Need help with an issue using ROM Manager Premium. Cannot seem to find any info on solving my problem and no one has responded to my other post.
Tonight, when I tried to run another downloaded ROM in ROM Manager, the system simply rebooted and never installed another ROM. What am I missing or doing wrong. I have followed the few instructions I have found, but no luck addressing this issue. Please help!
From another post...
Sorry if I placed this in the wrong forum. Still getting used to this site.
z4Rooted Droid X user.
System version 2.3.340 - Android version 2.2.1
Having an issue with ROM Manager Premium 3.0.0.5 and Flash ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.7...
After flashing clockworkmod recovery, I hit Reboot Into Recovery. The phone simply does a reboot and nothing more. I have tried several times.
Also using Launcher Pro Plus and Titanium Backup Premium.
Any help?
Not sure, but seems like either the phone isnt going into recovery, so try to install the rom without going into recovery.
If you want to flash a new rom that you downloaded from rom manager, you can do it without going into recovery. You just have to go into rom manager, choose "install rom from SD card, navigate to the file you downloaded and click it.
once you click the file you want to flash, it will ask you if you want to backup your rom and if you want to wipe data/cache. choose which ones you want to do, and press continue.
I recommend you create a backup and wipe data/cache.

Thanks a lot! I will give that a shot.
Is it possible I am missing some files or something like that needed to perform that recovery? Is a GummyJAR a good ROM?

Thanks, again. Yes, you are right. This site is a bit difficult to get use to. Feel like a forum n00b, and I certainly am not.
Also, not sure if you have done this yet, but you have to flash a recovery first in rom manager, before you can do pretty much anything.
the first option is flash clockworkmod recovery, choose that, then it may pop up something about cdma. choose that and it will flash a recovery, then you can flash the new rom.

Yes. I did indeed try that. It seems to flash without issue, but the problem still exists.
Not sure whats going on then. I think rom manager is messing up. you are gonna have to get it to go into recovery first before it will do anything.
Not sure how you get into recovery with the X, but with the incredible, you power down the phone, then hold the volume down button while pushing the power button.
If it still doesnt go into recovery, try and delete rom manager, then re install it, and flash a new recovery.
Also, could be a bad download, and you might have to redownload the rom.
If that doesnt help, better go to the X forums and look around.

Will do. One thing that has me concerned is, I am not even convinced ROM Manager has performed a successful backup of my current ROM, yet. Even though it seems to backup just fine. When browsing my SD card, I do not see the backup file ANYWHERE.
I do know how to get into the X stock recovery, but the menu items are very limited and I cannot create a nandroid backup.
I am going to try an uninstall/reinstall like you recommended and then take a look in the Droid X forums. Thanks again!!!
Sorry I couldnt help. My backups are in sd card/clockworkmod/backups.
sometimes rom manager acts funny.

No problem, man. You have given some great advice. I did a full uninstall, restart and re-install. No luck. Same thing.
Taking your advice and posting this in the Droid X forums.
It's funny, I have found a lot of posts about ROM Manager issues, but not many posts on the actual fixes.
Brand new Thunderbolt, I did have it rooted but just factory reset it, I no longer have root. I hold down the power button and BOTH volume arrows and get into the screen for recovery, when I go to it it gives me a black screen with a pic of a phone in the middle with a red triangle and a red exclamation mark over top the phone.
I want to root and get a new kernel but think it would not be smart to proceed until I fix this problem. Jeesh, had it less than 12 hours and broke it already haha.
So, how do I get it to let me in there so I can make a nandroid backup?
I'm pretty certain you need to be rooted to access recovery.
Well, last night when I WAS rooted I tried it and it didn't work either. Well, I will try that tonight around 5PM EST and let you know if rooting allows me in. Honestly, I factory reset the phone after I rooted it because I thought the way I rooted it messed it up. Now I am thinking that is not true.
You have to be rooted to get into recovery. Also, and I am not 100% sure about this, if you did a factory re-set and didnt re-root and then reinstall CWR then there wont be a recovery for you to access.
You're looking at the stock recovery. You need to reroot and flash CWM to be able to install custom zips.

