhere or not. It might not break until you stress it out) something that intelligent entity's after pulling in matter and from this cosmos and putting it together to engineer such an amazing device. Why break it. Its very possible to do so. Some phones will run a year like that without starting to lag on you from burning out contacts inside components and creating tiny little spark gaps that takes signal and current longer to get where it needs to go so now you start to lag....that can start to happen the next day or an hour after you do it. Or even a year from now. Do you really need to be faster where you barely notice it that badly?

I am calibrating my battery atm and as you may know you have to discharge your device fully to calibrate the battery properly. To speed up the process I decided to install a stresstest app to my phone and guess what: the phone gets insanely hot, I can't even hold it in my hand longer then 5-10 seconds. Kernel tuner displays me temperatures between 78 and 82°C.
But this overheating problem not only happens with the stresstest. When I start watching videos on youtube or start using my phone for maps it gets hot too (about 60-70°C). It starts to bug me.
What do you guys think I should do to fix this? I already thought about applying some thermal compound between the CPU and the metal shield around it. But I'm not quite sure if it's a good idea. I already have a new phone but I still need two phones because I have to travel between Germany and Switzerland all the time. And this issue starts to make my Sensation unusable.

I would suggest an anker battery. It has a greater capacity and it keeps the battery very cool.

Already using it and I'm talking about the CPU temperatures and not the battery's temperature.
And sure I did try different kernels. Even at stock kernel setting this thing gets hot as f***!

So I just decided to disassemble my Sensation and put some thermal compound on the processor chip. Now I'm not getting over 70°C at full load, 1,56GHz. Pretty good outcome. And under normal use it doesn't heat up over 45°C.
I really have to recommend you this method!