A factory reset shouldn't cause you to lose root. That just wipes data/cache. I would return to stock, root again and go from there. There's a thread in the development section on how to return to stock.
Did you flash CWM after rooting??? You can't do **** without that.
Ok, here is what I did, i took a factory thunderbolt and followed all the directions on this link.
http://www.thunderboltforums.com/fo.../1233-rs-guide-how-root-your-thunderbolt.html
Then, I downloaded rom manager and busybox and was about to try and install a kernal. I wanted to make a nandroid back up and thats when I noticed this problem. I also think I lost my 3g access then too. So, I went to factory reset and then tested the root checker app and it said I had NO ROOT.
I am rather noobish so please make the directions on how to fix this simple HAHA. I am also wondering if the link above has good root instructions and how would I install a kernel on the thunderbolt? Even a link to a thunderbolt kernel thread would be sweet!! THanks!!
I will wait for someone to let me know if that link is any good before I root with it again.

I think the directions in the link above might have missed something that a noob like me would not have picked up on. Something you guys prolly would have known right away.

CMW is ClockworkMod Recovery. It's the recovery you flash in ROM Manager.
Follow this thread for rooting. There's a few other methods in the development section that have scripts so you don't have to manually push through ABD. Doing it yourself is more fail safe though and also a good learning experience.

Downloading Rom Manager is NOT installing custom recovery but a way to do so.
Once RM is installed open it up & choose Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. That will install the latest recovery from which you can run backups and such.

So... Just my 2 cents. You said you downloaded clockworks and busy box, but I never saw you reference super user. That should have been download number 1 after root. Without that, you're not doing anything.

In ROM Manager if you select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery", Rom Manager will do just that.
It will flash your recovery.

Ok I guess I am not fully understanding this. What does it really mean to "flash" your "recovery"?
Does this mean to make a copy of your current phone, like a nandroid backup? Or does it mean to access a copy you have already made and revert your system to that prior copy? Or am I wrong on both?

The answer to your first question of the first link being any good...that would be a big NO. Your phone never rooted from the start due to faulty directions posted. As far as flashing a recovery from clockworkmod that basically means when you need to get to the recovery screen this is the program that will bring you there with the understanding that you flash the recovery. NOW to do that there is an option at the top of the screen which says
" Flash ClockworkMod Recovery "
Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.2.5
Once you flash it will show this:
Flash CLockworkMod Recovery
Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.3.5
Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.2.5
TO FLASH YOU SIMPLY SELECT THIS BOX AND IT WILL BRING UP A SCREEN TO CONFIRM PHONE MODEL AND THEN WILL ASK FOR SUPERUSER PERMISSION WHICH YOU MUST GRANT ACCESS TO AT ALL TIMES.

I already have it and flashed from cwm. No issues to report so far. (but i haven't flashed anything other than the recovery and rebooted into it via Rom manager)
So far, backup from rom manager doesn't work, but if you do it manually....it still works fine. Partitioning works from within rom manager. Testing more.

I finally bit the bullet and did it last night. You can't do it like Super One Click, you basically have to install ClockWorkMod
Go here and skip down to the picture of the screen with 3 large buttons.
Follow the instructions to:
1) Install the Nvidia NvFlash APX Driver
2) Install Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
3) Download a ROM (I just chose the stock Gingerbread with root access -- That is the only way to get Root Access)
4) Put the downloaded ROM on the root directory of your SD card
5) Backup all your stuff (I used MyBackup Pro)
6) Follow the instructions to boot into recovery mode.
7) There are instructions for installing each mod but it involves clearing data/cache, installing the mod.
It isn't as hard as it sounds but it can be intimidating. This is just a summary from the top of my head. There may be a few more steps.
Good luck.
Here is the link for the stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 mod.

No. As long as you flash recovery properly then you can flash any rom compatible with the phone. As long as the rom is rooted you'll have root.

Do you mean when you flash a new rom? If so then no, as long as you used the nvflash method to put clockworkmod recovery on your G2X then you can always boot back into recovery to fix your issues. Just make sure you ONLY flash roms made for the G2X. Don't flash anything made for the O2X.
G2X CM7
General rule for flashing roms:
- If you're switching from one rom to a different one, you should do a full wipe/factory reset before flashing. For instance, flashing from stock to CM7, or flashing from CM7 to MIUI, etc.
- If you're updating to a newer version of the same rom, then just wipe cache and dalvik cache and then flash the update.

I don't have my G2X yet so I haven't tried it. The file can be found in Chaindd's SuperUser thread. He is the author of the SuperUser permissions program. It just installs superuser.apk and su with proper permissions to the phone. Works on most devices with CWM installed.

Hello All,
I need your help regarding upgrade my captivate which is running on 2.1. I had hard bricked it once before when I was trying to update it via odin. Just got fixed it back from mobiletechvideos.com. Now I want to upgrade it to gingerbread Can anyone tell me any stable rom which I can upgrade safely and have 0% chance to hard bricked it again. Or any rom which I can flash via any other tool not via odin as I thought last bricked was caused due to odin. Pls help me.
I like the MIUI rom but I saw that it use ODIN so I am a bit afread to try it
Thanks
My understanding of the process.
I'm fairly sure you need to use superoneclick to root, that's step one. Next go to market and dowload ROM manager and install it, that's step two.Step three, flash clockworkmod recovery with ROM manager. Choose captivateMTD and let it flash. Step four, now go to the download ROM and choose an MTD ROM. I reccomend cyanogenmod as its aosp, overclocked and generally awesome. They have a stable build that's a great dd. Step five is to flash it. When the download completes it will promt you to wipe data and cache, clear everything and hit go. Step six would be to dl and flash gapps with ROM manager. Wipe cache and install. After all this you should be on cm7 stable. Pm me if you need help. I have the drivers and all files you could possibly need in my dropbox account.
Good luck and enjoy cyanogenmod.

You do not need to root your phone to install a custom rom.
If you currently are on 2.1, boot into recovery and flash this zip file.
From here you can go about installing a gingerbread kernel and rom.
If you are unsure of the process, please do lots more research before you go flashing anything. If you brick again it's not my fault.

Step One: Root Done
Step Two: ROM manager installation Done
Step Three: flash clockworkmod recovery with ROM manager (When I clicked on it asked me that confirm phone model and when I clicked on samsung captivate MDT it said that clockworkmod not officially supported the captivate MDT and have you installed clockworkmod based recovery manually if I clicked on yes it proceed to the next screen and if I clicked no it said that without it rom manager will not work. If i clicked on yes it proceed to the next screen and asked me the clockworkmod version 2.x or 3.x. I select one of them and click on the install rom from SD card and then browse to my downloaded rom when I clicked on rom and it will ask me to backup exsisiting rom, wipe data and cache and wipe dalvik cache. I had selected last 2 options and clicked ok then it asked me to press ok to reboot into clockworkMod Recovery and continue the installation when I clicked ok and rebooted where it showing me 4 options: rebbot system now, reinstall packages, delete all user data and delete cache data. After that I don't know what to do BTW I downloaded MIUI rom as I wana try it )
Any Help ?
Its sounds like you are in the stock recovery still. When you get to the screen with four options click reinstall packages and it should take you to clockwork recovery. The you will have many more options. You will want to go to install zip from SD card then choose zip from SD card and then navigate to your rom of choice and click it. Then it will go through the install process and when it is done hit reboot now and you should be running your custom rom.

Phone is in the same state and doing this thing again and again. I remove the battery and power on again and its doing same thing any help ?
Get into cwm again via buttons and flash cm7 one more time. Should fix the error you're seeing.

Yeah I know that this for the XDA all about but every time I got help is via starting a topic. Being a beginner I want to have a guide where all problems should listed click if the phone is not going cwm how can you fix it so it would be guide. I got help everytime from XDA when I searched but very distributed. And if you search on google you will got alot info in which you are not sure about which is correct for you. Anyways Thanks alot guys.
